Configured Child Packages - Invoke Without Waiting For Package Completion?

Apr 4, 2007

I want to set multiple child packages running without waiting for them to complete in a parent SSIS package. The catch is that I will be running the same child package in multiple threads with different configuration variables set. I want to drive the config variables for the child packages via a SQL Server table, and start the execution of each child package from within a for-loop container.

Here's what I've tried, and why it didn't work:

1) Execute package task. Didn't work: Waits for the child package to complete before moving to the next step.

2) Kicking off the package via the "sp_start_job" stored proc in the msdn db. Didn't work: Can't specify config variable values.

3) Using the DTExec command line prompt. Didn't work: Same issue as 1). Waits for the package to complete.

Anything I'm missing? Any ideas on how to accomplish this?

DataStage Vs SSIS

Jun 16, 2006

Hi,

We are in a process of migrating a process running in Ascential Data Stage to SSIS. The database server is ORACLE 9i.

We need samples/guide on the following datastage equivalent features.

1. Calling a function/script/routine from task's Data Flow transformer as Before/After Stage event.
2. Complex XML parsing and loading into sequential files.
3. Creating a batch & based on the condition calling the tasks. For example, if condition=YES then call task 'A' or call task 'B'.
4. Any shared container concept. (A portion of activity will be used by most of the tasks)
5. In the Data Flow Destination, is we have feature like insert new row or update existing row, clear the table and insert etc.,
6. Error log and process log on each task execution.

Could you please provide driver details to use all the SSIS stages to connect to Oracle 9i.

Temporary Storage - From DataStage To SSIS

Jul 27, 2006

I am new to the SQL Server platform - coming from a Solaris/Informix/DataStage environment. In DataStage there is a function called a "Hash" file that acts as a temporary holding place for data. This hash file can be used to (1) perform lookups on tables and (2) perform calculations and manipulations before the data is populated into the destination (i.e table, flat file, etc.) Also by using this hash file, the processing time is faster.

Is there such a function within SSIS that can temporarily store the data and allow transformations before it is loaded into the destination?

Thanks in advance.

Connecting To Oracle 9i Server Using ODBC From An SSIS Package

Sep 7, 2006

I am trying to connect to a Oracle 9i Server to execute a sql task, but the connection when tested seems to fail with the following error from the Integration Services Project:

Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. ERROR [NA000][Microsoft][ODBC driver for Oracle][Oracle]ORA-12541: TNS:no listener

ERROR[IM006][Microsoft ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed

ERROR[0100][Microsoft ODBC Driver Manager] The driver does not support the version of ODBC behavior that the application requested (see SQLSetEnvAttr).

The connection was configured and tested from Oracle's SQLPlus session. Please note that the port that the TNS Server is listening is not the default. Is there somewhere I can specify the port in the SSIS connection manager to resolve the issue.

I have tried OLEDB connection and that does not work either.

Any inputs will be appreciated.

Calling Oracle Package And Select Command Together In SSIS

Jan 14, 2008

hi,

Below are 2 oracle commands

1. (calls an oracle package) - call lpaarchive.pibrdg.setlastbridgeruntime(sysdate);

2. (selects rows) - select timestamp ,

pitag ,

rtlmp from LPAARCHIVE.I_PIBRDG_BUS5MINRTLMPS

where timestamp <= (sysdate + 0.002777778)

order by TIMESTAMP ASC;
I need to execute these 2 statements together. I tried using Execute SQL task to call the package and then an OLEDB source that calls a variable with the select statement. But it does not retrieve any rows. It seems like the result of calling the package is used by the select statement to give the final rows. Could anyone please help me resolve this issue.

Notification To SQL Server 2005 Agent Job On Completion Of Oracle Package

Dec 21, 2007

Is there any built-in way of kicking off a job on SQL Server 2005 Agent whenever a package/job completes in Oracle?
Are there any (Triggers? Msft queue? Event Notification?) mechanisms to automate running a job on the SQL side?
Any article or knowledge articles would be appreciated also.

If not are there any built-in stardardized polling techniques? Or are there any timers in SSIS?
That way I can delay executing a child package until a certain record has been inserted into a control table in Oracle.
I don't want to write an inefficient for loop that blocks all other processing on the server and iterates once every second.

Thanks

Running A SSIS Package As A Job Error - With A Connection To An Oracle Database

Oct 10, 2007

Hi,

I have installed MS SQL Server 2005 and Service Pack 2 on a new Windows 32-bit environment. I also installed the 32-bit 10g client (the Administrator option). The tnsnames.ora file is configured properly and I can tnsping to the Oracle database without any issues. I have created a package in Visual Studio and it runs successfully when I execute the job manually. I saved the package to the MS SQL Server and when I log into Management Studio to create a job for this package, I receive the following error:

I have created the package and logged into the server with the same ID to set up the job. And I have set the ProtectionLevel property to "Don't Save Sensitive Data" since I know this has been an issue in the past when I tried automating the job. I've four posts regarding this error message on the MSDN forums that aren't helpful at this moment - I'm hoping that someone will have found a solution since those posts. Any suggestions are welcomed.

