SQL Server Express Won't Install With Default Service Name

I think I had a beta installed at some point. After a dozen attempts, I got SQL Server Express to install, but I had to change from the default service name (SQLExpress). When trying to configure the .NET samples that come with Visual Studio 2005, the ConfigSamples.exe does not recognize that I have SQL Server Express installed. I suspect this is due to my non-default service name. I have verifed that there is not a service installed (at least according the Services Admin Tool) that is named SQLExpress.
I just dropped over $600 for a personal copy of 2005 Professional, and I would just like to view the samples. Someone take pity on my poor soul and help out. I promise to help you help me and show much appreciation.

Jun 14, 2006I have had visual C# Express edition for a while, and had successfully used SQL Server 2005 express successfully since it was first released. I downloaded the new version with advanced services, created a new instance, and tried to use it. VC# wont connect cause it is still trying to connect to my old instance which no longer exists. Could someone please tell me how to make my new instance the one to log on to?

Error - SQL Server Default Settings / Visual Web Developer Express 2008
May 28, 2008I would occasionally get the error below when trying to access a database in my project/App_Data folder using Visual Web Developer Express 2008.
I would re-boot and the problem would go away.
I now have the problem all the time and am unable to access my database file in the App_Data folder nor ASPNETDB.mdf.
I am not trying to access a remote database. I have not knowingly changed any settings.
Has anyone seen this problem?
Can anyone help?

SQL Express - Cannot Open Default Database

I'm developing a windows forms app with a local database to be deployed on a couple of users machines. To aid deployment I'm using 'user instance' with a connection string of:
Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|gma.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;Connection Timeout=15;
I've started with a backup function based on the blog 'Backup and Restore with User Instance' linked to from this forum. Problem is I always get the error message 'Cannot open user default database. Login failed for user xxx'. This happens when I run in debugger or just run the exe directly.
Any help appreciated.

Feb 5, 2007When I try to connect to a default Express instance in Management Studio at the machine (Windows XP SP2) where the instance is installed, I'm getting the following error:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server)
What does provider: SQL Network Interfaces mean? Does it mean the Shared Memory, Named Pipes and TCP/IP?
Additional information:
1. The following Network Protocols are enabled: Shared Memory, Named Pipes, TCP/IP thru Configuration Manager
2. SQL Server Express default instance is running using NT
AUTHORITYNetworkService.
3. SQL Server Browser service is not running. I believe this is not needed unless I want to connect to the instance from another machine.
4. Has tried to disable Windows Firewall but I believe it should not be matter in this particular case since this is within the same machine.
5. Can connect to the instance in ODBC Administrator using System DSN thru Named Pipes or TCP/IP.
Can such error caused by not having sufficient memory so the system is running kind of slow?

Sep 25, 2006Hi Guys,We've lost the password for the sa. No other users belong to the admingroup. I've tried logging in using osql -E (windows authentication)without success. Is there anyway to reset the sa password? The databaseis MSDE and the version seems to be 7 (sql server 7 folder on pc). I have created an asmx web service that deserializes a JSON string and should execute stored procedures in SQL Server Express 2005, the database is a mdf file. I have created a System DSN which works fine, I have allowed the remote connections and TCP/IP and created the firewall exceptions for sqlserver and sqlbrowser. I believe there's an issue with my connection string, I have tried everything and it still won't connect.
I had another running example but that was on a previous install of Windows XP Pro SP1 with login and this asmx web service worked fine. I run Windows XP Pro SP2 without a login now so I guess I can't use Integrated Security=true or Trusted Connection=yes but does anybody know the default login of a database created in Windows Visual Developer Express?

Connection To The Server Was Reset Server Not Currently Accepting Connections

This is probably a really obvious question but I have been struggling with answering it for about two days now. (I may even be in the wrong forum) I work in a company with an internal network set up. I have been trying to connect to our website via FTP and it has worked ... well it did in the beginning. I think the server that our website is hosted on is a Unix server - this is a guess from reading the FTP transcripts of the various programs I've downloaded and tried out in an attempt to connect to it.
What happened:
I was working on an .ASP page in Dreamweaver, hit save without thinking, realised I wanted to make a few additional changes before uploading it onto the server, cancelled the transaction and voila. I haven't been able to connect to the remote server since.
Depending on the FTP program that I am using, I get a connection error along these lines:
- "Connection to the server was reset" "The server may temporarily be down or unavailable or not accepting connections"
I am a big newbie at this. I have turned off the windows firewall and tried turning on and off passive IP. I can connect from home but not from inside the building which has me think this has to do with a stray setting somewhere. My housemate suggested I try using the "telnet" command from DOS and see can I get any sort of connection from work. If I can't, he said, it's probably a firewall on the internal network itself.
Any other suggestions?

Who Is The Default Owner For Sql Express In Windows Authentication Mode?
Aug 1, 2007If i create a database in sql express in windows authentication mode, the database owner is in the format of 'MACHINENAMEUSERNAME'. If i connect this database to iis server i got login failed error message.
This is my connection string in my web.config :

I solved this problem by creating a login in sqlexpress called 'software92/aspnet' and creating a user for my database named aspnet under 'software92/aspnet' login. Then i changed the usrename in directory security of my iis virtual directory to 'software92/aspnet'.
This solves my problem. But i think i m solving this problem in a wrong way.
I think i should create that database under default owner. Who is the default owner?
I dont know the correct procedure to solve this.

