Implementing Sql Server Express Within A Strict Domain Environment...
Nov 5, 2006
I am looking for some assistance from the grand knowledgebase out there concerning the implementation of Sql Server Express 2005 on a client's strict domain environment.
I am designing and implementing a pos software that resides on registers and a server within a number of stores. The registers are running WePos and the server is running Server 2003. I run an instance of sql server express on all devices. The registers read the server when it can see it but when it cannot it reads the local instance. I am seeing a number of performance issues and I am trying to tweek the installation and coding of SSE on all devices.
Any words of wisdom for me out there???
Thank you,
Sir Robert

Hi all,I have posted the same topic under ASP-NET-Developers but had no reply;I then posted it under ASP.Net Community and had also no reply.Hence, i'm posting it here to prevent the impression of spam post ...I have created a SqlContextTrigger using ADO.NET 2.0 to create atrigger onSQL Server 2005.In the class, I create a file and specify its path to be in theApplicationDomain base directory such as:String Path = AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory.ToString()However, the path is always the SQL Server Binn Directory. I'd like totellthe program that I want the path to be related not to SQL Server BinnDirectory but to Visual Studio Solution's Project Bin Directory. How do I do that?Best regards

I've been parachuted into a place with a few dozen servers, several thousand external users (and scheduled to grow). Right now the whole place - IT and non-IT alike - l logs in with SA.....
(where's the 'Puking' icon??)
They've got Windows logins, but that's about as tight as it gets. Honestly I've never seen anywhere as insecure....and not sure where to start.

I've been charged with architecting a new SSRS solution for our environment. We're mainly a .NET shop which works with an Oracle Database Server. Our developers want to start using SSRS for report creation and I'm not sure what is the best approach when it comes to this. Normally most of our environments have 3 separate servers, each one is DEV, QA and Prod. With SSRS however, i know that you can create multiple folders each with its own datasource connection, so i wonder if it would be better to just have one server were the developers develop their reports and then move them into a 'production' folder. (Any particular downsides to this approach?)
Also, are there considerations to be taken say, to tune Production SSRS vs a development SSRS or is that not really an issue? Besides that any other resources or tips for implementing SSRS for the first time, we're not going to do much with the actual databases to start we're just going to connect to our main Oracle database.

Would it be possible to disjoin the SQL Server Clustered environment to a new domain without having to reinstall the cluster?
disjoin
e.g 2 node activeactive cluster with 4 named instances. SQLserver1.dn.za; SQLserver2.dn.za; SQLserver3.dn.za;SQLserver4.dn.za
servernode1.dn.za; servernode2
re-join them as SQLserver1.dn.ra; SQLserver2.dn.ra; SQLserver3.dn.ra;SQLserver4.dn.ra
servernode1.dn.ra; servernode2.dn.ra
What would be the impact on the servers, will they be able to resolve the new dns.?

Hello Folks
I am a total new boy to Visual Web Developer and am struggling to implement a lookup field in the SQL Server Express that ships with it.
I am trying to find the equivelent of using the lookup wizard in MS Access. So in Access I can select the lookup wizard from the drop down list of datatypes and refer to another table of standing data. Once configured the tables contents appear as a drop down list in the field of the master table.
So how do I create a table in SQL Server 2005 that uses another table to give a drop down list in one of its fields?
I have found some excellent tutorials and books but none of them seem to drill down to this level of table design, can anyone recommend any books that do?
Thanks
Bradley

I'd like to allow students in a lab to use the Express Manager and T-SQL to create their own databases. I think I've figured out just about everything - but the last step. Here's my thinking on how to do this:
1. Students are power users, not local admin
2. Created a login for the builtinpower users group as follows:
create login [BUILTINPower Users] from windows with default_database=[master]
go
exec master..sp_addsrvrolemember @loginame = N'BUILTINPower Users', @rolename = N'dbcreator'
go
3. Now students can start the Express Manager and connect to:
localhostsqlexpress using Windows Authentication
4. After they do, they can open and run a script creating a database and populating it with tables and records.
5. All good up to here... but when trying to access the new database using VB Express (file based, not a remote connection) access is denied.
The problem is in the NTFS file permissions being assigned to the new database mdf and ldf files. Local administrators and the builtin Network Service accounts have permissions, but the student who created the database gets nothing... So the student is denied access to the mdf and ldf files when trying to make a connection to them using VB Express.
I can go in with a different account having admin privileges are assign privileges to power users for the mdf/ldf files after they're created but this isn't what I need (students need to work whenever they want without waiting for an admin to fix the file permissions).
Maybe I'm going about this all wrong? If I have to I can insist on students always using VS 2005 instead of VB Express and use connections to a remote database (no problems doing this), but I'm still hoping for an express solution.
I'm new to this forum, so apologies if this is a dumb question (but even if it is - can anyone point me in the right direction?)
Thanks
Mike Morrison

