How To Use Simple Login Form With SQL [newbie] ?
Dec 23, 2005
Heya Everyone !
I am new in Asp.net - I've read tutorial at this page, but i have some problems.
I want to have a login form at my website. I also want that login form is checking if user is in a user table (database). I mean simply login form - you write login and a password, than click button - site execute query (select * from user_table where user_id=login and user_password=password or something like this). But I have a problem with building this all code with sql connections. Can someone tell me how can I send query to my sql database ? And how can I display it? And once more - how set the cookies, but thats the other problem.

I'm trying to wrap my head around inserting values into a table w/ SQLDataSource. What I'm trying to do is have a form where users can submit their feedback and their responses would get put into a table on the backend. It would store not only their comments, but their userid, the url that they were on last, and which area they're from. The trouble is, I have no idea if I'm coding this correctly. On the submit Here is the form: <form id="form1" runat="server"> <asp:SqlDataSource runat="server" ID="feedbackSQL" InsertCommand="insertfeedback_sp" InsertCommandType="StoredProcedure" connectionstring="<%$ ConnectionStrings:Test%>"> <InsertParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="ID" Type="Int16" /> <asp:Parameter Name="Region" Type="String" /> <asp:Parameter Name="Querystring" Type="String" /> <asp:FormParameter Name="Comments" FormField="Comment" /> </InsertParameters> </asp:SqlDataSource> <div> <asp:TextBox ID="Comment" runat="server" Height="200px" Width="350px"></asp:TextBox><br /> <asp:Button ID="Submit" OnClientClick="btn_Submit" runat="server" BackColor="White" Font-Names="Arial" Font-Size="X-Small" Text="Submit" /> <asp:Button ID="Cancel" runat="server" BackColor="White" Font-Names="Arial" Font-Size="X-Small" Text="Cancel" OnClientClick='javascript: window.close()' /> <asp:Button ID="Clear" runat="server" BackColor="White" Font-Names="Arial" Font-Size="X-Small" Text="Clear" OnClientClick='javascript: ClearBox(Comment)' /> </div> </form>Here is the backend: protected void btn_Submit(object sender, EventArgs e) { feedbackSQL.InsertParameters["ID"].DefaultValue = UserId ; feedbackSQL.InsertParameters["Region"].DefaultValue = Region; feedbackSQL.InsertParameters["Comments"].DefaultValue = Comment.Text.ToString(); feedbackSQL.InsertParameters["Querystring"].DefaultValue = URL.ToString(); }When I test it out. Nothing shows up in my database table. I also have another problem, ID is stored in my table as an int, but when I try to set it's value in btn_Submit and try to compile it, I get a "cannont convert 'int' to 'string'" error. Am I missing something here? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks :)

Hey folks I realize this forum is more for people who have a basic knowledge of SQL...but if anyone can help I've got a task I'm trying to complete for a friend's webpage. I'm trying to figure out how to build a basic feedback form fer his students to be able to post on his page what they thought about his class and what they would suggest to make his class better...kinda like a guest book in a sense. No need for login information or anything of that nature, just a simple "put your name here, put your feedback here" kinda deal. I greatly appreciate any help anyone can toss my way. Thanks in advance!

my database is on the attachment. Im decent with vb programming but suck with databases! Basically Ive to accomplish the following. I created code for a calendar that allow a user to enter a value for any date in the calendar. I need to take the values they entered into my vb calendar and save the dates with a value to my database. If I were working with one table it wouldnt be a problem. Unfortunately Im using ADO which only allows for 1 table connection at a time. To compensate for this i used 2 ado connections. 1 for each table. The details table shold store the date of an infraction for the employee(infraction-Date that employee screwed their attendance up by a no-call/no-show, coming in late, etc)
My problem is if an infraction is entered it might be the first time that employee got an infraction and i get an error because im moving both tables at the same time. I know basically im supposed to use an if exists clause for this and then next time the details page is available then re synchronize the tables according to employee id. My prob is I only know what it says in a book. Ive no practical experience. I guess what is like to see is a very simple
vb program hooked up to a database with 2 table a main table and a details table. Then I would be fine As i can pick apart the code to see what it does.
Normally Id just attach my project as a whole but as thier are very complicated calculations in it, Im not yet done with my error checking for these calulations.
Also from what I do know of databases and structure I currently have my table setup correctly I wanted to verify that at this point and hopefully ...see a sample program of this as stated above.

