I Want To Have A Live Link To Data From SQL Server

Jun 27, 2005

This is a bit confusing but here goes: I need to access data in SAP via OLE DB. I can't go direct to the back end database (Oracle), we have to use RFC or BAPI calls to access the SAP data. That's part works, we have a DLL that accesses the SAP data we need.

Does Link In Subscription Point To Live Or Snapshot?

Mar 19, 2007

This should be an easy one...

You get an email that contains a link to a report. The email was sent automatically as part of a subscription.

Does that link point to a snapshot that was taken when the report was run, or does clicking the link cause the report to re-run altogether?

Thanks,
Dan

Want To Link SQL Server DB To MS Exchange E-Mail-Address Data

Mar 1, 2002

Hi all,
I'd like to link a SQL Server database / table to Microsoft Exchange Server E-Mail-Address data, for an Employee Directory project.

I've read a little about "Web Store", a little about ExOLEDB, but I've come across nothing along practical lines. I.e., I still don't know where to begin!

For example the "Web Store" should be created on the SQL server, but how do you create it? Any insights will be greatly appreciated.

Unable To See Data From Oracle Client Through SQL Link Server

Feb 5, 2007

Hello,

I was hoping someone had this problem and has a solution... :)

Some background info:

SQL 2005 Enterprise x64

Windows 2003 R2 x64 Enterprise (clustered)

Oracle client 10.2.0.3 (latest as of 2/2/07)

The issue I'm having is I have a link server setup within SQL 2005 connecting to a Oracle 8 database server. The Oracle client I'm using is 10.2.0.3 (latest version from Oracle). From the SQL 2005 server I'm able to query the remote oracle server through the link server I had setup if I query the table directly. If I perform a query to a view on the Oracle server I'm able to see the colum names, but not the data. This only happens when I'm using the Oracle client, if I use the MS client for Oracle it works fine OR if I use SQL Plus.

Now, you're probally asking, why not just use MS's driver... Well, I would If I could, but Microsoft hasn't provided a 64 bit driver for Oracle which I need to create the link server in SQL.

Any help would be appreciated.

Edit Live Sql Data?

Mar 31, 2006

I have a sql express database with a couple tables of information. I have a user modifying one of these tables with a data access page using Office Web Controls.

To backtrack a bit, the sql db used to be an access db. The same user modifying the data the same way. I also had a asp page making odbc calls to the access db to lookup information. But if the data access page was open, the odbc page would error. So i moved the data to sql.

Now, I'm getting ready to setup an application to make odbc calls to the sql db. I still want the user to modify the data using the DAP. Should I allow the user to modify the live data used for the app or should I make a copy of the data everytime its updated?

How To Restrict Editing Of SQL Server 2005 Data Via ODBC Link?

Apr 25, 2007

I have a sql server 2005 database with Delphi 2006 in the front end and for querrying and reporting we use MS Access 2003 by connecting to this database via ODBC connection. I recently found out that the SQL Server 2005 data connected thus can be edited (updated) from MS Access. I do not want end users to modify/update the SQL Server 2005 data from MS Access while I also want them to have the ability to insert/update/delete rights using the appropriate application interface. For now, I am handling this by creating a user id that is not permitted to update, insert and delete and using the same account in the ODBC. Is there a way in SQL Server 2005 you can control insert/update/delete rights for all users that will be applicable only in the ODBC mode?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Real Time Live Data On A Windows Application .NET 2.0

Jan 10, 2006

I want to build a windows application in Visual Studio 2005 that grabs some data from a SQL DB and displays it in a gridview. That is easy and I already have it done, but I also want to know how to show this data in real-time. For example: right now we have a application that pulls some login information for all the users and displays their phone extension, their name, and their status. They can change their status by clicking on some radios below the datagrid and on change it updates the data and then posts back. However, I dont know how the guy who did it made it so that these local changes are automatically shown on everyone elses computers around the office. In other words, they are shown the live data as it changes, without having to refresh it or anything. How would I go about doing this or does anyone have any places/resources that could help me accomplish this task. Thanks.
Oh and the guy who wrote this is no longer working here and he deleted the source code so i cant look at it.

Generating Overnight Data Vs Live - Suggestions Needed.