Hi all,
I must be missing something obvious. I'm not clear on how SQL Express can provide a decent development experience. Consider:
1. I have a class library that includes an express database file, set to always copy to output folder.
2. I have code that attaches to the database in the output folder at runtime.
As a result of the above, the first execution after restarting SQL Server will work. Subsequent builds will fail because SQL Server has a lock on the database file in the output folder. Or one of the two files will be copied (DB and log) and therefore they will be out of sync and detected as corrupt when the code attempts to connect. Either way, I have to restart SQL Server and rebuild before the DB connectivity will work again.
I figured I might need to detach from the DB in my shutdown code, but I cannot execute sp_detach_db from my code because it cannot be done through a connection to the database (database is in use). Moreover, I'm not sure I want to because the user might execute multiple instances of the application.
What am I missing here? Do I need to put steps in my build script to stop and start the local SQL Server instance?
Thanks for any help,
Kent

Subject problem has me quite vexed.
I am receiving the following error when attempting to access reporting services... to sum things up real nice and tidy-
I get three login prompts - then the access denied response. It is almost as if it is unable to authenticate the user... anyway... here's the actual error response, I'd really appreciate any input/insight/resolution.
Server Error in '/Reports' Application.
Access to the path 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2Reporting ServicesReportManagerin' is denied.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2Reporting ServicesReportManagerin' is denied.
ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via <identity impersonate="true"/>, the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user.
To grant ASP.NET access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer, choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the appropriate user or group. Highlight the ASP.NET account, and check the boxes for the desired access.

Hi all,
I have a SQL Server 2005 Express edition instance set up on one server, and IIS on another server.
The SQL Server process account is a domain user account, which I have added to the local groups that SQL Server created during installation (I originally used a local user account instead of domain account; however, the problem occurs with both).
SQL Server runs fine, and if I set my IIS application pool identity to a domain admin, my web app can access the database and retrieve the data necessary.
However, I have a domain user account that I want to use to run the app pool and retrieve the data. The domain user account is added to the IIS_WPG group on the web server. On the database server, I have created a login for the account, as well as added it to the db_datareader role of the database that is used for the site.
However, the user is not able to connect to the SQL Server. I get the "Login failed for user <user account>" error in ASP.NET. I also tried connecting with SQL Server Management Studio, and I get the same error. I checked and the user has connect permission to the database server.
With admin accounts, there are no problems logging in, etc.
Any pointers are appreciated,
Thanks,
SA.
Edit: I was able to find out that the State is 11 for the error. According to http://blogs.msdn.com/sql_protocols/archive/2006/02/21/536201.aspx, this indicates "Valid login but server access failure." I am not sure how to resolve this.

Dear all,
I am constantly running into this error when calling CLR functions from triggers (even when the triggers are CLR functions themselves): The context transaction which was active before entering user defined routine, trigger or aggregate "[name of CLR sp]" has been ended inside of it, which is not allowed. Change application logic to enforce strict transaction nesting.
However, there is no cyclic nesting going on here. In fact, the error only appears when the CLR function is writing to the database. Only executing SELECT statements inside the statements doesn't freak out the SQL server (2005 SP1 in my case). I am not ending any transaction at all. This error shows up in many places: as exceptions from ASP.NET web pages, as errors in the msmerge_conflicts_info etc. Now I saw in the thread:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=457818&SiteID=1
..that this was supposedly a known bug in CLR. But in my case, it appears that I can't call a single CLR inside a trigger if the CLR is supposed to write something to the database, which is a pretty severe limitation of CLR imho.
I was trying to figure out if I can avoid this error by escaping the transaction context, I tried that inside CLR (Using New TransactionScope(TransactionScopeOption.Suppress)) but it didn't work. Also, calling COMMIT TRANSACTION before calling the CLR doesn't seem to solve the problem since it's not suppose to end the ambient transaction of the trigger according to BOL, and in many cases it doesn't seem wise to do so, e.g. if the trigger is fired in merge replication as in my case.

Hi,
We have the followoing:
-A "master domain" AD, a "sub domain" AD, a trust relationship between the two (sub trust master)
-A sql server 2005 on a win server 2003 in "sub domain" AD
-A linked server to "sub domain" AD
-A linked server login using a "sub domain" admin acccount
-A view to this linked server
-A grant on masterDomain/Domain Users to the database
-A grant on subDomain/Domain Users to the database
-We want all connections done through "Windows Authentication" not "Database Authentication".
Queries on the view work fine using "sub domain" user accounts.
Queries on the view fail using "master domain" user accounts (including master domain admin accounts)
"Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "ADsDSOObject" for linked server "ADSI" reported an error. The provider indicates that the user did not have the permission to perform the operation."
All connections are done through "Windows Authentication" not "Database Authentication".
Can we establish cross domain connectivity with "Windows Authentication" ?
Below are details of the implementation:
SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT *
FROM OPENQUERY(ADSI,
'SELECT displayname, givenName, sn, cn (etc...)
FROM ''LDAP://OU=PEOPLE,DC=subDomain,DC=com''
WHERE objectCategory = ''Person'' AND objectClass = ''user'' ')
EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname ='ADSI', @useself='false',
@rmtuser='subDomainAdminAccnt', @rmtpassword='sunDomainAdminAccntPassword';
In SQL Server Mngt Studio in Server Objects/Linked Servers/Providers/ ADSI properties security tab I have:
"connections will: <be made using this security context> Remote login:'subDomainAdminAccnt' With password: 'subDomainAdminAccntPassword'
Error:
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Novice SQL Express User...
Now that I've installed SQL 2005 Express Advanced, shouldn't there be a DB Environment I can work with? There must be a configuration mistake because I can't see the "container?" Prior to SP1 I had SQL 2005 Express installed and I could open and use SQL; however, once I loaded SP1 that stopped. I thought if I load the "Advanced" I would be "back in business."

