May 2, 2001If there are gaps ( due to deletions ) in indentity column, how do I
resequence the values ? As well as how to reset the last used number ?

May 2, 2008I am trying to reset an IDENTITY RowNumber
back to 1 in a query when the Person's Name is the same. The following query
can be used agains the pubs database in SQL Server.
I am trying to figure out where to place the section for the DBCC CHECKIDENT item in order to reset the RowNumber back to 1 when ever the lname column is the same. For example if the pub database had duplicate records for a given employee the RowNumber would reset back to 1.

Resetting IDENTITY
Apr 18, 2008I've seen a lot of solutions to reset the an Identity Field, but the one I found in the website I mentioned worked fine in SQL 2005 Express Edition.

The other solutions in SQL 2005 that use ALTER TABLE and ALTER COLUMN just don't work, I don't no Why.

Resetting Identity Values Of PKs
Sep 21, 2000What is the easiest way in T-SQL to reset the identity values of
the PK columns in a DB. Here's the scenario.
I'm going to be backing up a HUGE DB and then restoring
it to a new server. Once there I will run an SP to remove all the existing
data. The tables are now row-free. However my customer doesn't like that
the first record they add gets PK value of 5,321, or whatever.
After I remove all the data how can I reset the ids?
It would be nice to add some code to my sp_cleardb
that would go back and reset the identity columns
FYI
All of my tables use auto-incrementing identity fields with a seed of 1
1) I know how to do it in enterprise manager, but I need it in scripting
since I'll have to do it on hundreds of tables
2) I tried using alter table to drop the PK constraint, but that requires
knowing the pk constraint name, which is SQL generated and I won't know.
I think I got very close, but the code was just getting too big. I thought,
there must be an easier function to use, or a built in SP, or something?
Anyone know how to script this?

Resetting Value Of Identity Field After A Delete
Mar 29, 2000Can anyone tell me of a way to reset the value of an Identity field back to its seed value after all the rows in a given table have been deleted and I try to re-populate it? There are foreign key relationships so I cannot just drop and recreate the table, and I really need to address this issue from within sql, rather than from the application.

But I noticed that when I deleted all fictitious data from the tables, the primary key columns keep creating automatically numbers that are above the last one before all data was erased instead of starting again from number 1. - There are a bunch of ETL processes that needs to insert rows on a table (let's call this table T) and at the same time, an ERP (owner of T) is up and running (reading, updating and inserting on T).
- The PK of T is an Integer.
Today all ETL processes uses (select max(ID) + 1 from T) to insert new rows, so just picture the scenario. It is a mess! Everyday they get duplicate key error when 2 or more concurrent processes are trying to insert a row (with the max) at the same time.
Considering that I can't change the PK, what is the best approach to solve this problem?
To sum up:
* I need to have processes in parallel inserting on T
* I can't change anything on T
* The PK is NOT an Identity

i cannot implement this constraint, it throws the error when i execute the below Alter query,

the error thrown is :

Nov 8, 2007I have been trying to get the new sol_id that is added so I can use it in other code, but it is only returning 0. The new record is getting added to the table, but my varaiable myNewSolID is 0 in my response.write(myNewSolID)

In Import wizard, I chose 'ignore' in source, checked Enable Indenity Insert - DTS failed with a msg like - a column cannot have NULL...
In DTS package, had Fast load and Enable Indenity checked - no luck !
Unchecked Enable identity, do luck.
What would be the standard procs for this since this sounds like a very common
senario.
What I am expecting is to insert from source and SQL would take care identity column automatically.

I have 10 records inserted into it.,which would be from 1...thru...10 i delete a record say 5 then i have 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9,10, now i want them to be rearranged to systamatic order like 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 how can i do this.

Feb 29, 2000I have a table that has a field that will not accept null values. I was trying to create a new table with a new field that would accept null values. I would then drop the original table and rename the new table. The problem is my key field has the Identity column (Autonumber) turned on. This allows the recordID to be automatically generated. Is there anyway to bypass the Identity Column feature and still keep it there future records? I already tried the "with Nocheck Clause" but does not work.

Apr 9, 2006Kudos to y'all! On most of my tables, I'm using a column of data type numeric and properties set as Identity with no replication. Now I know that it can handle only a length of 9 and obviously not nullable. Now by length of 9, does it mean in bytes or literal digits. If it is, then that would mean that it would reach only up to 999,999,999. What happens then if it reaches that digit?

I am new to Mobile programming. I am now working on a mobile project. I encounter an issue when I sync the data:
cause I can't modify the schema, so I have to use RDA instead of Merge replication on sql server 2005.
However, There is an identiy column on each table I will pull them down to local mobile database. And I will use those identity columns to connect tables. Even worse, the photo's new name will combine the photoID which is an identity column. There would an issue, if i sync data, the photoID would be same on different local mobile databases. And there would be generate same identity value when users sync data.
How can I avoid those issues? If you have any good ideas, please help me out so that I can meet the project deadline.
