How To Use SSMSE To Connect To Instance Service Directly (without Going Through Browser Service)?
Apr 28, 2006
I have configured an instance to use static port, say 1435, and I turned off the Browser service.
I would like to know if I can use SSMSE to connect to the instance database directly. The instance is listening at port 1435 and accepting connection requests from other methods.
What I need to put into the "Server name: " field?
Normally, it would be like: <serverIP><InstanceID> with Browser turned on.
Now how do I add the port information to it, I tried
I recently setup mutliple instances of SQL Server Express at my office. I have 1 default instance, and two named instances. I can connect to the named instance of the default port of 1433 with Microsoft SQL Management Studio Express, however the other instances on dynamic TCP ports can not be accessed by the instance name over the internet. I have to specify the dynamic TCP port in this form: xxx.uconn.edu/SQLTEST, Port number. My current thinking is that the SQL Browser service should tell Management Studio Express what dynamic port number each SQL instance is listening to. Any ideas?
I have a VM with SP2013 and SQL Server 2012 SP1. I have installed the powerpivot plugin SP1.But when I run the PowerPivot for SharePoint 2013 configuration tool.
I have a initiator and a target service broker peer.
Both are controlled by a C# unit test. The initiator uses the Microsoft.Samples.SqlServer class. The target service uses stored procedure activation.
Sending a message from the initiator to the target, saves the content of the message, along with its conversation handle in the target's database specific table.
The unit test needs - at a later time - to instruct the target to send a message back on the same conversation handle to the initiator service.
For this the C# unit test creates a Conversation off of the saved conversation handle:
Service client = new Service("cleintservicename", conn, tran);
Conversation dialog = null;
dialog = new Conversation(client, convHandle); Sending the message on this dialog generates an error "Message body: <Error xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/ServiceBroker/Error"><Code>-8495</Code><Description>The conversation has already been acknowledged by another instance of this service.</Description></Error>". Is the error due to the fact that a service - using the activated stored procedure already picked up the conversation, so that a new reference to the service can not be created through the Service class in CLR? If so, I might need then to skip the activated stored procedure in favor or a CLR service, alltogether? Any help - greatly appreciated.
In our project, we would like to use the same data source for our analysis service database cubes and for our reporting service reports.
I created the analysis service project first, deployed successfully. When trying to setting up the data source in the report model project, I selected the "create a data source based on another object", and then selected the "create a data source based on an analysis service project". However, there is no analysis service project to select, and no browse button to see where the reporting service is looking for analysis service project either.
I have tried creating a new analysis service project with data source views, cubes, dimensions and all the stuff, but still cannot see the analysis service project in the drop down box to be selected for my reporting model project data source.
As I am fairly new to the reporting service, I'm sure I'm missing something, but couldn't find much information in the help or on the web. Any suggestion would be much appreciated.
I am using SQL Server 2005 developer edition and Visual Studio 2005. I am working on local computer and when I define a cube I am using data sources to which I can connect without any problem using "Test connection". However, when I want to perform calculation or browse a cube I get a message of either I am as a user do not have permission to access source database (in reality I do have this permission) or source database does not exist (in reality it exists). I check the SQL Server Browse Service and it is not running and the option of starting it is disabled (Start mode is undefined and only properties option can be used). I already have enabled the TCP/IP and Named Pipes protocols but I still cannot browse cube data. Any help SUPER welcome. Elka
I'm trying to configure a named instances of SQL Server 2012 SP2 to have specific IP addresses and listen to that IP on port 1433. Alongside this, I have the default instance running on a different IP and listening to that on port 1433.I've managed to get them configured so that they are reachable using the IP, and looking at the log for each they are listening correctly on that IP on port 1433; in addition, the default instance connects fine using the SERVERNAME.However, when I try and connect to the named instance using the SERVERNAME/INSTANCENAME syntax, I receive the following:-
"Cannot connect to SERVERINSTANCE. Instance failure. (System.Data)"
Configuration for the TCP/IP protocol for that instance is as follows:-
Protocol Tab
Enabled= Yes Keep Alive = 30000 Listen All = No
IP addresses Tab
IP1 Active = Yes Enabled = Yes IP Address = 10.1.1.1 TCP Dynamic Ports = 0 TCP Port = 1433
[code]...
