How To Update Web And Local Sql Server Databases?
May 6, 2007
I am new to programming in SQL and in VB. I use VWD to create web applications with a Hosted SQL database, locally though the databases are created in SQLExpress through Visual Web Developer.
I have used the SQL Publishing Wizard to upload my local data to the web sql server. But, I'd like to have the same local database as is on the web, which is being updated by users, both data and user / membership data but am not sure how to create an easy, or even programmatical way to update both databases periodically.
Thank you for your help.

I had both SQL server 2000 & 2005 on my machine. I recently un-installed 2000 for some reason, and now the SQL 2005 does not show local databases. It cannot update local server information or it doesnt let me local as a new server. How do i go about installing local databases in this situation?
Thanks

Hello everyone.
I'm currently trying to figure out a good way to keep my Local and Remote Databases in sync. Whenever I make changes to one or the other I spend a lot of time manually adjusting the other to match. I want to be able to set up an update page that accesses my Remote database and Local database and Updates the two accordingly.
I really don't know where to start with this one. I'm not sure at all as to how to simultaneously connect to two different databases, on two different servers, and Udate from one another. Does anyone know any good articles to get me started?
Thanks ahead for your replies.

Currently our database size is around 350G. It will grow up to 1.5 TB
We have the
Auto create statistics option :True,
auto update statistics option :True,
auto update statistics asynchronously option : False
at database level
we have a weekly job, update statistics running very long time. It is created through maintenance plan using the option full scan.
Previously they tested with sampling but instead of full scan running with the sampling effected the queries.
Is there option to avoid the long time job duration.
If we didn't run the statistics manually what will happen? How do you maintain statistics with large databases

Hi all,
I would be very glad if someone can suggest me what techniques I should use in the following scenario:
I have 2 SQL Server databases : DB1 and DB2. DB 1 is on a remote server (hosting server) and DB 2 is on a local server.
Some tables of each db contain tables that are polulated and changed by the appropriate application, i.e.:
DB1.users, DB1.orders,... etc are managed by "webapplication"
DB1.products ... are not managed by "webapplication" : in fact only used to read from
DB2.products, DB2.customers, .... etc are managed by "winapplication"
DB2.orders,....are partially managed by "winapplication"
Since the amount of data can go over 100000 records i'm wondering what would by the best approach to :
- synchronize the data of DB1.products and DB2.products in DB1 on remote server (updated newly added rows and update changed rows,....)
- the products data is only (at the moment) added, edited and deleted on the local server
I think SQLBulkCopy will not do the job. Should it be possible with some query? Or...?
Any suggestions are appreciated!!
O.

Hi all,
Criteria:
We connect to the remote database servers through the network from loca by using Query Analyzer.
Previously we were able to execute the xp_cmdshell command from local Query Analyzer to fetch the remote databases data.
But now we are unable to execute the xp_cmdshell command on remote databases from local Query Analyzer
We do not know what happened but i think due to network updates this command is not able to execute...
For ex:
Previously i was able to execute master..xp_cmdshell 'net start' from local Query Analyzer. But now not able to execute
Now my question is, is there any other way(Directly or indirectly) to execute the xp_cmdshell command on remote databases from local?
Note : we are able to execute this command on remote Query Analyzer but not from local QA
Any suggestions would be very very helpful to me?
Thanks in advance,

We have recently migrated quite a databases around 20 from SQL 2000 and 2005 to SQL server 2008R2.
I am using Ola's script for index maintenance for those with compatibility level above 80 as i heard it supports that way.
Hence separated in 2 way job where for those with compatibility level 80, we are running job with below query on each database with 80 as compared
USE ABC
GO
EXEC sp_MSforeachtable @command1="print '?' DBCC DBREINDEX ('?', ' ', 80)"
GO
EXEC sp_updatestats
GO
I am not sure if this is the only way in for those databases, because we are seeing the database getting because of that somewhere using above query.( seems log file filling very rapidly).
But above is not the case with those databases , with compatibility 90 and above.