Dear Friends,
I am a PHP/Delphi MySQL programmer for some years, now I am going to create some code in MS SQL and VB. So I downloaded and registered MS SQL 2005 Server Express Edition and some tools like SQL Server Studio Management Express, and VB 2005 Express.
As I have some knowledge of MySQL design and programming, I have installed MS software, rather without problems. Then, using Studio Management I created new database, new table in it with some four fields (int, varchars and smallint). Then from the same tool I opened table and inserted some data, and closed this application.
Next I opened Visual Basic and in Database Explorer I set up connection to my SQL database indicating the file it is stored in (path*.mdf). I ordered not to copy data to new file but to use original one.
Then in Data Sources I created new data source based on previously set connection. In the end I dragged and dropped my table from Data Sources into my new Form of my new Windows Application, nice grid with panel appeared. So I ran the app, I tried to put some data and then after trying to save (using floppy disk icon on panel) i got error:
Update requires a valid UpdateCommand when passed DataRow collection with modified rows.
which appears in event handler for saving in line i've indicated.
Me.Validate()
Me.LudzieBindingSource.EndEdit()
Me.LudzieTableAdapter.Update(Me.TestDataSet.ludzie ) ' <-- here highlights
I tried then to add to ID field identity specification, nothing changed. Then in query editor of management console I put some code:
exec sp_configure 'user instances enabled', 1.
Reconfigure.
As some sources mentioned. I restarted Service. Nothing Changed. So this is my problem. What to change.
I use Win XP Pro SP2.
And next one question, even more important for me is the way I connect to database. I found that in Visual Basic Creating new connection in Database Explorer I indicate the file on my local drive!!! And for example if I try to open my table alongside in Management Studio Express and in my App in VB and the error raises
Cannot open user default database. Login failed.
Login failed for user 'FS7120Mm227'.
which is not a surprise for me as in VB i am using file which cannot be shared.
In MySQL I simply put address, port and so on and I could use my database in Delphi, PHP, and another management tools with no hassle. Is it possible in VB? Or it only can be used to exclusive using database?
Please inform me if such questions shall be directed to VB forum, I am not sure, and thank you for _any_ answer.
MS goes right way giving people great possibility to use and even sell small apps using their Express Editions of SQL and VB, but it is still too confusing for people who encouraged start using their apps and have such basic problems.
Michael.

Hello, I am taking a Database course this semester and I am totally clueless on the general concepts of managing a database. I have a few questions about these two tables. If someone could please answer them and maybe explain it to me I would greatly appreciate it!...and yes it is homework but I really want to understand it!
1.Which column or columns contain redundant data?
2.Why would you want this duplication, give an example of a use of this database that would benefit from redundancy.
3.Give an example of a specific constraints you would place on programs that accessed this database to control the redundancy?

Hi,
I am designing a site using Visual Web Developer, CSharp and Sql server Express.
One the contact page I want to put a form that allows users to enter details about
themselves. On clicking the button this will be stored in the database under a table
called subscribers. The form will have, name, address, telephone, email fields etc.
With the email addresses from the visitors I want to be able to keep them in
a newsletter section or similar which is automated so they recevie emails from time to time
Could somebody suggest a tutorial which shows how to complete this process
using c sharp and sql.
Thanks for you time

I have a Visual Basic application that connects to a SQL server database. In my application, I have a login screen that is supposed to pause the application (it's coded as modal) and ask the user for a login and password. I have my connection string and user set up to use Windows NT authentication.
However, what is happening with my application is that as soon as I start the program, it never stops at the login screen, but instead goes right into the application.
Is this "normal" when using Windows NT authentication? What causes this behavior? How can I make my program stop at the login screen, and more interestingly, would I want to stop at a login screen?
Thanks in advance to all who reply. This is driving my crazy!
This forum is best viewed with a computer. Questions asked freely. Confusion happily shared.

