The master package has a configuration file, specifying the connect strings The master package passes these connect-strings to the child packages in a variable Both master package and child packages have connection managers, setup to use localhost. This is done deliberately to be able to test the packages on individual development pc€™s. We do not want to change anything inside the packages when deploying to test, and from test to production. All differences will be in the config files (which are pretty fixed, they very seldom change). That way we can be sure that we can deploy to production without any changes at all.
The package is run from the file system, through a job-schedule.
We experience the following when running on a not default sql-server instance (called dkms5253uedw)
Case 1: The master package starts by executing three sql-scripts (drop foreign key€™s, truncate tables, create foreign key€™s). This works fine.
The master package then executes the first child package. We then in the sysdtslog get:
Error - €œcannot connect to database xxx€? Info - €œpackage is preparing to get connection string from parent €¦€?
The child package then executes OK, does all it€™s work, and finish. Because there has been an error, the master package then stops with an error.
Case 2: When we run exactly the same, but with the connection strings in the config file pointing to the default instance (dkms5253), the everything works fine.
Case 3: When we run exactly the same, again against the dkms5253uedw instance, but now with the exact same databases defined in the default instance, it also works perfect.
Case 4: When we then stop the sql-server on the default instance, the package faults again, this time with
Error - €œtimeout when connect to database xxx€? Info - €œpackage is preparing to get connection string from parent €¦€?
And the continues as in the first case
From all this we conclude, that the child package tries to connect to the database before it knows the connection string it gets passed in the variable from the master package. It therefore tries to connect to the default instance, and this only works if the default instance is running and has the same databases defined. As far as we can see, the child package does no work against the default instance (no logging etc.).
We have tried delayed validation in the packages and in the connection managers, but with the same results (error).
So we are desperately hoping that someone can help us solve this problem.
Hi everyone..I'm definitely new to SQL 2005 managerment.. I had a Vista which is connected to a network. Why I can't see the server instance of Vista to XP?
Something a little wride mysterious is happening with my package when I deploy it to run at the SSIS server instance. Everytime that I try to deploy it (from my local development environment) to SSIS server, my package is not keeping its database user and password.
As the database user and password are the same one we dont need to use the XML setting to keep these data there.
So, does anyone know what could be happening with my package and/or my deployment?
We would like to deploy SSIS packages as an ETL Tool to an appserver that does not have SQL Server 2005 installed. Is this possible, or does it HAVE to be executed on the server with SQL 2005 installed?
I created a query, which makes use of a temp table, and I need the results to be displayed in a View. Unfortunately, Views do not support temp tables, as far as I know, so I put my code in a stored procedure, with the hope I could call it from a View....
The box I am trying to connect to is running two instances of SQL Server. There is a SQL Server 2005 instance which is the default. There is a SQL Server 2000 instance which is named 'SQLSERVER'. I can connect to the SQL Server 2000 instance no problem:<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPCSQLSERVER;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" /> However, I am having trouble connecting to the Default SQL Server 2005 instance. I have tried: <add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" /> but it doesn't work. I have tried explicitly setting SQL Server 2005 to use port 1434 (as SQL Server 2000 is running on port 1433), and then used: <add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC,1434;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" /> but this doesn't work either.
Am I mssing something here? Any help much appreciated Thanks...
hi, Can someone tell me when to use SQL Server View as oppose to Stored Porcedure? Currently we do everything with SQL Server stored procedure. I mean, even if we have to display some report, we use Stored Procedure. In what situations and senarios views are better and one should consider them over Stored Procedure?
I am maintaining an application where most of the business rules are inTriggers, Stored Procedures and User Defined Functions. When a bugarises, it can get very tedious to debug. Today for example, I wantedto modify a function that was being called by a trigger. The problemis that I don't want to change the function, for fear that it is beingcalled by one of the other SP's or triggers in the database (there arehundreds of them)Essentially, I need a tool that allows me to view where functions andsp's are being referenced from. At the very least, I'd like to performa "full text search" in the database objects, so that let's say I havea function named "fn_doSomething", I can search the schema for thisstring and get all the places where it appears.As you can see, I'm in the dark here. I've never worked on a systemwhere all business rules are at the database level. If you know of atool that does what I describe above, or anything else that wouldfacilitate my life, please let me know!Thanks for your help,Marc
Hello, i have a problem regarding stored procedures and view server state.