Hi, I have compact sql databases which will be local on multiple users
devices. Due to space constraints, for one of the tables i have had to use
auto incrementing integer which works fine for the local database but i
would like to merge all of the users databases into a global database. The
table format can be seen below:
Code SnippetCREATE TABLE Players
(
ID UNIQUEIDENTIFIER NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
FirstName NVARCHAR(32),
LastName NVARCHAR(32)
);
CREATE TABLE Sessions
(
ID INTEGER NOT NULL IDENTITY,
PlayerID UNIQUEIDENTIFIER ,
SessionDateTime DATETIME,
CONSTRAINT pkSessions PRIMARY KEY (ID),
CONSTRAINT fkPlayerID FOREIGN KEY (PlayerID) REFERENCES Players(ID)
);
CREATE TABLE SessionDetail
(
SessionID INTEGER,
Time real,
Power real,
CONSTRAINT pkSessionDetail PRIMARY KEY (SessionID,StrokeTime),
CONSTRAINT fkSessionID FOREIGN KEY (SessionID) REFERENCES Sessions(ID)
);
The Players table will merge fine as GUIDs are used. However, how will the
sync capabilities of compact SQL handle the sessions table? When it pushes
the local data to the remote database will it change the Sessions.ID column
to a unique field (as no doubt lots of people will have 1, 2, 3 in their
local databases and the global database must have a unique ID), and then
transfer this changed ID back to the local database? Furthermore, if it
changes the Sessions.ID column during the merge it will also need to update
the SessionDetail.SessionID foreign key to maintain referential integrity,
is this also handled?
So my question is, how much of this sync and data merge is automated and are
there any good examples or pointers for my scenario? I cannot reasonably use
a GUID for Session.ID as there will be lots of SessionDetail entries and the
size would be far too much.
Many thanks,
Chris

We have a 64-bit VM server running SQL Server 2005. The SQL Server on this particular VM server has 6 local instances installed. On the Management Studio logon screen I can type the full name of the local instance and connect to it, however if I press the drop down in the Server name field, choose Browse and select the Local Servers tab there is nothing listed under Database Engines.
Any idea why the 6 local instances don't show up under Database Engines? This is preventing me from installing a vendor application because their installer looks for local SQL Server instances on this server, but if SQL Server won't even show the local instances then the installer doesn't see them either.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Craig

Hi,
I develop ASP.NET applications and use MS SQL 2000 Enterprise.
Each customer has one database and one custom design application. And, there is a gateway and a central database to get data from all databases.
Supposed there are 10 DBs. I want the data in those 10 databases updating to the central database directly.
So, the gateway can gather all data of 10 DBs from a central DB.
Now, my question is how should I do it in MS SQL 2000? Can I do it with a stored procedure (SP)? If so, how does the SP like?
Or, SP can only perform on it's own DB, but not execute across DBs? If so, how can I do that?
Thanks for advice

Being a very novice SQL Server administrator, I need to ask the experts a question.
How do I go about moving a database from 1 drive to another? The source drive (C is local to the server, but the target drive (E is on a Storage Area Network (SAN), although it is still a local drive for the server. I want to move the database from C: to E:. Can someone provide me with instructions?

Hiya!
I'm developing an app. using SQL Server 7 (as the back end) for a company supporting approx. 200 unrelated clients, all in different locations. There is no LAN or WAN connection between them, so we'd probably need to use TCP/IP. The problem is as follows: We have dynamic reports in our app. which are run based on data in two tables. Whenever we add a new report we'd like to send it to all of our clients i.e. update their tables to reflect the additional rows of new report info. How would this best be handled, by DTS or Replication or BCP? And how could it be done with either?
Thanks,
Sarah

I have 50 MSDE SQL2k servers, each server has around 10 customer databases.
There are 5 stored procecures need to update to 50*10 = 500 databases.
These 5 stored procedures each has many 'Go' keywords and 4 of 5 with more than 8000 characters.
What might be the best way to loop execute them automatically, instead of
isql/w to each database connection to run the script?
I had bumpped by 'Go' keywords error and limitation of max varchar of 8000 error.
thanks for the help

we have a new requirement that calls for also (in addition to RS's automatic directory updates) updating an organizational application database with metatdata about instances of scheduled reports, or alternatively having our app query RS's metadata for such info.
So, let's say we have a report called Sales Detail, and it runs at 8am every day of the week for client A thru the scheduling mechanism that comes with RS. Each time it runs to completion, an entry would have to be made in our organizational database representing a new run (instance) of the report under the client for whom it was run, in this case A.
Forgetting for the moment potential issues with a reporting system interfering with the transactional, or vice versa, can datasets in RS also do updates?...or can the scheduling mechanism in RS be extended to also log info to other places?...or is the metadata kept by RS (about instances of reports) easy to get to and decipher, and possibly be extended to record for which client this particular instance was run?

I would like to write a query that will join two tables in separate databases (same server). Then update a field in one table using data and criteria from the other.
Its easy to do this in Microsoft Access by linking the tables using ODBC, but I found its not so simple to do directly in SQL Server
Thanks.

linked servers are not an option, as I want the SSIS package to be portable and not dependent on server environments.

