How To View Binary Data In MSSQL 2005
Sep 5, 2007
Hi all,
I have a problem reading binary data in MSSQL using the Server Mgmt Studio. All it shows in the column is "<Binary data>". Is there a way to view this data at least the SIZE?
Thanks.

When using AquaData or JDBC (inet tds driver), when doing an insert using SqlServer 2005, I get error "String or binary data would be truncated" when the data is actually OK. There are no triggers, etc. that would confuse the situation. It works fine in SqlServer 2000.
The scenario is as follows:
Create table:
create table test3 (
name varchar (18) ,
tbname varchar (18)
)
Create and populate table:
create table maxtable (
tablename varchar (18) not null,
[...]
)
Try to insert into test3:
insert into test3 (name, tbname)
select i.name, o.name
from dbo.sysindexes i, sysobjects o, maxtable m
where i.indid > 0 and i.indid < 255
and i.id = o.id and i.indid = 1
and o.name = lower(m.tablename)
And I get the error "String or binary data would be truncated." The values being selected for i.name and o.name have maximum length of 18. There are other rows in sysindexes and sysobjects with longer values, but they are not being selected.
The error does not occur with SQL Server Management Studio, and does not occur using SqlServer 2000.

(Appologies if this group isn't the best place for this post)Is it possible to use DAO 3.6 to access binary data (varbinary(max)) inSql Server 2005? I have images and sound in a Sql 2005 DB that I needto retrieve (and write) with DAO (ADO and ADO.Net are not options asthis is legacy code that can't be changed).Thx,Marcus

Hi I've followed a tutorial on how to write and read varbinary(max) data to and from a database. But when i try to read the data i get the error that the data would be truncated, but only when the varbinary(max) is greater then 8kB. I've used a system stored procedure (sp_tableoption) to set the table that holds the data to store data outside rows. To select the data i'm using a stored procedure: SELECT imageData , MIMEType FROM Pictures WHERE (imageTitle = @imageTitle) And then using an .aspx page to Response.Write the data:Using conn As New sql.SqlConnection conn.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("myConnectionString").ToString Dim getLogoCommand As New sql.SqlCommand getLogoCommand.CommandType = Data.CommandType.StoredProcedure getLogoCommand.CommandText = "GetPicture" getLogoCommand.Connection = conn Dim imageTitleParameter As New sql.SqlParameter("@imageTitle", Data.SqlDbType.NVarChar, 200) imageTitleParameter.Value = Request("imageTitle") imageTitleParameter.Direction = Data.ParameterDirection.Input getLogoCommand.Parameters.Add(imageTitleParameter) conn.Open() Using logoReader As sql.SqlDataReader = getLogoCommand.ExecuteReader logoReader.Read() If logoReader.HasRows = True Then Response.Clear() Response.ContentType = logoReader("MIMEtype").ToString() Response.BinaryWrite(logoReader("imageData")) End If End Using conn.Close() End Using Can anyone please help me with this?!

I'm using a bit-wise comparison to effectively store multiple values in one column. However once the number of values increases it starts to become too big for a int data type.you also cannot perform a bitwise & on two binary datatypes. Is there a better way to store the binary data rather than int or binary?

Is there a way in 2005 to script out, directly, a funciton/SP/View or whatever and not have it binary? I used to be able to script something out in 2000 and it would be text and then I could check it into sourcesafe NP and as you know text is much easier to use the compair feature against than binary. Is there a setting in SQL 2005 to handle this? Is it something in Sourcesafe that I need to set?
Thanks,
Phil

DB is developed on local computer with MSSQL 2005 Express. My host is on MSSQL 2005 workgroup. Are they compatible, because I am getting errors? Is my approach wrong?
I have tried several approaches.
A) I created a backup of database on my local, then placed a copy on the server. Then I tried to restore through Server Management Studio. I get this error.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
------------------------------
An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The backed-up database has on-disk structure version 611. The server supports version 539 and cannot restore or upgrade this database.
RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3169)

B: I also have tried copying the database. I put it in the same path as the other databases that can be read with server management studio on the server. Then, tried to get to it through server managements studio and it did not appear. So I tried to attach it. Then I received this error:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

C: I have also tried opening the Database, and back up file through Server Management Studio. without success.
D: I also tried Windows and Software update at microsoft update, but no updates were recommended for Version on Server.
I'm surprised this is so hard. My original data base was created in same family of software. 2005 MS SQL Express. I could use some direct help from someone experienced with this. Am I doing it wrong or are the DB versions incompatible.

