How To Use Parameterized Queries With IN Clause
Feb 5, 2008
Hi,
I need to use parameters with the IN clause in a SQL statement like:
select * from tableX where field IN (1,2,3,4)
I don't know how to do that.
I'm using SQLServer and OleDB.
Thanks for your help.

HelloWhen I use a PreparedStatement (in jdbc) with the following query:SELECT store_groups_idFROM store_groupsWHERE store_groups_id IS NOT NULLAND type = ?ORDER BY group_nameIt takes a significantly longer time to run (the time it takes forexecuteQuery() to return ) than if I useSELECT store_groups_idFROM store_groupsWHERE store_groups_id IS NOT NULLAND type = 'M'ORDER BY group_nameAfter tracing the problem down, it appears that this is not preciselya java issue, but rather has to do with the underlying cost of runningparameterized queries.When I open up MS Enterprise Manager and type the same query in - italso takes far longer for the parameterized query to run when I usethe version of the query with bind (?) parameters.This only happens when the table in question is large - I am seeingthis behaviour for a table with > 1,000,000 records. It doesn't makesense to me why a parameterized query would run SLOWER than acompletely ad-hoc query when it is supposed to be more efficient.Furthermore, if one were to say that the reason for this behaviour isthat the query is first getting compliled and then the parameters aregetting sent over - thus resulting in a longer percieved executiontime - I would respond that if this were the case then A) it shouldn'tbe any different if it were run against a large or small table B) thisperformance hit should only be experienced the first time that thequery is run C) the performance hit should only be 2x the time for thenon-parameterized query takes to run - the difference in response timeis more like 4-10 times the time it takes for the non parameterizedversion to run!!!Is this a sql-server specific problem or something that would pertainto other databases as well? I there something about the coorect use ofbind parameters that I overall don't understand?If I can provide some hints in Java then this would be great..otherwise, do I need to turn/off certain settings on the databaseitself?If nothing else works, I will have to either find or write a wrapperaround the Statement object that acts like a prepared statement but inreality sends regular Statement objects to the JDBC driver. I wouldthen put some inteligence in the database layer for deciding whetherto use this special -hack- object or a regular prepared statementdepending on the expected overhead. (Obviously this logic would onlybe written in once place.. etc.. IoC.. ) HOWEVER, I would desperatelywant to avoid doing this.Please help :)

Just getting started using SSce and having a few problems
What I want to do is something like this...
Dim Code As Integer
Dim Description As String = txtDescription.Text.Trim
Dim conn As SqlCeConnection = ConnectToLocalDatabase()
Dim ssql As New System.Text.StringBuilder
ssql.AppendLine("INSERT INTO T_Titles (Description)")
ssql.AppendLine("VALUES(@Description)")
ssql.AppendLine("SELECT @Code = @@IDENTITY")
Dim cmd As New SqlCeCommand(ssql.ToString, conn)
Dim sqlCode As New SqlCeParameter("@Code", 0)
sqlCode.Direction = ParameterDirection.InputOutput
cmd.Parameters.Add(sqlCode)
cmd.Parameters.Add(New SqlCeParameter("@Description", Description))
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
Code = CInt(sqlCode.Value)
**********************************************************************
The above code doesnt work. Firstly I am not sure if I can execute the two statements in one go. Secondly, I am not sure if output parameters are supported.
I have been working with SQL Server since 6.5 but have always used sprocs and am feeling a little lost here without them. Any help getting started would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hello,I have an add stored procedure in Yukon (would work in 2000 too), where I select the ID from the table to make sure that it doesn't already have the data. So it looks like:create procedure ....set transaction isolation level serializablebegin transactiondeclare @ID intselect @ID = rowid from tblBusinessInformation where Name = @Name and Rules = @Rulesif ( @ID is NULL ) begin insert into tblBusinessInformation (..) values (@Name, @Rules) endcommit transactionThe problem is the values could be:Name RulesNULL 'Test''Test' NULL'Test' 'Test'When one of the values was NULL, it would never select the ID, unless I changed it to "where Name is @Name", and then it worked, because where Name is NULL, which is correct in SQL; so how do I allow for both; I can use the CLR, but would like to avoid rewriting the proc if possible, and I thought that was to work...Thanks.

