Hello,I have been searching and reading a lots of information on the microsoft website about the different version of SQL server, but still can not make my decision. In term of performance, is there a real big difference between the workgroup and the standard version? The workgroup is limited to 3 GB of RAM while the standard is unlimited, would that really change the performance if my server has 16Gb or RAM?The price difference is pretty substantial so if could only have to buy the workgroup , it would be better. One more question, regarding the type of licence, my server has 2 processors, could I avoid buying 2 licences and get the Server plus CAL instead. I am using this server to host 4 web-application running on SQL server. Each database is about 15 MB.Thanks in adavance for your advises.Arno

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.
How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?
Currently, if I run this query:
SELECT @@version
I get the following:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)
After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.
Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/
Thank you,
Bashman

Hi All,
A client of mine was using SQL Express and soon realised this doesn't meet his needs performance or database size wise. He also realised that SQL Server 2005 Workgroup came free with his R2 version of SBS.
So in essence, I have been trying to find the Microsoft recommended way to upgrade from Express to Workgroup. I have not been able to find a step-by-step guide and to add to my confusion, when I run the work-group installer it tells me to run the installer with a switch which I have gone ahead and done but when selecting components it has all of them defaulted to blanked out.
Surely the process for an in-place upgrade should not be so technical as I am finding it ? To my mind, the natural progression would be to upgrade express to a better capable version of 2005 and should be as easy as pie.
Anyway, I am basically looking for a step-by-step guide on how to upgrade to get it done right the first time as opposed to upgrading and than realised some remenants of Express are still larking about causing trouble.
Regards,
QS

I have installed SBS 2003 Premium with Exchange 2003 SP1 and now I want to install SQL server 2005 workgroup edition.
Heres what I noticed during setup, following the steps of the Server 2005 Workgroup Edition instructions, starting with Upgrading the Sharepoint instance of WMSDE.
Preparing the http://companyweb website:
Step 4. I should make a backup of the data directory within program filesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL$SHAREPOINT directory. However there is no data-directory there, so nothing to backup there. This is probably the reason for all the rest of the issues, however what does it mean, why is there no such directory present? I checked before doing the sql install that by going to http://companyweb I did indeed land on the sharepoint internal website.
Rest goes all normal, until :
Attaching the databasefiles to the new SHAREPOINT instance of SQL server 2005.
Step 4.: go to MSSQL$SHAREPOINTdata. Not only is there no such subdirectory now, the whole MSSQL$SHAREPOINT directory has in fact now disappeared. So steps 4 till 6 cannot be performed now.
Then further to
Enable full text search in Windows Sharepoint services
Step 2. Remark: I get the error message as described there, however the solution would be to start the SQL server (Shareoint service. However that service is up and running
Furthermore when I go to http://companyweb now, I also get the errormessage indicating no connection can be established with the configuration database.
When I check for services, I find that the whole MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service has disappeared from the list of services.

hello,
i have no idea what i am doing here and could use some help from someone who knows what they are doing.
i have a proliant ml350 g3 server running windows 2003 server with sql express 2005 software.
all the databases are running in compatibility sql 7 mode.
I would like them to be in sql 2005 mode if possible. Is there a way to upgrade the databases in the process?
here's a plan I came up with:
take sql workgroup 2005 edition evaluation, install it on a machine.
Mount all databases on the machine.
Wipe out the sql express 2005 machine, reinstall workgroup edition on the new server.
but here is my question
is there a way to migrate the data from the workgroup edition over to the new server through a DTS copy process, and if so, will it create a new version of the databases with the proper collation or the proper english?
please let me know. if this works, i will be thrilled!

