Errors Scripting Out Multi-server Jobs

Apr 21, 2008

While attempting to script out some multi-server jobs I am receiving this error:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
------------------------------
Script failed for Job 'my job name'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
For help, click: <link removed to keep message width to a normal size :)>
------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Unable to cast object of type 'System.DBNull' to type 'System.String'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
------------------------------
BUTTONS:
OK
------------------------------

This happens on any multi-server job. The reason behind needing to script this is the current database server that acts as our master server for SQL Server jobs is being replaced. I figured it would be easy enough to script out the job on the old server and run it (with minimal modifications) on the new server. Now, if I create any of these jobs manually on the new server and try to script it, it works just fine. Any ideas what might be the issue here?

I've tried doing it via SSMS from multiple servers and the issue persists.

SQL Server 2012 :: How To Update Master Count Column From Multi Thread Application

Sep 28, 2015

We have an application that runs Jobs, each of which affect ## number of child objects (usually around 1M). When a thread gets to 5000 updated child objects it bulk inserts into a table called ActionLog with the child Id and JobId.

When the job is complete a sproc SUMs the children from the ActionLog table:
select sum(id) from ACTIONLOG where JOBID = @JobId;

It then updates the Jobs table AffectedObjectCount column with the sum(*) from above.

Instead of writing to the ActionLog table and calculating the SUM at the end I would like to do this 'real time'. After the bulk insert I would like to update the AffectedObjectCount column with the number of rows that were just bulk inserted. I tried this in the past and ran into major contention issues. There are usually 20 threads running a job so there exists a lot of potential for deadlocks.

Is there a recommended way to handle updating one column on one row from multiple threads? What is the best practice for a counter like this?

SQL 2000 Maintenance Plan And Multi-step Jobs

Mar 9, 2006

Hi,

I'm working with SQL 2000 and am just learning about Maintenance Plans (MP). They seem convenient, but after some time, I'm wondering if they're the best approach long-term. Here are my experiences.

Using the MP Wizard, I created a plan with tasks from all the dialogs:

- Optimize database
- Check integrity
- Backup database
- Backup transaction log
- Write a report

I was puzzled to find 4 jobs were created, each with just 1 step, and staggered starting times. I expected to find 1 job with 4 steps. So, brimming with confidence, I did just that. I combined all 4 into 1 job, deleted the 3 other MP created jobs, and checked for any job-specific details in the code. However now when I open the MP, I get this pop-up:

"One or more of the jobs created for this plan has had additional steps added to it. It is not recommended that jobs created by the maintenance plan be modified in any way."

Okay, fair warning. Yet it appears the job and all steps run successfully, both on demand, and on a schedule. So now I'm wondering if jobs always need a MP. If I don't mind working with xp_sqlmaint syntax, it appears the only thing I'm giving up is the MP history. But I expect job history and '-WriteHistory' will minimize that loss.

I searched BOL, this Forum, and Google, and found a couple articles. One author preferred the ease of the Wizard, another preferred the control and added features of T-SQL, but both created a MP in their examples. So I'm hoping some experienced DBAs can advise.

If I create a job with multiple steps, and no MP, are there important things I give up or problems I create?
Is this approach a bad idea in SQL 2005?

At this stage, I don't need replication or other advanced features. Just simple database maintenance.

Thank you,
- Martin

Multi-part Identifier Could Not Be Bound With The Master Database

May 12, 2008

Using
- SQL Server 2005
- Management Studio Express.

Here's the SQL statement

Code Snippet

SELECT TOP 1000

[test].[CatalogStudioId],

[test].[CollectionId],

[test].[unique],

[test].[att1]

FROM CatalogStudioEntity.dbo.[test]
WHERE [test].[att1] LIKE '%1%'

Now, before you respond, allow me to say that I know using the table name to qualify the columns is redundant, and I know there are other options (such as aliasing the table). Don't respond to tell me this. However -- as far as I know -- this is a valid T-SQL statement and I should be able to get this query to run.

The interesting part is that if management studio is connected to the CatalogStudioEntity database, this query runs fine. If connected to the master database, I get the "multi-part identifier [x] could not be bound" error. The error is listed for every column.

My issue with this is that the table in the FROM clause is qualified with the database name, so whether I'm connected to that database or to "master" should not matter.

I have an application that generates select statements like the one above, and all of the machines so far that we've developed, beta tested and deployed this application on all don't have this problem. It's this one specific installation of SQL Server 2005 on this new machine where this problem arises.

Before I go back and retool the application to output whatever arbitrary syntax this specific machine seems to want, I want to try and troubleshoot and understand why it's acting like this.

Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Setup And Upgrade :: How To Remove Stuff That Script Installed Into Master Database

Jun 8, 2015

I downloaded the AdventureWorks2012 OLTP script. When I ran it it gave me some errors. I also noticed that it tried to install into the bult-in master database, it created a lot of tables and objects. Some questions :

1) How can I remove everything that the script installed into master database?
2) Do I need to create 1st an empty database and then run the script there?
3) I am running the script from a custom path (C:DownloadsMicrosoft SQL Server 2012AdventureWorks 2012 OLTP Script.zipAdventureWorks 2012 OLTP Script) not sure if this is causing some of the errors as the script, in the beggining has a path to other folders :

:setvar SqlSamplesDatabasePath   "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL11.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLDATA"
-- NOTE: Change this path if you copied the script source to another path
:setvar SqlSamplesSourceDataPath "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL11.MSSQLSERVERToolsSamplesAdventureWorks 2012 OLTP Script"

4) Final question, I also downloaded the AdventureWorks 2012 simple database (AdventureWorks2012_Data.mdf). Is this file the same database as the one created by the OLTP script?