Is that possible?I'd like to end up with something like this:CREATE PROCEDUREMyNewProc@prmSchoolYear2 char(11)ASSELECTContactID, SomeOtherFieldsFROMtblContactWHEREContactID IN (exec EWF_spCustom_AddProfiles_CompanyYear@prmSchoolYear2)How would I make that happen?If this isn't possible, what else might I try?Thanks much for any pointers.JeremyPS: I accidentally crossposted this in another group(http://tinyurl.com/gksq4) thinking it was this one. Hey fellas. Here's my situation. I have two textboxes where the user enters a "start" date and an "end" date. I want to search a table to find records who's "expired" column date is between those two dates provided by the user. The tricky part is, if the user just puts a start date in but no end date, I want it to search from whatever start date the user entered to the future and beyond. Essentially, I think I'm looking for a SQL statement along the lines of:
SELECT Request.RequestID, Request.URL, ActionProvider.Name, Request.CurrentStageID, Request.Decision, Request.SubmissionDate,
Request.ExpirationDate
FROM Request INNER JOIN
RequestSpecificActionProvider ON Request.RequestID = RequestSpecificActionProvider.RequestID INNER JOIN
ActionProvider ON RequestSpecificActionProvider.ActionProviderID = ActionProvider.ActionProviderID INNER JOIN
RoleActionProvider ON ActionProvider.ActionProviderID = RoleActionProvider.ActionProviderID INNER JOIN
Role ON RoleActionProvider.RoleID = Role.RoleID
WHERE
CASE WHEN @BeginDate is not null AND @BeginDate <> ''
THEN Request.ExpirationDate > @BeginDate
END
AND
CASE WHEN @EndDate is not null AND @EndDate <> ''
THEN Request.ExpirationDate > @EndDate
END
AND (Role.Description = 'Requestor')
I realize my code isn't correct and there's still a floating "AND" out there I would have to put some logic around. Anyway, how do I do this? Do I need to build three separate queries in my tableadapter (one for if both dates are provided, one for if start date is provided, one for if end date is provided) and build the logic in my application code or can I tackle it with SQL? If I can tackle it with SQL, where have I gone astray? I'm currently getting the error: "Error in WHERE clause near '>'. Unable to parse query text."
Thanks for the help everyone!

How would I debug such a query.
I have a sqlCommand to which I add several parameters for an insert statement.
if the statement fails, for some reason, I would like to copy the final sql with all values inserted as text and use this in e.g. TOAD to see where the error is coming from. Is this possible?

I want to export an SQL Server table to an Excel Spreadsheet driven by a web interface.
I am using Cold Fusion to call a SQL Server Stored procedure. The SP accepts a variable (IDlist) from the web page and sets this to a Global Variable.
EXEC @hr = sp_OASetProperty @oPKG, 'GlobalVariables("outIDlist").Value', @outIDlist
The SP then executes a DTS package to export to Excel. The DTS package uses the Global variable in the SQL Query thus:
SELECT ...
FROM ...
WHERE tblPropertyRegister.IDProperty IN (?);
This works fine when I pass one single ID (@outIDlist = "20") into the stored procedure.
But it returns no records when I pass multiple IDs (@outIDlist = "19, 20, 21") into the stored procedure. It works fine also if I "hard code" the IDlist into the DTS query (eg WHERE tblPropertyRegister.IDProperty IN (19, 20, 21);).
The problem appears to be in the setting of the global variable in the stored procedure.
Has anyone had any experience with this? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. TIA
Alan

Hi,
I am trying to build a parameterized query where I pass a set of integer values into the dynamic sql. Please see below example.
DECLARE @SQLQUERY NVARCHAR(4000)
DECLARE @PARAMDEF NVARCHAR(1000)
DECLARE @VALUES VARCHAR(100)
SET @PARAMDEF = N'@IN_VAL VARCHAR(100)'
SET @VALUES = '1,2,3,4'
SET @SQLQUERY = 'SELECT * FROM TABLEA WHERE COLUMNA IN (@IN_VAL)'
EXEC SP_EXECUTESQL @SQLQUERY,@PARAMDEF,@IN_VAL=@VALUES
This fails with the error "cannot convert varchar to numeric". I believe since ColumnA is numeric, its trying to convert the dynamic paramter to numeric leading to the failure.
has someone implemented an In clause as a parameter? Please do not tell me that I can append the values as string and construct a dynamic query. I want to use a parameterized version. I will be calling this repeatedly and dont want recompile overhead.
TIA