Hi
I have a PC running the 64 bit version of vista home premium (will be soon upgrading to ultimate).
On the download page http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-au/express/bb410792.aspx for SQL Server Express under the section entitled SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 it mentions at the bottom of the page (referred by * & **) that there is a 64 bit install version available for both SQL Server & management Studio.
However, under the section entitled SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2, there is no * or **. As far as I can tell, the Advanced services has Reporting Services as well.
So, what I am wondering is, can I specifically download the 64 bit versions of SQL server express & management studio and as well, download just the reporting services part of Advanced Services?
Kind regards
Ross

Our new version of a VB.net 2005 program uses
Install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition
While upgrading a client over PCAnywhere in another state, I inadvertantly installed
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services
I have had an absolute nightmare with SQL 2005 uninstalling it from a laptop on my desk, so you can understand why I don't want to try uninstalling the Advanced Services version on a computer over PCAnywhere.
However, the remote computer does not have IIS on it, which prompts a warning form Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services.
So, the simple question is, if the program works Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition then I assume it will work with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services, since it doesn't use any advance services.
Please advise.
Bob

How do SQL 2000 service packs play a role in upgrading? That is, can SQL 2000 Standard with no Service Packs(SP) be upgraded to SQL 2005 Standard, or does SQL 2000 Standard have to have a certain service pack(SP).
What about re-applying SQL 2005 service packs when upgrading Express SP1 to Workgroup, etc.?

SQL Server 2005 full version is installed on a server computer. I installed MS VS 2005 Express edition on the server. As VS 2005 Express edition can only access to SQL Server 2005 Express edition, so a SQL Server 2005 Express edition has to be installed on the server. I wonder if both SQL Server 2005 full version and Express edition can be installed in the same computer.
Thanks,
Yabing

Hello,
at the moment I have the following problem:
We have installed a version of the MSDE 2000 Sp3 with our software since 2005. Now we install SQL Server Express 2005 in order to use the latest version and to be compatible with Vista.
We have never had any problems with the MSDE, so it was no problem that we installed the german version (by mistake) because there never was any output at installation time.
When we now upgrade the existing MSDE installing the new version of our software, there are often problems and there are error messages, unfortunately in german, which cannot be read by most of our international users.
The problem is, that there seems to be no possibility to upgrade the existing (german) MSDE with the english version of SQL Server Express 2005.
My question is, if it is possible to upgrade the german MSDE to the english SQL Server 2005 to enable our international users to read the error messages at installation time in english?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
Peter

I checked at the control pane and they both show up as SQL server 2005. The directory structure at Program Files looks the same.

Hi all,
Yesterday, I just downloaded the SQL Server 2005 Express (SQLEXPR.EXE) and tried to install it in my Windows XP Pro PC that is on Microsoft NT 4 LAN System. I got the following error: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CTP setup The Microfost .NET Framework 2.0 is not installed. Please install before running setup.
This morning, I downloaded the NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package Beta 2 (x86) from the Microsoft Download Center and installed it in my Windows XP Pro PC. Then I tried to install the SQL Server 2005 Express (SQLEXPR.EXE) again. This time I got a new error: SQL Server 2005 Setup has detected incompatible components from beta versions of Visual Studio, .NET Framework, or SQL Server 2005. Use ADD or Remove Programs to remove these components, and then run SQL Server 2005 Setup again.
I am confused and lost in this installation problem. Was the .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package Beta 2 (x86) a wrong Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 I downloaded and installed in my PC? Where is the right Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 for the SQL Server 2005 Express? Please help and advise.
Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

Hey Guys,
I have written some code that executes a DTS package from a COM object. It works great on my staging server which is MSSQL 2000 Standard Edition. I just got a new live server which has MSSQL Server 2000 Workgroup Edition. Now I recieve an error message when trying to execute the DTS package from the COM object. Is this perhaps something that is not supported with the Workgroup edition? Is there anyway to varify for sure because as you all know it would cost me a good amount of money to upgrade.
Thanks in advance!

