I am attempting to find quotes (") in a column and replace with the string '--THIS-WAS-QUOTES--'. Right now my script only converts the first quote it finds in the description column, converts to the string and moves to the next row leaving the other quotes as they were. Below is my query script
DECLARE @find varchar(8000),
@replace varchar(8000),
@patfind varchar(8000)
SELECT @find = '"',

I've got a table that I have to update in preparation for our environment move (2k to 2005 SP2). The developers that designed the application created a table called schemas, which holds the contents of an XML file inside of an ntext field named Data.I need to parse through the field and do a find/replace to replace all instances of www.site.com with www7.site.com. It's all over the place in the file. The problem is, that the datalength() of each of the fields (there are 2 rows) are above 15000.normally, I'd run something like this:update schemas set data=replace (cast(Data as varchar(max)),'www.site.com','www7.site.com') where data like '%www.site.com%'Smaller columns it works great - but it won't work on these because they're too big (the update will chop anything beyond the varchar(max) value). I could do it manually, but this DB will be refreshed from production on a weekly basis and I'd like to script as many of the environment changes to the DB as much as possible. Any ideas?

I have several fileds in a sql table which holds some text and a hell of a lot of white spaces (char(32)) which is causing some problems when I show the data on the front-end
What I want to do is use sql replace function to replace the char(32). However, because there is text I can't do a simple replace as the text will become just one word !
Can anyone tell me how to loop through the field to find the char(32), where the char(32) is greater than say 5 sapces and then replace this with just one single space
E.g. a field in a table contains the following :
"my text field and loads of spaces then some more text with loads of spaces "
I want to replace the char(32) with just one space so it looks like this :
"my text filed and loads of spaces then some more text with loads of spaces"
Thanks for your help

Hi!
I recently was confronted with a problem where a piece of text that was included in many NTEXT column values in a table needed to be replaced with another piece of text. You can't issue normal REPLACE statements against NTEXT columns, so this seemed to be a bit of a challenge €” issuing a REPLACE() against a TEXT or NTEXT column in SQL Server yields error
I tried following
UPDATE CaseTypeDefs SET definition = replace(LTRIM(RTRIM(definition)), '<![CDATA[sp_YOTAssetAdditionalOffences 0, ArgParamHearingsId, ArgParamLanguage, ArgParamReferralId]]>', '<![CDATA[sp_YOTAssetAdditionalOffences 0, ArgParamHearingsId, ArgParamLanguage]]>')
But this is producing following error
Server: Msg 8116, Level 16, State 1, Line 1Argument data type ntext is invalid for argument 1 of replace function.
For Example: I want to replace string <![CDATA[sp_YOTAssetAdditionalOffences 0, ArgParamHearingsId, ArgParamLanguage]]> with <![CDATA[sp_YOTAssetAdditionalOffences 0, ArgParamHearingsId, ArgParamLanguage, ArgParamReferralId]]> in NTEXT column values in a table.
Need help, how to do it?.
Thanks In Advance

#1 This stored procedure can be used to search and replace substring in the char, nchar, varchar and nvarchar columns in all tables in the current database. You should pass the text value to search and the text value to replace. So, to replace all char, nchar, varchar and nvarchar columns which contain the substring 'John' with the substring 'Bill', you can use the following (in comparison with the SetTbColValues stored procedure, this stored procedure replace only substring, not the entire column's value):
EXEC replace_substring @search_value = 'John', @replace_value = 'Bill'

For some reasons I have to use a ntext field for both small strings like "10" and large binalry files.
I need to sort the field to some extend to present the small strings on a sorted nice way - answers to " What country are you from" etc.
To trick the sorting I use a calculated field:
ORDER BY RSort - where Rsort is:
convert(varchar(4), RD.response) as RSort
It works but put a high load on the SQL server when the number of responses increases.
I though of making a non clustered index based on the calculated field, but is not sure that it will work as intended.
What do I do. The last thing would be to change the ntext to vchar(3800) or something like that.

