I Want To Save And Work With .sdf File On Premanent Storage Without Degrading Performance...
May 5, 2008
In my pocket pc inventory application i keep database .sdf file in My Documents. This gives me good performance. But the problem is that sometime my pocket pc hangs and some users cold boot the device and everything is lost.
I tried with keeping my .sdf file on SD card. This way data is there even after cold reboot, but the preformance is very bad. it takes some seconds just to insert only one record. Also if connection is not closed properly due to any reason, the database file is corrupted.
Can anyone tell me if there is a way to persist my .sdf file even after cold reboot without degrading the performance?
Regards.

We have an application with a SQL Server 2000 back end that is fairlydatabase intensive -- lots of fairly frequent queries, inserts, updates-- the gamut. The application does not make use of performance hogslike cursors, but I know there are lots of ways the application couldbe made more efficient database-wise. The server code is running VB6of all things, using COM+ database interfaces. There are someclustered and non-clustered indexes defined, but I'm pretty surethere's room for improvement there as well. Some tables have grown into the millions of records in recent months, and performance of the application slowed to a crawl. Optimizing thedatabase helped a little, but not much. We know that several millionrecords in a table is a lot, but one would think that SQL Server shouldbe able to still handle that pretty well. We do have plans to archivea lot of old data, but in the meantime, we were hurting for a quickfix. So we threw hardware at the problem, and transferred the database to anew, more powerful server. The performance improvement was dramatic.Transactions were many many times faster than before. Withoutimplementing any of the other more difficult performance improvementswe have planned, we suddenly became minor heros. :-)Well, the honeymoon seems to be somewhat over. While performance isstill much better than when the database resided on our old server, performance appears to have degraded rather significantly again.Performance is also not significantly better with fewer users on oursystem. What the heck?Yes, the database continues to grow unchecked as we haven't quite gotan archive utility in place yet, but the growth is relatively gradual,so you wouldn't think that would be the issue. The database isoptimized on a weekly basis, and our web and database servers are bothrebooted monthly. Our database administrators don't seem to haveanswers, so I appeal to the experts reading this forum to maybe offersome clues.Prior to posting I did do a fair amount of research to see what peoplehave suggested in similar situations, and ran this by our databaseadmin. Here's what I can tell you from this research:- Statistics are updated weekly along with whatever else the databaseoptimization does- We do not use the "autoshrink" option for automatically shrinking logfiles- Regarding preallocating space and setting growth factors for log anddata files to minimize time spent allocating disk space, our adminsays, "We do allow database files to grow unchecked, but we do monitorgrowth and manually expand as needed. Autogrow is typically set in50MB increments or less as the amount of time it takes to expand thisamount is negligible."- Transaction logging is turned on, and data and log devices are onseparate physical disks- The database server is monitored to ensure no process is hogging allof the CPU, I/O or memory

Hello folks, first of all I really don't know how you gurus call this way ofwriting joins:SELECTA.FIELD,B.FIELDFROMTABLE_A A,TABLE_B BWHEREA.ID_FIELD = B.ID_FIELDI find this way very useful and readable. It works also with left andright Joins (using *= or =* instead of = )A friend of mine found that the inner join way (using = ) in Access ismuch more slower than using the classic INNER JOIN TABLE ON FIELDsintax. My question is: was MSSQL Server studied for using the shortway, or it is just a workaround found by someone? Is there aperformance degrade folllowing this way?TIA,tK

Hi
I am having a problem with a particular stored procedure in a database application and I have ran out of ideas as to what is the cause. When calling this stored procedure from a .Net application it typically returns results in about 0.2 seconds. 24 hours after it's creation, the procedure takes over 40 seconds to return the same results to the application. However if I call the procedure via Management Studio or Query Analyzer, the performance remains consistently fast.
It's a fairly complicated query making use of the following features:
FOR XML EXPLICIT
The ROW_NUMBER function
Input Parameters
The procedure is replicated, along with the tables that it references
The calling application is using ExecuteXMLReader to retrieve the results.
To fix the problem, I can simply run an ALTER PROCEDURE statement (without changing any of the contents of the stored procedure). However, by the next morning, the problem will have reoccurred.
Can anyone shed any light on why this is happening?
Phil

Howdy,
Can some one please explain how the storage of a huge text or ntext object ( say a string of characters 100 KB in size ) is carried out please?
With a data page maximum size of 8000 bytes, how does SQL handle the storage of such an string - it would obviously obverlap multiple rows etc.
Does the application writing it to the database have to split the object over multiple rows and manually keep track of which bit is in which row so it can be re-created later in correct sequence by adding the bits back together, or is it done some how differently?
Any help most welcome as this is a bit confusing.
Cheers,
SG.

If you have your Data, Logs, System and TempDB all in VMDK's and those VMDK's are formatted to 64K and then reside on Clustered Storage that is formatted as 4K, which is then running through a SAN controller that is reading and writing in 2MB chunks, is there value in formatting the SQL drives as 64K? Also, would it be better to format the Clustered Storage as 64K? Is this a situation in which formatting the SQL drives as 64K is becoming a moot point?

