How To Supress/hide/filter Nulls Or Nothing-s?

Dec 26, 2006

I have several columns with expressions that return Nothing under certain conditions:

Example:=(IIF( Fields!solved.Value=False,IIF( Fields!TAT3.Value >120, IIF(Fields!TAT3.Value <144,Fields!Ticket.Value,Nothing),Nothing),Nothing))

As a result, I get tons of white/empty space, because 200 values were evaluated as Nothing and only 5 values/records were actual numbers.

How can I supress this Nothing value ?

Can We Supress The System Error Messages ?

Oct 5, 2001

Hi

Can we supress the System error messages ?

if yes how ?

for ex. In a table I am adding a row which is voilating primary key constarint ..I do not want system message for that ..

Server: Msg 2627, Level 14, State 1, Line 0
Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_b'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'b'.
The statement has been terminated.

I can write a user defined message for this purpose but I am not able to supress system message .

The procedure I am using is

CREATE PROCEDURE add_b
@num int,@empno int, @name varchar(6)
AS
INSERT INTO B (num, empno, ds ) values (@num,@empno,@name)
-- Test the error value.
IF @@ERROR <> 0

BEGIN

-- Return 99 to the calling program to indicate failure.

RAISERROR ('Job id 1 expects the default level of 10.', 16, 1)

PRINT "An error occurred loading the new author information"

RETURN(99)

END

ELSE

BEGIN

-- Return 0 to the calling program to indicate success.

PRINT "The new author information has been loaded"

RETURN(0)

END

Do Not Keep NULLS Using SSIS Bulk Insert Task - Insert Empty Strings Instead Of NULLS

May 15, 2008

I have two SSIS packages that import from the same flat file into the same SQL 2005 table. I have one flat file connection (to a comma delimited file) and one OLE DB connection (to a SQL 2005 Database). Both packages use these same two Connection Managers. The SQL table allows NULL values for all fields. The flat file has "empty values" (i.e., ,"", ) for certain columns.

The first package uses the Data Flow Task with the "Keep nulls" property of the OLE DB Destination Editor unchecked. The columns in the source and destination are identically named thus the mapping is automatically assigned and is mapped based on ordinal position (which is equivalent to the mapping using Bulk Insert). When this task is executed no null values are inserted into the SQL table for the "empty values" from the flat file. Empty string values are inserted instead of NULL.

The second package uses the Bulk Insert Task with the "KeepNulls" property for the task (shown in the Properties pane when the task in selected in the Control Flow window) set to "False". When the task is executed NULL values are inserted into the SQL table for the "empty values" from the flat file.

So using the Data Flow Task " " (i.e., blank) is inserted. Using the Bulk Insert Task NULL is inserted (i.e., nothing is inserted, the field is skipped, the value for the record is omitted).

I want to have the exact same behavior on my data in the Bulk Insert Task as I do with the Data Flow Task.

Using the Bulk Insert Task, what must I do to have the Empty String values inserted into the SQL table where there is an "empty value" in the flat file? Why & how does this occur automatically in the Data Flow Task?

From a SQL Profile Trace comparison of the two methods I do not see where the syntax of the insert command nor the statements for the preceeding captured steps has dictated this change in the behavior of the inserted "" value for the recordset. Please help me understand what is going on here and how to accomplish this using the Bulk Insert Task.

Error Redirection - How To Supress File Creation?

Oct 16, 2007

Hi all!

I´ve having some issues with a package that I´m currently building.
The package is pretty much finished and doing what it´s supposed to,
just doing some testing to ensure everything is in order.

The package is pretty basic:
Read a fixed with text file, do a lookup on destination database table,
conditional split to determine what to insert and what to update, and that´s it!

At the source of my data flow I have the error output set to redirect all rows,
counting those rows, and finally writing them to a dynamically created file.

However, I just now realized that this file seems to be created ALWAYS,
regardless of rows actually being redirected or not. Everytime I run the package
with no rows being passed through the error output, I still end up with a
dynamically named, zero sized text file.

So my question: Is it possible to supress the creation of this file,
or do I have to add a file system component to my control flow,
deleting this file if my number of errorrows = 0 ?

Hope you can help!

Regards
Daniel

Automatic Select Filter (something Like Global Table Filter)

Apr 15, 2008

Hello,

Here is my problem:

I use SQL Server 2005. I have approx. 50 tables in my database and 30 of them have a filed named "CompanyID". Example:
create table A (ID int identity, NAME varchar(100), COMPANYID int)create table A (ID int identity, REF_ID int, FIELD1 varchar(100), FIELD2 varchar(100), COMPANYID int)

Also there are nearly 200 stored procedures that read data from these tables. Example:
create procedure ABCasbegin /* some checks and expressions here ... */ select ... from A inner join B on (A.ID = B.REF_ID) where ... /* ... */end;

All my queries in the Stored procedure does not filter the tables by CompanyID, so they process the entire data.