Hello All,
Maybe a stupid question but I'm new to the db admin work so please bear with me.
I've imported an Access db into SQL, in the Access db the field type was 'memo' to accomodate the large amount of text (on avg ruffly 4100 chars. with spaces). Now in SQL the field in the table I have set up as an ntext field, which I understood to be equivalent to a memo field in Access.
My problem is when saving data to the field the first time it saves all the data correctly with the exception of the field in question. The data in the field is '<LongText>', now when I try to update the data in the table I get a 'Data Truncated' error message and no update takes place throughout the table.
After testing this and trying different things, I've found that if I shorten this one field and try to save to the db I still get the 'Data Truncated' error message. If I shorten the data in the field AND delete the record from the SQL table then it will save just fine from there on out (which won't work for the reports).
I'm not sure what I'm missing here to get this to work the way it did in Access.

I'm trying to parse an ntext field that in my SQL View contains an invoice comment in order to be able to group on parts of the comment. I have two problems--one, the syntax to do this, and two, the best way to deal with the parts that I want.
The comment is like: "standard text ABCDE : $99.99" but can have multiple "ABCDE"s, e.g. "standard text ABCDE FGH IJKL $999.99" and I found some that had duplicates like "standard text standard text...".
I want to be able to report in SSRS 2005 by grouping the "ABCDE", "FGH", "IJKL" items.
Any ideas? Please be specific as I'm still learning.

My Stored Proc runs through a loop and concats the contents of each field into one big nvarchar. Procedure works fine on a smaller scale but now it is being implemented on a very large table and the results of the sequel overflow the nvarchar limits. I looked into using text and ntext but both cannot be declared locally. Does anyone know how I can work aroudn this limitation?
Summary:The problem is that the temporary variable I am using (nvarchar) is too small to contain the robust size that the SQL is concating into it. The final field it winds up in is a text field and will be able to handle the amount of data, its just getting the data there is the issue..... Your thoughts please....

Hi
I'm extracting a char(2) field from a table that has a value of '1' and writing it to another table but want the output field to be padded with a zero. I have tried this below:
right('00' + isnull(Field1, ' '),2
but the output field comes out as '1 ' (that's 1 followed by a space). Does anyone have any idea how I can do this or please point out what I'm doing wrong in my 'right(' fucntion above.
Thanks,

I am having an interesting error. I have a bunch of data that I am updating to a field in my sql server 7.0 database. It updates the data, however only puts the first 64,999 characters into the field. The datatype is ntext. From what I understand, ntext datatype can hold much more than 65,000 characters. Am I right in this? The data I'm putting into the field is html tags/text. I've tried several different data sets. I'm updating the data using Coldfusion/SQL commands.
Here is my SQL syntax:
UPDATE htmltest
SET html_offline = '#form.html#'
WHERE htmlid = #form.htmlid#

I have a third party application with a ntext field that I need to parse the data out of. The data looks like this:
<xmlF><FNumber type="int">2421</FNumber><AttachmentPath type="string" /><RequesterId type="int">232</RequesterId><Requester type="string">John Smith</Requester><RequestDate type="DateTime">3/24/2008 11:23:27 AM</RequestDate</xmlF>
The fieldname is Data and the tablename is ProcessData
Again, this looks like xml, but the field type is ntext. I would like to create a view displaying the parsed data in fields. How would I go about parsing the data?
Thanks.

I have been asked to investigate the feasibility of converting an Invoice Number field from 6 to 7 digits, and allowing alpha characters. This means CHAR. The Invoice Number is not used outside of the application, but changes would have to be made to the database, and VB code that runs the app. Any ideas on how to proceed?
Any responses would be greatly appreciated!

ok, so we have a field in one of our db's, a do_not_synch field. this field has a datatype of char...
the following sql statement does not update the field..
update contacts
set do_not_synch = 'Y'
where id=1
and if i open up the table in sql server management studio, and cannot type in and save the value Y...yes i can update other fields in this row...so its not a permissions issue?
is there anything special i should have to do?

I have followed many tutorials on selecting and replacing text in text fields, varchar fields and char fields, but I have yet to find a single script that will to all 3 based on field type. Let's assume for a moment that I don't know where all in my database a certain value that I need changed resides ... i.e., the data's tablename and fieldname. How would I go about doing the following ... or more importantly, is this even possible in a SQL only procedure?1) Loop over entire database and get all user tables2) Loop over all user tables and get all fields3) Loop over all fields and determine the field type4) switch between field types and change a string of text from 'a' to 'b'Please be gentle, I'm a procedure newb.