CREATE PROCEDURE sp_PRO
@cat_num nvarchar (10) ,
@descr nvarchar (200) ,
@price DECIMAL(12,2) ,
@products_ID bigint
AS
insert into product_items (cat_num, descr, price, products_ID) values (@cat_num, @descr, @price, @products_ID)
when I try and insert something like sp_PRO '123154', 'it's good', '23.23', 1
I can't insert "'" and "," because that is specific to how each item is delimited inorder to insert into the stored procedure. But if I hard code this into a aspx page and don't create a stored procedure I can insert "'" and ",". I have a scenario where I have to use a stored procedure...confused.

I have an application where users can enter data into any (or all) of 6 search fields,
to produce a filtered query.
This works fine using my Access version(see code below),
but as SQLS2k cannot use "IIF", I tried to replace these bits with
"CASE/WHEN/THEN/ELSE" lines, which does not work with numeric fields
as these cannot be "wild-carded" in the same way as Access allows.
Can anyone suggest a way forward that does not involve coding all the
possible permutations of "SELECT" blocks driven by lots of nested "IF/THEN/ELSE"s?
Hoping you can help

I've setup a parameterised query in PHP correctly and achieved the results I wanted from a basic view.
I then developed the application to use a Table-valued Function to be able to simplify the PHP code.
SELECT * FROM [CDBF].[dbo].[webOrganisation] ('w%',5,11)
This query works fine within the code.
/* Define the query. */
$tsql = "SELECT * FROM webOrganisation ('w%',5,11)";
/* Execute the query. */
$stmt = sqlsrv_query( $connection, $tsql);
if ( ! $stmt )
{
echo "Error in statement 2 execution in display_search().";
die( print_r( sqlsrv_errors(), true));
}
/* Iterate through the resultset printing a row of data upon each iteration.*/
while( $row = sqlsrv_fetch_array( $stmt, SQLSRV_FETCH_ASSOC))
{
// Display results (this bit works fine!)
}
/* Free statement and connection resources. */
sqlsrv_free_stmt( $stmt);
However when I try to parameterise it, I get errors.
Error in statement 2 execution in display_search(). Array ( [0] => Array ( [0] => 07009 [SQLSTATE] => 07009 [1] => 0 [code] => 0 [2] => [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Invalid Descriptor Index [message] => [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Invalid Descriptor Index ) [1] => Array ( [0] => 07009 [SQLSTATE] => 07009 [1] => 0 [code] => 0 [2] => [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Invalid parameter number [message] => [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Invalid parameter number ) )
/* Define the query. */
$tsql = "SELECT * FROM webOrganisation ( ? , ? , ? )";
/* Execute the query. */
$start = 5;
$finish = 11;
$params = array($search.'%',$start,$finish);
$stmt = sqlsrv_query( $connection, $tsql, $params);
if ( ! $stmt )
All other parts of the code remain the same.
Where am I going wrong

From MS Dynamics NAV 2013 I get a lot of querries that have a where clause like this:
where [Field1] like @p1 and [Field1] < @p2.
Field1 is the only primary key field and clustered index. The query also has a TOP 50 clause.
@p1 is always a "Starts-With"-value (something like N'abc%').
The query plan uses a clustered index seek but the number of reads look more like a clustered index scan.
Depending on the table size I see 1M or more reads for these querries.
If I rebuild the query in SSMS, but replace the paramerters with actual values I only see a few reads.
I was able to reproduce the issue with a temp table. See code below.
Is there a way to make SQL Server use another strategy when using the parameterized query?
SQL Server Version is 11.0.3401.
if object_id('tempdb..#tbl') is not null
drop table #tbl;
create table #tbl
(
[No] nvarchar(20)
,[Description1] nvarchar(250)
[Code] ....