The SQL Browser service is running and prior to switching off Listen To All, I could connect to the instance remotely using the instance name.
SQL Server Browser listens on a UDP port and accepts unauthenticated requests using SQL Server Resolution Protocol (SSRP). SQL Server Browser should be run in the security context of a low-privileged user to minimize exposure to a malicious attack. By default, SQL Server Browser starts using the Local System account. The logon account can be changed by using the Windows Services program. The minimum user rights for SQL Server Browser are as follows:
* Deny access to this computer from the network. * Deny logon locally. * Deny logon as a batch job. * Deny logon through Terminal Services. * Log on as a service. * Read and write the SQL Server registry keys related to network communication (ports and pipes).
In our case the SQL Server Browser service is running under the same Windows account as our other SQL Server services. Do you recommend creating a separate Windows account for the SQL Server Browser service as described above?
Can you help me understand how an attack can occur?
Please assist, the issue with SQL 2005 Browser and SQL 2000 Server Service is understood.
Our problem is with networked 2000 instances and SQL Express. The SQL 2000 machines (Standard & MSDE) do not have SQL 2005 or Express installed only 2000. When a SQL Express computer is put on the network with the SQL Browser service running almost all SQL 2000 machines lose sight of the other SQL 2000 instances. The second the SQL Browser is turned off on the SQL Express box the SQL 2000 machines can see each others instances. It appears that the response from the SQL Express SQL Browser causes the SQL 2000 machine to stop listening for responses. Once in a while one of the SQL 2000 instances will show up with the SQL Browser active on the network and it is my belief that it is because that response made it in before the SQL browser response. Please help as this does not appear to be a recognized issue. I'm assuming there aren't many sites running as many named instances on individual machines like we do.
Please note this appears to be a problem with SQL Express Browser not SQL 2005 Standard's which runs without problems on our network.
I have been trying to drill down to the cause for this event log message: "The configuration of the AdminConnectionTCP protocol in the SQL instance SQLEXPRESS is not valid." It is reported from the SQLBrowser service as a warning when the service starts. I have tried starting SQLBrowser.exe with -c flag, but the output reveals no errors. I have seen this error on three computers. Two are running SQL 2000, 2005 and Express. One was only running Express, but still this message. I then looked into the log for the SQL Express server itself. It shows this message on startup: "Dedicated administrator connection support was not started because it is not available on this edition of SQL Server. This is an informational message only. No user action is required." Now, it appears to me that these two messages may relate to the same "error" (or rather behaviour by design). So, can anyone confirm that the warning in the event log from the SQL Browser service occurs becuase of that the SQL Express edition doesn't allow any "AdminConnection", but the SQL Browser service isn't aware of that SQL Express edition shouldn't support that, and reports it as a warning (implying that we can't do much about this warning)?
I installed MSDE2000 with named instance on top of MSDE 7.0 and rebooted the system. The “SQL Server Service Manager” comes up with default server( MSDE7.0).
But I need “SQL Server Service Manager” has to come up with new instance name and the new server automatically after reboot.
I didn’t see any problem in connecting to instance name if I choose it from the server list. But user wants to see the server with instance name by default when system restarts. Do you have any idea about this?
I'd like to set up a Service Broker queue in one database (dbRespond) on a server so that events in another database (dbEvent) on the same server instance can post messages to the queue. The problem I'm having is that:
The BEGIN DIALOG CONVERSATION needs to reference a Contract that is in the current database, and I want to call BEGIN DIALOG CONVERSATION from dbEvent The target service is in dbRespond. Based on the "Hello World" Service Broker example that comes with SQL 2005, in dbRespond I need to specify the contract in the CREATE SERVICE call that creates the target service. Here, too, the contract must be defined in the current database. How do I deal with needing to have the same one contract in two different databases?
