How To Select First Missing Number In Order

Feb 21, 2014

I am assigning temporary Ids in my table, and right now I am assigning new ones via find the MAX(Temp_Id), stripping out the number and adding one.

Since these are temporary I would like to be able to reuse older ones when they are no longer in the table.

For example I have:
ID0001
ID0002
ID0003
ID0006

My code right now will add ID0007. I would like to re-use ID0004 and ID0005 since they're no longer in use. How do I go about do this?

Conditional Order By - Sort Result Set By Employee Number Ascending Order

Sep 24, 2012

In SQL sERVER 2008, I have two fields - Depatment and Employees. I need to sort the result set by employee number ascending order, with following exception

1)when department number = 50 - the preferred order is Employee # - 573 followed by 551-572 (employee # belong to Dept 50 = 551-573)

2)When Department number = 20 – the preferred sort order is Employee # 213-220, followed by Employee # 201-213 (employee # belong to Dept 20 = 201-220)

How shall I achieve this?

Default Sort Order - Open Table - Select Without Order By

Mar 27, 2008

Hi!

I recently run into a senario when a procedure quiered a table without a order by clause. Luckily it retrived data in the prefered order.

The table returns the data in the same order in SQL Manager "Open Table"

So I started to wonder what deterimins the sort order when there is no order by clause ?

I researched this for a bit but found no straight answers. My table has no PK, but an identiy column.

Peace.

Specify Order For Select Results, Order By: Help!

Nov 17, 2006

Lets say I have a table named [Leadership] and I want to select the field 'leadershipName' from the [Leadership] Table.

My query would look something like this:

Select leadershipName
From Leadership

Now, I would like to order the results of this query... but I don't want to simply order them by ASC or DESC. Instead, I need to order them as follows:

Executive Board Members, Delegates, Grievance Chairs, and Negotiators

My question: Can this be done through MS SQL or do I need to add a field to my [Leadership] table named 'leadershipImportance' or something as an integer to denote the level of importance of the position so that I can order on that value ASC or DESC?

Thanks,

Zoop

RAID Set For Database XXX Is Missing Member Number 1.

Jul 24, 2000

I saw a previous request for help, but I did not see a solution (other than deleting and re-initializing the dump.

I'm copying a database from one server to another and I repetedly get this error when I try to restore from the .bak file I create on backup. The host machine for the database is a workstation (no RAID). The Destination does have RAID, but is funtioning properly (according to the SysOps and in testing file copies). I've tried copying the .bak file to several different drives several different times and I get the same error. I also tried to back-up a database on the Destination server and restore the .bak file to a newly created database and I get the same error.

Anyone solve this problem?

Transact SQL :: Trying To Do A Simple Sum But Missing Transaction Number

Jul 22, 2015

I have a transaction number in my mapping table. I have a matching transaction number in my PDHist table. Sometimes I have matching transaction numbers in my PD table, but not always. This is causing no records to be returned.  I have a One to Many relationship between my mapping table and both PD and PDHist.

Also, I need to check for nulls in my foreign exchange table.I can’t post the SQL because this is a classified project.  However, it should be something like this, I think.

IIf(IsNull([Redem]![FX Rate]),([PDHist]![Remaining Balance]+[PD]![Closing Balance(TC)]).

The addition isn’t working. I think with a small push I can get this straightened out.

Use Trigger To Number Each Order Line

Jan 24, 2006

I am wanting to set up a trigger on our SQL server 2000 to create a sequential order line number in the OrderDetails table for OrderID.

I will be inserting data from an OrderLinesAdd table into the OrderLines table but want the LineNumber field to be incremented by 1 for each group of orders grouped by OrderID that I insert into the table eg.

OrderID LineNumber
1 - 1
1 - 2
1 - 3
2 - 1
2 - 2
3 - 1
3 - 2

I have just started using SQL so am not sure how I go about writing the code for the trigger ? It would seem like I will need to use the Max function in the code.

Thanking you in advance.

INSERT-SELECT Depending On The Select:ed Order

Aug 15, 2006

I'm doing a INSERT...SELECT where I'm dependent on the records SELECT:ed to be in a certain order. This order is enforced through a clustered index on that table - I can see that they are in the proper order by doing just the SELECT part.

However, when I do the INSERT, it doesn't work (nothing is inserted) - can the order of the records from the SELECT part be changed internally on their way to the INSERT part, so to speak?

Actually - it is a view that I'm inserting into, and there's an instead-of-insert trigger on it that does the actual insertions into the base table. I've added a "PRINT" statement to the trigger code and there's just ONE record printed (there should be millions).

