How To Setup Link Server Properly

Sep 5, 2007

Hi,

I want to access another database seating on another server so I configured the Linked server with SQL Server as the server type. I set the security as NT_AUTHORITYSYSTEM and checked the Impersonate. In Server Options, I set the RPC Out to true then I clicked ok.

I got this error:

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

The OLE DB Provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "server1" reported an error. Authentication failed.
Cannot initialize the datasource object of OLE DB Provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "server1".

OLE DB Provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "server1" returned message "Invalid authorization specification". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7399)

Note that my NT login is added as "Administrators" on the Server i want to connect to.

Have I missed anything?

Trying To Setup ODBC Link To SQL 2005 Express

Nov 8, 2006

Hello All

I am trying to use SQL 2005 express as a datasource for a mailmerge with Word 2000.

I have created a ODBC link successfully. I have enabled all the protocols. When I open the ODBC link, all I see is a ODBC drop down. I cant see or select any database tables?

When I open the dsn I get a dialog caled Header Record Delimiters. I accept the defaults and then I get another Dialog called Mail Merge Recipients with a whole lot of connection info, but no sign of any database tables.

Any Ideas?

Setup And Upgrade :: One Machine 6 IPs - How To Setup DNS For Server

Apr 24, 2015

I am running a number of SQL instances on my PC. Within the network, I have think server with various System Center components. For compatibility reasons, some features of System Center 2012 R2 had to be delegated to different SQL databases. My question is, because there is now more than one IP address on my system, and each instance of SQL is assigned to its own IP, is there a way to setup DNS and SQL so the namespace points to the desired IP address? For Instance:

MSSQL2008 instance is set to run on = 11.12.13.1
MSSQL2012 is set to run on = 11.12.13.2
IN DNS:
A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.1
A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.2

If I want to use MSSQL2008 by specifying Mike-PC as the DNS name, how would I do that with 100% accuracy? If there is another way to get the job done, I am more than willing to approach this differently.

Access2003 Cannot Link (but Excel2003 Can Link) To Tables In Access97 Database

Feb 20, 2008

I have created an Access2003 project (existing data) that links to external data. First I connected to a SQL Server 2000 database. Success. Then I tried to set up a Transact SQL data connection to a legacy MDW-secured Access97 database. (A third-party VB6 application goes against it, and we don't have the source code, so we cannot upgrade it.)

The Transact SQL link tests OK but I cannot select any of the tables or queries from the list presented. However, with the same credentials, I can use these same objects in Excel 2003.

When setting up the link in Access2003, I specify JET 4.0 OLE DB Provider, I enter the MDW file on the All tab, a username and a password on the Connection tab where I browse to the MDB file, and specify Shared Deny None on the Advanced tab. When I test the connection, it tests OK ("Test connection succeeded"). Yet on the "Select the Database and Table/Cube which contains the data you want" dialog, "(Default)" appears in the grayed-out dropdown. Then, beneath that dropdown, there is a grid with Name and Description columns. The grid contains query names but the grid is not enabled. The list of queries is this table is grayed out. Neither of the scrollbars works.

BUT... if I use the SAME username and password in Excel2003, and specify the same MDW, there is no problem working with these same database objects in the legacy Access97 database. WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT THE WIZARD IN EXCEL THAT ALLOWS IT TO SUCCEED AND THE WIZARD IN ACCESS THAT CAUSES IT TO FAIL HERE? In Excel, the list of available providers says Microsoft Access Driver, not JET 4.0 OLE DB Provider.

Thanks

Cannot Link To SQL Tables Using ODBC Link Table In Access 2003

Feb 3, 2006

When trying to link to an SQL table in Access 2003, the software appears to be malfunctioning.

The sequence of events is File - Get External Data - Link Tables - Files of Type: ODBC Databases().

The Problem: On two of my computers, the select data source window does not pop up, preventing me from linking to any ODBC data source.