Deploy SSIS Package To Production Which Has A Connection To Oracle Databse

Aug 14, 2006

Hi There,

In SSIS package development environment, I was able to connect to an oracle database and pull data into my sql server database. I installed the client tools for oracle and I put an entry into the tnsnames.ora and I was able to connect.

But in production environment, if I deploy the package on sql server, I was wondering if I had to do the same job of downloading the oracle client tools onto my production machine --which creates a tnsnames.ora file to it default location and then edit it with tthe tns entry-- or is there a better way to do this--avoiding the download?

Can somebody plzz help me ?

Out Of Process SP Invoke

Dec 25, 2007

Team:

How to invoke a stored procedure "out of process", meaning i want to add it to a queue.

Reason: we have a proc that is fired real-time each time an order comes into the system and it take a few seconds and when there is plenty of order activity in the system, the process times out. I would like to essentially add this to a queue and move on and some other process will process from the queue. Is CLR call the way to do? I know that the easiest way can be to add to a table and process from the table every 5 mins or something like that. Thoughts?

Loading Data From Same Table (oracle) In To Diff SQL Tables With In Same Package(same Query)

Nov 14, 2007

Hi,

I have Table A . we already have 80 columns . we have to add 65 more columns.

we are populating this table from oracle .and we need to populate those 65 columns again from the same table.

Is it a better idea to add those new 65 columns to the same table or new table.

If we go for the same table then loading time will be double, If I go for new table and If i am able to run both the packages which loads table data from same oracle server to difffrent sql tables then we should be good. But if we run in to temp space issues on oracle server . Then i have to load the two tables separately which consumes the same time as earlier one.

I was thinking if there is a way in SSIS where I can pull data from same oracle table in to two diff sql tables at same time?

Building A Truly Platform Agnostic SSIS Package (SQL Server And Oracle Interop)

May 18, 2007

As painful as it is proving out to be, I am trying to create a single package that is vendor neutral between SQL Server and Oracle.

At first, I thought that as long as I was going OLEDB in and out, and I ensured that my SQL syntax was generic enough, I'd be OK.

Well, not exactly. I am finding there is more to this. Specifically, metadata gets generated differently based on the source/targets.

For example, on an OLE DB Source task, datatypes will vary (i.e. NUMBER in Oracle vs Int in SQL). The job here is to pick the common denominator for the SSIS specific type. Time consuming, but doable, I think.

Another issue is on an OLE DB Desitnation. If you choose Table for Data Access Mode, this value gets written to the dtsx XML file. So, even when both RDBMS have the same schema (which is an obvious prereq) if choosing SQL Server "dbo.DimTable" will get written to the file and for Oracle "SCHEMA.DIMTABLE" will get written.

So, I am am wondering, what is the best way to address this?

My inital thought was using a dtsConfig file (which I am already using extensively) and set the target table names accordingly. This approach would have the added benefit of allowing for post-deployment configuration changes should a table name change, for example.

This section of the dtsx file shows the values of interest:

Code Snippet
<component id="138" name="OLE_DST_DimTable" componentClassID="{E2568105-9550-4F71-A638-B7FE42E66922}" description="OLE DB Destination" localeId="-1" usesDispositions="true" validateExternalMetadata="True" version="4" pipelineVersion="0" contactInfo="OLE DB Destination;Microsoft Corporation;Microsoft SqlServer v9; (C) 2005 Microsoft Corporation; All Rights Reserved; http://www.microsoft.com/sql/support;4">
<properties>
<property'>http://www.microsoft.com/sql/support;4">http://www.microsoft.com/sql/support;4">
<properties>
<property id="139" name="CommandTimeout" dataType="System.Int32" state="default" isArray="false" description="The number of seconds before a command times out. A value of 0 indicates an infinite time-out." typeConverter="" UITypeEditor="" containsID="false" expressionType="None">0</property>
<property id="140" name="OpenRowset" dataType="System.String" state="default" isArray="false" description="Specifies the name of the database object used to open a rowset." typeConverter="" UITypeEditor="" containsID="false" expressionType="None">"ORASCHEMA"."DIMTABLE"</property>
<!-- More Properies -->
</component>

Ideally, I'd like configuration time control over the name attribute of the component element (highlighted) so that I can set the value of the property element with the OpenRowset attribute type (also highlighted). This way, presumambly as long as datatypes were generic enough, the mapping would just work.

But, in walking through the dtsConfig tree, I don't see these elements or attributes exposed.

I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions on how to accomplish this.

Why Does SqlCeConnection.Dispose() Invoke GC.WaitForPendingFinalizers()?

