How To Selectively Apply A Filter

Based on some report parameters value?
My dataset to display is coming from a stored procedure. Now based on a report parameter which user selects, I want to filter the results being displayed but only if user selects certain value in the parameter drop down. I tried using iif statement and I can use it to filter dataset based on parameter but can't get how NOT to apply the filter for a particular value of the user selected parameter.

The user wants to be able, using excel, to apply a filter to all measures in every measure group. I though that I can create a dimension with a single level with two members, let´s say "on" and "off" and depending on the selected member and using an IIF statement decide which formula applies to the calculated measures.
I have serious doubts about the performance and for this technique because I am thinking as a .Net developer and not as a cube developer. Maybe it is better to resolve it scoping the measures but I cannot figure it out.

I need to translate a user€™s regional setting into one of our own language codes before I send it through as a filter to the model query. If our language codes were the same, the filter would look like this in the report filter -
Language Code = GetUserCulture()
Which translates to this in the database query (for us english) -
table.language_code = 'EN-us'
And of course I need it to look like this -
table.language_code = 'ENG'
I would like the logic to be globally available to all report writers (ie not forcing each report writer to have an iif or case stataement). I was thinking custom assemblies or maybe a database function, but at this level of the filter, I cannot seem to figure out how to embed a database function call to apply to the filter criteria like this
Language Code = dbo.ConvertFcnIWrote(GetUserCulture())
Or how I would access the custom assembly in the filter expression.
Do you have a recommended implementation for this situation?

Hi... I'm reading the MS Press 70-442 Self-Paced Training kit, and I'm having problems with this example.
I'd like help getting it to work correctly, or understand why it is isn't working the way I planned.
On page 67, the lab is about the APPLY operator (CROSS APPLY and OUTER APPLY). I first have to input a sample table-valued function into the AdventureWorks database:

My problem is with the WHERE clause... According to page 56, CROSS APPLY returns only rows from the outer table that produces a result set, so why do I need to explicitly filter NULL values?
When I remove the WHERE clause, the query retrieves lots of NULL AvgCost values.
Again, according to page 56, it is the OUTER APPLY that returns all rows that return a result set and will include NULL values in the columns that are returned from the table-valued function.
So, in short, I don't see the difference between CROSS APPLY and OUTER APPLY, using this example, when I remove the WHERE clause?
(Please refrain from introducing another example into this question.)

I have a scenario whereby I will have 200+ clients putting messages onto a service broker queue. This message will go through a pipes and filters based messaging system, and ultimately the message will pop out the other end.
Here's the question: what is a good way of making sure the same client gets the response to the message he received. Is there anyway I can selectively receive messages from a queue, i.e., pass a correlation id in with the message, and then filter messages based on that id.
Or if someone knows a better way to do it altogether i'd really appreciate it.

So here is the question, on the last line, MAX(LAST T.LastDate) has a date, or it's NULL.
How can I change the statement to say, IF MAX(LAST T.LastDate) IS NULL use NULL?

This might be tricky, but I wanted to know if I can add a row to the table and decide wht keys I want to generate for that row.
For example: I have a table which have 4 different keys. I want to generate only 2 of them for certain rows and all for the remaining rows. Is this possible? This does sound like an advanced feature for sql databases, but its easy to do with custom dbs like berkeley db

I have a bit of an issue with an app I'm working on. The app integrates two different SQL Server applications - both of which employ recursive triggers to some extent. My integration basically serves to establish a link between different tables in the applications, and maintains consistency between the two applications (where common fields exist) by employing INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE triggers.
In order to prevent infinitely recursive triggers (AppA.TableA's update trigger updates AppB.TableA. AppB.TableA's update trigger updates AppA.TableA...and so on, and so on) I need to be able to somehow selectively prevent these triggers only from executing recursively. For example, if the trigger in AppA is what calls the trigger in AppB, I do not want AppB's trigger to fire (and vice versa).
Further Information:
The apps may be on the same, or different, SQL servers.
I'm fully aware of the database-wide options to disable trigger recursion (ALTER DATABASE), but I can't disable recursion for the balance of the triggers in the databases.
The integration will run on either SQL 2000 or SQL 2005 - and perhaps one server on 2000, and one on 2005 (depending upon the deployment).
I'm perfectly amenable to handling it in the trigger code, if possible, but I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to properly and efficiently manage that.
I know that SQL Server will kill infinitely recursive triggers once it detects them, but that doesn't exactly solve my original problem.

I have about 1200 sql files in one of my folders. Almost all of these files do data inserts and updates, so they should be run only once. As and when required I have manually ran around 150 of them already. Whenever I ran any of these scripts, I log that file name into a log table in my sql server including the execution time. Since running 1000+ more files takes a lot of time, I want to automate running of these files through a batch file. But I also want to filter the files that are already run.My file list looks like follows.
InsertToOrderTypes.sql
UpdateClientAddress.sql
DeleteDuplicateOrders.sql
InsertToEmailAddress.sql
ConsolidateBrokerData.sql
UpdateInventory.sql
EliminateInvalidOfficeLocations.sql
My log table in the database looks like this.

