How To Use A Dialog Retry Timer For Doing A Web Service Call

Feb 7, 2007

Hi Remus,

I just started looking into SB about a week ago, so my question is likely to be pretty lame. However, that's not going to stop me from asking it :-)

We're trying to do something similar to what you're describing here. How do you "reset" a dialog timer? Why would you need to deal with resetting timers (or with timers at all for that matter) in the event of a success? Couldn't you rewrite the logic to be as follows?

begin transaction
receive message
if message is web request
save state of request (http address, caller etc)
else if message is retry timer message
load state of request
endif
commit
do the web request (no transaction open)
if success
begin transaction
send back response
end conversation
commit
else
set a retry timer on the dialog (say 1 minute) using BEGIN DIALOG TIMER
endif

Also, when you set the retry timer you have to associate it with the saved request state, right? Otherwise, how will the service know which request to load on receipt of the timer message?

TIA.

Trying To Call A Function On A Weekly Timer

Sep 17, 2007

I'm not sure this is the place for this question, but not sure where else to go.  I've written asp.net  code to read from a sql server 2005 db and send out customized emails based on user info.Currently the process gets rolling by clicking a button in a web page.The client doesn't want to click a button, they want to run the email sender on a timer.How can I set up my function to run on a timer either in asp.net or more likely called from sql server?

Dialog Security With Different Instances Of A Service

Sep 20, 2005

I am in the process of evaluating the use of Service broker for messaging in a load balanced configuration, and am not having any success.  My configuration is as follows.   1) Master database on Box #1 which is the initiator of all dialogs 2) Target database on Box #2 3) Target database on Box #3   One of my goals is that the databases on Box #2 and #3 are as close to identical as possible.   My routing table on Box #1 looks something like the following   Name remote_service_name broker_instance address TargetOne TargetService
E96DC67E-F696-4D93-8545-C2E92157E32D tcp://server1:4022/ TargetTwo TargetService
56607120-26AA-4AAA-B9E4-F14689C40E41 tcp://server2:4022/   My messaging process begins with a dialog initiated from the master database (Box #1) to each of the target services.  At this time, only the first server "tcp://server1:4022/" is receiving messages.  The sys.transmission_queue shows a message outbound to "tcp://server2:4022/" with a blank status.   I believe that my delivery problem has something to do with the resolution of the dialog certificate need for the conversation.  The MSDN documentation states that:   "Service Broker uses a remote service binding to locate the certificate to use for a new conversation...The certificate for user_name must correspond to the certificate for a user in the database that hosts the remote service."    I am confused as to how I would configure remote service binding if one can not create more than one binding for the same remote_service_name.   The following throws an exception on the last creation of the binding.
---CODE SNIP---
CREATE CERTIFICATE UFEDlgCertTargetPublic

Service Broker Dialog And Transport Security

May 25, 2006

what is the difference between the Dialog security and the transport security?

If I disable the dialog security can the messages be sent to the a different SQL server instance. As the transport security will encrypt the messages.

If I don't create a certificate to be used by the transport security can the messages be sent to another SQL server instance?

Can a message be sent to another SQL Server instance without creating a REMOTE Service Binding?

In Service Broker Message Dialog Security Is Not Available For This Conversation...

when ever I send my message thru Service Broker I am getting an error message like this "

"Dialog security is not available for this conversation because there is no remote service binding for the target service. Create a remote service binding, or specify ENCRYPTION = OFF in the BEGIN DIALOG statement."

This I found in sys.transmission_queue

What Permissions Are Required For SQL Server Service Account To Call Web Service Using CLR Integration?

