Hello all. I was just wondering how I could add the current date and time to the name of the .bak file. I perform a full backup daily and would like to keep a weeks worth of backups, but everytime I run the job, it just overites the previous one.
The command in the wizzard is:
BACKUP DATABASE [snl] TO DISK = N'C:Backups_for_FTPSNL_Full.bak' WITH NOINIT , NOUNLOAD , NAME = N'snl backup', SKIP , STATS = 10, DESCRIPTION = N'SNL Backup', NOFORMAT
Thanks,
Parallon

Using SQL Server 2005 Server Management Studio, I attempted to back up a database, and received this error:
Backup failed: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Backup and file manipulation operations (such as ALTER DATABASE ADD FILE) on a database must be serialized. Reissue the satement after the current backup or file manipulation is completed (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
Program location:
at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Backup.SqlBackup(Server srv)
at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlManagerUI.BackupPropOptions.OnRunNow(Object sender)
Backup Options were set to:
Back up to the existing media set
Overwrite all existing backup sets
I am fairly new to SQL 2005. Can someone help me get past this issue? What other information do I need to provide?

I got full backup on daily schedule its taking more space on Drive because each file has more than 25GB.I am using SLQ server 2008R2 so I'm looking to take the backup with compression instead of uncompressed Backup. What are the impacts of compressed backup. Is there any problems with compressed backup while restoring the backup file.

I should restore a SQL Server 2005 Database from backup. The backup contains three files, named user.bak0, user.bak1 and user.bak2.
How is the syntax of the restore filelistonly and the restore database ... ?
I usualy write
restore filelistonly from disk = 'path and filenam.bak'
restore database. zy
from disk = 'path and filename.bak'
with replace,
move.....
move....
This works but I cannot use it with a splitted backup file. The files are much too big to put together to one file.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,
Basically the above is a very common requirement, please comment on my solution which I've arrived at by searching through the web; -
In summary I have used 3 SSIS components these are "Flat File Source", "Derived Column" and "SQL Server Destination".
1) File Connections Manager Editor
1.1) Within File Connections Manager Editor; -
Name the data type e.g. "INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC"
and assign a type to the data type e.g. string[DT_STR]
1.2) Click on the Preview button to ensure the expected text is assigned to the expected data type.
2) Derived Column Transformation Editor
2.1) Assign Derived Column Name, e.g.
INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE
2.2) Select <add as new column> within Derived Column.
2.3) Enter the conversion Expression, e.g. ; -
2.3.1)
(SUBSTRING(INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC,8,2) + "/" + SUBSTRING(INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC,5,2) + "/" + SUBSTRING(INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC,1,4))
2.3.2)
Since the above conversion is such a common task I suggest that Service Pack 3 of SQL Server 2005 delivers the following functionality; -
STRINGTODATE ('YYYYMMDD',INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC)
2.4) Select "database timestamp [DT_DBTIMESTAMP] " as Data Type.
2.5) Within the Mappings tab of the SQL Destination Editor have; -
Input Column as INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE and
Destination Column as INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE.
Please comment on the above, I will then pass on my suggestion to Microsoft.
Thanks in advance,
Kieran.

I asked this question below, but the answer was that the conversion will take place automatically, but I can't get that to happen. I have a flat file with an 8 position field that I identify as string (and I also tried date) that is yyyymmdd and it needs to go into the database field that is datetime format. IS there something I am doing wrong with the definition of it, or do I need to add some kind of conversion, and if so, what and how would that be done. I'm a dts Sql2000 expert, but the SSIS thing is driving me crazy. I have a ton of dts' to convert and the migration tool doesn't work because there are a lot of active X scripts in them. thanks for your help. Boston Rose

My customer got a total hard drive failure. After sending it to drive recovery specialist we were able to recover the LDF log file (MyDB_0.LDF).But the MDF file was completely destroyed (MyDB.MDF).They have a good full backup from a month ago.
1) Installed SQL Server 2012 on a new PC
2) Created a new database of same name (MyDB) - with same MDF and LDF file names as original
3) Took the new database offline
4) deleted the MDF and LDF files of the new database
5) put "MyDB_0.LDF" in the place of the LDF file I just deleted
6) put the database back on-line
7) after hitting F5 to refresh databases - it shows "MyDB (Recovery Pending)"
8) tried to do Tail Log Backup with this command
BACKUP LOG [MyDB] TO DISK = N'C:BACKUPMyDB_TailLog.bak'
WITH NO_TRUNCATE
And I get this error...
Msg 3447, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
Could not activate or scan all of the log files for database 'MyDB'.
The sad thing is I know we can get this data back using ApexSQL-Log. I can see all the transactions since the last full backup in this program - so the log file is not damaged. But my client doesn't want to pay the $2000 fee for this software. There has to be a way to restore this data, without having to purchase a third party tool.