Now I want to create a batch file to run the remaining files from my directory to my sql server. I also want to wrap each of these sql file executions in a transaction and log success/failure along with the runtime and filename into sqlfileexecutionlog table. As I add new sql files into this directory, I should be able to run the same batch file and execute only the sql files that have not bee run.

Here is my problem:
I use SQL Server 2005. I have approx. 50 tables in my database and 30 of them have a filed named "CompanyID". Example:
create table A (ID int identity, NAME varchar(100), COMPANYID int)create table A (ID int identity, REF_ID int, FIELD1 varchar(100), FIELD2 varchar(100), COMPANYID int)
Also there are nearly 200 stored procedures that read data from these tables. Example:
create procedure ABCasbegin /* some checks and expressions here ... */ select ... from A inner join B on (A.ID = B.REF_ID) where ... /* ... */end;
All my queries in the Stored procedure does not filter the tables by CompanyID, so they process the entire data.
However, now we have a requirement to separate the data for each company. That means that we have to put a filter by CompanyID to each of those 20 tables in each query where the tables appear.
Firstly, I put the CompanyID in the context so now its value is accessible through the context_info() function. Thus I do not need now to pass it as a parameter to the stored procedures.
However, I don't know what is the easiest and fastest way to filter the tables. Example:
I modified the above mentioned procedure in the following way:
create procedure ABCasbegin /* some checks and expressions here ... */
-- gets the CompanyID from the context: DECLARE @CompanyID int; SELECT @CompanyID = CONVERT(float, CONVERT(varchar(128), context_info()))
select ... from A inner join B on (A.ID = B.REF_ID) where ...

Now I have the desired filter by CompanyID. However, modifying over 200 stored procedures is rather tedious work and I don't think that this is the best approach. Is there any functionality in SQL Server that can provide the possibility to put an automatic filter to the tables.
For example: when I wrote "SELECT * FROM A", the actual statements to be executed would be "SELECT * FROM A WHERE CompanyID = CONVERT(float, CONVERT(varchar(128), context_info()))".
I was looking for something like "INSTEAD OF SELECT" triggers but I didn't manage to find any answer.
I would very grateful is someone suggests a solution for something like "global table filter" (that will help me make an easy refactoring)?

I have a table that has a group. In this group, I want to filter by 2 different expressions, concatenated with an OR. BUT I can't change the "And/Or" column value for the first entry because it is grayed out. The column will automatically change to an OR value if both my expression column fields are the same (which I don€™t want) but if I put any other value in to the expression field of the second row, the "And/Or" field of the first row automatically changes to an AND.
PLEASE! How do I get the And/Or field "ungrayed" so I can change it to what I want?
The 2 filters I and using check the UserID = to the user, and the other is checking a count to get the Top N 1. (So just showing the current user and the top producer)

I am new to DTS.

But it looks the parameter could not place a globalVariable to it and parse it with error.
One alternate way probably need to create a proc to pass a parm to it....
Also, how could pass a globalVariable to a FTP task?

I am trying to install sql server sp3a. I checked the version before and after the sp is applied, and it shows:
8.00.194
Now, according to the sp3a readme:

the following versions should show:
SQL Server 2000 Original Release 8.00.194 RTM
Database Components SP1 or Desktop Engine SP1 8.00.384 SP1
Database Components SP2 or Desktop Engine SP2 8.00.534 SP2
Database Components SP3 or SP3a, or Desktop Engine SP3 or SP3a 8.00.760 SP3
This would imply that after installing sp3a and restarting, the version reported should now be 8.00.760. However, it still shows 8.00.194. So it appears to have not really installed, althought the sp3a installation ran without incident. So, how can I get the sp3a to not just act like it installed, but actually get it to install? Also, I have shut down all mssql services and rebooted, applied patch, and rebooted again. Doesn't help.
Also, if it is really installing, is there another way to tell?
Anyway, I really need to be able to install sp3a to see if it fixes another problem I'm having. Unfortunetly, since I can't even tell if the sp3a is installing, I can't tell if it really doesn't help or not. Thanks.

I want to show top selling items for each store. Sample SQL Query is "SELECT TOP n ItemNumber FROM Inventory Group By Store" n - is the dynamic value. I am accepting this n parameter from the user. If the user is giving 5 for n then, I want to show top 5 selling items for each store. It will be greatfull, If anybodies giving me an idea of how to do this?.

Is anyone else having trouble with the Apply button under the permissions tab?
I can change permissions, click apply, the changes are shown, but when I access the database, the changes arn't made. If I close the permissions windows and re open the changes arn't made.
Will SP1 fix this?(it's not listed in the fix text file)

I try applying the SP 4 on the default instance of the msde 2000 and when it stops after a minute generates the log and says it was successful but no upgrade is done. I use the following command setup /upgradesp sqlrun SECURITYMODE=SQL BLANKSAPWD=1 DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 /L*v C:MSDELog.log
On the same machine I has installed also SQLExpress.
I stop the sql services before issuing the command.
Any Ideas?
