Images In DataBase Or Server Folder?
May 9, 2007
hi everyone,
I'm currently developing a website
and have a lot of images to use there(obviously :P),
until now I have in some tables in my sql server db where exists a column which stores the path to: 'image folder + filename'
And my question is: what are the advantages of using binary images in database instead of this approach to the problem, i.e., having images stored in a server folder.
Thanks in advance.

I need to load images from folders into a SQL Server table and I have done it successfully for individual images, however I need to load all the names of the folders and sub folders names in separate columns + load all images.
So the folders look like as in the screenshot and the final result of the table in SQL Server should look like the second screenshot.

Hi
We are building a portal internal to our org. Here, For one of the option on the portal, we have given each user in our organization an option to upload three images. Iam storing these images in Sql server table columns with datatype image. So, the question is:
1. Is it ok to store the images in sqlserver? Will it add any performance degradation?
2. Is it ok to store the images in folder and store the respective urls in the DB?
Please let us know.
Thanks!

I have developed on winodws based application using C# in .NET. I am connecting from my database using internet, means my database kept on remote location. I have to save images in DB because I can't save and access images in external folder from remote location. In this situation my DB is growing very fast. Is there any other alternative to work on this requirement or compress image in any format so that I can reduce DB size.

I dont alot about sql server 2005(Express edition). For debugging purposes i want to copy the whole app_data folder(.mdf & .log files) on the production server to another folder on the same machine(or sometimes to a network folder). So when i copy and try to paste this App_data folder to a new location, i get this error message
"cannot copy ASPNETDB: it is being used by another person or program. close any programs that might be using the file and try again."
After reading the above message, i close visual web developer, stop the website in IIS and stop the SQLExpress service on the server and try again but still get the same message.
So how can i make sure that all the programs accessing these database files are closed such that i'm able able to copy them to a different location.

Hi,
I have developed an application on the Intranet, but what I have done is dealing with the database directly using MS SQL Server 2005 server. But I have seen some people or videos where they create the database on "App_Data" folder.
I am going to develop online application on Internet this time, I should develop it offline on my machine. So, I have 2 questions foe now:
1) What is the right way to create MSSQL 2005 database? in "App_Data" or in MSSQL 2005 server?
2) When creating database in "App_Data" folder, is it going to be created automatically or shown on my MSSQL 2005 server?
Thanks,

On my VWD 2005 Express, I have installed 2 SQL Server 2005 Express databases in the App_Data folder.I kind of remember these 2 databases were installed from Wrox web site or a zip file. Now we still useSQL Server 2000 databases for our ASP.net applications. I have downloaded the SQL Server 2005 Express. These 2 databases in the App_Data folder seem to work fine although I can not see them from theManagement Studio Express.
My question is: How do I 'manually' create a new SQL Server 2005 database into the App_Data folder?
TIA,Jeffrey

I've been struggling with this issue,
1) Test--FolderName (This Test folder name should use as a database name for below sub folders)
a)Create--Sub Foldername
i)create.sql
b)Alter---Sub FolderName
i)Alter.sql
c)Insert---Sub FolderName
i)Insert.sql
[Code] .....
The scripts need to be run in order. So script one needs to run first folder in that sub folders after that next second folders etc..
Is there a way to create a bat file that automatically runs all these scripts, in order against, the databases they need to?
The databases that they need to run against have the name of the database at the beginning of the name of the folder.

Hi.
I've been traling the forum and the internet for a striaghtr forward solution on this.
I'm trying to do what loads of people have already achieved: retrive images from an SQL database.
I have successfully uploaded inages to an "iamges" table, storing the image as SQL type "image", also storing size, type, description, name etc.
I want to be able to read one or more of these images (and other data) back from the table.
I'm using C#, ASP NET 2.0, SQL,
Any examples I've found needed a lot of tweaking, and for some reason or other didn't work!
Please don;t just pose yet another URL to an example - I've probably tried it and failed already.
I don't mind if I display the images in a GridView or just within an aspx page.
Ideally I'd be able to dispaly a few images on a page.
I know how to read and display the rest of the data in the "images" table.
Can anyone help please?
Do you need more info?
Thanks in advance,
Garrett