I have an application with a lot of stored procedures, one of them checks data of the connected users. In SQL 2000 i had no problem getting this information, but in SQL server 2005 i do.
my stored procedure looks like this:
ALTER PROCEDURE [dba].[applsp_GetConnectionInfo]
(
@DBName varchar(100)
)
WITH EXECUTE AS OWNER AS
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON
DECLARE @sCollationMaster VARCHAR(128);
DECLARE @sSqlString VARCHAR(900);
-- Determine collation from master database because collation from master and ultimo database may differ
SELECT @sCollationMaster = CAST(databasepropertyex('master', 'Collation') AS VARCHAR);
SET @sSqlString =
'SELECT max(status) AS Status, max(isnull(SCISUSENAME, ''ULTIMOLOGIN'')) AS Login
, MAX(Rtrim(Rtrim(convert(varchar(255), nt_domain)) + nt_username)) AS NTUser
, max(Rtrim(hostname)) AS Host, MAX(Rtrim(program_name)) AS Program
FROM master.dbo.sysprocesses JOIN dba.SCONNECTIONINFO on SCISPID = CAST(spid AS VARCHAR)
AND ( SCISUSENAME = ISNULL(loginame, '''') COLLATE ' + @sCollationMaster + ' OR ISNULL(loginame, '''') = ''ULTIMOLOGIN'')
WHERE ...... AND DB_NAME(dbid) = ''' + @DBName + '''
GROUP BY hostprocess
ORDER BY Login
';
EXEC(@sSqlString);
END
I've granted view server state permissions to my user 'dba' which is the db_owner. When i execute the query in the stored procedure seperatly as dba i get all the info i need, but when i execute the stored procedure i don't see anything.
I seem to have the same problem with sp_who2 Executing it gives me information about everyone but when i put in a stored procedure like this:
I've two instances(Default, Named[dynamicsFINANCE]) running on SQL server 2014. However, when I try to connect to named instance say (dynamicsFINANCE) using SQL authentication from local SSMS, I get below error message:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)
I assigned a static port number to the named instance [dynamicsFINANCE] 1450. I also setup the firewall rule to allow access to Port 1450.
I have a 3 node cluster on which I have installed SSAS as it's own insntance. I have created this as a named instance and can connect to it by serverinstance if I'm on the server itself. However from my desktop I get the error saying instance was not found on server name.
I have defined an alternate port and setup firewall rules and can connect via server:port but not serverinstance. Prior to making this change SSAS was running on default port of 2383 and I could connect just by servername.
I have read many articles for previous versions saying that clustered SSAS will always use 2383 and that you must connect just using servername. However and this is were it gets strange. I have a 2 node UAT cluster with SSAS setup exactly the same way I've described above and I can connect from my desktop as serverinstance.
Should I be able to connect as serverinstances for a named clustered instance in 2012 ?
Users have asked if, in addition to the scheduled run, they can have it so that they could dump a file into the input directory and then kick-off the package immediately.
Problem is that things fail if they try to start the package when the scheduled instance of the package is still running.
Is there any way that the package could check to see if an instance if itself is currently executing and refuse to execute if there IS an instance running?
I want to move one database from the source SQL Server 2000 instance to a new SQL 2000 instance in another machine. I have five user databases in this source SQL instance. How should be my approach to move this single database out of this ? My understanding is restoring this database in the new instance, copying all logins to the new instance and then copying the jobs, DTS packages, alerts, operators only specific to this database will do it. Please let me know if this is exactly what I should do ..

i created a DTS package and i used to run it. im very confused how the communication happens between the two machines and which process run where and which initiates which and which machine allocates waht resources. im really interested to know all these things. if any one know plz help me out.