Observations:  This function has worked normally in the recent past and works on other computers running Access 2003.  One difference between the computers working and non-working computers is Norton Antivirus 2006 (recent upgrade).

Has anyone experienced anything like this?  What's going on?

SQL Server WILL NOT Import Properly From Excel!!

Aug 3, 2004

ARRGGH, I'm going to kill Excel or SQL Server!! I've spent an hour on this and I can't get it working. I'm importing some address data, and several of the zip codes are importing as NULL, even though in the Excel sheet, they look fine! Excel is complaining, something about the zip codes are numbers entered as text..whatever.. so I edited my SQL import and made it so the ZIP field gets created as varchar 50 instead of float. It still won't import right.

Someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

VS2005 Error: Connection To SQL Server Files (*.mdf) Requires SQL Server Express 2005 To Function Properly.

Mar 6, 2008

Good Evening All,

I've serached this forum and Google'd for a resolution to this issue, to no avail. Here's the scenario:
I'm running VS 2005 on Windows Media Center laptop and need to create ASP.net membership for my web application built using VB. I have SQL Server Developer installed with instance name MSSQLSERVER. Previously, I uninstalled SQL Express and installed Developer edition and can now open and utilize Management Studio.

Now, when I try to create a new SQL Server database in my solution's App_Data directory, I receive the above error. I already changed instance name in VS2005 per Tools-Options-Database Tools-Data Connections to MSSQLSERVER.

Could someone provide me with a list of procedures to ensure proper setup of VS2005 with SQL Server Developer Edition?

Thanks much for your help.

SQL Server 2005 Order By Date Does Not Sort Properly

Here is the view:SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT Period_DateFROM dbo.Period_SummaryORDER BY Period_Date DESCThe date seems to be a random order.I don't have this problem in the SQL Server 2000 version of thedatabase.Help please! Thanks,Jerry

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Ensuring Upgrade Advisor Is Running Properly?

Oct 30, 2015

I have a SQL Server 2008 instance that is running on "LiveServer" our production database (ProdDB) - and we need to upgrade to 2014. In order to do some upgrade testing, I spun up a VM with the same version of SQL server on the test VM (TestServer), did a backup of the production DB from the live server, and restored it to TestServer under a different name (ProdDBUA).

I then installed SQL2014 Upgrade advisor onto TestServer, and ran it, checking all the boxes (reporting services etc..) and it all came back clean - no issues whatsoever - not a single warning even. I'm under the impression that stored procs/functions etc... all reside within the DB, so a backup will include those. Is that correct?

The problem is, I know I have stored Procs, functions and views that use deprecated joins in that LiveServer.ProdDB. What do I need to do/configure/check in order to make sure that the Upgrade Advisor is actually checking through all that T-SQL that has deprecated code? I want to have a list to give to my report writers of procs/functions/views that need to be rewritten prior to the upgrade going live.

If there is a modification that needs to be run on the TestServer.ProdDBUA, a cursor to change the path etc. DB is running in Compatibility mode 90.

Error Provider Cannot Be Found. It May Not Be Properly Installed. After Deploying Application On Windows 2003 Server

May 23, 2007

hello folks

i have recently started to work with the analysis services and i am having some problems.

i have made a web application that for now just tries to connect to an analysis server.

The server is installed on an xp sp 2 system.

for testing, i used my local computer, which is running also win xp sp2. After deploying, the application can connect to the AS server on the other machine. the problem occurs when i try to deploy the applicatuion on the production server, which is running win 2k3 server on 32 bit. When deploying, i use the same connection string, so it should try to connect to the AS server installed on a win xp sp2 system.