Jul 20, 2005

We have an MIS system which has approx 100 reports. Each of thesereports can take up to several minutes to run due to the complexity ofthe queries (hundreds of lines each in most cases). Each report can berun by many users, so in effect we have a slow system.I want to seperate the complex part of the queries into a process thatis generated each night. Then the reports will only have to querypre-formatted data with minimal parameters as the hard part will havebeen completed for the users when they are not in. Ideally we willgenerate (stored procedure possibly) a set of data for each report andhold this on the server. We can then query with simpler parameterssuch as by date and get the data back quite quickly. The whole process of how we obtain the data is very complex. There arevarious views which gather data from the back office system. These arevery complex and when queries are run against them including othertables to bring in more data, it gets nicely complicated. The only problem is that the users want to have access to LIVE datafrom the back office system, specifically the Sales team who want toaccess this remotely. My method only allows for data from the nightbefore, so is there an option available to me which will allow me todo this ? The queries can't be improved on an awful lot, so they willtake as long as they take. The idea of running them once is the onlyway I can see to improve the performance in any significant way.True I could just let them carry on as they are and let them sufferwith the performance on live data, but I'd like to do something toimprove the situation for them.Any advice would be appreciated.ThanksRyan

Transact SQL :: Replicating / Synching Data Between Two Tables On Same Database With Live Transactions

Oct 7, 2015

Client is running X- version of application and corresponding database size is huge. Now client's vendor is releasing Y-version of same application with many database schema changes (like new tables added, new columns added, renamed existing columns and etc) To upgrade to the Y-version, vendor is suggesting to my client that down the system and do the upgrade for application/database to Y-version. We are sure that this process will take days together to upgrade to the Y-version. My client is not ready to down the system for that long. So we are trying to find the solution with minimal down time. The approach we are thinking is,

1) Create the replicated database to another server (server2) from production server(server1) using golden gate with X-version

2) Create new tables/schema updated tables from Y-version database on same server1. Here for Updated schema tables we are planning to use the name <table_name_Y_version> as the same table name exists in X-version.

3)With above 2 steps, golden gate replicate the changes from production to server1 and server1 will have the new Y-version table schema (with different concatenate name ' _Y_version'). BTW , there is no affect for the production

4) At this stage we are planning to find best approach, to fill the '<table_name>_Y_version' from X-version tables. two challenges here a) all data needs to be moved to Y-version tables b) they have to sync data in real time.

we thought of going to

a) ssis package to pump the data to Y-version tables, but real time data will not sync.

b) trigger based technique, previous experience said, lot of load

c) thinking about sql replication.

Updates To Live Web Server

May 30, 2006

I'm developing a web app using ASP.NET and SQL Server 2005 Express. So far it's all been on my local computer, it hasn't gone live yet, so if I need to add a column to a table or make some other schema change I just do it right in Visual Studio, nice and simple. If I have to delete all the old content and start over, no problem. When I deploy it to a staging server I just overwrite the existing file with my new one, losing its data in the process. But soon enough I'll be deploying this to a public web server, there will be real live data in the db, people using it when I need to make updates.

What are some common strategies for updating the schema of a database on a live server?

It's obvious that when I need to update the db I'll have to shut down the site temporarily. But my biggest question is how to keep the existing data from the live db? I obviously can't overwrite it with my local copy. I want to overwrite its schema, without touching its data. How's that done?

Thanks for some advice!

Nate

Developer Environment Vs. Live Server

Aug 19, 2007

I am experiencing a situation where certain functions work perfectly when I run it on my local machine under MVS, but when I upload it to the server, then it does not?!
Here is an example:
I am using a drop down box (in a FormView) that is databound in an online submission form. When I run the application in MVS, then I can edit the records by opening the form, and selection the new value in the drop down list. The new value is then also saved to the database when I hit the update button. When I upload the code to the server, then the drop down list shows the correct information (so the databinding to the control seem to work correctly), but the new value is not saved to the database.
Here is the code for the drop down list:
"DropDownList1" runat="server" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource3"DataTextField="UserName" DataValueField="UserId" SelectedValue='<%# Bind("UserId") %>'CssClass="text">"SqlDataSource3" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:LocalSqlServer %>"SelectCommand="SELECT [UserName], [UserId] FROM [vw_aspnet_Users] ORDER BY [UserName]"> Here is the code updating the database with the record (I have removed some records as well as the Insert and Delete parts):
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:tourism_connect1 %>"UpdateCommand="UPDATE Resorts SET typeid = @typeid, destrictid = @destrictid, UserId = @UserId, WHERE (resortid = @resortid)"OnInserted="SqlDataSource1_Inserted">
<UpdateParameters><asp:Parameter Name="typeid" /><asp:Parameter Name="destrictid" /><asp:Parameter Name="UserId" /><asp:Parameter Name="resortid" /></UpdateParameters></asp:SqlDataSource>
What I can mention further, is that if I connect to the database that is on the live server (so the application runs in MVS on my local machine, but it then retrieves the info from the online database), then it also works fine. It is just giving this issue when the online application is trying to update the values.
There is also no errors during the process.
I will appreciate any advise on how to overcome this, as I really do not know where to look anymore...
Thanks in advance!
Regards
Jan

Both has SQL server 2005 running and has visual studio 2005
Currently about 25 SSIS packages are executed from the development server transferring data on Live server TWD1...these ETL process is called from development server but executed on live server.
Now the problem is when i call these packages from the shared folder from live server it crashes.....i need to changes something to shift the whole package to the live server..and execute on live server itself instead of recreating the whole 25 process from scratch.....also i use optimize for many tables ..and run in a single trancastion....so how can i see the mappings of source and destination tables.

