In SQL Server 2005 Express I currently have 2 databases which I€™m working on, my problem is I want to transfer a table from one of the databases to the other but don't know how to go about achieving this? I want the table structure and all the info held within the table transferred across. Any ideas are welcome.
I got 2 SQL servers. One is legacy SQL 6.5 and the other one is SQL 2005. They are installed in different machine. How can I copy or migrate the old 6.5 version databases to SQL 2005 server?
Someone said I should upgrade the 6.5 to version 2000 first. Is it the only method? I didn't have SQL 2000 install cdrom and license. How can I do that?

A question regarding SQL Server 2005 Express edition. Is it possible to export Access databases into SQL databases without using programming (e.g. using SQL and programming languages)?
I understand you can do this with DTS, but the Express edition seems not have DTS.

I use Visual Studio 2005 Standard. I would like to know the best way that I can create Sql Server 2005 Express databases visually since VS2005 Std. does not allow me to do it.

I'd be interested in knowing how VS doesn't allow you to create a database. What error are you getting?
There are two ways to create databases, depending on your goal:
To just create a database on your server, do the following:
Open the Server Explorer
Right-click on Data Connections
Click Create New SQL Server Database
Specify Server Name and Database Name
Your database will be created and you can start working with it.
Embed a database in your project:
On the Project menu, click Add New Item.
Select SQL Database from the list and give it a name.
Click OK
This will run you thorugh a wizard to create the database.
If your having problems doing either of these, you may not have SQL Server installed on your computer or VS might be pointing to the wrong Instance Name. Check out the Option dialog under Database Tools:ata Connection and verify that the correct instance is specified.

I am trying to figure out the best method for transferring SQL 2005 databases from 2 different physical servers to a new server running windows server 2008 64bit.I own a fully registered copy of Microsoft SQL 2005 32bit Standard Edition. However all of my SQL databases together are only 4GB in size thereby making 2008 SQL Express an option.
Here is the breakdown of the servers:
1) (Old Server1) Windows 2003 Server 32bit - SQL Express 2005 32bit
2) (Old Server2) Windows 2003 Server 32bit - SQL Server 2005 32bit Standard
3) (New Server) Windows 2008 Server 64bit - (Not sure which version to install)
**The objective is to migrate 2 SQL databases from Old Server1 and 1 SQL database from Old Server 2 to the New Server. What version should I install on the new server??? Do I go with 2008 express or install the 2005 Standard Edition?
Pending your response to which version to install, what are the correct steps to migrate (which I have never done before) the databases from both of these servers to the new server? I think this particular situation is unique in that I am transferring from both SQL Express and Standard from 2 different physical servers to a 2008 server that is 64bit.

I have several databases on one MSQL Server which I want to transfer to new server. So, basically it is tranferring all contents of sql server databases on one server to another one. I know I can use import Wizard, but it will take long time, is there a more better way to do this.

When executing an inline insert into command from isqw/w the command executes perfectly. Yet when I try to create a stored procedure with exactly the same insert into statement it will not create. It does not like the database.owner.table prefix on the selected rows. Any suggestions ??

am talking about the DTS Packages with Distributed Transactions enabled.
I need to know that whether this constraint has been rectified with SSIS Packages or it still persists.
One more thing is that while transferring the data, can we view/insert/update source database or it is locked if the transfer is in process.

Hopefully I am posting this question in the correct forum. I am still learning about SQL 2005. Here is my issue. I have an access db that I archive weekly into and SQL server table. I have used the dst wizard to create an import job and initally that worked fine. field I have as the primary key in the access db cannot be the primary key in the sql table since I archive weekly and that primary key field will be imported several time over. I overcame this initally by not having a primary key in the sql table. This table is strictly for reference. However, now I need to setup a unique field for each of the records in the sql table. What I have done so far is create a recordID field in the sql table that is an int and set as yes to Identify (auotnumber). That worked great and created unique id for all existing records. The problem now is on the import. When I try to import the access table i am getting an error because of the extra field in the sql table, and the error is saying cannot import null value into this field. So... my final question is how can I import the access table into the sql table with one extra field which is the autonumber unique field? Thanks a bunch for any asistance.

