First Statement From Access To SQL
May 5, 2004I'm trying to convert this from Access to SQL:
SELECT ORDER_DETAIL.ORDER_NUMBER, Substring([ITEM_NUMBER],2,7) AS ITEMNO, First(ORDER_DETAIL.ITEM_DESC) AS FirstOfITEM_DESC
FROM ORDER_DETAIL
But it won't accept the First statement, specifically "First" is not recognized.
First(ORDER_DETAIL.ITEM_DESC) AS FirstOfITEM_DESC
Does anyone know a way around?

SQL Between Dates Statement In Access Database
Apr 8, 2005I have following SQL statement which I run on an Access database. ( Program written in VB.NET )

SELECT c.*
FROM Communications AS c
WHERE CommDate Between #1/4/2005# And #5/4/2005#;

I've put dummy values in the database for dates between 1st and 8th of april... And running this query suprisingly gives back ALL rows in the table... Also the entries for the 6th, 7th and 8th of april... In fact it just gives back the WHOLE table, no matter which values I add...
If I use '1/4/2005' (not with #) then I get an error back.
Anybody an Idea how to make a BETWEEN statement work in an access database?

this code gives me the error "Invalid attempt to FieldCount when reader is closed"
- I think this is because the 'using' statment above,is closing the connection as well as datareader,so its not available in the calling function
-however if i remove the 'using' statment and change the line SqlDataReader rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader(CommandBehaviour.closeConnection) instead ;It works fine.Why?Is it because CommandBehaviour.closeConnection closes the connection but datareader is OPEN and still available to the function?If so,do i need to close the reader explicitly in my function?..i never did it and it works fine..
- i like to use 'using' statement ..it is clean and makes sure resource disposal is properly taken care of.But i would still like to use datareader and not dataset.Also i want to handle all the database related task such as opening,closing of connection,datareader in a class and not in my calling function.
Whats the best way to handle all this concern.

I am trying to write a Transact-SQL statement and am having no success. I have a customers table that has some duplicate Customer Numbers in it, however the records do have a unique Reference Number. I am trying select all records that match a list of Customer Numbers but if there are more than 1 matching Customer Number I only want the one with the largest Reference Number.
My BASIC Select Statement is:
SELECT Cust_Ref_No, Customer_No, Customer_Name, Address1,
Address2, Suburb, State, Postcode, Phone
FROM Customers
WHERE Customer_No IN
(SELECT Customer_No FROM temp_Customers)
Much to my HORROR I found that what I am trying to do is simple in MS Access using the “First” Function – Such as below:
SELECT First(Cust_Ref_No) AS Cust_Ref_No, Customer_No
FROM Customers
GROUP BY Customer_No
ORDER BY First(Cust_Ref_No), Customer_No;
There appears to be no “First” Function in Transact-SQL. Is someone able to show me how to achieve the same results in Transact-SQL as I can get with MS Access (I’d HATE to think that MS Access has more functionality in querying data than SQL Server in any way at all)?
P.S. I really need to run the select statement as one step rather than splitting it up into parts.

HOW? Access Results Of Computed SQL Statement In A Data Flow
Apr 24, 2007The SQL computed is complex enough that I can't see a way to make it a parameterized query. The obvious approach seems to be to compute the SQL in a CONTROL FLOW SCRIPT TASK and then use it to load a variable to set the VARIABLE SOURCE of a CONTROL FLOW EXECUTE SQL TASK.
I see that I can return a resultset to a variable.
But getting the rows of the results into a dataflow is not obvious. I have heard mentione that a Derived Column can do this. I can see using a dummy SCRIPT COMPONENT as DATA SOURCE with nothing in it to then drop into DERIVED COLUMN. But when setting up DERIVED COLUMN I don't see how to pull the columns out of the RESULTSET variable.
If it makes a difference I think the columns of the resultset will always be the same in this scenario.
Maybe this is totally the wrong approach? Any clues would be appreciated.

When the delete occurs, all the insert statements got blocked and waits till the delete statement to complete. May I know why the blocking occurs?Â

Data Access :: Server Rejected The Connection - Access To Selected Database Has Been Denied
Jun 10, 2015I have recently upgraded to SQL2014 on Win2012. The Access front end program works fine.
But, previously created Excel reports with built in MS Queries now fail with the above error for users with MS 2013. The queries still work for users still using MS 2007.Â
I also cannot create any new queries and get the same error message. If I log on as myself on the domain to another PC with 2007 installed it works fine, so I don't think it is anything to do with AD groups or permissions.
Multi-user Access Through A Data-access Layer/remoting Server

I've been developing desktop client-server and web apps and have used Access and SQL Server Standard most of the time.
I'm looking into using SQL CE, and had a few questions that I can't seem to get a clear picture on:
- The documentation for CE says that it supports 256 simultaneous connections and offers the Isolation levels, Transactions, Locking, etc with a 4GB DB. But most people say that CE is strictly a single-user DB and should not be used as a DB Server.
Could CE be extended for use as a multi-user DB Server by creating a custom server such as a .NET Remoting Server hosted through a Windows Service (or any other custom host) on a machine whereby the CE DB would run in-process with this server on the machine which would then be accessed by multiple users from multiple machines??
Clients PCs -> Server PC hosting Remoting Service -> ADO.NET -> SQL CE
- and further more can we use Enterprise Services (Serviced Components) to connect to SQL CE and further extend this model to offer a pure high-quality DB Server?

Seems quite doable to me, but I may be wrong..please let me know either ways

I am trying to connect through ODBC connectivity, but it will not allow me to do so. I have investigated this matter. It leads me back to the server, because as I was configuring my client side database. It kept asking for the DSN(datasource name), but I was unable to choose one because there wasn't one to choose. Which is my current dilemma, How can I do this and have it available to choose from the server to satisfy the Access database?
I went to the domain where the software resides but I don't know what steps to take? I also found an interesting piece on microsoft about Kerberos, but I can't follow along according to the instructions it has. I have Access 2003 & SQL SERVER 2005, HELP...!
Basically, this is right off the heels of the install. I setup the server without the connectivity, but it is running the current configuration.

Admin Access To SQL Without Server/domain Admin Access
Sep 6, 2007We are using Win2k3 R2 with SQL 2000 in a domain environment.
Is it possible to create a domain group to grant admin level and user level access to SQL2000/2005 without giving users server admin or domain admin access?
It has always been my impression that to have admin access to SQL that you had to at least had admin level access on the server.
Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Dec 5, 2014I've recently started working with a public sector organisation who have 4 clustered sql instances that has 80% of it's db mirrored.
Looking at the transaction log - it seems that a transaction log backup is a good idea as the log is 4x larger than the data file.But I'm not allowed access to the physical server to check onto which drive I can create the trn. No RDP, no vmware - let's be honest I'm not even allowed to launch cmd line Also the Server Manager informs me "We will need to carefully look at database backups if you guys want to start doing these backups on box, as that will break our off box backup routine (it will screw the transaction chain)."
I don't understand how backing up the transaction log could break the "transaction chain"?

Aug 30, 2006I'm trying to link SQL Server 2000 sp3 to SQL 2005 64 bit. I keep getting Error 17 sql server does not exist or access denined. I tried adding remote user mapping and chaning the linked server properties to "Be made using this security context" without any success.
Any help is appreciated.