Am I right in assuming that when I have a column where all fields contain NULL, this does not increase the total data storage size if my database? Also, what kind of impact would it have on performance?
And what if I inserted "" in varchar columns? I would think the increase in size would be marginal?
The reason I'm asking is that I want to use an existing table and stored procedures for another purpose, but only need half of the columns. But it would significantly simplify application development.

How to implement distinct storage tiers on SQL Remote BLOB Storage (RBS)?
I want to use this SQL Feature to move files(images, videos, pdf files) from a database to a distinct database dedicated to RBS. Then I want to have several storage tiers, where objects will be saved and moved according access frequency. Old data will be arquived in cheap storage, but it must be always accessible if needed.
Description:
- 1st and main tier: new and frequently accessed objects stored in high performance storage;
- 2nd tier: automatically move older or less accessed objects to an inexpensive and different storage tier;
- in all cases, all objects must be accessible to all users, but accessing to archived objects(2nd tier) will be much slower;

HI, we are beginning a new project at my company and I was wondering where is the best place to save SSIS packages: file system or SqlServer. I have used other ETL products and they always create a repository on an RDBMS. Since SSIS offers us the choice of DB storage or file system, is there pros and cons of both approach? Will the deployment of our application be simpler by using Sql Server since we would onky move metadata instead of files?
Thank you for your help,
Ccote

Hello,
I am building partitiong tables, partitioning on different file groups:
the question is:
Partitioned table referred to old data that are not frequent accessed for reporting can be stored on separate location(External storage, tape and so on) or to make partitioning functioning must all file groups must be presents?
If not, how can I separate old data from current ones (still using partitioning) to reduce the size of DB?
What it is the best for storage data and easy to access it when needs arise (eg reporting): Tape, external storage, others?
Thank

According to the help for SSIS, one method of deploying an SSIS package
to a SQL Server,
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms137565.aspx, is to use the
File...Save a Copy of <package file> as... menu option.
I don't have that menu option at all. And yes, the package is in
focus. My save menu options are simply; Save Selected, Save
<package file> As... and Save All.
I am using Version 9.00.1399.00 of the SSIS Designer.
At one time I did have the Management Studio's CTP installed.
However it was uninstalled before installing the tools from the
Standard Edition. (it would seem like not completely however)
Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx much.
p.s. Almost forgot to mention... I am already aware of using the
DTSInstall utility as a workaround. It should be noted, however,
that despite enabling the "CreateDeploymentUtility" property, the
DTSInstall.exe is not copied to the binDeployment directory.

Hello,
We have an existing OLD System in SQL Server 2000 DTS Packages.
The Whole application runs on DTS.
There are several Packages which are called from a Master Package. Each Child packages have their own Global Variables. Most of them are the File Location variables to have the Source Location of the Input Data, mainly from the Excel Files.
Now, even if the Global Variables are there to change whenever they want to change the Locations of the Files, they have to goto each child package and change the variable themselves.
To resolve this issue, they want a configuration File (INI) / Table which would store those Variables. My thought is to read from that File/Table and Update all the packages' global variables through an ActiveX Script as the First Step of the Master package. That would eliminate the need of changing anything in the existing System.
But the Problem is the management (PM / DBAs / Team members) have different views to store the Configuration data.
1. Some wants it into a Different Database, having one table for this application so in future they can also add another table for some other application.
2. Some wants to store it in a Table in the Same Database of this Application.
3. Some wants to save it as a INI file.
As i'm the one who's going to really implement it, they have asked me to research for a best solution out there.
so I request to help me to decide which is a good solution and why.
Best Regards,
Deepak

I have a group of about 5 servers (which will likely grow toabout 25 in the near future) with their names listed in a table in a database on one of the servers. I want to query all servers in that table using the following query to pull the storage drive, database name, created date, age and size of the databases for each server listed in the table:
SELECT left(mf.Physical_Name,2) AS Storage_Drive,
DB_NAME(mf.database_id) AS DatabaseName,
db.create_Date,
DateDiff(day, db.create_date, getDate()) Age,
sum((mf.size*8))/1024 SizeMB
[Code] ...
How would I best accomplish this if I want to implement it using a TSQL procedure?

*Do the enduser have to install SQL Server Express or any addition when I'm programming for the .Net Framework 3.5?

I have a asp.net application where i can choose to save any file(could be jpg or dat or txt or xml etc etc) into a table. So far,i've manage to save it into an SQL server table in a column(set to Image datatype). But when i get the data from the table, put it into a byte array and recreate it.I notice that the files can be recreated correctly if they are of type .txt files. But jpg files can't be recreated and trying to open the jpg files gives an error.I don't think it is the file saving that is the problem since any files can be save.Rather it is the file recreating that is the problem. Can anyone help?

Hi guys,
I want to update a PDF file and store it in the MSSQL database. (I know it is better if I save the file on server and just store the link to it, but I have to store the file on the database "Project Requirements")
I would probably use FileUpload control to upload the file. but would I upload it to server temporarly and then save it or would I just upload it to DB.
I appreciate your help and suggestions and any tips & tricks or issue that I have to consider.
