Huge Durations In Trace - Why Is Timeout Not Enforcing At Times?

May 25, 2006

Running SQL2005 and on occasion I see durations of 928809 or even 2830562 in the trace for commands that usually run in the 7000 range.  Reads are still in the 1200's even during the huge duration spikes.  These are calls from ASP.NET ADO.NET and there should be a 30 second timeout on them by default to boot.  I see a few other times that we've logged timeouts so I know the timeout is working at times but not at others.  Any ideas what's going on both with the strange serious outliers and the fact that these queries aren't timed out properly?

Transaction Log Huge Loading SQL Profiler Trace Files In Simple Mode

Dec 8, 2007

Hi there - can anyone advise on the following issue. We have recently performed some server side tracing on a particular SQL instance over 24hr period. We are now attempting to load these into a database for analysis. Here lies the problem.

When we are loading the profiler trace files (one at a time) into the database the transaction log is growing at an excessive rate. Even though the database is in SIMPLE mode.

We are loading the traces using the command:

INSERT INTO sqlTableToLoad
SELECT * FROM ::fn_trace_gettable('MytraceFileName', DEFAULT)

Can anyone advise how we could possibly get round this issue as we're running out of space due to the transaction log.

Thanks

Web Site Times Out - Setting A Timeout Value

May 23, 2007

My web site times out when I run a SQL Stored procedure that takes 47 seconds.
I thought that I had prevented this by setting time limits to 600 seconds for both the SQL connection and httpRuntime  My web.config contains: -<add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=xxxx;Initial Catalog=gdb;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=xxxxx;Password=xxxxx;connection timeout=600" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>and
<httpRuntime maxRequestLength="8192" executionTimeout="600"/>
Is there anywhere else that I should specify this larger timeout limit?
Thanks, Robert.

Huge Deletes In A Huge Table

Apr 3, 2000

SQL 7 SP1 NT4 SP5

I have a TRANSACTION table with 150 million rows.

I have a USER table.

Each user has about 600 records in the TRANSACTION table.

The TRANSACTION cluster index is on USERID + RECID . The second index is on USERID + Fieldx + Fieldy.

The TRANSACTION table gets about 1.4 million inserts in a normal day and about 40,000 updates.

I want to go through the USER table and delete all users who have not visited me in a while.

I want to do this without substantially hindering performance in a production environment. I can perform this over a week period or two if needed.

The best way I thought of doing this was to grab x amount of users in a cursor and loop through deleting their corresponding TRANSACTION records.

Does anyone have any ideas on a better way. What is going to happen to my indices during this time ?

Thanks !!!

Stored Procedure Executing Durations Are Different

Jan 24, 2008

Hi,

I have a web application using Stored Procedure (SP). I see that there's a SP taking long time to execute. I try to capture it by Profiler Tool, and find out that with the same SP on the same db with the same parameter. The duration of executing by my web app is far bigger than the duration of executing on SQl server management studio - query window

Please see the image attached

Any ideas for this issue?

Thanks a lot

Enforcing A Relationship

Mar 19, 2007

I'd like to create a relationship between two tables in sql server 2005, where a User can be a Partner and a Partner must be a User. So it 0-1 and 1-1. How do I enforce this relationship?

I will also be creating a view from this, will there be any problems when inserting data into the view?

I might aswell add that I'm actually working on asp.net's new membership and roles, so I don't want to change the default tables.

How To Use Reporting Services Without Enforcing SSL?

Apr 11, 2007

Hello,

I have a reporting services application that needs to run reporting services without a user context. However, it will not pass the SSL check. I am using a self-signed certificate that is in the trusted certificates store. What I would really like to do is run reporting services without enforcing SSL (just not allow port 80 connections from the firewalll for security) and merely allow SSL connections when they come in so that any local programs can use reporting services without the need for SSL. As far as I know, Reporting Services (ISAPI filter?) is somehow checking the http headers and not allowing, at least an anonymous, a connection *unless* SSL is forced (WHY?). If my app redirects using the https://FQDN or http://localhost to reporting services it fails the SSL check.

Is there a way around this or can simply do something with the certificate store, like trusted certificates or publishers, so that my local programs can pass the SSL check?