Please let me know the process how i can achieve this.

Now though that I’ve copied the web site over, when I try to log in I get the error:

Obviously its some sort of configuration issue, but I don’t know what.
What do I have to change to make this work from a test machine to a live server?

Transferring Database From Local To Live Server

Feb 5, 2008

Hi,Ive been building a project on a local server and now need to transfer the files and database over to the live server. I have managed to transfer the files quite easily, however I am having a few problems transferring the database using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. When I try importing data to the live database, all the data and tables are brought across however some of the values for the fields are lost. For example all the fields which had a primary key no longer have one, and all the set default values for the fields are also lost. Ive been considering just going through every table in the database and re-entering the correct values for the fields, but this seems a bit time consuming and I'm also concerned about possible errors which could arise as there will be an inconsistency.Another method I tried was copying the SQL query across which created all the tables and the correct values for the fields. However when I tried to import the data an error was produced as you cannot import data into a table which has read only fields etc..Does anyone know a solution? Thanks for your time.

Keeping Live Server And Development Server In Sync

Aug 17, 2007

Hi,

Im fairly new to this so apologies if Ive put this in the wrong place.

I have just rented out server for a new asp.net site. Ive been developing the site on my local machine and the database in Sql Enterprise. Ive recently put a copy of the site on the live server and got everything configured.

However everytime I make a change to my local database, or add values into my look up tables I have to go do the same on the live server and its proving a bit of a pain in the ass, so Im guessing there has got to be a much smarter way of doing this. I dont want (if possible) to open up the live sql server to allow remote connections, but if thats what neccesary so be it.

So my question is basically what are my options for keeping my live server up to date with my development server. As I add new features on my local server, should i be saving sql scripts of all the changes I make?

All opinions much appreciated.

Access2003 Cannot Link (but Excel2003 Can Link) To Tables In Access97 Database

Feb 20, 2008

I have created an Access2003 project (existing data) that links to external data. First I connected to a SQL Server 2000 database. Success. Then I tried to set up a Transact SQL data connection to a legacy MDW-secured Access97 database. (A third-party VB6 application goes against it, and we don't have the source code, so we cannot upgrade it.)

The Transact SQL link tests OK but I cannot select any of the tables or queries from the list presented. However, with the same credentials, I can use these same objects in Excel 2003.

When setting up the link in Access2003, I specify JET 4.0 OLE DB Provider, I enter the MDW file on the All tab, a username and a password on the Connection tab where I browse to the MDB file, and specify Shared Deny None on the Advanced tab. When I test the connection, it tests OK ("Test connection succeeded"). Yet on the "Select the Database and Table/Cube which contains the data you want" dialog, "(Default)" appears in the grayed-out dropdown. Then, beneath that dropdown, there is a grid with Name and Description columns. The grid contains query names but the grid is not enabled. The list of queries is this table is grayed out. Neither of the scrollbars works.

BUT... if I use the SAME username and password in Excel2003, and specify the same MDW, there is no problem working with these same database objects in the legacy Access97 database. WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT THE WIZARD IN EXCEL THAT ALLOWS IT TO SUCCEED AND THE WIZARD IN ACCESS THAT CAUSES IT TO FAIL HERE? In Excel, the list of available providers says Microsoft Access Driver, not JET 4.0 OLE DB Provider.

Thanks

Cannot Link To SQL Tables Using ODBC Link Table In Access 2003

Feb 3, 2006

When trying to link to an SQL table in Access 2003, the software appears to be malfunctioning.

The sequence of events is File - Get External Data - Link Tables - Files of Type: ODBC Databases().

The Problem: On two of my computers, the select data source window does not pop up, preventing me from linking to any ODBC data source.

Observations: This function has worked normally in the recent past and works on other computers running Access 2003. One difference between the computers working and non-working computers is Norton Antivirus 2006 (recent upgrade).

Has anyone experienced anything like this? What's going on?

Microsoft Data Link Error

Nov 27, 2006

A test installation script I ran on my dev rig seems to have broken the OLE DB Provider for Sql Server. The uninstall must have deleted a DLL or unregistered a lib. When I try to connect to a SQL database from this machine now get the following error:

==

Microsoft Data Link Error

Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. Unspecified error.

==

It is not the connection string because this was working fine prior to me running the test installation script.

Can you give advice on how to repair the SQL Server data provider for WinXP SP2?

I have tried to re-install MDAC 2.8 with no success due SP2 diallowing this. I uninstalled SP2 and re-installed MDAC 2.8 but the problem remains.

I'm all out of ideas, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