May 18, 2007

Hello! I have the following problem. I developed CLR Stored Procedure "StartNotification" and deploy it on db. This sp calls external web service. Furthermore, this sp is called according with SQL Server Agent Job's schedule. On my PC SQL Server works under Local System account and this web service is called correctly (Executed as user: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM). But on ther other server the following exception is raised during job running:
Date 17.04.2007 16:42:10
Log Job History (FailureNotificationJob)

Step ID 1
Server MSK-CDBPO-01
Job Name FailureNotificationJob
Step Name MainStep
Duration 00:00:00
Sql Severity 16
Sql Message ID 6522
Operator Emailed
Operator Net sent
Operator Paged
Retries Attempted 0

Message
Executed as user: CORPmssqlserver.
A .NET Framework error occurred during execution
of user defined routine or aggregate 'StartNotification':
System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type

at System.Security.CodeAccessSecurityEngine.Check(Object demand,
StackCrawlMark& stackMark, Boolean isPermSet)
at System.Security.CodeAccessPermission.Demand()
at System.Net. The step failed.

What is the reason of this behaviour? Unfortunately I do not have direct access to this server.
I have the following guesses:
1) CORPmssqlserver may have not enough permissions to call web service
2) Something wrong with SQL Server account's permissions
2) Something wrong with SQL Server Agent account's permissions
I will take the will for the deed. Thanks.

Thoughts/patterns For The Following Use Case Related To Service Broker Dialog Network Connection

Dec 29, 2006

Hi,

I would appreciate any thoughts/ideas on the following use case for the distributed service broker application we plan to migrate from our existing proprietary tcp based message protocol using database tables for reliability.

There are two ssb services running in separate sql server instances, each on a different server machine. For simplicity, let us assume the ssb endpoint names are SSBA, SSBB. SSBB is the Initiator of the Dialog while SSBA is the Target. Now the requirement is that if the underlying network communication between the two ssb endpoints(SSBA and SSBB) is broken or if the critical service SSBB is down, then processing of any incoming message into SSBA's queue from a third service broker service (say SSBEXPR) running within a SqlExpress instance should be delayed until SSBB is alive and network communication between SSBA and SSBB is established. In our existing implementation (wherein SSBA, SSBB and SSBEXPR are windows services) we use a combination of TCP socket disconnects and Heartbeat messages between SSBA and SSBB to determine the health of network connection and that of the SSBB service.

Now my understanding of how the underlying network connection for a ssb dialog works is that if there is no activity on a dialog for a certain amount of time then the underlying network connection is closed. Is there a way to specify the amount of time to say infinite value or something and thus change this behavior? My other question is how can one query the underlying network connection (i.e. a row from sys.dm_broker_connections) associated with a particular conversation? If none of this is possible, then any other patterns/ideas/approach is welcome.

Thanks,

Amazon Web Service Call With Web Service Task

May 4, 2006

With the new improvments to the web service task, we can now use variables as arguments in web service calls. I am trying to setup a call to the amazon web service ECS. I am trying to do a simple sellerlookup. I have played with the settings and gotten nowhere. I get one of two error when I try to execute. Can I Call A Web Service From SQL??

I have two databases with two identical tables in seperate physical locations. I want database B tables to be updated automatically when database A tables change. Is there a way to call a web service from SQL to make this happen? Or is there a better way to do this? I would really like it to get the rows that were modified and then copy only those rows to the other database tables. If anyone knows if this can be done please let me know. Thank you.

Why Cant I Call A Sql Web Service From A Url?

Feb 16, 2008

With regular .net web services in vb.net I can expose the service and call it like this:

http://server/EnrollmentLookup/EnrollmentService.asmx/GetS3MonitorLogs?StartDate=02/02/08&EndDate=02/05/08

But when I create a SQL XML Webservice via an endpoint all I can find on the net is how to show the wsdl.

http://localhost/Contacts?wsdl

Ive created a method in the "Contacts" webservice called GetContacts. Why cant I construct a similar url to execute that method without having to write a vb.net wrapper for it?

Call Web Service From Sql Server 2000 Job

I would like to call a web service from a sql server 2000 s.proc/sql job, but if there is a better way please let me know.  I'm using Captaris Workflow to create and manipulate workflow processes.  I have a sql job that will create some pdf's.  I want to call the web service that creates a new process in a step from that sql job.  I have read about doing this with extended s.procs, but I'm trying to find any possible solutions.  Essentially, the web method I want to call will insert several records into sql so I know I can at least do that.  I would still like to know if I can make a call to the web service from the sql job. Thanks for any help.

