Oct 22, 2007We recently upgraded to SQL 2005 from SQL 2000. We have most of our issues ironed out however about every 1 minute there is a message in the Application Event log and the SQL log that states:
EVENT ID 18456 Login Failed for the users DOMAIN/ACCOUNT [CLIENT: <local machine>]
This is a state 16 message which I thought meant that the account does not have access to the default database. The account is actually the account that the SQL services run under.
Any ideas? We can't seem to figure this one out. We actually upgraded to 2005 from 2000 and had an error appear after every reboot that prevented the SQL Agent from running(This application has failed to start because GAPI32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.) We did a full uninstall of SQL and reinstalled fresh and restored the databases from .bak files and that is when the EVENT ID 18546 started occuring every minute.
We don't have any SQL heavy hitters here so please be detailed with any possible solutions. That you very much for any help you can provide!

MSSQL Server 2005 Not Reporting Errors To Windows Event Log

I just performed a fresh install of MSSQL 2005 Server Developer Edition on my XPSP2 machine along with MSSQL 2005 SP1 and I noticed that errors are not being reported in the Windows Event Viewer. Is there a way to enable/disable logging here?
I need to view these logs because when the tasks > 'copy database' task fails it submits its error in the Windows Event Log however since I reinstalled MSSQL 2005 these log entries don't appear here.

Is there a way to write event log using transact-sql? For example, I can specify eventId, eventType, eventDescription. I find RAISERROR and sys.messages can write event, but I can't control the eventId and eventType. Also the event description is formatted in a sql server way, like 'Error: 50000 Severity: 1 State: 2 ....'. Do I have to write a dll that can be loaded in sql server to achieve this?

I am getting an odd error being logged in the event log to do with reporting services.
Report Server (MSSQLSERVER) cannot connect to the report server database.
We have 2 servers in the farm running on IA64, these errors are showing on both nodes they are connecting to a clustered SQL server instance. The odd thing is though, everything seems to be working! Reports run, the web viewer works, we are able to deploy reports from VS2005. So i am at a bit of a loss as to where and why we keep getting these errors.

WMI Event Watcher - Pointing Directly To A Machine Name

I am using a WMI Event Watcher task to watch for files dropped into a directory over a network drive.
It seems to work fine when it is pointed to a physical drive name, but not when I use a machine name.
I.e.
This works -
SELECT * FROM __InstanceCreationEvent WITHIN 10 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "CIM_DirectoryContainsFile" and TargetInstance.GroupComponent= "Win32_Directory.Name="C:\\temp\\folder1\\folder2\folder3""
This fails -
SELECT * FROM __InstanceCreationEvent WITHIN 10 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "CIM_DirectoryContainsFile" and TargetInstance.GroupComponent= "Win32_Directory.Name=\\\\machineName\\folder1\\folder2\\folder3"
The failing code does not throw any errors (i.e. SSIS thinks the WQL syntax is correct), but it doesn't pick up any dropped files.
Am I doing something incorrect with the syntax, or must I use a physically mapped drive letter?

Event Viewer Errors
Jan 7, 2005My boss has now decided that he doesnt want to see SQL errors in the event viewer, unless they are actual errors.
The two errors are:
A - When the DB log is truncated it goes into the event viewer as an error. This needs to either not go into the event viewer at all, or be classed as something other than an error.
B - "Sqllib error: Database x is not simple." This one I dont even know what causes it, but the same thing applies, either it shouldnt be logged, or it needs to be logged as something other than an error. Although what does cause this message?
Any help on these would be appresiated

I have a bunch of SSIS packages that were created on a 32-bit machine (OS as well as SQL Server) where they run without error. I have moved them to a machine with a 64-bit OS as well as 64-bit Enterprise SQL Server, SP2. Initially I encountered errors with the packages that contained Script Transformation tasks where I had to set PreCompile=True. This allowed me to execute the packages individually. When I try and execute them as a batch, I encounter errors on various packages. They don't seem to be consistent - sometimes the error occurs on one package, the next time it will be on a different package. Sometimes they occur pre-execute, sometimes post-execute. Here are a couple of example errors:

Write Conflict Errors

I have an Access front end to a MS SQL database. I use ODBC to connect the two and have linked the tables into access correctly.
I am having a problem with Write Conflicts. Access is showing an error box every time I try to change records that have links to them from other tables. I am not trying to change keys or any index fields. If I go to the SQL Enterprise manager I can change the records every time with no problems.
Anyone out there got any idea as to what is happening? I have been trying to solve this for over a month now and am completely stuck.
Cannot Connect To SQL Express - Machine.config Errors And More

