2 MS Server 2000 running on 2 machine. Let's SA and SB
On SA, add linkserver point to SB.Then I can run select statement as:
select * from SB.mydb.dbo.table1
On SA, there is a stored procedure sp_test, I can run select statement inside this sp.
But when I put insert statement in sp_test as:
insert into SB.my.db.dbo.table1.......
I get 7391 error as:
Server: Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_test, Line 105
The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction.

OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'SQLOLEDB' ITransactionJoin::JoinTransaction returned 0x8004d00a].In sp_test, there begin transaction statement.
The operation system on both server is window 2000.

I'm running SQL Server 2000 and I have a linked server setup to another SQL Server 2000 box. I've got a stored procedure that creates a temporary table and is pulling information from local tables and from tables located on the linked server. When I run this stored procedure it bombs on me when it hits the linked server part returning an error message of:
Server: Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Procedure app_GetOfficeOrders, Line 29
The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction.
OLE/DB provider returned message: New transaction cannot enlist in the specified transaction coordinator.
Now I can run a query against a table located on the linked server that returns just a table count and everything works fine. I'm just having problems with that one stored procedure. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
P.S. I have verified that it isn't a time-out error and it isn't a permissions issues.
Thanks

Hi,
I
was making a linked server connection between SQL Server 2000 and
Oracle 8.1.5 (both running on Windows 2000 Server), and I was creating
an insert trigger in one of the SQL Server table to insert the same
value to the Oracle table. But when I try to make an insert to the
table, the following error occurred :
Server: Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Procedure <triggername>, Line xx
The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'MSDAORA' was unable to begin a distributed transaction.
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'MSDAORA' ITransactionJoin::JoinTransaction returned 0x8000d048].
I
tried to change the trigger into a SELECT statement only and the error
still occurred. But when I tried to insert a row directly to the linked
server via Query Analyzer, it succeeded.
I have read KB 280106, KB
306212, and KB 329332, and I've tried SET XACT_ABORT ON statement, but
none of them can solve the problem.
If there's anyone who has idea on what's wrong or has a suggestion what I should try please help.
Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure if this is the correct group for this messages, but here it is anyway.
I have a job that has 3 steps to, periodicly the job errors out on Step 1. Following is the message (from Job History).
--------------------
Executed as user: SMIsqladmin. The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction. Can someone please explain this message, I have no idea how to fix it or what the cause is.

Hi:
When I tried to run a remote proc (with one parameter of date to return a set of records (no problem in return records) and to insert to the local database table A, with following errors:
Server: Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: New transaction cannot enlist in the specified transaction coordinator. ]
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'SQLOLEDB' ITransactionJoin::JoinTransaction returned 0x8004d00a].
SET XACT_ABORT ON
BEGIN DISTRIBUTED TRAN
insert tblA(column1, column2, column3)
exec [remoteServerB].DBX.dbo.usp_XYZ '03/28/2006 '
COMMIT TRAN
Both remote SQL and Local SQL are SQL2000 with sp4 and both Distributed Transaction Coordinator are on.
Any idea?
thanks

I am receiving the following error when I run a stored procedure:Server: Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Procedure spXXXXThe SP inserts data into a local (sql 2000) table from a remote sql2000 database. The SP works fine until I add a trigger to thedestination. The contents of the trigger do not appear to matter, as Ihave tried removing everything but one line, which is just a declarestatement. Updating the table with the trigger (even the full trigger)in place does not cause an error. Running the SP without the triggeron the table does not cause the error.I have the exact same setup on another server. Both the SP and thetrigger are IDENTICAL. This setup works on one server, but not theother. The only difference I can see is that the non-working server isWindows 2000 Server, while the working server is Windows 2003 Server.Any idea what's going on here? Thanks in advance.Eric

You can ignore this and it will complete the installation, but subsequently trying to patch with SP2 will fail on the same sections - Hotfix.exe crashes whilst attempting to patch Database Services, Integration Services and Client Components (3 separate crashes).
I've removed SQL Server 2005 elements and tried to re-install, but it's not improved the situation.

We have reports deployed in the Report Server. While connecting from client, we are getting the error
"An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. rsInternal Error)"
Then we went to Report Server, Reporting Service and SQL Server service are all are running fine.
Important thing is some time the reports are working fine, sometimes i am receiving this error. Please help.
We predict whether the services are automatically restarted or transaction logs exceeding the limit or any other parameters to set to avaoid this error?
Please help.