MS Reporting Service - Call Code

Mar 19, 2008

Hello,

I have a microsoft report that uses a dll to calculate a value. If I hard code the value, my report shows it. My method in the dll is connecting to a database in order to calculate a result. However, in order to connect to the database, I am using Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.

The error in my report is:
Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

I have added a reference in the report to the EnterpriseLibrary but this has not made a difference.

Many thanks!

Web Service To Call Integration Services

Oct 6, 2006

Hi,

I'm hoping someone has tried something similar before. I am trying to run an integration from a remote computer using a web service. I have set up the web service and the bog standard launch package routine works fine. What i'd like to be able to do is to launch a package and also specify any parameters associated with it. I have the following code which is identcal to the main launch sub with the exception of an extra argument (jagged array of varible name and value variablePair[4][2]). It also processes the variable array and sets them on the DTSPackage object.

[code]
[WebMethod]
public int LaunchSSISPackageWithVariables(string sourceType, string sourceLocation, string packageName, string[][] variableArray)
{
string packagePath;
Package myPackage;
Application integrationServices = new Application();

// Combine path and file name.
packagePath = Path.Combine(sourceLocation, packageName);

switch (sourceType)
{
case "file":
// Package is stored as a file.
// Add extension if not present.
if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(Path.GetExtension(packagePath)))
{
packagePath = String.Concat(packagePath, ".dtsx");
}
if (File.Exists(packagePath))
{
myPackage = integrationServices.LoadPackage(packagePath, null);
}
else
{
throw new ApplicationException("Invalid file location: " + packagePath);
}
break;
case "sql":
// Package is stored in MSDB.
// Combine logical path and package name.
//if (integrationServices.ExistsOnSqlServer(packagePath, ".", String.Empty, String.Empty))
if (integrationServices.ExistsOnSqlServer(packagePath, ".", "executeSSIS", "p4ssw0rd"))
{
//myPackage = integrationServices.LoadFromSqlServer(packageName, "(local)", String.Empty, String.Empty, null);
myPackage = integrationServices.LoadFromSqlServer(packageName, "(local)", "executeSSIS", "p4ssw0rd", null);
}
else
{
throw new ApplicationException("Invalid package name or location: " + packagePath);
}
break;
case "dts":
// Package is managed by SSIS Package Store.
// Default logical paths are File System and MSDB.
if (integrationServices.ExistsOnDtsServer(packagePath, "."))
{
myPackage = integrationServices.LoadFromDtsServer(packagePath, "localhost", null);
}
else
{
throw new ApplicationException("Invalid package name or location: " + packagePath);
}
break;
default:
throw new ApplicationException("Invalid sourceType argument: valid values are 'file', 'sql', and 'dts'.");
}

//Variables var = myPackage.Variables;
//foreach (string key in variablePairs.Keys)
//{
// var[key].Value = variablePairs[key].ToString();
//}

Variables var = myPackage.Variables;

for (int i = 0; i < variableArray.Length; i++)
{
var[variableArray[0]].Value = variableArray[1].ToString();
}

return (Int32)myPackage.Execute();
}
[/code]

For some reason the above code runs and passes back the value that it succeeded. Yet the package doesn't do what it should. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this might be the case or even a better way to pass the variables.

Many thanks,

Grant

Call Web Service From Script Task

Jul 2, 2007

I am trying to call a web service using the web service task and passing it variables, but even when I set variables to be Strings/any other data type, they always get passed out as objects. The call is then rejected based on the fact that there is no web service that accepts those parameter types. If there is a workaround to this problem, that would be great, otherwise I think I'm going to have to call the web services in a script task. Would someone please give me an example of the steps necessary to call a web service from the script task?

I got a connection a wsdl, i can configure the service, method and variables(i use fixed values), and i configure the output to a variable with the type object(i have tryed string and int)

I even can download the wsdl file, but the error seems to be in the connection

Any detailed information in possibly calling the Web Service from script or using an object variable would be extremely appreciated.

