Identity PK Column Based On Other PK...please Help

I have this table where there is tow primary keys ,one for Year and the other for DocNumber.
In this table the DocNumber takes a number based on each year,for example in year 2008 the DocNumber should start counting from 1 and increment by one for every record,when the year changes to 2009 the DocNumber should start again from 1 until and seed by one again.
Those columns are PKs because there must be one doc Number for each year and they can not be null .
Is there any simple way to approach this in Sql Server 2005 ,or do I have to work on trigger to do so...???
I need to add a column that has the datatype of integer with a seed and identity increment to a table that already exists and has data in it - and can't all NULLs. I have heard that this not possible if the table already exists.
I have downloaded the demo's of SQL Programmer and a couple of Embarcadero programs to see if that would help, but have had no succes to date.
Hi, I am having problem in bulk update of a sql server table haning identity column from a datatable( has no identity column) using sqlbulkcopy. I tried several approaches, but it does not show any error nor is the table getting updated. But the identity value seems to getting increased every time. thanks. varun
when i alter non identity column to identity column using this Query alter table testid alter column test int identity(1,1) then i got this error message Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 3 Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'identity'.
I am designing a dimension table which will include a short name column based on the (full) name column. For example say Product dimension where I will have ProductName and ProductShortName. ProductShortName will be the first 6 characters of ProductName. I could populate ProductShortName using:
Substring in the select when I select from the original system, e.g. SUBSTR(PRODUCT_NAME, 1, 6) AS ProductShortName
Create a derived column in the SSIS flow which does the same thing
Create the ProductShortName column as a computed column which uses substring on ProductName
Create a trigger that populates ProductShortName based on ProductName when a row is inserted or updated
Create a named calculation in the table in the Analysis Services project's data source view
Create a named query in the Analysis Services project's data source view
I usually use 1, and 5 or 6 would only be used if I only will create reports against the cubes. 3 seems easiest to maintain, so I am thinking about using that one, but maybe it is slow for the data flow as I imagine it must be something like using 4, or when is the column "created" at runtime, i.e. when the table is queried? Which approach(es) do or would you use? Pros and cons?
I have table of three column first column is an ID column. However at creation of the table i have not set this column to auto increment. Then i have copied 50 rows in another table to this table then set the ID column values to zero.
Now I have changed the ID column to auto increment seed=1 increment=1 but the problem is i couldn't figure out how to update this ID column with zero value set to each row with this auto increment values so the ID column would have values from 1-50. Is there a away to do this?
Ok,I just need to know how to get the last record inserted by the highestIDENTITY number. Even if the computer was rebooted and it was twoweeks ago. (Does not have to do with the session).Any help is appreciated.Thanks,Trint
I have a excel file which has a column called "Code" and their values are A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H. I want to create a new column called "status" based on the values of "Code".
Code:
A B C D E F G H
If A,C,E,G then "status" = "Active" else if B,D,F,H then "Status" = "Inactive". I like to do it using "Derived Column".
I'm working with a third-party database (SQL Server 2005) and the problem here is the following:
- There are a bunch of ETL processes that needs to insert rows on a table (let's call this table T) and at the same time, an ERP (owner of T) is up and running (reading, updating and inserting on T).
- The PK of T is an Integer.
Today all ETL processes uses (select max(ID) + 1 from T) to insert new rows, so just picture the scenario. It is a mess! Everyday they get duplicate key error when 2 or more concurrent processes are trying to insert a row (with the max) at the same time.
Considering that I can't change the PK, what is the best approach to solve this problem?

* I need to have processes in parallel inserting on T

i cannot implement this constraint, it throws the error when i execute the below Alter query,

the error thrown is : Failed to execute alter table query: 'ALTER TABLE child_table ADD CONSTRAINT fk_1_ct FOREIGN KEY (child_id) REFERENCES parent_table (parent_id) ON DELETE CASCADE '. Message: java.sql.SQLException: Cascading foreign key 'fk_1_ct' cannot be created where the referencing column 'child_table.child_id' is an identity column.
I am having issues getting this to work. I have the user login to a page to put in a request for vacation. When they login, I have a label that isn't visible that is equal to their User.Identity.Name. I select the user from the employee table where the username = the label User Identity Name and pull in the emp_id which is the primary key that identifies the user. I need to insert the request into the request table with the emp_id from the select statement, without showing the em_id on the screen. I tried using a hidden field and assigning the emp_id as the value, but it isn't working. Not sure if this is the best way to do this. Really new to ASP.NET 2.0 so I really appreciate any help. Hi guys, If I have a temporary table called #CTE With the columns [Account] [Name] [RowID Table Level] [RowID Data Level] and I need to change the column type for the columns: [RowID Table Level] [RowID Data Level] to integer, and set the column [RowID Table Level] as Identity (index) starting from 1, incrementing 1 each time. What will be the right syntax using SQL SERVER 2000?

Using MDS 2012: I have an entity "XYZ_Entity". In "XYZ_Entity" entity I have 2 domain based Columns "DealerGroup" and "Dealer".
While inserting information into "XYZ_Entity" entity user can select the required dealer group from domain base Dealer Group values. Now for selecting Dealer he wants the dealers to be filter based on selected dealer group and he can select from the filtered list. reason to do that is he don't want to go through thousands of dealers and select an incorrect one.

The report runs but I get a "#ERROR" when I place the field on the report.

This query, less the case statement for BLAmt creates the dataset for the SSRS. Adding the Case statement for the BLAmt produces the error: "Invalid column name 'Negamt'."
We have SharePoint list which has, say, two columns. Column A and Column B.
Column A can have three values - red, blue & green.
Column B can have four values - pen, marker, pencil & highlighter.

We are looking to create a report from SharePoint List using SSRS which has following view:

We tried Sum but not able to display in single row.
When a user clicks a button, an sql query is fired which increments the view_count value by one and calculates a new percentage value from this. The query to update the percentage value doesn't work, here's the query:
UPDATE [statistics] SET percentage = follow_count / view_count * 100 WHERE (stat_id = 15)
This code worked fine with MySQL, but since migrating to MSSql it doesn't seem to work. The data type of the percentage column is: decimal(5, 2)

Having an identity column in target table, how do I use SQL 7 DTS ?
In Import wizard, I chose 'ignore' in source, checked Enable Indenity Insert - DTS failed with a msg like - a column cannot have NULL...
In DTS package, had Fast load and Enable Indenity checked - no luck !
Unchecked Enable identity, do luck.
What would be the standard procs for this since this sounds like a very common senario. What I am expecting is to insert from source and SQL would take care identity column automatically. Appreciate your help very much !
I want to know how to reset the identiy column when i delete a row from the existing table.

I have 10 records inserted into it.,which would be from 1...thru...10 i delete a record say 5 then i have 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9,10, now i want them to be rearranged to systamatic order like 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 how can i do this.
I have a table that has a field that will not accept null values. I was trying to create a new table with a new field that would accept null values. I would then drop the original table and rename the new table. The problem is my key field has the Identity column (Autonumber) turned on. This allows the recordID to be automatically generated. Is there anyway to bypass the Identity Column feature and still keep it there future records? I already tried the "with Nocheck Clause" but does not work.