Enforcing Application Access Only

May 24, 2006

Hi all,

sql server 2000
windows 2000
authentication is through the db (not windows).

I am attempting to limit access to one of our production sql server databases. I want to ensure that only application users can connect to the db, i.e they connect to the application and the application connects to the database (database access is transparent to them). The app uses a common login account.

I would like to prevent users from connecting to the db using ad hoc query tools or other EDIs (toad for sql server, ...). Currently there is nothing stopping them from doing so using the application acct/pwd.

I am contemplating writing a trigger that checks for the program that the user is using and if the program is not recognized, kill the session. Is this the right approach or is/are there any "out of the box" utilities that will do this for me?

FYI. the acct/pwd that the app uses to access the db is well known to users.

Enforcing Minimum Cardinality In SQL Server

May 8, 2007

I am trying to understand constraints and minimum cardinality.

In a relationship between 2 tables, t1 and t2, with a parent to child relationship of

1 to 1 or more
how is the minimum cardinality enforced?

If both sides of the relationship require at least one occurrence, how would the insert be done? How can you insert into table t1 when it has a constraint that there must be an occurrence in table t2, or vice versa?

Any help in understanding this is greatly appreciated!

Enforcing Password Complexity In Sql Server 2000

May 23, 2006

Hi all,

Are there any built-ins, utilities, ... within sql server 2000 that can be used to enforce password complexity in the database. i.e at least 8 characteres, upper and lowercase mix, includes at least on number and one punctuation (underscore,...).

I understand that this requirement can be achieved using windows authentication. Unfortunately we do not have that luxury (at the moment).

Enforcing Precedence Constraint While NOT Failing Package(On Failure Logic Ignored)

Aug 1, 2007

I have designed an SSIS package that :

(1) contains a for loop task (in which all the logic is contained) that loops through a particular folder for excel files
WITHIN THE FOR LOOP:
(2) pulls data from an excel file into SQL Tables(Data Transformation Task)
(3) run stored proc to validate data (Execute SQL TASK)
(4)ON SUCCESS of executing the SQL Task (Script Task - move file to success or reject folder based on value returned from sproc)
(5)ON FAILURE of executing the stored proc (Script Task - move file to bad format failure)

NOTE:
I have modified the MaximumErrorcount property of (1 FOR LOOP) and (3 EXECUTE SQL TASK) and the package itself to 0.
In order to deal with badly formatted excel files...I do not want the package to stop for every missing tab in excel file or data entry error. I simply want the badly formatted file to be moved to a special folder

PROBLEM:
on failure logic is never executed (I have 2 options after step (3)) on success do step (4) on failure do step (5)
step (3) fails...then it simply iterates to the next file
step 5 is never executed

Is this because I changed the maximumerrorcount property?
What am I doing wrong witht he Precendence Logic?

SQL Security :: Enforcing Unique Constraint On A Column Encrypted With Cell Level Encryption?

May 11, 2015

I want to enforce a unique constraint on a column which must be encrypted in MSSQL 2005 using Cell Level Encyption (CLE).

CREATE MASTER KEY ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'itsaSECRET!!!3£3£3£!!!'
CREATE CERTIFICATE ERCERT WITH SUBJECT = 'A cert for use by procs'
    CREATE SYMMETRIC KEY ERKEY
    WITH ALGORITHM = AES_256
    ENCRYPTION BY CERTIFICATE ERCERT

[Code] ....

The output makes it obvious why the constraint has 'not' been enforced.

Timeout Expired. The Timeout Period Elapsed Prior To Obtaining A Connection From The Pool.