Hello -- Please excuse my extreme newbieness -- trying to get up to speed fast on SQL Server Express for work. I've been able to set up the software, create a database, and access it with no problems on my local computer, but I need to make the database available to other computers in my workgroup. I followed instructions -- enabled TCP/IP and Named Pipes and turned on SQL Server Browser, and I was actually able to manipulate one system database (the "master" database) from another computer but not any other databases, not even the other system databases. I can connect to any of the databases with the SQLCMD commands, but if I try to do any SELECT commands (other than in "master") I get an error: "SELECT permission denied on object '[MyTable]', database '[MyDatabase]', schema 'dbo'". I was only able to get into "master" after adding "guest" as a user, but adding this user to the other databases has no effect. One interesting thing: When I used the sp_table_privileges command on each database, all but "master" showed all privileges being granted to and from "dbo", but "master" didn't show anything being granted to or from anybody. Does anyone know what could be going on here? Am I missing something obvious? Thanks for any and all help!

Hi all,
Since some analysis services features are only available in Enterprise version , I have to upgrade my SQL 2005 server from standard edition to enterpise edition.
So I uninstall originial standard version of analysis service and install a Enterprise version. However, the analysis service is still a standard version after installation.
Is it possible to keep data engine as standard version and install a enterprise version of analysis service?
Thank you very much

I am using Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition & SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
In a database that is role-manager-enabled, you will have some tables like apsnet_Users, aspnet_Roles, etc.
And some Columns like CreatedDate, LastLoginDate in the tables.
My problem:
The datatime values in the aforementioned fields are updated based on GMT instead of the client's local time zone.
Is this the way it is?
No matter true or not, how to fix it?
Many Thanks in advance :)

We have a 64bit os machine that we accidently loaded the 32 bit version of sql server on. We now want to upgrade it to 64 bit sql server, but we now have a production database on it. My understanding is that all I have to do is detach the production database, upgrade to 64bit sql server, then reattach the database. Is this really all I have to do?

Good day,
We have developed an application using VS 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition.
Currently, our client is asking if they could buy the SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition.
Is it ok? I'm afraid that the SP we made using CLR and any other functionality might not work.
We are suggesting our client to use the SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition instead. But for them to save money, can they use the Workgroup Edition instead?
I would really appreciate your help.
Thanks and more power,
Arthur

Here is the situation:
I have SQL server express 2005 installed on my pc as instance SQLEXPRESS.
I have created a Visual Basic applicaion with the following as connection to the SQL server express 2005 running on the same PC:
****************************************************************************************************
Dim lconnectionString As String Dim builder As New SqlConnectionStringBuilder Dim cmd As New SqlCommand Dim reader As SqlDataReader Dim parameter As SqlParameter builder("Data Source") = ".SQLEXPRESS" builder("Initial Catalog") = "" builder("AttachDbFilename") = "C:My DocumentsVisual Studio 2005Projectsabcabcabc.mdf" builder("Integrated Security") = True builder("User Instance") = True lconnectionString = builder.ConnectionString Dim sqlConnection1 As New SqlConnection(lconnectionString) cmd.CommandText = "SP_add_collection" cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure cmd.Connection = sqlConnection1 sqlConnection1.Open()
*******************************************************************************************************************
It seems that i can not connect to the abc.mdf in SSMSE while the VB program is running. (ERROR:
Database 'C:My DocumentsVisual Studio 2005Projectsabcabcabc.mdf' cannot be opened due to inaccessible files or insufficient memory or disk space. See the SQL Server errorlog for details. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) )
If i connect to the abc.mdf first in SSMSE, then run the VB program afterwards, it gives me the error on this line -- sqlConnection1.Open()
I want to be able to access the abc.mdf database with both SSMSE and VB at the same time. Could anyone help me on this ?
Thanks very much !

Hi
I've recently gone through installing and setting up merge replication on Server 2005 Standard. All working.
I am now setting up a different box with SQL 2005 Workgroup with SP2. When I go to the Replication tab in Management Studio there is only Local Subscriptions - No Local Publications.
I've re-run the installation but I can't see how Publications is not getting installed orwhy it is missing.
Any ideas much appreciated.
Thanks

can't alter data other than through a VB application)?