Transact SQL :: Find Missing Months In A Table For The Earliest And Latest Start Dates Per ID Number?

Aug 27, 2015

I need to find the missing months in a table for the earliest and latest start dates per ID_No.  As an example:

create table #InputTable (ID_No int ,OccurMonth datetime)
insert into #InputTable (ID_No,OccurMonth)
select 10, '2007-11-01' Union all
select 10, '2007-12-01' Union all
select 10, '2008-01-01' Union all
select 20, '2009-01-01' Union all
select 20, '2009-02-01' Union all
select 20, '2009-04-01' Union all
select 30, '2010-05-01' Union all
select 30, '2010-08-01' Union all
select 30, '2010-09-01' Union all
select 40, '2008-03-01'

For the above table, the answer should be:

ID_No OccurMonth
----- ----------
20 2009-02-01
30 2010-06-01
30 2010-07-01

1) don't include an ID column,

2) don't use the start date/end dates in the data or

3) use cursors, which are forbidden in my environment.

Transact SQL :: Select From A Select Using Row Number With Left Join

The select command below will output one patient’s information in 1 row:

Patient id
Last name
First name

OP Policy # 1
OP Coverage Plan 2

This works great if there is at least one OP coverage.   There are 3 tables in which to get information which are the patient table, the coverage table, and the coverage history table.   The coverage table links to the patient table via pat_id and it tells me the patient's coverage plan and in which priority to bill.  The coverage history table links to the patient and coverage table via patient id and coverage plan and it gives me the effective date.

select src.pat_id, lname, fname, addr1,
max(case when rn = 1 then src.coverage_plan_ end) as OP_Coverage1,
max(case when rn = 1 then src.policy_id end) as OP_Policy1,

Create A View That Will Give Most Current Status (by Statusdatetime) Of Each Order Number

Jan 20, 2015

We are having trouble figuring out how to create a view for this scenario:

We have a status log table that holds an order number, statusdatetime, and statuscode. This table will have multiple status' for the same order number. I want to create a view that will give me the most current status (by statusdatetime) of each order number. This view would show: order number, statusdatetime, and statuscode.

Here is a sample of the data:

Order numberStatusDateTimeStatusCode
1234512/15/2014 15:00CREATE
1234512/15/2014 16:30CONFIRMED
4567812/16/2014 08:00CREATE
9876412/18/2014 12:00CREATE
9876412/19/2014 08:00CONFIRMED
4567812/17/2014 09:30CONFIRMED
4567812/19/2014 15:30IN-TRANSIT

So my view should result in :

Order numberStatusDateTimeStatusCode
1234512/15/2014 16:30CONFIRMED
9876412/19/2014 08:00CONFIRMED
4567812/19/2014 15:30IN-TRANSIT

Missing Row In Simple Conditioned SELECT Statement

Nov 7, 2007

Hey there everyone,

I'm sure there's a good reason for this, I just have no idea what it is.

If I run a SELECT * statement on one of my tables, the result set is missing one of the records.

If I SELECT that specific row (by identifier or anything else really), it returns just fine.

Any kind of select (e.g. WHERE ID > X) fails to return that specific row.

Any idea why this might be happening?

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Order By In A INSERT INTO..SELECT

I have the following basic statements being executed:Create a temp table, #TempPagingInsert Into #TempPaging (Col1, Col2)Select Col1, Col2 From SomeOtherTable Order By Col2, Col1Select * from #TempPagingI can't provide a reproduceable scenario right now without making thisinto a 200K post, so I'm hoping someone will know what the issue is.. Ican't find anything regarding this in BOL.Basically the order is off a little bit every now and then when thereare large amounts of data, like more than a couple hundred rows. Isthere something I need to do to guarantee the originally selectedorder? This is very important that it be in order from the original selectstatement as this is for paging. Adding an order by in the secondselect from the temp table will not fix the problem. In this particularinstance that I have reproduced we are using SQL 2005 but have alsoseen this on SQL 2000 servers. I had previously asked this question asI was using a SELECT INTO statement, but now we are manually creatingthe temp table (Pain in the ass) and still having the same issue. Bestcase scenario is for it to work for a SELECT INTO.Any ideas?

The SubTabIDvalue of an item identifies to what top-level category a subcategorybelongs. The TabOrderID specifies in what order the items should be sorted,e.g. 'Pick-Ups' comes first and 'Campers' second. Thanks very much for your help & efforts!Martin