Jan 30, 2008

I've got an application uses a WPF GUI, is built in VS2008 final, targets .Net Framework 3.5, and uses a Sql Ce 3.5 database for local storage. After a specific WPF window is rebound the application hangs. Hitting pause on the debugger reveals the offending method is a call to SqlCeConnection.Dispose(). Via Reflector I can see this method calls SqlCeConnection+ObjectLifeTimeTracker.Close() which in turn calls GC.WaitForPendingFinalizers(). Within WPF there are some objects (specifically TextBox) which need to have their resources freed on the main application thread. The finalizer thread is waiting on the main application thread, which is in turn waiting on the finalizer thread, resulting in a deadlock.

You can see some additional discussion of the topic including our temporary resolution in this thread.

My question is why is there a call to GC.WaitForPendingFinalizers() buried within the SqlCeConnection.Dispose() call tree?

LINQ Layer - How To Invoke A Sort Function

Jun 5, 2007

 Dear all,
I'm trying to create a BLL for an objectdatasource to used for a sorted DataGrid. I am trying to learn about how to use LINQ and I'm sure this is a simple question.
var query = (from p in db.MP3Collections select p).OrderBy(?????????);

Now I want to invoke the following method  List<MP3Collection> GetAllMP3s(string sortColumns), which can contain a string name for the field in MP3Collection that is to be sorted (and optionally the "desc" tag).
Now I'm resorting tocoding the query on a case by case basis, which is very tiresome (see the partial code below). This works fine, but is very long and tedious coding. I'm not sure how to go about neatening the code, though am sure it involves the ?????? space above.
Any ideas?
 public static List<MP3Collection> GetAllMP3s(string sortColumns)
{System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Pure sort expression: " + sortColumns);
bool descending = false;if (sortColumns.ToLowerInvariant().EndsWith(" desc"))
{
sortColumns = sortColumns.Substring(0, sortColumns.Length - 5);descending = true;
}string[] columnNames = sortColumns.Split(',');
 MP3DataClassesDataContext db = new MP3DataClassesDataContext();
List<MP3Collection> query = (from p in db.MP3Collections select p).OrderByDescending(p => p.fileName).ToList<MP3Collection>();foreach (string columnName in columnNames)
{switch (columnName.Trim().ToLowerInvariant())
{case "filename":if (descending)
{
query = (from p in db.MP3Collections select p).OrderByDescending(p => p.fileName).ToList<MP3Collection>();System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Sorting filename descending");
}
else
{query = (from p in db.MP3Collections select p).OrderBy(p => p.fileName).ToList<MP3Collection>();System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Sorting filename ascending");
}
break;case "filepath":if (descending)
{
query = (from p in db.MP3Collections select p).OrderByDescending(p => p.filePath).ToList<MP3Collection>();System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Sorting filepath descending");
}
else
{query = (from p in db.MP3Collections select p).OrderBy(p => p.filePath).ToList<MP3Collection>();System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Sorting filepath ascending");
}
break;
//OTHER CASES HEREdefault:
query = (from p in db.MP3Collections select p).OrderBy(p => p.filePath).ToList<MP3Collection>();
//throw new ArgumentException("SortColumns contains an invalid column name.");break;
}
}

//var query = (from p in db.MP3Collections select p).OrderBy(p=>p.fileName).ToList<MP3Collection>();return query;

Can't P/Invoke Sqlceme35.dll With Headless Compact Framework

May 19, 2008

I am aware of the many posts that have addressed this issue in the past - I resolved this issue many months ago when it first happened to me. However, I have recently created a headless version of my Windows CE 6.0 based project that uses the Headless versions of the Compact Framework and this problem has suddenly re-surfaced. As in my UI equipped versions, the SQL CE cab files are copied to the device and have been installed. I have also tried copying the sqlceme35.dll to the application folder. The only real difference I can see is that the device is using the headless version so I suspect that there may be some incompatibility.

Has anyone successfully deployed a SCQL CE aplication to a headless device and if so were there any special steps that had to be taken to make it work?

Thanks

Invoke SSIS From Client-side Batchfile

Oct 9, 2007

Until now we worked with SQL Server 7.0, now we're migrating to SQL Server 2005.

With SQL Server 7.0 we had an MS Access application (located on a file server) used by several users, from which's form a batchfile (located on the same server) can be started. The Batchfile deletes an existing TXT-file called import_result.txt, then invokes a DTS-Package (located on a SQL Database server) which imports data to the Access-DB and creates a new file with the result of the DTS-execution (again called import_result.txt). Like that the user gets some information about success (or failure) of the data import.

How could this be implemented with SQL Server 2005 without having to install (and to licencse) SQL Express Engine on the clients? I found some threads about how to invoke an SQL Agent Job from the client to execute the SSIS-Package on the server, but I think that's not exactly what we need. Besides I'm not quite sure how exactly the SQL Agent Job could be invoked from Access.

Do you have any proposals?
Meicee