Hi,
I am a bit new to the MSSQL server. In our application, we use so many SQL queries. To imporve the performance, we used the Database enigine Tuning tool to create the indexes. The older version of the application supports MSSQL 2000 also. To re-create these new indexes, I have an issue in running these "CREATE INDEX" commands as the statements generated for index creation are done in MSSQL 2005. The statements include "INCLUDES" keyword which is supported in MSSQL 2005 but not in MSSQL 2000.
Ex:-
CREATE INDEX IND_001_PPM_PA ON PPM_PROCESS_ACTIVITY
(ACTIVITY_NAME ASC, PROCESS_NAME ASC, START_TIME ASC, ISMONITORED ASC)
INCLUDE
(INSTANCE_ID, ACTIVITY_TYPE, STATUS, END_TIME, ORGANIZATION);
Any help in creating such indexes in 2000 version is welcome.
Thanks,
Suresh.

I've been tasked to move our production databases on MSSQL 2000 to 2005. I've supported MSSQL since version 6.5 and performed migrations to successor versions.
Current Environment is MSSQL 2000 32-bit with current Service Packs.
I've performed mock migrations on Test servers upgrading all Production instances simultaneously from MSSQL 2000 to 2005 32-bit. The Test environment is identical to Production minus server name, IP etc. Also I have a separate server with MSSQL 2005 installed where I use the DETACH / ATTACH and BACKUP / RESTORE method for migration / acceptance testing. There are approximately 30 databases totaling 70 GB. This has gone as expected and fairly successful. Vendors have been coordinated with to update code and staff for acceptance testing.
I'd prefer going directly to MSSQL 2005 64-bit instead if possible due to memory benefits etc. This is where I'd like some feedback prior to borrowing a 64-bit server for testing.
Upgrade options:
1. Is it better to migrate from MSSQL 2000 32-bit to 2005 64-bit via:
a. DETACH / ATTACH
b. BACKUP / RESTORE
c. Is one method more advantageous relating to the end result?
2. Regarding XP clients, have issues been experienced with the default SQL Server driver or is an alternate recommended for XP clients to connect to a MSSQL 64-bit server databases?
3. If you have performed this migration and have relevant experience please pass them along.

Thanks in advanace for taking the time to read this post.
I am using MSSQL 2005 and have created a function that allows me to use regular expressions in my SQL queries.
My question is I have a pattern buried in a field of misc data that I need to pull out just that pattern and discard the rest of the data. Here is the Regular Expression I am using
select field1 from table1
where dbo.RegExMatch (field1,'[a-zA-Z]{4}[0-9]{6}[a-zA-Z]{2,4}')=1
This returns all values in the field that match the expression. What I want to do now is remove all data from the field on the left and right of the expression that does not match the expression. How would I accomplish this without reading through the 200k+ records and writing rules for every exception I run across?
so I could have Gar b/a ge 'THE GOOD DATA' m/or1 ba4d da....ta. All I want to do is return 'THE GOOD DATA'

String or binary data would be truncated. I get this error when entering data using sql server management studio express.
I am not running a sql to insert or update the table. This is through the EDI.
The data type is varchar(100). I enter one character and it errors on me. So this isn't a string being too long problem.

Hi.
I'm working on an application that will use SQL Server 2005 Everywhere Edition for single user installations (i.e. notebooks) and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition for network installations. The single user databases will synchronize with the network databases.
The databases will have to store a large number of documents of different kinds, most of them will be less than 200 KB in size. According to the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition documentation, I should avoid using the IMAGE data type and opt for VARBINARY(MAX) instead. The current version CTP of SQL Server 2005 Everywhere Edition does not support VARBINARY(MAX) (the maximum size is 8000 bytes).
Will the final version of SQL Server 2005 Everywhere Edition support VARBINARY(MAX)? Or should I use the IMAGE data type in both schemas or IMAGE in the SQL Server 2005 Everywhere Edition database and VARBINARY(MAX) in the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition database?
Do I have to consider anything special when the databases are synchronized via replication because of the large number of rows with binary fields?
Regards,
Gerrit