JDBC SQL Call Failure After Database Service Is Restarted

Nov 28, 2007

Hello ,

I get this error (connection closed) in web applications, whenever SQL Server database Service is restarted. When I run the application again, the error disappears. Granted that there are lots of users and Database gets restarted every night is not helping.

Is there any setting in the JDBC driver properties, where I can tell it to open a closed connection (like a retry count), rather than fail the first time and work the second time.

We use
1. SQL SERVER 2005 SP2,
2. Websphere Protal Server 5.1
3. SQL SERVER 2005 JDBC driver 1.1(com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerConnectionPoolDataSource.)

I am wondering if connection pool driver is causing this problem. I do not care about connection pooling, but Websphere doen not seem to like any other JDBC Driver. I don't mind switching to another driver as the last option.

Error is :

Deploying CLR Sps Or Functions Which Call A Web Service To A Production Server

Dear fellow developers,

I have successfully developed a Transact-SQL stored procedure which calls a CLR function, which calls a web service. I am using a Visual Studio 2005 SQL Server Project to perform the necessary magic.

Is there a neat way to deploy this stuff to a production server?

It is bad enough deploying the sp and function, but the web server proxy also needs to be changed to refer to the production web service.

This all looks very nasty and complicated.

Am I missing something?

Is DTS Step Retry Possible?

Apr 2, 2001

Is it possible to set up some kind of error handler in VB using the DTS DOM that will enable a retry of a step/task within a package? This is a DataPump task with a Custom Task. I am transferring 16 tables within each of the packages, 1 package for each of the 50 states, and executing them 1 at a time from a VB app. I can retry a package from the package error handler but can't find an equivalent for a step or task. I'd rather not have to resend tables, but restart from the table with the problem.

It is possible to write code to recreate an abbreviated form of the package but I'd like to avoid that, too.

Better yet, how can I avoid this error even appearing:

"Execution canceled (sic) by user".

I'm not cancelling anything, but about every 4th package this error comes up, not even while transferring the same table. If I retry the package, it almost always flies.

Message Sent Retry Timeout

Sep 26, 2006

Hi

here is from BOL

>When a conversation is marked delayed, Service Broker performs the matching process again after a timeout period. Notice that failure to find a matching route is not considered an error.

for example it could happen when there is no route for a service.
the question is - what is this timeout. Is it configurable? on a system wide
basis ?

It will be great if this process is described in more details.

Maximum Conversation Timer Interval

Apr 27, 2006

I'm using conversation timers successfully to fire events at a predetermined time in the future, but I'm running into issues when using an interval of considerable size. I set the conversation timeout like so:

set @Timeout = DATEDIFF(SECOND, GETDATE(), DATEADD(MINUTE, -(@TimeOffset), @FollowUpDateTime));

if (@Timeout < 0)

set @Timeout = 1;

// begin dialog

begin conversation timer (@FollowUpConversation)

timeout = @Timeout;

In this case @Timeout was 94693494.

In the SQL error log I see the following error: "Invalid subcommand value 94693494. Legal range from 1 to 2147483."

I thought I may check the @Timeout value and simply set it to 2147483 if it is larger than 2147483, but I was wondering if there was a reason the upper limit was so small.

Thanks,

Chris

A Question On Conversation Timer Persistence

Apr 24, 2006

I'd like to add code to a trigger to calculate the time to fire a message into a queue based on a field changing, and conversation timers seem like the way to go. My first question refers to this line from the BOL:

"Calling BEGIN CONVERSATION TIMER on a conversation before the timer has expired sets the timeout to the new value."

I think that in this trigger, I can simply begin a new conversation if the given field has changed to reset the timer. But intuition tells me that in order to change the timer to a new value, I need to retrieve the existing conversation, correct?

Also, I've read that conversation timers are persistent in that they survive database restarts and shutdowns. But I'm not sure to what extent. After a database restart/shutdown, does the conversation timer "reset" itself to the time interval specified when the conversation was begun or is it able to account for the time the database was down/offline?

Thanks,

Chris