I got datawarehouse mdf of course and datawarehouse log but what is that huge file (1 TB)?

I have a ssis package where I need to have excel destination. In the Excel file, I need to have few rows with some text and then populate data below the text. One the text is like this:
Data as of: 08/25/2015
if the report ran today, then Data as of will have Yesterday. So, if the user opens that excel file after a week, then user should see same Data as of: 08/25/2015. not today()-day(1).
I was planing to handle on excel side with today()-day(1). but it only works the day it was run. Then the excel file is open after few days later, then it might as Data as of: 08/30/2015 which is not true. It should still stay Data as of:
08/25/2015 on what ever date the excel file is open. The SSIS package runs only once.
How do I handle this so that whenever user open the file, they will see Data as of: 08/25/2015. This is not a column in excel. It is like a description of data in excel.

The Sql Server database can only see the local drive.
I would like to set up a batch file that will copy a SQL Server
backup file from the local drive to the network drive. I would
like to append the file date to the end of the copied file. I
assume a batch file can accomplish this but I am new to batch
file writing. Does anyone have code that they already created
for this sort of task??
Thank you!

I have a question on how the retain parameter works for Backups. If I have a nightly full backup for a database and have retain = 10, does that mean on the 11th day the very first backup will be purged? Will the 11th backup attempt to take up some of the space that was occupied by that first backup? It seems that the 11th backup would be too large for the space that the first backup was taking up. I am fairly new to backups with SQL Server and want to ensure I am setting this up properly. Our goal is to keep backups for 10 days only.

Hi,
I tried to backup the master key by the following syntax :
OPEN MASTER KEY DECRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'mypassword'
BACKUP MASTER KEY TO FILE = 'c: empmaster' ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'mypassword'
but it failed and i got the following message:
Cannot write into file 'c: empmaster'. Verify that you have write permissions, that the file path is valid, and that the file does not already exist.
NB: I am using the "sa" user to execute this command.
I know that we have a security permission issue , but where and how ?

We have no certified SQL DBAs. Mainly because 95% of our production data is on Oracle and DB2 databases.
One of our Oracle DBAs is trying to write scripts that can be run by the AS400 robot to export data and backup the databases. I (being the only person with any SQL expierance) have been asked to ensure that the scripts she wrote will not only work but not bring down the server.
Can anyone point me to the correct place (web, book, ect) to find out how this is to be done? In years past my SQL servers have been stand alone dedicated units. With db backups scheduled through the SQL Manager and tape backups handled by the sysadmin.
Please help,
Cwells

After a bad server crash, the only remnant we have of our SQL server database are the .mdf and .ldf files in the MSSQL7/Data folder. Can we restore this database from either of these files and if so, what is the procedure? Sorry but I'm an SQL server newbie.
Thanks in advance,

Hi,
I dropped a SPROC, and was in the process of reacreating it when I lost power. Now I don't have the SPROC except for in an old backup file.
Is there anyway to get this without restoring the DB ? If not, can I easily restore to a different DB name and then delete it? My backups are on my live server and I don't want to overwrite my current DB with my backup :)
thanks for any suggestions!!

I am using SQL Server 7 and have about 5 databases. One of them has a data file of about 10 Meg, and most of the others are larger. I do a nightly backup to both a local and mapped drive. On both, the size of the backup file for this database is more than 500 Meg, but the rest appear to be an appropriate size. Does anyone know why this would be happening? The database works fine, it does not get a lot of insert/delete activity and I run DBCC every weekend. If anyone has any ideas I would sure like to hear from them.

Is the name of the last backup file recorded anywhere in SQL2K? I do backups every 2 hours, and want to restore backups from database A to database B once a day using the latest backup. Unfortunately the backup files don't have the time the backup started (e.g. 1600), but have the time they ended (I presume); e.g. 1604.
I want to automate the process; any suggestions on how to find the name of the last database file?