The developers in our shop have a need to explicitly grant view definition permissions to themselves on stored procedures they create in their development databases. They have dbo level permissions in these databases and although they can explicitly grant view definition permissions to other developers in the same database, they are unable to do so for themselves. When they attempt this, it appears that they are successful but when they check the stored procedure afterwards the permission is not there for themselves.
While this does not cause an issue in development, the intention is for these view definition permissions to be carried forward to the test and production databases where they only have datareader permissions.
When these stored procedures are scripted out by the dba to move to Test and Production the view definition permissions are not scripted out for the developer in question.
Is there a way that a developer with dbo rights in a database can explicitly grant themselves view definition permissions on a stored procedure they create as dbo?
I've tried several different way to execute a oracle storedprocedure from a DTS package but to no avail.I have a Linked Server setup which does bring back Oracle tables from theserver when I click on the Tables icon.Here's my DTS statement:exec omsd..OMS_TECO.SP_Callback_Update_Pkg(116);omsd is the linked serveroms_teco is the owner of the oracle stored procedureSP_Callback_Update_Pkg is the oracle stored procedure(116) is the parameter passed to the oracle stored procedureI put the above exec statement in a DTS Execute SQL Task using a Connectionthat I tried using several OLE and ODBC Data Sources. I have two SSIS projects each with different packages. I have setup the packages with configurations stored in a SQL Server table in MSDB. When I create the configuration on the second project it overwrites all of the first projects configurations. Is there a way to to get two different project configurations stored in the same SQL Server table? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I have a SSIS package called "MyExport" stored on the SQL server 2005 standard SP1. I have created an SSIS package configuration stored in a SQL table msdb.dbo.SSIS Configurations, with the configurationFilter = "Export2" with some configuration values which I can change programmatically as needed.
How do I execute this package with the configuration in the SQL table? I don't seem to have any problem when the package configuration is stored in an .xml file. The documentation is very poor or non-existant on trying to do execute the package with configurations stored in SQL server. I just can't seem to get the proper syntax.
Can someone give me an example of a dtexec command for the above or maybe some c# code?
In Execute Package Utility, when you select the Configurations option, it pops up a dialog box for a FILE based configuration file (*.dtsconfig). There is NO WAY to access a configuration stored in the [dbo].[SSIS Configurations] table - which is where the SQL based configurations are stored. If you could pick a SQL based configuration, you would then need to pick the ConfigurationFilter for the configuration you want to use.
It's the same when you try to create a new job in SQL Server Agent - you can't select the package configuration stored in SQL server. When you get to the configurations tab, you can only add a file based configuration.
I've checked BOL as well, and there are no examples or discussion of this that I can find.
If anyone can point me in the proper direction, I'd appreciate it.
awhile back someone (i think it was darren) submitted a post which had a code example of using sql server agent stored procedures to execute a package. i searched for the post, but i didn't find it.
anyway, can someone please re-post that example or provide a similar one?
Got windows Vista Business edition, installed Visual Web Developer Express, SQL Server 2005 Express SP2, SQL Server Management Studio SP1 in that order. I was developing in VWD express without problems using WinXP but now on Vista Business, the local connection to SQL server appears to be a problem. I know there's nothing wrong with my web.config or anything like that as it was working perfectly prior to running under Vista. If i specify the database on the live website, it works fine. If I specify the test database in app_data folder, I get the following exception:-

I am taking a guess it's somerthing to do with access issues, but can't find anything out on searching the forums etc.. I am setup as an administrator, running VWD as an administrator and for the record, SQL Server Management Studio express works fine. Another small issue, when I run the application from VWD, I always have to minimise the application and restore it as the graphics get corrupt. Please help!! I cannot debug when running of the live website.
As a starter i tried to modify and translate the Personal Website Starters kit from the VS2005Team SDK.
When i'm working on the machine were it's installed , under debugging, all works great.
But when i try to develop from my laptop, via RDP on the develop machine, i've got this message and can not debug (connect to the SQLxpres Server)
Does anybody now a solution ?? Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.

I have written a VB component to execute a SSIS package stored in SQL server.
