How To Reset The Identity Counter On A Table Referenced By A FOREIGN KEY Constraint?
Apr 4, 2006
I know that TRUNCATE TABLE can be used to reset the identity counter, but it can't be used on a table referenced by a foreign key. Anybody knows how to do that? Thanks.

Here is my issue I am new to 2005 sql server, and am trying to take my old data which is exported to a txt file and import it to tables in sql. The older database is non relational, and I had made several exports for the way I want to build my tables. I built my packages fine and everything is working until I start building relationships. I remove my foreign key and the table with the primary key will get updated for the package again. I need to update the data daily into sql, and once in it will only be update from the package until the database is moved over.
It will run and update with a primary key until I add a foreign key to another database.
Here is my error when running the package when table 2 has a foreign key.
[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query "TRUNCATE TABLE [consumer].[dbo].[Client] " failed with the following error: "Cannot truncate table 'consumer.dbo.Client' because it is being referenced by a FOREIGN KEY constraint.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

The parent table has the column OrderID which is the primary key. There is a unique non-clustered index in the same table with the same column and some included ones. A child table references the parent table on the OrderID column. Unfortunatelly, in the sys.foreign_keys table the index that has been used to acomplish the referential integrity is the unique non-clustered one instead of the primary key (which is the clustered index as well).
This is causing issues in some maintenance tasks where we need to disable all the indexes of the table apart from the clustered index. Disabling these indexes leeds to disabling the not properly configured foreign key as well. Maybe dropping the index create the constraint again and then recreate the index is a workarround but I wish to have something more elegant and future proof.

I have a remote DB I am wokring with at present. The DBA has provided me with a non owner LOGIN so I can't copy tables from the live to the staged DB as objects I can only copy tables and data.
The PKEY and IDENTITY COLUMNS get reset to just regular columns on each table. I can restore the PKEY constraint and have come across the DBCC CHECKIDENT to get the new ident value. I just can't figure out how to set a column to be an identity. The ALTER TABLE command isn't having any of it.
I am obviously missing the right bit on Books online
any suggestions?
many thanks

Hi
I am trying to update tables "Table A" & " TableB" with a new value for a particular column1. Now "TableA" contains a foreign key "FK1" defined on it and is referencing another table "Table B" containing the similar column "Column1"
Because of this constraint I was not able to update TableA and TableB. My question is
1) If i wanted to go ahead with this update, what are the possible ways?
2) If only solution is to drop the constraint. Then How do i know the definition for this particular Foreign key, i mean it may refer some columns in Table B. I wanted to know the complete definition of it so that i can rebuild the constraint after the update. Right now i can see only the constraint name when i use sp_help TableA. But how do i know the complete reference made by this foreign key.
Early reply is much appreciated
Thanks!

I am in the middle of taking course 2073B €“ Programming a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Database. I noticed that in Module9: Implementing User-Defined Functions exercise 2, page 25; step 2 is not returning the correct answer.
Select employeeid,name,title,mgremployeeid from dbo.fn_findreports(2)
It returns manager id for both 2 and 5 and I think it should just return the results only for manager id 2. The query results for step 1 is correct but not for step 2.
Somewhere in the code I think it should compare the inemployeeid with the previous inemployeeid, and then add a counter. If the two inemployeeid are not the same then reset the counter. Then maybe add an if statement or a case statement. Can you help with the logic? Thanks!
Here is the code of the function in the book:
/*
** fn_FindReports.sql
**
** This multi-statement table-valued user-defined
** function takes an EmplyeeID number as its parameter
** and provides information about all employees who
** report to that person.
*/

/*
** As a multi-statement table-valued user-defined
** function it starts with the function name,
** input parameter definition and defines the output
** table.

INSERT @reports

Obviously to delete all records from DB table is simple, however, I would like to make my whole Live DB pretty much empty. I've copied all my data from my test DB over to my live DB (didn't mean to but I did). I would like to remove all the data and the identity values, resetting them back at their original values. Is there a simple way or do I have to do it the hard way. That being going in and removing Identity, saving and then placing identity back on the DB Table.

Reset the Identity IncrementHello:I have a table with a bigint type column (field) that has an identity seedof 1 and an identity increment of 1. The column is the primary key for thetable.After I backup and clean out the database (delete all of the data in the DB)I need to have the column with the identiy seed/increment value reset to 1automatically. (start counting at 1 again). How does one do that, becauseas it is now, the DB keeps increasing the value of the column from where itleft off, regardless of the fact that I deleted all of the data in thetable.The DB is MS SQL Server 2000.Thanks and appreciate any help.Ryan Kennedy

Hi
I have a table with Identity column starting from value 1 and autoincrementing 1 for every new value. I inserted (5) rows and then deleted these rows. But, when i insert a new row, it was taking the last identity value(5)and inserting the rows with next identity value i.e., 6 for this column. I dont want that. Everytime, I delete and insert rows in to this table.I wanted the rows to start with 1 for this column.
Any help on this is highly appreciated.
Thanks!

I have a demo database in SqlCE that I am getting ready to deploy. I deleted a bunch of test records and now want to reset the identity columns. The compact method runs fine, but the identity columns are not being reset? So when I add a new record, the returned identity value is over 1,000 even though the highest value is only 50.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