I have the error above, but no error log. I can preview the sub report - but this main report fails after working this morning. This is for internal company reports and I rebuilt this one after converting from access.
I have looked where the error logs should be, but there are no error logs.
I rebuilt the query as I needed to change this, but this did not help.
Is there someone who could point me in the correct direction.
Thanks!

Hi,
I am trying to create a linked server between 2 SQL Server 2005 boxes.
When I create the linked server I specify a login for the connection.
The strange part is that I get the following error when it goes to test the connection:
The test connection to the linked server failed
Login failed for user 'Domainuser'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456)
I can use the SQL mangement studio to conenct to the database using this same login.
The login has all the server roles assigned to it also.
Can anyone shed some light as to what may be the problem?
Thanks,

This has worked fine for weeks, and months.
I'm running Vista Ultimate. SQL 2005 is set as my Default instance, and SQL2000 is set as (local)SQL2000.
Today, actually half way through today, I restarted my computer after installing Photoshop Updates.
Upon getting my computer back up and running, I cannot access SQL2000 from any website on my computer, nor can I access it from SQL2005 Management Stdio. I CAN access it from Enterprise Manager (SQL2000 tool).
Whenever I run an web app that connects to it I get this error:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
Now I usually get these when ASP.NET can't point to the right spot, but in this case I'm pointing exactly where I need to go. Any thoughts?
--Edit
I should also add my password got changed a few days ago on our Domain. This was the first time restarting after the PW change.

I've installed SQL2005 on a server already running SQL2K on my laptop. SQL2K is the default instance, so I'm trying to connect to SQL2005 using MYSERVERSQL2005 as the instance.
The steps that I've taken are to apply SP2 and enable remote connections (TCP & Named pipes). I've also made sure the SQL Server Browser service is running and enabled.
The error message that I get via SQL2005 client tools is "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)"
I dont understand as to why i am unable to connect to 2005.
Any ideas?

I got Form Authentication to work, but I am getting this error sometimes. To reproduce this error consistantly is to run iisreset.exe to have a fresh start. Go to my report server login and open any report.
The page will display: The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error.
If i click "F5" to refresh the page the report will show up or if you go to another report it will work also. It is just the first time after iisreset.exe. It is very strange.

Hi,I need some help. I am getting this error after I complete the asp.net register control and click on the continue button. It crashed when it tries to get it calls this Profile property((string)(this.GetPropertyValue("Address1")));When I look at the stack, it is coming from my ProfileWrapper class which adds user address, city, etc.. from a class which inherits fromSystem.Web.Profile.ProfileBase. From the stack, it is calling the System.Web.Profile and crashed when it tries to open a connection atSystem.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionPool.GetConnection(DbConnection owningObject). I already migrated all aspnet_user, aspnet_roles, etc.. and don't get any connection errors. It is only when I try to get the profile data. Now you all must admit that, if your somewhat new to this databasing, It's a ***.
The source for my application is Visual Web Designer 2005 Express
It is an ASP.Net driven site with membership roles and all the good stuff.
the latest theory is that I need to change the provider config in the web.config file from AspNetSqlProvider
to something else. Most of my complications and frustrations come from GoDaddy and no access to the
shared server (understandibly).
I hope I gave enough info for help and not too much..

I am attempting to install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition onto a Windows XP Pro SP2 machine, but unfortunately each time that I attempt to install I receive an error message in the summary log as follows:
Product : Microsoft SQL Server 2005
Product Version: 9.00.1399.06
Install : Failed
Log File : C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup
Last Action : InstallFinalize
Error String : The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Updating Installed Files.
The error is : Fatal error during installation.
Error Number : 29528
There is probably a simple solution for the issue but unfortunately I am unaware of what it is? I can€™t tell if the issue is specific to registry settings, security, file types, etc€¦ The information below surrounds the error w/in the log, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated?
Thanks, Jennifer

I have 2003 server installed on my machine along with MS SQL Server Management Studio and I am able to connect fine to SQL 2000 Instances. On my laptop running Vista Enterprise, I can not connect to these exact same instances via MS SQL Server Management Studio as I am getting the above error. Does anyone else have this problem? I have no idea what to check for anymore. Thanks in advance.