Does anyone else ever experience this problem, and if so do you know what causes it:
When ever I restore a database called say XXX.mdf, it restores OK and I can view via MSE as XXX.mdf. Then when I visit MSE again there is another database called C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataXXX.mdf - both are linked to the same .mdf file, however if you try to expand XXX.mdf nothing happens as though the database has been detached?

using addTask -> export data.
In MSSQL2005, I am not able to transfer files from one db to other.

I've got about 2 months worth of daily databases created in SQL Express 2005 for a pilot project, which the client is converting to a purchase. Unfortunately they're using SQL Server 2000 and I can't figure out how to migrate the databases to the older version. All my searching turns up how to do it in the expected direction.
Any pointers to how or where to search appreciated.

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.
How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?
Currently, if I run this query:

I get the following:

After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.

I have to transfer data from sql express 2005 to sql mobile(.sdf).
Actually i have a sql server express 2005 (sqlee) in laptop...
and the .sdf (sqlce) handheld device (ppc) that has been connected by activesync.
Can you please make it clear for my following questions?
1. Is it possible to write a query like " insert into ....sdf select from...sqlexp...." between 2 servers...?
2. Is there any copy command like a BULKCOPY .. to insert all records to .sdf (sqlce) from sql server express?
(or)
3. Is it correct to create a smart device application (CF 2.0) to transfer data between sql express and .sdf by using active sync...?

I already copy web site include the app_data into my web hosting, but unfortunately i dont know the connections strings???? when i ask the provider they told me to use the management studio for the databse for connection into their server.
i also noticed if i install the application which use sql server dataabse it can be install the database including the tables and the data, so how is it i want to make my web site including the database be like installer. Using VWD 2005 Express, I can create, manage/modify and SQL 2005 database aswell as maintain any data I enter into it. Fine, no problem there. However, when it comes to doing the same kind of thing with the database using MSSQL 2005 Management Studio Express, I remain mystified!?
Any database I create above, through VWD 2005 Express, shows as being an attached DB in SQL MSExp and I'm able to detach and re-attach them. However, they are always attached as read only files so are unmodifiable!!!
So... What is it I'm missing? What do I have to do to be able detach, attach, re-attach such databases in a modifiable form, ie NOT read-only

Is there a simple way to replicate changes in database tables design without copying the whole mdf-file and loosing the existing data in the target database?

If possible, can you give me an example?If I have to write a tool myself I guess I would do something like this: Export - Query the database for columns and datatype for the requested table. Dynamically generate a query to retrieve all rows from the table and save it to an xml file. Import - Turn off the Identity Increment, loop through the xml file and generate insert queries to insert a clone of each row, turn off the Identity Increment. Viola! I work with many records of data, so populating the data by hand is not an option. I created a test database (ValTest) and a test table within that database (ClaimTest). I created a text file (DataTest.txt) with the same layout as I defined for ClaimTest. I want to populate ClaimTest with the data from DataTest.txt. I was told the only way to do that using SQL Server Express was to use a utility called BCP. So I found a page on the Microsoft website talking about BCP. It gave some examples, so I opended up the Command Line window, pointed to the directory that contains the database and text file and typed "BCP ValTest.ClaimTest in DataTest.txt -T -c". I get 3 errors: Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2], Login timeout expired, and An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
I tried looking around and finding where I could change the settings, in case that was indeed the problem, but was unable to find anything. Does anyone have any suggestions?

But I was able to fix that by renaming my SQLEXPRESS folder in C:Documents and SettingsuserLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server Data. Example:
Staging Table Name: TableA_satge (# of rows - millions)
Main Table Name: TableA_main (# of rows - billions)
Note: Staging table may have some data same as the main table.
Currently I am doing:
- Load data into staging table (TableA_stage)
- Remove any duplication of rows from the staging table (TableA_stage)
- Disable all indexes on main table (TableA_main)
- Insert into main table (TableA_main) from staging table (TableA_stage)
- Remove any duplication of rows from the main table using CTE (TableA_main)
- Rebuild indexes on main_table (TableA_main)
The problem with the above method is that, it takes a lot of time and log file size grows very big.