An odd question from me, I know, but this time, I assure you a twist.
I have a group that wants to store images in either a database or a file share, in order to make a certain website able to run on a load balanced web farm. These images are around 1KB each in size, and have a lifespan of exactly one use (think of graphs). I went a-googling, and found no shortage of articles that say "don't do it, but here's how you can do it", but I did not find any real hard statements as to why to not do it. Needless to say, this is hurting the case for not putting these images in the database. I have found an article that says images over 8KB will have worse performance, but I can not use that factoid here. For the moment, I have the developers leaning toward the fileshare, because they will be writing transaction logs all day, which will be more work than the fileshare needs to do....I think. The best I can do, is cut the text/image datatype overhead, and have them create the table as varbinary(2000), but even then, I don't like the look of the idea.
Anyone out there have good articles/whitepapers that detail the differences between writing single-use images to a fileshare vs. a SQL database? <baiting=blatant>Failing that, do any of the Microsoft development team have an opinion?</baiting>
Alternatively, what is the general opinion of keeping session state information in a database (because I bet that will be my next battle). I see .NET includes a session state server, but not being a programmer, I can not create an opbjective test.

Hia,
We have a simple table which we need to store logo's for a website. The table looks like this:
CLIENTLOGO (Tablename)
id (Bigint) (PK) - NOT NULL
StoredImage (Image) - NOT NULL
ImageSize (Integer) - NULL
Im not an expert on sql sorry!
I have two problems,
1. I need to upload some logo's (they are gif's if thats important)
2. I need to store the image size
I don't have a clue how to do 2 but ive tried the following for 1 but it doesnt seem to work
Insert into CLIENTLOGO (id, storedImageTablename)
Values (1, 'c:ClientLogo1.gif')
Can somebody help, im really confused about this one

Hello folks,
I am going to try to explain this as best I can. First off I have a single database within SQL 2005 and the table within the database has a field for binary image data. Currently this database has about 4,000 image records.
What I would like to do is recompress each of the images with new compression software called Déjà vu. What needs to happen in my mind is, pull the current binary data into the compression software, compress the image, then upload the binary data back into the same record as a batch command.
My question is can I do something like that via command line? Or is this something that will require rebuilding the entire database from the ground up? I like having the data all in one database for ease of
maintenance and intergration with other databases I am working with, so I dont want to just link the images.

I know a WMI event watcher can be used to watch for a new file being added to a folder. However, I need to check for new folders being added to an existing folder. I haven't been able to find a post on doing this. Is there a way in WQL to check for a new folder being added instead of a new file? I've used SQL for years, but am new to SSIS.

Ok,
I have a network folder called A
I have a SharePoint (2007) Document Library site called B. Web Client is enabled on the server and B is mapped as a Drive (let's call it Y for this discussion)
I want to move documents in A to B. Easy enough, right? Not so....
I first started by creating a batch file that issues a COPY \A \Y /Y at the command prompt. Viola! Worked Great!
I then moved that command to a SQL Agent job as a CMDExec statement (exact same statement) and attempted to run it.....CRASH! It found the files in A but then said "The system cannot find the path specified"
Ok, so I tried it in SSIS. CRASH! Checked the error log. Same thing...
So I then checked the account under which the SQl Agent was running (special domain account for all our SQL Servers). Thinking it might mater I changed it to run under my name (I'm in Domain admin). I also ensured I had permissions to the SPS 2007 library as well. (I did).
Ran again! CRASH! Same error....
So, I created a batch file , placed thec ommand in the batch file and ran that from the command prompt! Viola! Worked Great.
So, I was thinking of how ingenious I was as I pasted my C:RootCopy.bat into my SQL Agent job. With a big grin on my face I right clicked and picked "Start Job at step".......CRASH! Same error.
Does anyone have any ideas on this ???????????????
Thanks,
Stephen

Hi,
I want to view the images that are stored in a sql database. I am using VS2005. When I open server explorer and drill down to the dbase tables and the click on the show table data option the table is displayed in a new window.
when I open a table that stores images only a tag saying that the cell contains binary data is displayed. There doesn't seem to be any way to display the actual image and therefore edit the image. I can manipulate textual data directly in the database table...how do I edit graphics?
Thanks!
