I Need To Find Out How Long My SQL Server Has Been Up.

Sep 1, 2000

I need to find out how long my SQL Server has been running and I believe that there is a way of obtaining this info by querying a system table (or executing a procedure).

Does anyone know about this?

Find People Names In Long Text

Feb 14, 2007

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I need all the advise and help I can get on this ... so please post anything you think would work ... A little confused I am:
Have a database table called "people" with "person name" and "ID" field. My ASP.NET application mainly stores articles in article table. An article's Article text mentions various people's names in different combinations (e.g. John, Smith, John Smith, Smith John, etc)
Is there any way, I could compare the article text stored in article table with people table and get the people from people table along with their ID's who have been mentioned in that article? ... so in an article "i love john smith ... and i think Mr smith has always been helpful", I get John Smith back...
Not too sure being honest, what is the best way of implementing this, looking for the most efficient way, probably using XML? SQL Query or may be ASP.NET's code behind?
Thanks once again for taking the time.
Cheers,
Tyro

SQL Server Stored Procedure Best Practices? - Long

Jun 13, 2007

I'm an experienced SQL Server and .NET developer, but I wanted to expand the way I look at things and see how other developers approach the situation I'm going to outline in this post. I'm going to be engineering a large, new project soon and I want to examine how I approach this and see if there is a better way.

I work in a small development group with two developers (myself and another). We pretty much wear all the design, testing ,and development hats during the course of a system's development. I had a discussion today with the other developer about creation of stored procedures.

I like to create small specific stored procedures for whatever I'm doing. I will usually have at least 4 stored procedures for each table; Insert, Delete, Update, and Select. Frequently I'll have more Select procedures for special cases. I do this for several reason. One I can get Visual Studio to generate the basic procedures for me and utilize them in a typed dataset. Secondly I can keep all my SQL code server side, and in small maintainable chunks. It is also fairly obvious what my stored procedures do from the name. The main drawback is that the list of stored procedures gets huge.

The developer I work with likes to create a single stored procedure for Insert, Update, and Deletes. Based on the passed primary key, the procedure determines what it should do. For example:

Code Snippet

CREATE PROCEDURE udp_users_processing
@key int output,
@name varchar(200),
@status int
AS
IF IsNull(@key,0)=0
BEGIN
INSERT INTO ut_users(key, name, status) VALUES (@key, @name, @status)
SET @key = SCOPE_IDENTITY()
END
ELSE
IF KEY > 0
UPDATE ut_users SET key = @key, name = @name, status = @status
ELSE
BEGIN
DELETE FROM ut_users WHERE key = @key
END
This has the advantage of being compact, but it has issues with VS.NET and designer support. Loss of designer support isn't a huge problem, but it can be handy to have. I'm also not certain how this approach would work when using typed dataset and the table adapter to do updates.

What is YOUR opinion? How would YOU approach this in your situations? Are there other alternatives that might work just as well?

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Restore Database From GUI Takes Long Or Never Pop Up

Mar 24, 2015

I have SQL 2014. When I try to restore a user database using SSMS GUI, the Restore Database Pop up box never pops up. This happens for any database on this server at any time. Sometimes I get the pop up, some times I dont get.

So I tried to click on Databases on Top and Restore Database, and then select the db that I need to restore from Drop down, then it shows "creating restore plan selecting backups" but it takes forever.

We have full backup and trn log backups every 30 mins. So is it trying to get all these backup files in the background causing this issue? If yes then how to overcome this?

SQL Server 2008 :: Updating Geography Column By Passing In Lat And Long For That Row

Apr 28, 2015

I have the following in my table. As you can see the Geo field is null (which is of type Geography), what I'm trying to do is populate that with an update statement by comparing the latitude and longitude for each row so I can then work out the distance, I've been following this tutorial to workout the distance which is giving me the desired results

[URL] ....

The issue I have is passing in the points i.e latitude and longitude and then updating the Geo field for the row, I currently have 11938 rows in my DB so I need to run this against all of them. I thought I had it I was thinking of update then select from the source but then I realized I need to pass the lat and long in for the points and that's where I got confused

SQL Server 2014 :: Alter Table Add 2 Fields Takes Too Long

Sep 25, 2015

We have a proc that adds some fields to a few tables of ours and normally there are no issues. For one of our client databases this process is taking anywhere from 5-10 minutes to add the fields. This causes an issue where the app will timeout waiting. After plugging around and looking at the proc and trying different items i found it to only be for this one database and ONLY when there is data in the table. If i truncate the table and run the same procedure everything is fine. Tables all have same index on 4 columns and the columns being added are not indexed because of the stupid hoops we have to jump thru to pre-pivot data for our reporting package.