I recently installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise on a machine running Server 2003. I have successfully configured Reporting Services (see below for summary of settings)
- Used the defaults for the Repor tServer and Report Manager Virtual Directories
- Windows Service Identity set to domain user. The domain user is part of the administrator group on the machine and has sysadmin rights to the database
- Web Service Identity set to NT AuthorityNetworkService
When I open http://localhost/reports/, I get the following error:
I have check a bunch of forums, but have no success. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!!

I have created an RDL file programatically. When I execute the code I get the error as mentioned below:
Error: Sub report cannot be shown.
An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError)
When I copy and paste the code of RDL file into new RDL file and try to preview the output I get correct result.
Note: The new RDL file does not give any error if the output is seen using preview tab but it gives the error only when executed from report viewer or from internet explorer.
Any Suggestion/feedback is highly appreciated.
Thank You.
The code of the sample RDL is shown below:

First-time poster (and very new to ASP.NET, so please be patient) - I am using VS 2005. I have an ASP.Net 2.0 app that is using Forms Authentication and a Login server control with AspNetSqlMembershipProvider. I have an instance of ASPNETDB.MDF in the App_Data directory on my local machine and all works well (or at least as expected). I used the Copy Web Site function to port the app (including the ASPNETDB.MDF files) to my production platform, where I encounter the error mentioned in the subject line. I have found posts (both here and other forums) that mention enabling TCP/IP using Surface Area Configuartion Utility, SQL Server Browser are exempt from firewall, and a few other things. My production machine does not have SQL SVR 2005 installed nor SQL SVR Express. Do I have to install SQL Server Express onto my production platform in order to resolve this, or is there another means (something in SQL Server 2005 Management Studio on my local machine) that will enable me to do this on the production machine? Also, I have been told that it is possible to use a database on another machine as the data store for authentication. Does anyone know how to do that? This would make the first question moot. Thanks in advance!

Ok can somebody please explain to me why only 1/2 my project is getting this error. I am working with SQLExpress on a remote windows 2003 box. The sql server has its service running and the browser is also running. The server has been set to allow remote connections and to accept TCP/IP and Named Pipes. Now, the website uses asp.net membership and roles to allow the users to login, which actually works. So I know that there are no errors in that connection string. However, all the data acess code is compliled as a sepeate class library thats referenced in the bin directory. When calling those methods to beind to a control in code, is where i run into this error. The class library connection string in the app.config file is exactly the same as the connection string in the web.config...i have checked permissions as well, im at a loss to the reason why this is not working....its probably something simple, but im not finding it.
On a seperate note - How do i get the remote database to show up in the server explorer on vs2008, i have tried putting in the ip addressinstance name, and a combo of there items, it will not connect. I have a feeling the two issues are connected. Also fyi, on the remote box, I am able to login with the sql studio express, so im not really sure exactly wuts gong on. Both items are really important and i need to be able to use both of them.
Thanks,
Jeremy

Hello, I have deployed myWebApp on the IIS. All went well now, but the site does not have any connection with the database. I've already done a search on the error 26, which gave me alot of hints about solving the problem.Still I'm gettting this error. I already enabled the remote connections through the sql surface area configuration.Could it have something to do with the fact that I use LINQ? I can't find any connectionstring to modify anywhere ... Help would be appreciated.

I made a simple ASP.NET 2.0 Website that uses memberships, roles, and access to MS SQL Server 2005 database. Everything works fine on my development computer (WinXP Pro). When I deployed this Website on another computer (WinXP Pro) and tried to access the main page from the same computer, I get the error below.
I disabled the Windows Firewall (the only one I use), I ensured that SQL Server Browser is Active and Running, and I changed Remote Connections in SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration to use Local and Remote connections for all the components.
In my Web.Config I used:
<connectionStrings><add name="sqlConnString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|DBdemo.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/></connectionStrings>
Any idea why am I getting the following error?

I have a SProc that runs across many clients without any problems. Every now and then, though, I get the following error:
Internal Query Processor Error: The query processor encountered an unexpected error during execution. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 8630).
All I am doing is populating Temp tables with some data and then joining them together to create a Global Temp table that is being BCP'd to a network share.
Has anyone come across this error in SQL Server 2005? I cannot find anything on Google or Microcsoft.
Thanks,
Robert