I am running Win XP SP2 and MSDE 2000 SP3a. The user is logging on asa POWERUSER. When the user logs on the MSSQLSERVER service starts butthe SQL Server Service Manager, that runs in the system tray, showsthat the instance has not started. The field that displays theinstance name is blank and it is not listed in the drop down list. The MSSQLSERVER service is set to start with a Windows domainadministrator account. The SQL server can be accessed by a remotecomputer through Enterprise Manager. The local programs cannontinteract with the server though.Does anyone know if I could grant some user access rights to allow MSDEto work under a POWERUSER login?
I am running a named instance of SQL-Server 2005 SP2 on Win2003 with two local partitions C: and F: The TCP settings for this instance have ecplicitly been set to use the port 1433.
The config file for SSIS (F:ProgrammeMicrosoft SQL Server90DTSBinnMsDtsSrvr.ini.xml) has been changed to:
I run the code sample below in a SQL Mgt Studio query window. I get no error messages. However, the two SELECT statements at the end produce undesireable results (see comments). My messages to not make it to the target queue; they get stuck in sys.transmission_queue with the error message in the final comment of the code. The server principal "ddddXXXXX" is a Windows Active Directory account that: 1) is a domain admin in the domain that my SQL Server box is a member server of, 2) is the login used by the "SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)" service account, and 3) is a member of the SQL Server instance's sysadmin fixed server role.
What is it I'm missing that is denying a sysadmin login access to a database?

I was trying to send a message on a different instance in the network using service broker. I have created the endpoint and route both the side. I could see that the messages are in the transmission_queue in the sender side with no error in the status.
What could be the reason.
I am doing the following: CREATE ROUTE inst02 WITH SERVICE_NAME = 'SERVICE2', ADDRESS = 'tcp://10.14.43.149:2341'
in the send script i am using this: BEGIN DIALOG CONVERSATION @dialog_handle FROM SERVICE [SERVICE1] TO SERVICE 'SERVICE2' ON CONTRACT [MainContract] WITH ENCRYPTION = OFF ;
in the sending side if i change the endpoint's authentication as windows kerberos , then i get thefollowing error in the transmission queue:
"Connection handshake failed. An OS call failed: (8009030e) 0x8009030e(No credentials are available in the security package). State 66."
I also have given access to the remote user on this endpoint(on the recever side) using this : GRANT CONNECT ON ENDPOINT::Endpoint_test to paras
I am executing the sending side send script using the same user wich has access to the remote endpoint.
I have received an alert on a server that is running SQL 2005. 'The service pack level of SQL instance is not upto date'.
I have right clicked the connection properties and found that current version is 9.00.1399.06 How can I tell which Service pack the SQL 2005 is currently on?
Do you know of any articles to upgrade service packs?
One server, a part of a 2 node always on cluster, had problems, I had to restart.
I'm getting this error for example now:
Error: 49910, Severity: 10, State: 1. (Params:). The error is printed in terse mode because there was error during formatting. Tracing, ETW, notifications etc are skipped. + SQL Server was unable to run a new system task, either because there is insufficient memory or the number of configured sessions exceeds the maximum allowed in the server. Verify that the server has adequate memory. Use sp_configure with option 'user connections' to check the maximum number of user connections allowed. Use sys.dm_exec_sessions to check the current number of sessions, including user processes.
Now, on the instance I have activated maximum servere memory, my question; Is it possible to adjust this setting without starting the service?
I have an almost virgin install of SQLExpres running on a WIN2K Pro system.
Have been able to create and connect db to Access 2000 without problem.
Now I wish to extend to remote connections. Using Surface Area Configuration tool, I changed Remote Connections to Local and Remote.
Whenever this setting contains TCP/IP and I try to restart the service I receive the following errors:
System Log:
The SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) service terminated with service-specific error 10013.
Application Log:
Server TCP provider failed to listen on [ 'any' <ipv4> 0]. Tcp port is already in use.
TDSSNIClient initialization failed with error 0x271d, status code 0xa.
TDSSNIClient initialization failed with error 0x271d, status code 0x1.
Could not start the network library because of an internal error in the network library. To determine the cause, review the errors immediately preceding this one in the error log.