Hi Everyone
I am at the stage of architecting my solution
My goal is to develop the system on a windows application and pda
There is a central server which will create a publication called inventory
The laptops which host the windows application will be subscribers to the central server using merge replication
The client now wants the PDA using SQL Mobile to synchronize with the local subscirber database on the laptop using active sync. They dont want to do it via WIFI to the IIS Server at the central server
I have been reading for days and I am still unsure whether this is possible to do.
I know Appforge provide a conduit for palm to access synchronization but not local sql databases
I would appreciate your help immensley

Hi All, first post.
I have done a bit of searching around and cant find a clear answer to this question.
Current Setup
Desktop application (c#) that connects to a SQL Server 2005 express database on the same local network as the application (currently 3 users)
It is only a very small company and has just taken on their first remote worker, but expects to take on another 6-8 over the next few months. They have asked for the database to be moved online.
The application was written in such a way that everything has been done using no stored procs, or views, it is all native SQL.
This will be my first DB hosted online and before I go ahead and do anything I just wanted to make sure what I have to do is correct, sorry if this is a very basic question, although I have been programming for a long time, I have never had the chance to do any online databases before.
Will this work.
1.Find a SQL Server 2005 Hosting company.
2.Move the database to the server.
3.Setup the users permissions.
3.Alter the connection string in the application to point to the new location.
So the only thing that would change would be a new connection string in the application preferences?
Or am I living in a dream world, because nothing is ever that simple.
One thing I am worried about is the security/visiblity of the database and data as it travels from the server to the client and back.
Thanks for any advise you can give.

I'm a web developer who writes transact-SQL to make my web applications run properly. I'm not real strong in other areas of SQL. Let me explain our set-up and then I'll explain what I want to do:
We have an ecommerce web site and all sales are saved in a SQL Server 2008 R2 database at our hosting company. We also have a local Windows 2012 network that has SQL Server 2014 Express installed.
Here is what I want to do:
I want to copy sales rows from the SQL Server 2008 database at our hosting company and save them in the SQL Server 2014 Express database on our local Windows 2012 server. I'd like to automate this if possible so that it happens each night perhaps. I know there is a way to schedule SQL jobs but I've never actually done this. I also would need to know how to attach to our hosting company DB as well as our local network DB.

Hello,
I just installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition from my company's DVD. It was installed with the setting of using both Integrated windows authenitication as well as basic named authenication. I installed all the options too: Database Engine, Analysis Services, Reporting Services, SQL Server compact edition, and Integration Services. When I look at services there are: SQL Server Integration Services, SQL Server Analysis Services, SQL Server Reporting Services, and SQL Server Browser. All of which are running. Something that took me offguard was the installation did not ask me to provide an SA password. Other than that, the install looked like it went good.
I was able to connect to the local instance of the SQL Server 2005 using the SQL Server Management Studio. I could connect with SA, or connect with Integrated Windows Authenication. Whoohoo. Off and running! As a matter of fact, for the SA account I could use any password and it would still log me in.
First thing I did was I went in to the copy wizard to attempt to copy a database from a server on our network to my local box. First it asked me for the remote server. Then when I specified my local instance in the wizard, the wizard complained that my local instance was NOT SQL Server 2005. Doh! This I didn't understand. I figured maybe I need to check for MS updates. Sure enough, I found that ther was a SP2 and then a hot-fix for that SP2. I applied both. Now I cannot connect from SQL Server Management studio to my local instance of SQL Server 2005 database server. I get the following error:
"An error occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)"
However, I went in to see what other services I could connect to, and here's the results:
Analysis Services : OK!
Reporting Services (Windows Auth/Basic/Forms) : NG "The reporting Services Instance could not be found (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient)"
SQL Server Compact Edition : NG "The database cannot be found. Check the path to the database. [ File Name = CCG092 ] (SQL Server Compact Edition ADO.NET Data Provider)
Integration Services : OK!
I can connect to other SQL Server databases on our network. However, just not my local one. No one on the network can connect to me either.
I even turned off my windows firewall and still no luck connecting to my own.
So something really went wrong when I applied SP2, however, admittedly from the error message when I tried to use the copy wizard, something was probably already wrong.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Can't connect to local server instance MSSQLSERVER in SQL Server Management Studio (SQL2005 sp2/Vista).
SQL Server Configuration Manager reports SQL Server2005 services: SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) Running. This would indicate the name of the SQL server is "MSSQLSERVER" correct? I chose "default" instance during the install and that is the name it gave itself.
I tried connecting to the server using the following for the Server Name: MSSQLSERVER and .MSSQLSERVER neither works.
The only thing that works for my installation is just plain "." (no quotes) and nothing else. Can this be correct because I can't find any reference to this. Thanks.