I've been driving myself nuts trying to get a sensible product search
going. The existing live site search is just a LIKE %searchterm% on
the Title field in our Products table. Fast, but not great ;) Talks
between IT and Marketing have resulted in this being the desired
results and order:
Exact Title match
Substring Title match
Substring Keywords match
Substring Description match
OK, I can easily do this with UNION queries using LIKE (and a virtual
"weight" column in each query), but the query takes too long. So I'm
trying out SQL Server full text indexing, in an attempt to get the
speed up (and the natural language stuff is just plain cool).
Where I'm running into problems is doing a FULLTEXT match on
Description. It seems that to do a phrase match (e.g. "new york"
should match only Descriptions where the phrase "new york" occurs) I
need to enclose the search term in quotation marks in the query (or
maybe single AND double quotes).
But using parameters in ASP.NET (which I'm supposed to do to avoid SQL
injection attacks, yes?) I don't really have full control of the
quoting - ASP.NET and/or SQL Server automagically quotes strings for
me before passing them into the query. I think.
For example, this doesn't find any description matches:
==========================================
Declare @theSearchTerm varchar(100), @theSearchTerm1 varchar(100)
set @theSearchTerm = "new york"
set @theSearchTerm1 = "%new york%"
SELECT m.TitleCode, m.ShortName, m.ShortDescription, 50 as theWeight
FROM Product m(NoLock)
WHERE m.ShortName = @theSearchTerm
UNION
(SELECT m.TitleCode, m.ShortName, m.ShortDescription, 40 as theWeight
FROM Product m(NoLock)
WHERE m.ShortName LIKE @theSearchTerm1)
UNION
(SELECT m.TitleCode, m.ShortName, m.ShortDescription, 30 as theWeight
FROM Product m(NoLock)
WHERE CONTAINS(*, '"@theSearchTerm"'))
ORDER BY theWeight DESC, m.ShortName
==========================================
But this one (where I put in the actual string instead of using the
parameter) *does* get the desired results, including matches in the
Description:
==========================================
Declare @theSearchTerm varchar(100), @theSearchTerm1 varchar(100)
set @theSearchTerm = "new york"
set @theSearchTerm1 = "%new york%"
SELECT m.TitleCode, m.ShortName, m.ShortDescription, 50 as theWeight
FROM Product m(NoLock)
WHERE m.ShortName = @theSearchTerm
UNION
(SELECT m.TitleCode, m.ShortName, m.ShortDescription, 40 as theWeight
FROM Product m(NoLock)
WHERE m.ShortName LIKE @theSearchTerm1)
UNION
(SELECT m.TitleCode, m.ShortName, m.ShortDescription, 30 as theWeight
FROM Product m(NoLock)
WHERE CONTAINS(*, '"new york"'))
ORDER BY theWeight DESC, m.ShortName
==========================================
Trying various permutations of quotes around the parameter gives me
either syntax errors or undesirable results.
Has anybody tried this sort of thing? How did you do it?
Thanks,
Greg Holmes

I have a quite big SQL query which would be nice to be used using UNION betweern two Select and Where clauses. I noticed that if both Select clauses have Where part between UNION other is ignored. How can I prevent this?
I found a article in StackOverflow saying that if UNION has e.g. two Selects with Where conditions other one will not work. [URL] ....
I have installed SQL Server 2014 and I tried to use tricks mentioned in StackOverflow's article but couldn't succeeded.
Any example how to write two Selects with own Where clauses and those Selects are joined with UNION?

I am having a heck of a time figuring out what controls how/when the generated SQL for a report puts a DISTINCT clause in front of it.
For instance, not that this report makes any sense, but I have 58 rows in my fact table/entity €“ If I pull in a lookup field and execute, the distinct is put in the query and I basically get a list of the possible domain values. It runs the whole joined table query to get them, but it does list (in this case) just 4 records. Now I put in the primary ID of the fact entity and the distinct goes away and I get my 58 rows. If I put two lookup fields, the DISTINCT is back. If I pull in the description field (text string just a direct source field mapping not part of the identifying attributes), the distinct is there. If I pull in the Company Name field on a different entity (which is essentially the same as pulling in Description only it is part of the identifying attributes), there is no DISTINCT. I can pull in all my fields on this entity and none of them drive the distinct. And I swear (ok, I am probably lying but not on purpose) the field/attribute and roles properties are all the same on the attributes. But you get my general question/situation...
Any insight for me? Does it have to do with how I am building the report rather than the underlying model?
Thanks in advance,