ClickOnce Path Names Are Too Long For SQL Server Express Identifiers

My application doesn't include the .mdf and .ldf files, rather it creates the database the first time the application is run using a script that is included in the build. CREATE DATABASE [C:Documents and SettingsxxxxxLocal SettingsApps2.0DataPQCK6EXN.5KGAW630RPT.VGOifie..tion_014028c05b1d6ec6_0001.0002_0e86966f19503c89DataiFieldMobile.mdf] ON PRIMARY

END

Here's the error:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException "The identifier that starts with 'C:Documents and SettingsxxxxxxLocal SettingsApps2.0DataPQCK6EXN.5KGAW630RPT.VGOifie..tion_014028c05b1d6ec6_0001.00' is too long. Maximum length is 128."

SQL Server 2008 :: Store Long Values To Be Used In (IN) Statement In Separate Table?

Jul 14, 2015

I have several reports that are looking for a code within a certain set of codes or ranges. The specific list of codes to be including is determined by the end user. Currently my "IN" statement can be a hundred lines, listing several ranges, lists of specific codes, etc. I am constantly getting asked what codes does it include, is this code included, etc. Sometimes they'll give me a printed 10 page list of codes and want me to compare to what I have included in the report. Not ideal in the slightest.

What I'd like to do is have a table or a file of some kind somewhere where the end user can view the codes contained, add new ones, and delete ones they no longer want. Then I'd like to be able to just reference that file in my IN statement. Leaving the responsibility of listing the correct codes on them.

Long Memory Grant Queue Waits In SQL Server Express SP2 Causes Slow Queries

Sep 10, 2007

I have a 2GHZ cpu with 1GB of RAM. I occassionally see very slow (long) queries against a local SQL Server 2005 Express (SP2) database. The issue occurs against different SQL Queries, but all queries are rather basic select statements Perfmon shows that the SQL Server counter for the "MEMORY GRANT QUEUE WAIT Avg MS" gets extremely high (25000+ ms). Perfmon also also shows that PAGING is not occuring, and the system is not under unsual stress. The problem is not reproducible with MSDE.

Has anyone seen this issue, or have any recommendations for a next course of action?

Anything That You Find In SQL Object Scripts, You Can Also Find Them In System Tables?

Jul 26, 2005

I tried all the INFORMATION_SCHEMA on SQL 2000 andI see that the system tables hold pretty much everything I aminterested in: Objects names (columns, functions, stored procedures, ...)stored procedure statements in syscomments table. My questions are:If you script your whole database everything you end up havingin the text sql scripts, are those also located in the system tables? That means i could simply read those system tables to get any informationI would normally look in the sql script files? Can i quickly generate a SQL statement of all the indexes on my database?I read many places that Microsoftsays not to modify anything in those tables and not query them since theirstructure might change in future SQL versions. Is it safe to use and rely the system tables?I basically want to do at least fetching of information i want from thesystem tables rather than the SQL script files.I also want to know if it's pretty safe for me to make changes in thesetables. Can i rename an object name for example an Index name, a Stored Procedurename? Can i add a new column in the syscolumns table for a user table?Thank you

Trouble is, now all of the threads in the activity monitor for the backup show 'suspended' and the backup appears to be not doing anything.

Cannot Install SQL Server Express On Vista Ultimate - Cannot Find MS SQL Server Native Client

Apr 5, 2007

I am trying to install SQL Server Express - (the non ADV version) and get the following error.

"An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli_x64.msi'".

I have 64 bit Vista Ultimate running on an HP dv9000.

I am using the download from the bottom of the download page for SSX where it says 64 bit version.

Prior to this I got the. "64-bit ASP.net is registered. Required 32-bit ASP.NET to install Microsoft Reporting services 2005(32-bit)." messagd during the pre-install scan. From what I gather in the posts, the reporting issue is different from my installation package problem.

I have been trying to prove a point to friends about how far you can go with SSX but am having no luck installing it. This whole process took 1 hour in XP but I've been stymied for 2 days.

I would appreciate being pointed at the right downloads for what seems to be a simple install.

Upgraded To SQL Server 2005. Updates No Longer Work. Error Could Not Find Server 'DEVDB' In Sysservers. Execute Sp_addlinkedse

Feb 28, 2006

Hello!

We just upgraded to SQL Server 2005 from SQL Server 2000. The DB was backed up using Enterprise Manager and restored with SQL Server Management Studio Express CTP. Everything went as expected (no errors, warnings, or any other indicator of problems).

The DB resides in a DB Server (Server1) and the application we are running is a Client/Server system where the AppServer resides on Server2.

During the application's operation all read, create, and delete transactions work fine but no update works. When viewing details in Trace Log I see this message after attempting any update:

Could not find server 'Server1' in sysservers. Execute sp_addlinkedserver to add the server to sysservers. (7202)