SQL Express: Cannot Open User Default Database (error 4064)
Aug 8, 2006I've tried everything I've read that seemed applicable but still have a problem with the same error message, cannot open user default database.
This started detaching the database.
I'm using this connection string:
connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;GC_CashBook.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True"
It's a WinForms application.
When I run in debug mode, I connect fine. I can do anything in the db in VisualStudio 2005.
Then I open the SQL Management Studio, connect to Sql Express, try to open the same database and it can't open it.
BUT...
If I stop running the VisualStudio application (I can leave VS open, but not run the app I'm developing),
and reopen SQL Management Studio, connect to Sql Express and open the same db, I can do anything.
It's not just VS and SQL either.
If I open CodeSmith and load a template I use that access the db, I can run my templates fine as long as I'm not running the application in VS or have the db open in SQL Express.
In other words, I can have one connection at a time only on this sql express db.
Before I detached it, I could have multiple connections at the same time.
I checked the properties in sql express and it says I can have multiple (4 is specified) connections at a time;
Allow remote access is also checked.
Arrow/Rick is db owner, the default database is Master.
I don't know any other information to provide.
DId I miss something? How can I get multiple connections working again on this?
Any help would be appreciated!

Jul 22, 2015I have come up with an issue where I want to update data in a table using bulk/SET update to get the result shown in below code with output in column titled "Arrear Amt".

Logic required is that once the sum of column [ArrearAmt] of current row and all previous rows becomes greater than $100 then column [ChArrrearAmt] should show that summed up value and in else case the column [ChArrrearAmt] should show the same value as that of column [ArrearAmt].
Once the column [ChArrrearAmt] reaches the threshold of $100 then the same cycle should start again i.e. in above example rental#1 had $37.17 < $100 then rental#1 + rental#2 is also < $100 and at rental#3 sum of rental#1, rental#2 and rental#3 becomes $111.51 which is greater than $100 so its updated in column [CHArrrearAmt]. The same cycle start overs from rental#4 onwards however the summation of [ArrearAmt] will now begin after rental#4 onwards and not from the starting.
Below is the loop based SQL script which handles the above situation, however in BULK its a total deterioration of performance if thousands of rows are to be processed i.e. with a contract having multiple rentals.
The case here is that I have to use the result of previously updated column value of [ChArrrearAmt] to take decision for the next row, however with BULK update since the row is not yet updated with latest amount therefore the decision on next row is also giving wrong result.
This is the code with which I have achieved to update the column 'chArrear Amount', however its a loop based solution and performance killer.

SQL Express 2005 Forms: Default Field Format After Access Up-conversion
Apr 12, 2008I am converting an Access 2003 database into SQL 2005 Express for purposes of evaluating the SQL server environment as a future home for my data. One of the motivating factors in the conversion is the integration of LINQ with VB 2008.
Assuming that there was no conversion tool to migrate Access forms for use with SQL and VB 2008, I converted the Access data table and used the VB 2008 form designer to databind textbox controls to fields in the converted SQL database. Here are some basic questions:
The conversion from Access to SQL apparently did not include the default numeric formatting (currency, percentage, etc.) which was part of the Access data table. Is there a place in the SQL server environment to supply a default data format so that forms and reports referencing the field do not need to be manually formatted for each reference?
After converting the data table and spending 2 hours designing the dataform for the 80+ fields, I inadvertantly changed the table structure and found that the dataform was not happy (oops). I corrected the databindings manually for the few errant field references, but wonder if there is some wizard to do this automatically?
Is there a way to print out the dataform itself? I used the following code snippet in my Access form code-behind and I wonder if there is an equivalent VB 2008 function:

I installed C# with SQL Server Express, however I wanted to add the Full Text Searching and the SQL Server Management Studio Express, so I downloaded and installed the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP1. When I installed it over top of my current installation, it complained of version mismatching, and then C# failed to recognize that I had SQL 2005 Express installed at all.
What I'd like to know is, which version is more current (they have to be different, they had different version numbers, one was 9.xx.xxxx the other was 2005.9.xx.xxxx) The one bundled with C#, or the SP1 downloadable one.
Firstly, I want to be up todate as far as security patches, and Secondly, how do I add the full text searching and SSMSE to the one bundled with C# without breaking it.

Ok, there is no such program in this folder. The only thing in there is "SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting"...
The other thing I am greatly concerned with is this: All is want is for my webpages to be able to access my database for user authentication. I DO NOT want to grant the internet rights to remote connect to my database.

Dec 10, 2007I get the following error and have been trying to figure out why I keep getting it. Initially, I had placed my project under wwwroot folder and ran it under IIS and it gave this error. Then I moved it to my local C drive and same thing. I am sharing this project with two other co-workers and all our config files and code files are same...they don't get this error but I do. I checked that SQL Server Client Network Utility has TCP/IP and the 'Named Pipes' enabled. I thought maybe I have setting in the Visual Studio 2005 that I'm not aware of that's causing this problem...it can't be the server since my co-workers aren't having this error and can't be anything in the code since all of us are sharing this project through vss. I dont' think using different version of .net framework can create this error. I changed the version from 2.0 to use 1.1x and it gave same error... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Can I Reset Tbl ID To 1
Nov 27, 2007I have a table in my db that has an identity column as the primary key. I have deleted all the data and have tried to use truncate table on it to reset the identity column. The table has a number of foreign key constraints so it will not truncate.
Is there any way to reset the indentity column without removing the constraints?

gives the same output every time it is called, despite different parameters passed. @Output does not change as expected.
Any ideas guys?