Hi Guys,
I am having trouble with a particular query that is beyond my scope of understanding.
Basically I need to pull sales records based on the following criteria:
I have CustomerID, InvoiceNumber, ContractEndDate, MobileNumber, etc..
Customers recontract their mobile phone plans through us, and we have a new sales record for each time they recontract.
For example, CustomerNumber 123 has recontracted 3 times..
once on 2006-01-01, then on 2007-02-12, and finally on 2008-02-15..
So they have a 12 month contract each time.. then come in to recontract it.
So.. a customer has a single Customer Detail record, but may have many sales records attached. And a customer may have several sales for the SAME mobile phone number.
Currently to pull ALL sales records for all customers, my query is this:
Code:
SELECT xxx.CustomerID AS xxx_CustomerID,
xxx.Invoice AS xxx_Invoice,
yyy.PhoneType AS yyy_PhoneType,
yyy.PlanType AS yyy_PlanType,
yyy.ContractEnds AS yyy_ContractEnds,
yyy.MOB AS yyy_MobileNumber
FROM dbo.SaleControl xxx INNER JOIN dbo.SaleDetails yyy ON xxx.Invoice = yyy.Invoice
WHERE yyy.ContractEnds IS NOT NULL
AND xxx.CustomerID IS NOT NULL
We want to get a list of customers that we can call to recontract, based on the ContractEnd field.
However, we want UNIQUE mobile phone numbers, with the LATEST ContrtactEnd date.
So, Customer 123 has 6 sales, for 2 unique Mobile numbers, the sql may be like:
Code:
SELECT MAX(yyy.ContractEnds) AS LatestCED, yyy.MOB
FROM dbo.SaleControl xxx INNER JOIN dbo.SaleDetails yyy ON xxx.Invoice = yyy.Invoice
WHERE xxx.CustomerID='123'
GROUP BY yyy.MOB
Now, this works fine, and of course if i remove the WHERE clause, it collects all unique mobiles, with latest ContractEnd date for each, for all customers. (Customer 123 displays 2 mobile numbers, each with the LATEST ContractEnd date)
BUT i need this information ALONG WITH the other fields (xxx.CustomerID, xxx.Invoice, yyy.PhoneType, yyy.PlanType) and i have tried a few ways of doing it, but can't get my head around it..
Keep getting errors about Aggregate functions and Group By clause, and i understand why i am getting them, just cant think of any alternative query.
Can anyone please help me!
Thanks guys,
Mick

I get this server error:
The SELECT item identified by the ORDER BY number 1 contains a variable as part of the expression identifying a column position. Variables are only allowed when ordering by an expression referencing a column name.
Are parameters not good for names of things in a query but ok for values of what those names represent? If not, what am I doing wrong?
Thank you very much.

I have two CheckBoxList controls. One CheckBoxList is a group of area codes as they apply to our customers, and the second CheckBoxList is a group of categories of those customers. The code below works fine with either CheckBoxList as a standalone (this code applies to the Area Codes selection), but what I need is the VB code to combine the choices a user makes in both CheckBoxLists. Is this where parameterized SQL comes into play? Or can I/should I use an array statement to combine both CheckBoxList choices? Sometimes a user will select nothing in one CBL and a few choices in the other, or vice versa, or a handful of choices in both CBLs, so that they might want only customers in, say two area codes and then only the selected categories of those area codes. If I bring up a report in the report server (http://reportserver/Reports/Pages/.... and I set the parameters to see the information I want to see and say to myself, hey, my boss would really like to see this, how would I go about sending him the link to the report with the parameters already set. Ideally when I view the report, the parameters would show in the URL automatically as other reporting products do, however, SSRS does not provide this. I do not even see a function in the report designer to display the link on the report itself so I can cut and paste from it. Anyone know how to do this without having to custom craft a URL or set a one time subscription?
Thanks,

Hi,
Below are two methods o passing a parameterized query, are these the same, or is one open to sql injection attacks more than the other?Option 1 - through code behindDim testDataSource As New SqlDataSource()testDataSource.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("ConnectionStringName").ToString()testDataSource.UpdateCommandType = SqlDataSourceCommandType.TexttestDataSource.InsertCommand = "INSERT INTO test(id) VALUES (@id1)"testDataSource.InsertParameters.Add("@id1", TextBox1.Text)
Option 2: through sqldatasource on page and control parameters<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionStringName %>"InsertCommand="INSERT INTO test(id) VALUES (@id1)" <InsertParameters><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="TextBox1" Name="id1" Type="Int32" /></InsertParameters></asp:SqlDataSource>
Feedback would be great, thanks!
