How To Write Command For Insert Data With Running Number
Jan 11, 2008
My table has a running number primary key. I want to insert data to this table and automatically generate running number pk. I try to write SQL command like this.
SELECT MAX(ID) AS MaxId from test
INSERT INTO test (ID, data1, data2, data3) VALUES (MaxId+1, @data1, @data2, @data3)
but it fails. How should I do? Thank you in advance

On my site users can register using ASP Membership Create user Wizard control.
I am also using the wizard control to design a simple question and answer form that logged in users have access to.
it has 2 questions including a text box for Q1 and dropdown list for Q2.
I have a table in my database called "Players" which has 3 Columns
UserId Primary Key of type Unique Identifyer
PlayerName Type String
PlayerGenre Type Sting
On completing the wizard and clicking the finish button, I want the data to be inserted into the SQl express Players table.
I am having problems getting this to work and keep getting exceptions.
Be very helpful if somebody could check the code and advise where the problem is??

Hi there,
This seems a bug to me. Or does anyone has a logical explanation that escapes me?
When in SSIS Designer Version 9.00.1399.00 I add output columns (numeric 4,0 ) to a scriptcomponent and fill them with valid numeric data in thescript I get a database error 'invalid number' when I use these columns in an OLE db Command-transformation . This errormessage disappears when I replaces those columns by a dataconversion to the datatype they originally have.
Derived Column Name Derived Column Expression
STATUS_DEF Replace 'STATUS_DEF' (DT_NUMERIC,4,0)STATUS_DEF
Maybethis info is usefull for somebody else who can't figure out wathever he's doing wrong.

I have a website that is used to enter dates from a calendar. For example, user A might go to the website and select 20 different days in January. When user A clicks on the Save button the dates are written to the database with an INSERT command. This works fine. However, when user B then goes through the same procedure, say selecting 5 dates that are in the set selected by user A, those dates are properly saved in the database but the rows containing user A's same 5 dates disappear. I suspect this is something simple but I'm new and ignorant. Please help.

Hello,
In a Data Flow Task, I have an insert that occurs into a SQL Server 2000 table from a fixed width flat file. The SQL Server table that the data goes into is accessed through an OLE DB connection manager that uses the Native OLE DBMicrosoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server.
In the OLE DB Destination, I changed the access mode from Table or View - fast load to Table or View because I needed to implement OLE DB Destination Error Output. The Error output goes to a SQL Server 2000 table that uses the same connection manager.
The OLE DB Destination Editor Error Output 'Error' option is configured to 'Redirect' the row. 'Set this value to selected cells' is set to 'Fail component'.
Was changing the access mode the simple reason why the insert from the flat file takes so much longer, or could there be other problems?
Thank you for your help!

Hi all
I currently have a problem where I need to create a backup from MSSQL, via a command line, ideally from a batch script. This is on a PC. Each machine has SQL Server 2000 on.
I just need to know the code that dos will tell it to run the sql statement. Ideally the command will also give the directory to place the backup.

HiWe're using SqlServer 2000.I want to run a DTS using the DTSRUN command. The commmand is inside a ".bat" file which my application is runningfrom an SQL client. No matter how I run it from the client it fails giving me the message:[ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access deniedI've tried to run it from the client from the application, from thecommand prompt and it fails.I went into enterprise on the client and tried to run the DTS fromthere. The run failed already on the 1st step which is a call to astored procedure, also giving me the same message. This really stuck meas wierd because in enterprise I'm accessing the server successfully sowhy the above messgae. It identifies the server and I am accessing it.Because it failed on the 1st step which is a call to a stored procedureI tried running the sp from within query analyzer and it succeeded.Has anyone got any idea what the problem is and ghow to solve it.Thanks !David Greenberg