SQL Server could not spawn FRunCM thread. Check the SQL Server error log and the Windows event logs for information about possible related problems.
If I change back to Local Connections Only or Local and Remote using named pipes only, the service starts up again without a problem.
After five days of investigating, researching, reinstalling and waiting I have to ask for help.
Hello! I have the following problem. I developed CLR Stored Procedure "StartNotification" and deploy it on db. This sp calls external web service. Furthermore, this sp is called according with SQL Server Agent Job's schedule. On my PC SQL Server works under Local System account and this web service is called correctly (Executed as user: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM). But on ther other server the following exception is raised during job running: Date 17.04.2007 16:42:10 Log Job History (FailureNotificationJob)

We are using the whole BI-package from Microsoft - from SQL, DTS-package,Raporting Service and Analyze Service.
It should be very helpful to be able to create a metadata databases where you could find all releations between different objects (tables,views,reports,cubes,DTS-package,Databases.
Just to get answer for: 'where is view xxx used', 'what are Report xxx depending upon'.
While everything exists in different SQL databases it should possible to do.
We seem to be being plagued by the error below by our SQL Server agent. This happens almost everytime we restart the server that has been running for a day or two.
Our SQL Server Agent uses a none expiring domain credential. I understand that this problem only happens when the profile being used by the SQL Servr Agent has changed (password change). What puzzles me is that the login is A ok and no changes has been made to it's password.
We always resolve this problem by changing the login used in the SQL Server Agent to local and after that, returning it back to it's original domain login. Unfortunately, we cant always do this everytime something goes wrong.
Can anyone please help us shed a light on this? We're using SQL2k with SP3a. Thanks!

The odd thing is that after a sql service restart we couldnt connect at all on the SQL port. We were only able to re-connect after rebooting the actuall box. Is there anything that can be done about this? Its strting to look like a network related problem instead of SQL
If I install a new named instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 on a machine that already has 3 named instances that are upgraded to service pack 3, will the install of the new instance overwrite any of the current SP3 files? Will I have to re-apply SP 3 to the existing instances?

I am looking at implementing some sort of throttling whereby "expensive" reports are setup as Subscriptions (and hence are run by the Windows Service), while all other requests go the Web Service.
My question is:
Do the two systems share any underlying systems? I understand (of course) that they use the same DB, etc. etc. However, I can't quite tell whether there is an underlying engine that is a common base or if they really just spin up different instances of the same objects and essentially each host the application separately?
I am currently hardening our SQL 2012 (with AlwaysOn Availability Groups) environment. Both the SQL service and agent account are using service accounts (only domain user). SQL browser service is disabled. Permissions to all roles are handled by using domain groups.
Currently a lot of (default) NT Service accounts are listed (some with sysadmin privileges). Are there accounts that can be removed?
Greetings all,I cannot connect to my SSIS service from Management Studio. This is on my local machine, which is my "sandbox" and preliminary development platform.
There are slightly different error messages and extended information returned depending on whether I connect using "localhost" or my explicit machine name.
I have tried registering MSXML*.dll as suggested elsewhere in these forums. I've also tried the DCOM config changes suggested elsewhere in these forums (or someone's blog?) - can't find the link at the moment.
This is all on the same machine and I am a local admin on this machine.
Anyone seen this? Anyone have any suggestions. I'd appreciate any tips.
Regards,
Tom

This one has really stumped me! I set up HTTP to connect to an Analysis Services cube within an ASP .NEt application. On inititial setup it worked well and I was able to connect and view the data in my ASP application.
However, for NO reason that I can see it is now coming up with the following error:
Either a connection cannot be made to the localhost server, or Analysis Services is not running on the computer specified.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: Either a connection cannot be made to the localhost server, or Analysis Services is not running on the computer specified.
I have tried everything I can think of to fix it but can't get it to work. I have even gone through the technet document titled "Resolving Common Connectivity Issues in SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services Connectivity Scenarios" but it hasn't helped.
I am using SQL Server (Analysis Services) 2005 and ASP .NET 2.0. The application is developed in VS 2005.