Hi all,
I made a Windows forms app using vb.net (VS2005) and SQL server 2005 Express Edition (to which I'm new). During the creation of the app I used windows authentication in the connection string. Now I want to secure the app, meaning I want the SQL Server database not to be accessed without a username/password. I guess the logical thing is to create a login form, providing the username and password so it can be used for connecting to the database. I thought this would be a standard (thus easy) thing to do, but no forum or article yet showed me a way to accomplish this in an understandable way. I also want to deploy this app using click once technology. I need to distribute this app on a cd/dvd.
If possible, can anyone give me a step by step scenario for this? Many thanks in advance
(ps: please let me know if this should be in another thread)

Hello people! Here is the situation:We have an old propriatary database that is used for daily tasks. Not much we can do with it, but we have to use it.I can create basically a read only connection to it through ODBC.I would like to, on a timed interval copy certain data for reporting from this slow thing to my SQL server so that I can learn to program, and create some cool reports etc without having to wait on this server all day.So here is what I don't quite understand.I had originally planned on just deleting the contents of the tbl on my SQL server just before I populated it each time, but found out that my AutoNumber field will continue to increase, and I'm assuming that eventually I'm going to run into a problem as a result.Should I be doing some kind of update instead? if so do I need to first CHECK if the record exisit, if not then do an insert, if so do an update type thing?Or is there a way to basically do it in one command?I hope this makes sense. I would show you some code but there really isn't much to show you other than my insert statement :->Thanks for any advice!Josh

Oh great ASP.NET gods I <grovel>beseech</grovel> ye...
I'm sorry if this has been asked and answered elsewhere. I'm a complete newbie and I need a bit of hand holding...
I've tried setting up a basic databound datagrid using the MSDE SQL server. I get a login Failed error when I try to display the page in the browser inside VS.NET 2003. I don't get any errors until I actually try to preview the page in the browser. Sorry for the long post below... which is the full error message. What, from what you see, can I do to fix this?
Please be forewarned that I have never used MSDE before or SQL server for that matter (I'm a MySQL guy making the switch!). For that reason I am a little confused about this error because I thought everything was ok because in Visual Studio the DataAdapter previewed with no errors and there were no build errors. I was able to drag the authors table over from the Northwind db, create a dataset and fill it from its dataAdapter.

My database has a user "dbo" which is dbo of all database objects. The login name for this user is e.g. "Login1". Now I need to change the login name for user "dbo" from "Login1" to a new login name "Login2".
It is not possible to change the related login name of the user "dbo" in the user's properties dialog. And it is also not possible to change or remove the dbo relation in the login name's properties dialog (because a dbo user can not be removed).
Is there any possibility to change the login name of an dbo user? How can I do it?

Anyone live in seattle (meet on cap hill)? I have been stuck for weeks now and can't wait any longer wasting time - i will pay someone to set me up correctly quickly. I doubt this will be resolved online, but here goes... I need a datagrid to bring up simple database info (northwind) instead of showing the error 'login failed for mycomputeraspnet'. I am using windows authentication and my string is connectionstring = datasource=(local)\netsdk;initial catalog=Northwind;integrated security=sspi; persistent security=false;, I have seen online they say alter the authorization in the app virtual directory-- is that the C/inetpub/wwwroot or the web config of my project? I did so in the web config of my project, and also I added the impersonate=true to same already. I shared all the folders and made sure they are not read-only. I am flabbergasted.

Hi all, quick, hopefully simple question that has been driving me nuts for 3 days. Using Visual Studio 2005, doing a web app, connecting to an SQL server with already existing login names and passwords...
I have a login name and password text box and a login button. Upon clicking, sqldatasource1 checks to see if the items in the text box match a login and password in the DB. If so, it sets Profile.login and Profile.password to the values in that text box so I can use it to key off the DB for application IDs associated with that login/pass later.
It displays just the login name in a details view upon a match. If nothing is there that matches, it shows a hidden label saying "login failed".
My problem is, that I really don't want the detailsview to display if there is a match. I want it to automatically go to page2.aspx...but I can't figure this out. Response.Redirect("page2.aspx"); doesn't work. It's like the check is happening before detailsview1 shows any data and therefore it doesn't load page2....and I can't figure out how to get it to check detailsview1 for data AFTER it has been displayed.
I guess that I don't know how to get this thing to check if there is something in the detailsview, to go to page 2. It's just not working. Any help would be great! (BTW, not using the builtin login control because I can't figure out how to get that to connect to our sql database's login table.)
Thanks all!