Hello,
i've written the following query:
SELECT dbo.KALENDER.KALENDER_ID, dbo.KALENDER.JAHR_BEZ, dbo.KALENDER.JAHR_WERT, dbo.KALENDER.HALBJAHR_WERT,
dbo.KALENDER.HALBJAHR_BEZ1, dbo.KALENDER.HALBJAHR_BEZ2, dbo.KALENDER.QUARTAL_WERT, dbo.KALENDER.QUARTAL_BEZ1,
dbo.KALENDER.QUARTAL_BEZ2, dbo.KALENDER.MONAT_BEZ, dbo.KALENDER.MONAT_WERT, dbo.KALENDER.TAGE_IM_MONAT,
dbo.TAG.KALENDERWOCHE, dbo.TAG.WOCHENTAG, dbo.TAG.TAG, s.STUNDE_ID, s.DATUM_ZEIT
FROM dbo.KALENDER INNER JOIN
dbo.TAG ON dbo.KALENDER.KALENDER_ID = dbo.TAG.KALENDER_ID INNER JOIN
dbo.STUNDE AS s ON dbo.TAG.TAG_ID = s.TAG_ID
WHERE (SELECT MONTH(s.datum_zeit)) = ((SELECT MONTH(GETDATE()))-2)and
(SELECT year(s.datum_zeit)) = (SELECT year(GETDATE()))
order by s.stunde_id
when copying that query to the view editor and executing it, it trys to fix it somehow to:
SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT dbo.KALENDER.KALENDER_ID, dbo.KALENDER.JAHR_BEZ, dbo.KALENDER.JAHR_WERT, dbo.KALENDER.HALBJAHR_WERT,
dbo.KALENDER.HALBJAHR_BEZ1, dbo.KALENDER.HALBJAHR_BEZ2, dbo.KALENDER.QUARTAL_WERT, dbo.KALENDER.QUARTAL_BEZ1,
dbo.KALENDER.QUARTAL_BEZ2, dbo.KALENDER.MONAT_BEZ, dbo.KALENDER.MONAT_WERT, dbo.KALENDER.TAGE_IM_MONAT,
dbo.TAG.KALENDERWOCHE, dbo.TAG.WOCHENTAG, dbo.TAG.TAG, s.STUNDE_ID, s.DATUM_ZEIT
FROM dbo.KALENDER INNER JOIN
dbo.TAG ON dbo.KALENDER.KALENDER_ID = dbo.TAG.KALENDER_ID INNER JOIN
dbo.STUNDE AS s ON dbo.TAG.TAG_ID = s.TAG_ID
WHERE ((SELECT MONTH(s.datum_zeit) AS Expr1
FROM ) =
(SELECT MONTH(GETDATE()) AS Expr1) - 2) AND
((SELECT YEAR(s.datum_zeit) AS Expr1
FROM ) =
(SELECT YEAR(GETDATE()) AS Expr1))
ORDER BY s.STUNDE_ID
... but this causes syntax-errors. I don't understand why this query works fine in the query editor but then gets automatically "destroyed" by the view editor. Do i have to use more statements to get the working query to run inside a view?
Thanks alot for reading.

We have a dll that sends a hexadecimal data (const. length) to MS SQL Server database. It's declared as String in VB, the db column data type is binary.
Here is the SQL String that has been executed successfully in Query Analyzer:
"declare @MyHAX varchar(32)
select @MyHAX='0x3236374535454337363145313430463742394545 413443473230343544320000'
insert MyTABLE (MyCOLUMN)
values (convert (binary(32),@MyHAX))"
When I am trying to do the same thing in the insert stored procedure, I get an error message: "Disallowed implicit conversion from data type varchar to data type binary, table 'MyDB.dbo.MyTABLE', column 'MyCOLUMN'. Use the convert function to run this query."
Does anyone know how can I insert my binary data?

I have been pulling my hair out on this.
I am trying to pass a binary value from an ASP.NET app to a VERY simple stored proc, and I can NOT get it to work!
Here is some of my code:
Code Snippet
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_SelectAppointments] @PID VarChar(50)
AS
BEGIN
--set @PID = 0x00000000000000B1
--PLEASE NOTE HERE THAT THE ABOVE VALUE(WHEN UNCOMMENTED) RETURNS RECORDS
--WHEN THE VALUE IS IN QUOTES (AS IT WOULD BE) IT DOES NOT WORK
SET NOCOUNT ON;
SELECT Appt_Date, Appt_Description, Rn_Appointments_Id
FROM Rn_Appointments
WHERE project = @PID --Project is a binary field.
END
I created a Dataset in VS2005, and here is the code that passes the value to the Dataset:
Code Snippet
Dim PID As String = Request.QueryString("pid")
PID = "0x00000000000000B1"
Dim da2 As New sp_SelectAppointmentsTableAdapter
GridView1.DataSource = da2.GetData2(PID)
GridView1.DataBind()
What am I missing?? Can anybody please help me out here?