However, now we have a requirement to separate the data for each company. That means that we have to put a filter by CompanyID to each of those 20 tables in each query where the tables appear.

Firstly, I put the CompanyID in the context so now its value is accessible through the context_info() function. Thus I do not need now to pass it as a parameter to the stored procedures.

However, I don't know what is the easiest and fastest way to filter the tables. Example:

I modified the above mentioned procedure in the following way:
create procedure ABCasbegin /* some checks and expressions here ... */
-- gets the CompanyID from the context: DECLARE @CompanyID int; SELECT @CompanyID = CONVERT(float, CONVERT(varchar(128), context_info()))
select ... from A inner join B on (A.ID = B.REF_ID) where ...
and A.COMPANYID = @CompanyID and B.COMPANYID = @CompanyID /* ... */end;

Now I have the desired filter by CompanyID. However, modifying over 200 stored procedures is rather tedious work and I don't think that this is the best approach. Is there any functionality in SQL Server that can provide the possibility to put an automatic filter to the tables.
For example: when I wrote "SELECT * FROM A", the actual statements to be executed would be "SELECT * FROM A WHERE CompanyID = CONVERT(float, CONVERT(varchar(128), context_info()))".

I was looking for something like "INSTEAD OF SELECT" triggers but I didn't manage to find any answer.

I would very grateful is someone suggests a solution for something like "global table filter" (that will help me make an easy refactoring)?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Beroetz

And/or Filter Field Not Enabled In The Group Filter Tab

Jan 26, 2006

Howdy,

I have a table that has a group. In this group, I want to filter by 2 different expressions, concatenated with an OR. BUT I can't change the "And/Or" column value for the first entry because it is grayed out. The column will automatically change to an OR value if both my expression column fields are the same (which I don€™t want) but if I put any other value in to the expression field of the second row, the "And/Or" field of the first row automatically changes to an AND.

PLEASE! How do I get the And/Or field "ungrayed" so I can change it to what I want?

The 2 filters I and using check the UserID = to the user, and the other is checking a count to get the Top N 1. (So just showing the current user and the top producer)

NULLS And ''

Feb 6, 2007

Hi,I don't have any specific details as I do not really understand whythis is happening but we have a customer database that we have beenusing and queries on text fields have begun returning empty stringvalues instead of NULL.So for example:SELECT TAB1.DESCRIPTIONFROM TABLE1 TAB1WHERE TAB1.DESCRIPTION IS NOT NULLORDER BY 1may have returned 50 records in the past (purely an example). It isnow returning an additional record first that appears just to be ''.Now I am not too sure where to begin looking into this. ODBCconnections, collation settings? I just am not sure where to begin. The column will not have had '' inserted into it; therefore it shouldbe NULL.I have posted this mainly so I can see if anybody else has seen thissort of behaviour - I cannot see why this has suddenly happened. The collation setting on our server is different to that of thecustomer DB, but this shouldn't make a difference should it?If anybody has any ideas then I can post some more information. Thanks,Paul

Are Nulls Bad

Jul 20, 2005

HiI am probably going to regret asking this because I'm sure you are going totell me my design is bad 8-) ah well we all have to learn....anywayI often use Nulls as a marker to see if certain tasks have been completed.A typical example would be a column say invoice_valuewhen new work is entered and a new record is appended, I leave theinvoice_value column as NULL, so if I want a View for uninvoiced work Icheck for the invoice_value being equal to NULL, and alternatively if I wantinvoiced work, I check for not null. I did it this way to save putting inanother column that needed to be set to TRUE or FALSE. (I do similar thingselsewhere aswell)so far everything seems to work OK but reading some old stuff on Google Iget the feeling that NULLS should be left alone, have I done wrong?many thanksAndy

NULLS

Nov 26, 2007

Hello all

I have a colunm - Datatype : nvarchar - Contains: Numeric, characters, strings, date and NULLS

I am getting a the value of each row of this colunm in a variable say @var1

Now I am trying to do some functionalities depending on this variable.

The requirement is if this variable is not null I need to do some stuff.

So I write simple query:

IF (@var1 IS NOT NULL)
BEGIN
......
END

when i am doing this I get an Error:

Error converting data type nvarchar to numeric.

realizing this I change the condition to
IF ( LEN (@Var1) > 1)

then
IF (LEN (@Var1) <> 0)

but no use. I get the same error.

I even use cast
I get the error

Conversion failed when converting the nvarchar value 'null' to data type int.

IF(CAST (@OldValue AS INT)IS NOT NULL)
OR

IF(LEN (CAST (@OldValue AS INT)) <> 0)

Can somebody help in guiding the best practice to do this?
