Not Able To Create A DB Diagram In SQL Server 2005. No Menu Option For Creating A DB Diagram??

Apr 23, 2007

I have created a database with several tables. I want to create a database diagram to show the relationshipbetween the tables. Below are the steps from the SQL Server 2005 documentation on how to create a database diagram. The problem is that when I right click on the Database Diagrams folder I am only given two options. They are:"Working with SQL Server diagrams" and "Refresh"There is no menu choice to create a new database diagram. Can anyone tell me what the problem here is?

To create a new database diagramIn Object Explorer, right-click the Database Diagrams folder or any diagram in that folder.
Choose New Database Diagram on the shortcut menu.
The Add Table dialog box appears.
Select the required tables in the Tables list and click Add.
The tables are displayed graphically in the new database diagram.

I believe this has something to do with some unregistered dlls, but i dont know how to solve...

Trying To 'load' A Copy Of A SQLServer 2000 Database To SQLServer 2005 Express

Apr 18, 2008

I am trying to 'load' a copy of a SQLServer 2000 database to SQLServer 2005 Express (on another host). The copy was provided by someone else - it came to me as a MDF file only, no LDF file.

I have tried to Attach the database and it fails with a failure to load the LDF. Is there any way to bypass this issue without the LDF or do I have to have that?

The provider of the database says I can create a new database and just point to the MDF as the data source but I can't seem to find a way to do that? I am using SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Thanks!!

After Restoring MASTER Database, Can't Start SQLServer Service: Configuration Block Version 0 Is Not A Valid Version Number

Jul 16, 2007

Now, I checked and verified that my backup version of SQL Server is the same as the version installed on the computer I'm restoring too.

I have SQL Server on a production machine that I backed up and want to test a full restore on a dev machine to make sure it will work when I need it to.

Now that I've run the restore command on my tape backup and go to restart the SQL server service I receive:

Configuration block version 0 is not a valid version number. SQL Server is exiting. Restore the master database or reinstall.

I'm afraid I don't understand why this is happening. If the builds are the same, then shouldn't restoring the MASTER database have worked normally and I'd be able to restart the service now?

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Some Problem With Creating Diagram In SQL Management Studio.

But, when I made restore from SQL Server 2000 backed up file I get next message:

"Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. To continue, first use the Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER AUTORIZATION statement to set the database owner to a valid login, then add the database diagram support objects."

May someone excplain what exactly I have to do?

1. This particular user has admin permissions of this DB.

2. What does it mean "add the database digram support objects"?

How Do I Start New SQL Server 2005 Database?

Jun 1, 2006

I just installed SQl Server 2005 on my Windows XP Pro system. But I can't figure out how to start the Database Engine. In the MS SQL Server Management Studio I see one Database Engine, but not SQL Servers. If I do "Update Local Server Registration" nothing happens. If I do right-click "New Server Registration" I get a databse icon with a white open circle. If I the try "right-click, Connect, Object Explorer" I get "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server...". All this time the right Summary pane is showing "No Server Connection."

The tutorials are no help and do not function as they describe.

Sample databases install but do not show up in program list as they are supposed to.

How do I start up my SQL Server Database Engine with a new database?

Why do none of the tutorials show you what to do?

Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

SQL 2005 Won't Start After Moving Model Database With Alter DB Command

Sep 11, 2007

I used the code below to move the Model database and Model log file to new SAN drive locations.
After running the commands I stopped the SQL server and moved the physical files to the correct location.
Now I am unable to start SQL server, I get error 17204 Could not open file:Access is denied

I think the problem maybe that for FILENAME new_path I put "J:SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData"
but did not include model.mdf in the file path.

How do I correct the path now that SQL service won't start?
I have included the log file below.

ALTER DATABASE database_name MODIFY FILE ( NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path/os_file_name' )

SqlServer 2005: How *best* To Copy One Database To Another

May 16, 2007

Hi;I thought I would rephrase a question I asked in another post to morequickly get to the heart of the matter. My apologies for anyone whois offended by what appears to be a repetition. My company has two identical web sites. One copy is for our customer, and one copy is for us to test our code changes on.We developed a hard to isolate bug in the copy of the web stie for ourcustomers. We believe the bug might be data related. We would like to replace our test database with our productiondatabase to try to reproduce the problem without interrupting ourservice to our customers. The test database and production database have all the same tables andstructures, but the names of the databases are slightly different. We have tried dropping tables from our test database and importingtables from our customer database in Management Studio. We got thedata but the identity fields were turned off as identities. We canmanually turn them back on in Management Studio, but we have severalhundred tables. In the end we just want to the data from our customer db to be in ourtest db with the test db name being the same, and have our identityfields preserved. What is the easiest way to do this? Thanks in advance for anyinformationSteve

SQLSERVER SERVICE NOT RUNNING ON LOCALHOST! CAN'T START IT!

When I try to give myself administrative rights SQL presents me with the following error message:

When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. This isn't just only a problem with the administrative rights. This happens in many different places such as when I try and add a new data source in VB Express 2005 it gives approximately the same error message.

My MSSQLSERVER service is running nicely but my SQLSERVER isn't and on top of that I can't get it to start!

If anybody can help me out here I would really grateful.

Thanks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK. I fixed that with the help of another thread that was similar except now this message is coming to haunt me:

TITLE: System.Data------------------------------Instance failure.------------------------------BUTTONS:OK------------------------------

I'm purely guessing this is related my SQLSERVER service not running but that is purely a guess. Getting back to the problem I have no clue how to fix it!