Here's a challenge that is killing me:I've got 2 web servers and a SQL Server and about 5,000 'users' whostay connected to the site all day. I have a page that is supposed tobe 'real-time', so to do this, I have a 1px frame that refreshes every15 seconds (so the other frame doesn't have to reload all the time--thetop only reloads when a new record or a changed record hits the db).The real time data can be filtered in about 8 different ways.Currently, I have each user querying a table that contains 1 record, including the max ID and the most current insert/update posting date. The browser contains a cookie with that date. When the browser receivesnotification that there is some new info on the server, it refreshesthe top page and reloads the data. This is happening for all users. So,I thought to eliminate the 5,000 users running the same (or closevariations) of the same query each time a records is inserted/updated,that I would generate an XML file with the current day's data.In a dev environment this works 'ok'. I'm doing this by running anActiveX job on the SQL Server that calls a stored proc (FOR XML) andwrites the content to a file. Then from the web servers, I'm queryingthis file for the new timestamp and then if newer than the cookie, grabbing the XML (using the httprequest in the ASP XMLDOM) and usingXSLT to transform the data instead of parameterizing the queries.Theoretically I love this solution. Problems happen in a LIVEenvironment where either the file is being written to or the job isn'table to run. When 2 records are trying to be written within the samesecond, the file isn't being written (or maybe that the http requestingthe XML is keeping the file locked?)....anyway...this is a HUGE problethat I can't seem to solve. Once we roll to .NET I think storing thedataset in cache and updating cache (still don't know how I'll triggerthat without each user checking the db)....Long winded, sorry...help?

I am trying to write a report that includes different lab values for an account number depending on the test. What I mean is if patient xyz had lab work and procedure number 1012 was ordered I need to include one line for the highest result value and one for the lowest result value. If I have procedure number 1032 I only need a line for the lowest value. I have a list of about 40 lab procedures that some require both highest and lowest, some just the lowest and some the highest. I am debugging an app which blocks many processes in a SQL7 server DB.The app log writes every transaction "open" and "close".The weird thing is : when the app logfile says the transaction isdropped (object closed) the db keeps showing the process "running", ina sleeping mode, with open_tran in 2 or even 3 and in an awaitingcommand status. We are working on NT4.0, SP6a (all fixes up to date, MDAC 2.7SP1) onIIS side, an equal box for MTS (same patches and updates) and a SQLServer 7 (on NT4, same fixes ans SPs) database on another box.Is this normal? Those sleeping processes are blocking other apps andeverything gets slow and messy....the only solution is to kill thoseblocking processes. Thanks!

For reasons beyond the scope of my question, is there a way to run this command within a Stored Procedure from a low privileged user login? I can grant the entity "db_ddladmin" privilege and the proc runs, but I'd rather not give out that level of permission to what is basically a glorified web access login.

Hi,I have dumped a very large database from mysql (using mysqldump program)as a raw sql file. The reason was, convert this database to a MSSQLdatabase. Since mysqldump creates the file as raw sql file with thedatabase-table structures and the data in it, I thought using OSQL commandline utilities should work to out this whole database in MSSQL server.I have run this command from command line:osql -u sa -i mysqldump.sqlIt is going since yesterday. It has been almost 36 hours that it'sstarted. And in the mssql server, I see no database created yet. On thescreen of the command line, I see bunch of numbers are going in order. Iassume they are row numbers of the tables processed. But, if it is doing it,then where is it saving all this data ? I have checked the tempdb, pub db,other dbs, and I see no tables related to the database I am inserting. Willit populate it at the and of the job ? Or, am I doing something wrong here?Regards.Murtix.

I need to have a script where it ask the user for a value, the script will search for all records that match the value. Then it will display the numbers of records found and ask the user to enter a different value. The rest of the script will use this new value and increment by 1 n times as the number of records found. I started the script where it will ask for "HANDLE" and display the number of records found with that "HANDLE"
declare @HANDLE as varchar(30)
declare @COUNT as varchar(10)
declare @STARTINV as varchar(20)
set @HANDLE = ?C --This is the parameter to search for records with this value
set @STARTINV = ?C --User will input the starting invoice number
SELECT COUNT as OrderCount FROM SHIPHIST
where HANDLE = @HANDLE
I just can't figure out how to proceed to use the entered invoice # and increment by 1 until it reach the number of records found.
This will be the end results:
Count=5 --results from query
STARTINV=00010 --Value entered by user

I'm trying to analyse that query and reduce the number of logical reads as it's is too high but then I get completly different result on different PC.
Thanks.