I am using the Microsoft.sqlserver.dts.dtsclient, dtsconnection/dtscommand
and executereader and everything works perfect on the local machine. This is descibed in a msdn site .
But my customer have a remote SQL server and want no extra BI clients/SQL server clients etc on the client machine, only an ordinary windows client and network connection to the SQL server.
My question is: Can you still use dtsclient or do you have to do in some other way?
I am new in .NET development and currently trying to learn VWB through Microsoft online tutorials.
Here is the problem that prevents me from getting further:
in VWB, when you right click App_Data and chose "Add New Item" and then select SQL database, the following error message is displayed:
"Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed."
If I cancel out of it, it does generate mdf file under App_Data folder in Solution Explorer, but when I try to open it, it says:
"The item does not exist in the Web directory. t may have been moved, renamed or deleted." and that is where the whole sharade deadends.
I can connect via mycomputersqlexpress under Data Connections in Database Explorer (it then adds "master.dbo" to the path) and then create custom tables, but that is not the same, isn't it? I mean, this will not integrate my database tables through default configuration that I am trying to follow?
when I try to connect to an mdf as a power user, --------------------------- Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition --------------------------- Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed. --------------------------- OK ---------------------------
I was able to do do this before until Saturady when I had to re-install sql server, and express etc due to some system problem on my xp Pro PC. What have I misconfigured?
I do see the service SQL Serer(SQLEXPRESS) started under Network Service and SQL Serfver(MSSQLSERVER) started under local system.
My power user ID does have modify access to the sql 90 database folders. and to the mdf.
No wonder Microsoft is giving it away for free. It€™s not worth anything. I am very disappointed in this version of SQL server. I decided to start learning VB so I downloaded and installed VB 2005 express edition and SQL 2005 express. I tried to build a personal website using the starter kit. I kept getting the following error message, for which I have seen numerous postings on this forum. €œFailed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.€? I went out and bought the Standard version of VS 2005 thinking there may be a feature that the free express version is lacking. I uninstalled the express version, cleaned the registry, deleted all the folders it created and installed the Standard edition. Then I tried to create a personal web using the starter kit and it does the same thing again. I can not create a database file, connect to a database file. I can not create or attach a database on the SQL 2005 express from VS 2005. The SQL server Express seems to be working OK since I can attach to it using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express. There is something about the way VS tries to connect to the database server that is not working. VB does recognize the local computer as a SQL server but can not connect to it. SQL server is set to accept Shared memory, TCP/IP and named pipes for local clients. What is causing this? This is some information on the system I am using:
MS XP (SP2)
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Version 8.0.50727.42 (RTM.050727-4200) Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0.50727 Installed Edition: Standard
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.1399.00 Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2000.085.1117.00 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) Microsoft MSXML 2.6 3.0 4.0 5.0 6.0 Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.42 Operating System 5.1.2600
I am now to programming but nor computer illiterate. I have been working with MS SQL servers since version 6.5 and have MCSE, Network+, A+ and Security plus certifications. Installing and using VS should not be this problematic. What is wrong with Microsoft?
When I open my SSIS package in VS2005, the designer shows the very bottom right of the control flow design area where none of my package objects are so the screen appears blank. I have to move the scroll bars up and to the left to view my package. Is there some setting to change this behavior?
OK, I was able to successfully migrate all of my DTS packages to SSIS, for SQL 2005. I can log into intergration services and see my packages listed under:
servername --> stored packages --> msdb. Now my question is, how can I open these packages, not run them open them in a design mode like you can in SQL 2000, you can double click on the package name and view the design of the package. how can i do that now that I have them in SQL 2005?
I've created a DTS package runs on every day and night, but now my boss was asking if I can insert an exception code to check the view file.
So.. I need help from you guys, cause I don't know How.
This is my DTS description.
My DB will generate a view called "Calls to Add", then it will run the Transform Data Task and insert into a txt file. once it finished, it will run the Batch file. that is it.
Now My boss wants me to add a checking code between "View to Txt" procedure. If the view has no record inside, than the DTS package should stop and not run.