Lets start from the beginning. I open Visual Studio, create a new empty website and then go to add a new SQL Database (new item > SQL Database). It asks me if i want to put this into the App_Data folder (which i choose 'yes' to), and then this error comes up...
I then decided to try a website template i found that i know works (because i got it running on Visual Studio at work), and this error comes up when i try to build the site...#

Sorry about all the screenshots but im new to sql connections etc. Its all works fine at work and i can add a new database connection etc, but on my Home machine (Vista Ultimate, Visual Studio 2005 Pro, SQL Express).

Spurious Errors With Package Execution On Local Machine
Jan 5, 2007I am having strange errors with a package when running locally that has not been an issue before.
The main symtom is that several Data Flow Tasks are either not inserting records on the destination or are only inserting 1 single record before the package errors with the error shown below.
Strangely, the debugger will show X # of records from source and destination, but either no records are actually written or, again, in many cases, only 1 single record is written. This is very strange.
App, System and Security logs yield no indication of security or other errors. All I have to go on is the above anomolies and the error message provided below.
Below is the error message, can someone help me decrypt it?

SQL Sever 2005 Write XML Data Stored In A Table Out To A XML File On My Local Machine

Just wondered if someone could help me with a bit of T-SQL, i have a application in ASP.NET/VB that allows the user to update a message board by clicking a button "update" this in turn triggers my Stored Procedure for inserting this data into a table, which works great.
It inserts the data into its respective fields and also takes The Title, Line 1, Line 2 and so on and creates a XML file (Using FOR XML) which is stored in the same Table under a column call XML_Data. Which again works great.
My problem now is how do i output this XML_Data to an actual XML file that is on my local machine, i.e. It be created in say C:Inetpubwwwrootxmlfiles("xml file name inserted here from another column that holds xml file name").xml
Any help on this would be greatfully apreciated

SQL Server 2008 :: How To Make Sproc Return Errors For Underlying Table Errors
Jul 1, 2015I recently updated the datatype of a sproc parameter from bit to tinyint. When I executed the sproc with the updated parameters the sproc appeared to succeed and returned "1 row(s) affected" in the console. However, the update triggered by the sproc did not actually work.
The table column was a bit which only allows 0 or 1 and the sproc was passing a value of 2 so the table was rejecting this value. However, the sproc did not return an error and appeared to return success. So is there a way to configure the database or sproc to return an error message when this type of error occurs?

WMI Event Watcher Task Continual Firing Event When Not Triggered
Apr 8, 2008I have been testing with the WMI Event Watcher Task, so that I can identify a change to a file.
The WQL is thus:
SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent within 30
WHERE targetinstance isa 'CIM_DataFile'
AND targetinstance.name = 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup\AdventureWorks.bak'
This polls every 30 secs and in the SSIS Event (ActionAtEvent in the WMI Task is set to fire the SSIS Event) I have a simple script task that runs a message box).
My understanding is that the event polls every 30 s and if there is a change on the AdventureWorks.bak file then the event is triggered and the script task will run producing the message.
However, when I run the package the message is occurring every 30s, meaning the event is continually firing even though there has been NO change to the AdventureWorks.bak file.
Am I correct in my understanding of how this should work and if so why is the event firing when it should not ?

I am using Script Transformation to output a new column as image[DT_IMAGE]
field to store serialized object. In the VB script, the sample code as

Connection Pool Leak In Production Machine (in Other Machine It Runs Well)

I'm facing a problem that drives me crazy. I've a web application that has the following problem. When I test the application on my developement machine all runs fine, but when I put into production server there is a problem in connection pooling. Look at the following image, the blue line is the number of connection in the pool and the violet line is the number of connection reclaimed. From the image it is clear that connection are returned on the pool only in block, maybe when the garbage collection pass and reclaim the object. The strange thing is that on my developement machine all is good, and also I'm using Enterprise Library and the connection are managed internally.- Thanks to everyone for any help.

Xp_cmdshell Under SQL Server 7.0
Oct 7, 1999I am trying to issue an xp_cmdshell command via a guest account. I have given the guest user in the master db exec rights, and when I do something simple like
execute xp_cmdshell 'dir c:'
I just get the reply that the command completed without any returned data. However when I am on as 'sa' I get the results back as expected.