The first thing that came to my mind was to check the MDAC versions, be cause of the message: "Provider cannot be found. It may not be properly installed."

on my computer, where the application worked ok, the version is MDAC 2.8 SP 1 Windows XP SP 2

on the win2k3 server, the MDAC version is : MDAC 2.8 SP2.... i thought it was the version of the service pack, so o searched for the update of MDAC 2.8 SP1, trying to install mdac 2.8 sp2 to see if i was to see the same error, but i found that mdac 2.8 sp2 is only for win2k3 server, and for win xp is mdac 2.8 sp1, according to this link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/884103

Now i got confused and have no clues how to make this work...

Can anybody give any hint?

How Can I Re-install The Northwind Database In SQL Server Management Studio Express?Use SqlDataSet && The .Fill Method Properly?

Apr 30, 2007

Hi all,

In my VB 2005 Express, I created a Windowds Form application "shcDataSet" that used 1 SqlConnection, 1 SqlDataSet and 3 SqlDataAdapters associated with the Northwind Database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express. The SqlConnection had "User Instance" in the following ConnectionString: Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataorthwnd.mdf";Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True. The 3 SqlDataAdapters were for the Northwind files "Customers", "Orders" and "Order Details" used in the SQLDataSet "AllOrders" with a AllOrders.xsd file. I ran the "shcDataSet" applicatyion and it worked fine. After the execution of "shcDataSet", I checked the Northwind database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express and clicked on "+" in front of Northwind database-I did not see any file showed up and I got the following error message: Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.SmoEnum) Additional information: one or more files do not match the primary file of the database. If you are attempting to attach a database, retry the operation with the correct files. If this is an existing database, the file may be corrupted and should be restored from a backup. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error:5173). If I executed the "shcDataSet" application again, I got a new error: SqlException was unhandled - Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'myPC##myName' ------->daCustomers.Fill(AllOrders11, "Customers"). I have 3 questions to ask: (1) How can I re-install the Northwind database in SQL Server Management Studio Express? (2) When I use the .Fill Method, do I have to tell the SQL Server Management Studio Express to load and/or unload the Northwind files "Customers", "Orders" and "Order Details"? (3) After I executed the "shcDataSet", should I Upload the 3 Northwind files back to the SQL Server Management Studio Express? Please help and advise. Thanks, Scott Chang

Alternative To Link Server

Oct 10, 2007

Hi all,

I am having two databases(MS-Sql) on two different servers.Let say they are Server1 and Server2.I am having some stored procedures(sps) which are executing on Server1.Results given by these sps are 6 different tables(Theses tables are temporary tables e.g #Table1 and they are created in one of the sps on Server1). And I want to use these 6 tables on Server2.
But constraint here is, i can create link server for Server1 from Server2 but not from Server1 to Server2.So i can not access Server2 directly from Server1.
Even if i am using custom tables here instead of temp tables(#) it will take me to solution but that is again a constraint i can not do this.
Is there any alternative solution for Link server in this case?
I dont want to go for OPENROWSET and OPENDATASOURCE b'coz of performance issue.

Thank you in advance!!

Link Access To SQL Server

May 30, 2007

I have a problem that I want to solve by linking MS Access to SQL Server 2000 or 2005.

The problem is a 3 party MS Access '97 application that is no longer supported so a new system is currently being built in SQL Server. The Access database has a UI for small amounts of input and viewing but most of the work is done through a WaveLink application. The Wavelink application allows users on the shop floor via wireless devices to pick and count product which then updates Access. There has always been record locking issues that caused some delays at the wireless devices but nothing dramatic. Until now. The wireless network and wireless devices have been upgraded and now record locking (I presume that whats causing the problems) is now causing large productivity delays requiring constant intervention.
The Wavelink application is also being updated from VB6 to VB.Net to work with the new SQL Server application. One of the requests from the client is that the Wavelink upgrade somehow fix the problem with the Access database.

My idea was to link the Access database to a SQL Server so that the wireless devices go through SQL Server to Access hopefully taking the load off Access. Is this possible? Would SQL Server prevent the record locks and provide a better multi user environment or is that something that is inherent in OLEDB Jet and linking is not going to circumvent this problem?

Regards