Feb 5, 2004

Ok bear with me here :). I have a server that is getting about 1000000 hits per day with about 10,000 unique vistors. For the past 2 months I have been revamping my code trying to deal with the increase in traffic. I have 2 boxes, one for the website, and one for the SQL. They are connected through a secure backlink so that I dont have to worry about encrypting the data. So the problem started when I updated the MDAC components a few weeks ago. I started getting these freaking timeout errors, they are up to about 1000 errors per hour. I have been monitoring the connection pooling using the system monitor for about a week and have noticed that I am not maxing out the pooling but I am still dropping connections. I went into the web.config and turned my max connections to 1000. Unfortunately this didn't even put a dent in the problem. It doesn't matter if I have 12 or 212 open connections it still drops them. I am at my wits end with trying to debug this problem. I am wondering if anyone else has had similiar problems recently. Also on a side note I have checked all my connections to make sure that I am closing them. Not only do I close my datareaders but I also set them to nothing. In addition to closing and reseting my datareaders I am also disposing and reseting my connection objects as well as closing them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Daniel Christoffersen

btw the timeout expired happens when a stored procedure is executed at the Fill method !
Thank you in advance

Timeout Expired. The Timeout Period Elapsed Prior To Completion Of The Operation Or The Server Is Not Responding.

Jul 15, 2007

Hi!
I am having a problem with my windows app in VB.net. I am just trying to do a very simple select command to retrieve some data. I am using a hosting server with a VPN.
When i click on the button it keeps giving me the error above. When I use server management express to do the same query it works fine and relatively fast.
So I have tried setting the CommandTimeout to 120 but when it stops, the debugger shows that the value of the COmmandTimeout is 30, although it stops after about 15 secs.
I am really lost and would need some help please! Find my code underneath.
 Private Sub RetrieveButton_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles RetrieveButton.Click

Timeout Expired. The Timeout Period Elapsed Prior To Completion Of The Operation Or The Server Is Not Responding

Feb 1, 2008

HI,

I am getting this error on web server. My Appication is working fine on my Local Network where DB server and web server are on different machine. But getting TimeOut on web server. I tested the query on Query Analyzer it takes hardly 3 sec (Max) to execute. There is only Select query and total number of records are around 2100 which is not a big data.
I have used Connect Timeout = 180  in connection string which is also not effective.
please tell me how can I handle this exception.

Timeout Expired. The Timeout Period Elapsed Prior To Completion Of The Operation Or The Server Is Not Responding.

Mar 7, 2008

We've been having timeout problems.
In our development environment we have IIS and SQL Server 2005 both running on the same box. We use VWD or our dev server's IIS to run the apps.
What happens is the database stops responding to our web applications and we continue to get the timeout error. I can still execute queries from Management Studio but all of the web apps all timeout.
Then, the only was we can get the database to start responding again is if we restart the SQL Server service.
Any ideas as to why the database would stop responding to all of the web apps but not Management Studio? It tends to happen a couple times a day when we are developing. Only the other developer and myself use the DEV environment.

Hi, I keep getting this error. I have a query that takes 47 seconds when I run it in SQL Server 2005. My connection string looks like this:connectionString="Server=server; Database=db; Pooling = true; Connect Timeout=60; Max Pool Size=300;I understand that Connect Timeout 60 = 60 minutes. Is there any other place where a timeout can be set in an ASP.NET 2.0 application? Thanks for any ideas.

Timeout Expired. The Timeout Period Elapsed Prior To Completion Of The Operation Or The Server Is Not Responding.

Jan 3, 2004

"Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."

Environment:-
Framework 1.1
DB:SQL Server 2000 (SQL Provider)
OS:Windows 2000
Language: VB.NET

I'm trying to do mass inserts/updates. Using Transactions. The table hierarchy contains 3 levels (TL1, TL2, and TL3):
Here is what I'm trying to accomplish:

1) Start Begin Transaction (in desperation, I've tried all the isolation levels- I was hoping ReadUncommitted would work!)
2) Do an Insert/Update in table TL1 (this works).
3) Grab the ID from step 2 and do a SELECT on table TL2 to determine if I need to an UPDATE or INSERT.

Since I'd be inserting 3 rows into table TL2 (for a particular parent ID with different types), the first SELECT (on TL2) works and then I'm able to do an INSERT into TL2. The transaction is still alive. Now, I try to do a SELECT on table TL2 to see if a record exists for this type and this is when I get the exception "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."

My guess is that I have a LOCK on the table TL2 (from the first SELECT), which seems to be causing the problem.

Note:
The INSERTs and UPDATEs are done by executing stored procs.
For the SELECTS, I'm using a different connection (from the one which the transaction is using) and close it after the SELECT is executed.