I've installed sql server 2005 on a customer's machine.
I have a very small "connection tester" app C# (2005) winforms app, which I use to verify connection strings. This app has been working for years. I am using the sa account to login with in this test app just to keep things simple. I am using Sql Server Authentication.
When I try to connect, I get a "login failed for user sa". I'm absolutely certain that I have the password correct.
Sql Server Express is setup in mixed mode, and I have all the tcp/ip settings correct ( as far as I know ).
I think if it was a tcp/ip thing, it wouldn't find the machine, as opposed to saying Login Failed.
I'm running out of things to look at.
The machine has .NET 3.5 installed. The connection test was written using C# 2005, .NET 2.x Could that cause a problem?

Hello,
My company Intranet has a form that agents can use to post their comments about the company to upper management, but our customer service department would like to modify the form so that the agent has to pick from a comment type.
The dropdown options on the form will be as follows:
ComplimentsComplaintsGeneral CommentsSuggestions
Each dropdown option has a designated table in a SQL DB.Using postback on the same page, I need to change which fields of the form are visible based upon which dropdown selection the user chooses, and I need the fields to then be inserted into the table that corresponds with the dropdown selection item.
For example: If the Compliments dropdown selection is picked, I need a text box to show for the user's location, the name of the customer, account number, and the message box. Once the submit button is clicked, the characters in these boxes need to be inserted into the Compliments table using its data adapter.
However, if the user selects Suggestions, the name of the customer and the account number should not be visible, since these fields do not exist and when the submit button is pressed, the Suggestions table should be updated.
If you need more information, I will provide whatever is needed.
As always, thanks for everyone's assistance.

Hi,
I got a problem.
I installed Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005 version.
And I created a Compact database.
I created an connection in SSMSE to connect the database and opened a query form.
then, i run the following sql:
Select * from Table1
It returned 3 records to me.
After that, I used program to insert record into this table.
Then i ran this sql again, it still show me 3 records.
I closed the query form, and re-created a new query form, then run the sql, it returned 4 records to me.
Why? It's very strange and difficult to operate, right?
Is there anyone know how to make the SSMSE to return whole records without any close query form and re-create query form operation?
Thanks a lot!
And Merry X'max!!!

Hi everyone,
What is the main difference between first form normalizations and second form normalization ?
In my opinion, they are both generated for the same operation which is to prevent redundancy(in other words; duplication of data in several records).
So would you please explain it to me ?
Thanks

Is it something daft?

Been looking through the forums for a solution to this problem.I already tried granting access through statements such as:exec sp_grantloginaccess N1'machineNameASPNET'But they don't seem to work.. i vaguely remember seeing somewhere a DOS command line statement that grants access to the ASPNET_WP and that fixed my problem before on another computer.. but this is a new computer and i forgot to write down the command. Can anyone help explain and propose a solution to my problem. Many thanxs.

hi,
so i have a new box and I'm trying to get my websites and SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition working on it, but the pages give me the following error when I try to load them:
"Cannot Open Database "XXXX" requested by login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'xxx'"
Everything seems exactly the same settings and user-wise from my old box to my new one, but nevertheless everything I've tried gives me the same error.
I've tried creating new users in SQL Server and giving them appropriate permissions to my database. I've even tried just using the built in 'sa' account. Nothing seems to change the error, except when I give it the incorrect password then it just says 'login failed'
This leads me to believe that i'm successfully logging into the SQL Server, but it doesn't want to give me access to the database I'm requesting access too. But "apparently" the account i'm using should have access to the database. If nothing else the 'sa' account should, but that didn't work either.
I'm stumped. Any ideas?
