INSERT Statement Conflicted With COLUMN FOREIGN KEY SAME TABLE Constraint
Aug 1, 2006
For some reason, I'm getting this error, even without the DBCC Check:
INSERT statement conflicted with COLUMN FOREIGN KEY SAME TABLE constraint 'Category_Category_FK1'. The conflict occurred in database 'mydb', table 'Category', column 'CategoryID'.
The statement has been terminated.
The very first insert fails...it was working fine before:
/* Finally, insert the rest and match on the Parent
Category Name based on the CategoryStaging table
*/
WHILE (@@ROWCOUNT <> 0)
BEGIN
INSERT INTO Category
(ParentCategoryID, [Name], [Description], DisplayOrder, DisplayInExplorer, Keywords, Active, CreateDate, CreateUserID, UpdateDate, UpdateUserID)
SELECT c.CategoryID, s.CategoryName, '', 1, 1, '', 1, GETDATE(), 1, GETDATE(), 1
FROM Category c INNER JOIN CategoriesStaging s ON c.[Name] = s.ParentCategoryName
WHERE NOT EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM Category c WHERE s.[CategoryName] = c.[Name])
AND s.CategoryName <> 'All'
Here's the schema:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Category](
[CategoryID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[ParentCategoryID] [int] NULL,

Hi there, I have a stored procedure which i pass a number of parameters into. One of these parameters is staffNo (only passed this in because i couldn't execute the query without it). The thing is this field can be Null, but when trying to pass null into it it comes up with an Foreign Key conflict. staffNo is a foreign key within the table i'm inserting the data into. This is the error i get: "INSERT statement conflicted with COLUMN FOREIGN KEY constraint 'PropStaffFK'. The conflict occurred in database 'DewMountain', table 'TblStaff', column 'staffNo'. The statement has been terminated. The 'PropertyAdvert' procedure attempted to return a status of NULL, which is not allowed. A status of 0 will be returned instead. "
Does anyone know of away around this? how to pass a null value to the stored procedure without it causing this error. Thank you Melanie
Hello Friends How are you?? Friends i am getting problem in SQL Server 2005. I am deployng web application on production server as well as Databse also. In production server i inserted new field in all tables which is rowguid and its type is uniqueidentifier. The default binding for this field is newsequentialid(). I get this error when inserting data..The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint FK_Participant_ Log_BiometricInstance_ Participant_ Activities". The conflict occurred in database "ProvantCustomerPortal", table "dbo.Activities", column 'Id'.The statement has been terminated.
My query looks like this :

Please excuse the rookie question, but I am not sure how to get around this error.
"The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "FK_users_editprofile". The conflict occurred in database "MyDB", table "dbo.editprofile", column 'userid'. The statement has been terminated."
I encountered the error when running a series of test INSERT statements after creating a bunch of FK/PK relationships between the parent table DBO.USERS and several child tables. The one that this error complains about is DBO.EDITPROFILE.