Multi-value Parameter In Master Report Passing To Single Param Sub-report In A List.

Aug 20, 2007

Here's tricky one.

I have a fairly complex report that was given to me that was hard coded for single parameters. There is a dropdown for each market (created from a query in SSRS). The users have to run for each market each week.

Is there a way to use this report as a Sub-report inside a list of a master report and then use a mult-value parameter?

I want this multi-value parameter to build the values for the list and then run the "sub-report" for each value.

Essentially, I want to create a for each loop.

Any ideas?

Multi-database Multi-server

Mar 27, 2007

I am new to Reporting Services and hope that what I am looking to do is within capabilities :-)

I have many identical schema databases residing on a number of data servers. These support individual clients accessing them via a web interface. What I need to be able to do is run reports across all of the databases. So the layout is:

Dataserver A

Database A1

Database A2

Database A3

Dataserver B

Database B1

Database B2

Dataserver C

Database C1

Database C2

Database C3

I would like to run a report that pulls table data from A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, C1, C2, C3

Now the actual number of servers is 7 and the number of databases is close to 1000. All servers are running SQL2005.

Is this something that Reporting Services is able to handle or do I need to look at some other solution?

Thanks,

Michael

SQL 2012 :: Disaster Recovery Options For Multi-Database Multi-Instance Environment

Sep 23, 2014

Disaster Recovery Options based on the following criteria.

--Currently running SQL 2012 standard edition
--We have 18000 databases (same schema across databases)- majority of databases are less than 2gb-- across 64 instances approximately
--Recovery needs to happen within 1 hour (Not sure that this is realistic
-- We are building a new data center and building dr from the ground up.

What I have looked into is:

1. Transactional Replication: Too Much Data Not viable
2. AlwaysOn Availability Groups (Need enterprise) Again too many databases and would have to upgrade all instances
3. Log Shipping is a viable option and the only one I can come up with that would work right now. Might be a management nightmare but with this many databases probably all options with be a nightmare.

Aug 17, 2015

More often than not, I typically don't touch DTC on clusters anymore; however on a project where the vendor states that it's required. So a couple things here.

1) Do you really need DTC per instance or one for all?
2) Should DTC be in its own resource group or within the instance's group?
2a) If in it's own resource group, how do you tie an instance to an outside resource group? tmMappingSet right?

Master Information And Details: How Can I Get The Master ID?

Jun 19, 2007

I got a File with sales orders and their details.

Step 1. First I am filtering the Sales Order information and inserting it in my Sales Orders table.
Step 2.Then I am filtering the details from the sales Order and inserting them in the respective table.

My Problem is that the Sales Order File does not contain the Sales Order key (ID), this is generated by the SQL Server. How can get it in order to use it in the second step? I need it because it is a foreign key in the details table.

Any Idea?

Jobs On SQL Server 7.0

Jan 3, 2000

Hi there and happy newyear

I have a very annoying problem with my SQL Server 7.0

Here is the story:
In our compagny we have three SQL servers, SQL1, SQL2 and SQL3. The SQL1 server is our development server where we build our databases. When they are ready to go live I make an DTS package that copies the database to SQL2 and put it into a schedule.

Is it somehow possible to execute a job on SQL2 when the job on SQL1 succesfully has finished??

Cheers

SQL Server 2000 Jobs

Mar 14, 2005

Hi,

I have installed SQL server 2000 (Enterprise) on W2K advanced server using my local "Administrator" account. Using the same account for login, I have created database backup jobs on the server. After this I rename the Windows administrator account to "admin". Now I see that the jobs started failing. The error message indicates that "could not determine whether the 'server/administrator' account has access to SQL server."

Further, when I tried to troubleshoot, I discovered that the job owner name still displayed (through EM) is "server/administrator" account (this account is now renamed). I tried to change the owner name to "server/admin" but it is not getting changed. Hence, I just created a Windows user named "Administrator" and see that the Job is executing successfully.

Please note that the backup is taken on the server itself and SQL server & Agent services are running under security context of a domain account having administrator priveleges on the server.

What I am interested in knowing is what are the reasons for such behaviour? And how to rectify this problem since i really don't want the "administrator" account to be created.

Sql Server 2000 Jobs...

Jan 10, 2007

Hi. i'm new to sql server jobs as i have never used the feature manually before. here is what i want to do but i don't know if it's possible.

we have a report we use that's accessed from an asp page. currently, the page uses a stored procedure to generate the data. well, as time has progressed, we've added many items to the report. it now takes a good 15-20 seconds to pull the report. what i want to do is run a job that will compile the data for me and just dump that information into a new table. does that make sense?

can this be done with sql server jobs? thank you.