This is more of a philosophical post, but feedbacks are welcome!
I am working at migrating SQL 2000 DTS packages that pulls data from MAS90 via ODBC connections.
At first, I REALLY tried to learn SSIS and I hated it at first, with all the new things one has to do to get a simple import to work. After a while, I begin to appreciate some of the new design and the more tiered approach. Indeed, I tried to use SSIS to import the tables and even learned how to overcome the Unicode/non-Unicode conversion errors by using the Import Wizard to do the grunt work.
But today I came across a show stopper: My imports are failing because the source lied about its metadata type and I am getting a "Value too large for output column" error. I tried to recreate the Task to no avail. I searched on the web and there are very few posts regarding to this and unfortunately I don't have a way to tweak my ODBC connection properties for MAS90 to some how "fool" SSIS. I finally give up and migrate the DTS 2000 package instead.
I am not too happy about this solution because I know that more likely or not Microsoft will discontinue support for such legacy approach and then it is more work down the road. I REALLY wanted to do it right, to rebuild it natively in SSIS but why does SSIS have to make things so hard by enforcing the type checks so tightly? Is it so bad to allow users who know the data better to by pass the validations? We are not working in a perfect Comp Sci 101 world where every thing is scrubbed clean, we work in a world of bad, old, malformed data.
If there is a way for me to overcome that "value too large" error, I am all ears.
Thank you for reading.

I have a web app that uses two SQL Express databases. One of the databases is the membership database. I am deploying the app to a hosted environment. Here is my connection string:
<add name="Akamojo_APSNETDB" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLExpress; AttachDBFileName=|DataDirectory|Akamojo_ASPNETDB.mdf; Initial Catalog=Akamojo_ASPNETDB; Integrated Security=true; User Instance=true"/>
Here is the error that I get:
Could not open new database 'Akamojo_ASPNETDB'. CREATE DATABASE is aborted.
Cannot attach the file 'e:hostingmemberakamojoTournamentLogApp_DataAkamojo_ASPNETDB.mdf' as database 'Akamojo_ASPNETDB'.
File activation failure. The physical file name "c:inetpubwwwrootTournamentLogApp_DataAkamojo_ASPNETDB_log.LDF" may be incorrect.
The log cannot be rebuilt when the primary file is read-only.
The mdf file is not read only. In the hosted environment the database is on the E drive. In my dev environment the database is on the C drive. From the error message, it appears that when it tries to build the log file it is trying to build it on the C drive in a path that doesn't exist in the hosted environment.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I want to install SQL Express 2K5 on a lightly used second Windows 2003 SP1 DC. I know about the warning not to do this type of install. Hi
I have a customer that was using Sql 2005 Express on a W2k3 server. They then decided to turn the server in to a second domain controller. When they did this Sql Express stopped working, I'm guess because the account the service was running as nolonger existed (Network Service account). Because of this they demoted it back to just a member server, but still the sql express service wouldn't start.
When I look at their server now I have noticed that the Sql2005$ accounts Sql express created during installation are all missing.
What I want to do now is set the Sql express setvice to use a domain account (using the SqlServer configuration manager), but I'm concerned that because the sql2005$ groups are missing things won't run as expected.
Should I be worried about these accounts?
What would happen when it becomes a domain controller anyway, won't these local account disappear and hence my new sqlexpress service account wouldn't have permission to the sql server data folders??
Thanks for your help
Graham

I am new here and new to SQL Express. I've searched for my issue, but can 't quite find anything close to the problem or how to solve it, if it's even solvable. I am using SQL Express on a pc to connect to the back end of a database. The front end application (an access runtime) also runs on the same pc. This pc is on a domain. I think I've tried every combination of protocols, and although connectivity via ODBC is successful, the application can't connect - gives the "server doesn't exist or access denied". When I log on to this computer with the "machine" logon (not the domain), I have SQL Express configured to use shared memory, the application runs just fine. I need to use this database for testing in a non productivity environment, but I really hate to log off the domain to run it. Ideas?
Thanks,

I want to be able to implement infinite levels of Hierarchies in SQL Server (2012), in addition to being able to address issues like same child having more than one parent (eg. An Employee could end up having 2 different managers - eg. Project Manager, Delivery Manager).
One way is to have self referencing table (where each row has a parent id , referencing to a parent record - but this would not work in cases where a child has more than 1 parent).
Are there other more efficient ways? What is the best way to implement this?