Hello I have a problem with setting relations properly when inserting data using adonet. Already have searched for a solutions, still not finding a mistake... Here's the sql management studio diagram :
and that causes (at line 67):"The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "FK_Question_SurveyTemplate". I am getting this error occasionally on my multi-user web app with the data stored in SQL Server. The key is an identity field incremented by 1 - like Access autonumber. It seems that when two people are writing to the table at the same time they try and use the same key. I didn't think this could happen in sql server ?
It is a one to many table situation and the error occurs in the one table
What is the solution please.
INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint
Hi, I am new to MS SQL Server; as I know Access, MYSQL. I made a form though which I want to insert data to SQL SERVER 2005 Database but i during submission I get the below problem, can any one help.
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e14'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The INSERT statement conflicted with the CHECK constraint "SSMA_CC$Bcast$msgHTML$disallow_zero_length". The conflict occurred in database "x485i", table "dbo.Bcast", column 'msgHTML'.
I am having 'INSERT STATEMENT CONFLICTED' error since I try to configure sql server 2005 Full Text Search for my database. Before everything was going fine but after doing some changings I mess up my all DB's. None of my database is working. The error only occur while inserting the records using web form. But I can insert directly from Management Studio interface. here is part of my error:
ERROR: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "FK_Dept_LegalLaw_Dept_LegalMinistries1". The conflict occurred in database "LegalDB", table "dbo.Dept_LegalMinistries", column 'RegID'. On my aspx Web page, I want to delete a member from database table 'tblMember', but if this MemberID is used as FK in another table, I want to display a user friendlier message like "You cannot delete this member, ....." I am using Try, Catch blocks in my Web Page.
Currently it display this message: "DELETE statement conflicted with COLUMN REFERENCE constraint 'FK_..._....' The conflict occurred in database '...', table 'tblMembers', column 'MemberID'. The statement has been terminated. "
So how should I precisely trap this error? Does anybody know what Exception is it? or what error number in SQL server?
I would like to delete a row in a table, but I get the following message :
The DELETE statement conflicted with the REFERENCE constraint "FK_cs_Users". The conflict occurred in database "mytable", table "dbo.cs_UserProfile", column 'UserID'. The statement has been terminated. (0.701 sec)
But I did this :
alter table cs_Users disable trigger ALL
delete from cs_Users where MembershipID = 'xxx'
Thank you very much for any help to get this work !
Hi all,While using ACCESS and asp for years, I have just had to move my site onto a new server and the opportunity to move my 50MB access DB to msSQL was too good an opportunity to pass up! I used the Migration tools from MS and the data migrated nicely, I can do everything that I used to be able to do on the forum, except when a new user signs up or a member tries to edit their profile, the following error message comes up: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e14' [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The UPDATE statement conflicted with the CHECK constraint "SSMA_CC$PORTAL_MEMBERS$M_ICQ$disallow_zero_length". The conflict occurred in database "DATABASENAME", table "dbo.PORTAL_MEMBERS", column 'M_ICQ'.
I have checked the database and the dbo.PORTAL_MEMBERS table and except for the autoincrement number, uname and pwrd, everything else is set to accept nulls.
I also went though and filled in everything on the form then I could update.
the same error applies when signing up - the only difference is the name of the table
I then tried to change the data straight in the table by opening it in Server Management Studio Express and got the same error if I did not fill in everything. This tells me that it is not the code, much to my relief!
So I am figuring that there is something somewhere in the DB that I have to change? could someone point me in the right direction - and as I am VERY NEW to this database system, and do not know my way around (it took me about 10 minutes to figure out how to open a table! *LOL*) very clear instructions would be appreciated.
Hello All, i have 2 files in excel which i am uploading them to a folder which is located in the root directory. then i am importing these two files into a sqldatabase. i needed some help in importing them and i got it from my previous post at http://forums.asp.net/t/1261155.aspx but now i have a problem. the import works perfectly first time but when i do it the second time i am getting an error on of the file (header). to explain clearly, what i am doing is , every time i upload a new file , i am deleting the data from the tables, so the new data can be inserted ( basically trying to achieve overwirting the existing data). now this technique works fine with the Detail table but not with the Header table. i think the reason is the header table has a primary key on OrderID and a relationship does exists between the Header and Detail. now how would i overcome this error. can some one please guide me. I am importing data from a flat, comma delimited text file. It appears to properly import all the records and then on the last record it give me the error
INSERT statement conflicted with COLUMN FOREIGN KEY constraint for 'EOR_ITE_REF_EOR'.
Then it goes on to tell me the database, table and column in which the problem occured which is the first column in the table. It looks like it doesn't like the end of the file for some reason (EOR, end of record?) so I tried deleting the last record from the file and it still does it. I do have a file that I have imported that worked so I tried copying the last record of that file and pasting it into the last record of the file I wanted but that did not work either. The ends of file that works and the file that doesn't work look the same and I can find nothing on 'EOR_ITE_REF_EOR'. Any help would be appreciated.

I am trying to update tables "Table A" & " TableB" with a new value for a particular column1. Now "TableA" contains a foreign key "FK1" defined on it and is referencing another table "Table B" containing the similar column "Column1"
Because of this constraint I was not able to update TableA and TableB. My question is
1) If i wanted to go ahead with this update, what are the possible ways?
2) If only solution is to drop the constraint. Then How do i know the definition for this particular Foreign key, i mean it may refer some columns in Table B. I wanted to know the complete definition of it so that i can rebuild the constraint after the update. Right now i can see only the constraint name when i use sp_help TableA. But how do i know the complete reference made by this foreign key.
Here is my issue I am new to 2005 sql server, and am trying to take my old data which is exported to a txt file and import it to tables in sql. The older database is non relational, and I had made several exports for the way I want to build my tables. I built my packages fine and everything is working until I start building relationships. I remove my foreign key and the table with the primary key will get updated for the package again. I need to update the data daily into sql, and once in it will only be update from the package until the database is moved over.
It will run and update with a primary key until I add a foreign key to another database.
Here is my error when running the package when table 2 has a foreign key.
[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query "TRUNCATE TABLE [consumer].[dbo].[Client] " failed with the following error: "Cannot truncate table 'consumer.dbo.Client' because it is being referenced by a FOREIGN KEY constraint.". Am working on sql database table shifting to new database tables. Am getting the following error while truncating the tables:-

I know that TRUNCATE TABLE can be used to reset the identity counter, but it can't be used on a table referenced by a foreign key. Anybody knows how to do that? Thanks.
i have a table and i need to insert one column with data from another table. it goes something like this (although i know this is wrong, just here for a visual explaination) :
Code:

so, list_email needs the email address from the Users table. i tried messing around with inner joins but, well, here i am...
Hello I am trying to delete a row from one table and I expected it to also be removed from the subsequent child tables, linked via foreign and primary keys. However, when I tried to delete a row in the first table I saw this error: DELETE FROM [dbo].[Names_DB]WHERE [LName_Name]=N'andrews' Error: Query(1/1) DELETE statement conflicted with COLUMN REFERENCE constraint 'FK_LName_Name'. The conflict occurred in database 'MainDB', table 'Category_A', column 'LName_Name'. I went to the very last table in the sequence and I was able to delete the row without problems, but it did not effect any of the other tables. Please advise. I need to make many changes in these tables, should I use a trigger instead, if so what is the code to trigger each table? I am new to triggers. Thanks Regards Lynn
Cannot find an answer to this in previous posting, though there are similar topics.
My primary key "ID" requires a value (is not nullable), and not explictly providing it with one when I update a new record gives the following error:
Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'ID', table 'AdClub.mediaq.News'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'ID', table 'AdClub.mediaq.News'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.
However, trying to stuff that field with a recordCount+1 value (or any value), I get this error:
Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'Primary Key'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'News'. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'Primary Key'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'News'.
Cannot figure this one out. The value I'm providing for that field is known to be unique, but the SQL Server spits it out each time.
Is there a way to have the ID primary field automatically update with a new value when a new record is generated? This is how I used to do it in Access, but cannot find a similar feature in SQL Server. I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but right now I'm stuck in this "Catch-22" situation.
I need to delete records from a table (Table1) which has a foreign key column in a related table (Table2).
Table1 columns are: table1Id; Name. Table2 columns include Table2.table1Id which is the foreign key to Table1.
What is the syntax to delete records from Table1 using Table1.Name='some name' and remove any records in Table2 that have Table2.table1Id equal to Table1.table1Id?
i'm using sql express, management studio express and a visual web developer starter kit. i have 4 tables: items; categories; categorization; old_items the old_items table has both the item id and category fields in it, the new db has them separated: items.id; categories.id; categorization.itemId, categorizaton.parentCategoryId, both of which are foreign keys. i need to get the old_item.id and old_item.category values into the new categorization table but it keeps choking on the foreign keys and i can't get past it. as far as i've been able to figure out so far, i need to turn off the foreign keys to do the insert but i'm not sure and i haven't been able to find any sql query examples that demonstrate it or explain it well enough for my n00b self. i've read http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/10cetyt6.aspx, "How to: Disable Foreign Key Constraints with INSERT and UPDATE Statements" but i don't get how that affects it, it seems like one of the other options would actually disable them. can anyone help? i've been trying all the permutations of queries i can think of and not getting it. thanks.
I've been working as web dev for quite sometime now but there are still few things that i would like to clarify. Hope you guys can shed lights.
I currently have several tables and all this tables are having some 1 to many relationships. I know that how i insert value into my tables are very inefficient. I do it in this manner.. -> Insert a value in TableA -> Query the latest ID that i have inserted in Table A then -> Insert this value in TableB. And so on and so forth.
I believe there is an efficient way to to do this but i'm not sure how? Could anyone shed me a light on this matter?
In a special request run, I need to update locker and lock tables in a sql server 2012 database, I have the following 2 table definitiions:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Locker]( [lockerID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [schoolID] [int] NOT NULL, [number] [varchar](10) NOT NULL, [lockID] [int] NULL CONSTRAINT [PK_Locker] PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED
[code]....
The locker table is the main table and the lock table is the secondary table. I need to add 500 new locker numbers that the user has given to me to place in the locker table and is uniquely defined by LockerID. I also need to add 500 new rows to the corresponding lock table that is uniquely defined in the lock table and identified by the lockid.
Since lockid is a key value in the lock table and is uniquely defined in the locker table, I would like to know how to update the lock table with the 500 new rows. I would then like to take value of lockid (from lock table for the 500 new rows that were created) and uniquely place those 500 lockids uniquely into the 500 rows that were created for the lock table.
I have sql that looks like the following so far:
declare @SchoolID int = 999 insert into test.dbo.Locker ( [schoolID], [number]) select distinct LKR.schoolID, A.lockerNumber FROM [InputTable] A JOIN test.dbo.School SCH ON A.schoolnumber = SCH.type and A.schoolnumber = @SchoolNumber JOIN test.dbo.Locker LKR ON SCH.schoolID = LKR.schoolID AND A.lockerNumber not in (select number from test.dbo.Locker where schoolID = @SchoolID) order by LKR.schoolID, A.lockerNumber
I am not certain how to complete the rest of the task of placing lockerid uniquely into lock and locker tables?

I am not certain how to complete the rest of the task of placing lockerid uniquely into lock and locker tables? Thus can you either modify the sql that I just listed above and/or come up with some new sql that will show me how to accomplish my goal?
Is it possible to create a unique constraint to a column from anothertable? For example:tb_current:current_names--------------aaabbbtb_new:new_name--------cccNow I want to create a constraint on tb_new.new_name to be unique withrespect to tb_current.current_names. However, tb_new.new_name shouldnot be unique to itself. So I should not be able to insert 'aaa' totb_new.new_name. But I should be able to insert 'ccc' totb_new.new_name.Here's the script to reproduce this example:create table tb_current(current_names varchar(10))create table tb_new(new_name varchar(10))insert tb_current values ('aaa')insert tb_current values ('bbb')insert tb_new values ('ccc')select * from tb_currentselect * from tb_newinsert tb_new values ('aaa') -- this should NOT be allowedinsert tb_new values ('ccc') -- this should be allowed
