Implementing A Lookup Field In SQL Server 2005 Via VWD Express

I am a total new boy to Visual Web Developer and am struggling to implement a lookup field in the SQL Server Express that ships with it.
I am trying to find the equivelent of using the lookup wizard in MS Access. So in Access I can select the lookup wizard from the drop down list of datatypes and refer to another table of standing data. Once configured the tables contents appear as a drop down list in the field of the master table.
So how do I create a table in SQL Server 2005 that uses another table to give a drop down list in one of its fields?
I have found some excellent tutorials and books but none of them seem to drill down to this level of table design, can anyone recommend any books that do?
I am looking for some assistance from the grand knowledgebase out there concerning the implementation of Sql Server Express 2005 on a client's strict domain environment.
I am designing and implementing a pos software that resides on registers and a server within a number of stores. The registers are running WePos and the server is running Server 2003. I run an instance of sql server express on all devices. The registers read the server when it can see it but when it cannot it reads the local instance. I am seeing a number of performance issues and I am trying to tweek the installation and coding of SSE on all devices.
Say I want to lookup a value in another dataset, but there is a grouping that requires you to know what the values for each level is in order to get to the correct detail record. Can you still use the lookup function with more than one field to compare against? So for example
Department \___SalesPerson \___Measure
I want to be able to add a new row at the Measure level, but lookup each field from another dataset. In order to do that I will need the Department AND SalesPerson values to do the lookup, but I dont think the Lookup function will let us do that will.
I'm a student of computer science, and for one of my projects I would need Weka plug-in for SQL Server 2005. I don't know much about plug-ins, so if I'm asking stupid questions, I hope you will forgive me. It was easy to get a library from weka that I can use in Visual Studio, but I just can't figure out, how to get Weka data mining algorithms into plug-ins for MSSQL 2005.
How can I implementing Membership and Role Management on SQL Server 2005 (not Express)? Anyone have any documentation? Are there any scripts to run that will basically set up the same Database schema on SQL Server 2005 that Express uses? Thanks.
Microsoft recommends using Windows authentication instead of SQL Server authentication in SQL Server 2005 for improved security. What are the Microsoft best practices for implementing this? Will be helpful if someone also provides some links that talks about this....
I am not sure If I can do this with a lookup, but what I would like todo is perhaps use lookup to retrieve a control date from anunassociated table to control what date is entered in another table.For example :the main table , table 1 has many entries with a field called date_enter which is the date the record was entered.table 2 has a control_dateIf the date entered in table 1 is less than or = to the control date wewant to give the user a error message.I am thinking of using display only field and lookup to set itWould need to have the date value from the control table available tothe active table of table 1 when entering the the date_enter.However as there is no join field between the two tables am not surehow to do it. Was thinking might have to add a key field that wasallways null and in the BEFORE EDITADD EDITUPDATE section set it sothat the key would be nullAm using Informix 5 , Any help would be apprecia
When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.
How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?
Currently, if I run this query:

Hopefully I am posting this question in the correct forum. I am still learning about SQL 2005. Here is my issue. I have an access db that I archive weekly into and SQL server table. I have used the dst wizard to create an import job and initally that worked fine. field I have as the primary key in the access db cannot be the primary key in the sql table since I archive weekly and that primary key field will be imported several time over. I overcame this initally by not having a primary key in the sql table. This table is strictly for reference. However, now I need to setup a unique field for each of the records in the sql table. What I have done so far is create a recordID field in the sql table that is an int and set as yes to Identify (auotnumber). That worked great and created unique id for all existing records. The problem now is on the import. When I try to import the access table i am getting an error because of the extra field in the sql table, and the error is saying cannot import null value into this field. So... my final question is how can I import the access table into the sql table with one extra field which is the autonumber unique field? Thanks a bunch for any asistance.
If i have been using sql server 2005 express for developing my application and i decide to upgrade to sql server 2005 express with advanced services while still working on the same application, what will happen to my application's database. Can i be able to continue with my work with out any major regrets.
I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.
When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the
I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.
I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.
Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.
HiIm trying to connect Visual Basic Express 2005 to a remote SQL Server Express 2005. I cant find how i can do that in VB.net Express.In Web developer there are no problem to connect to a remote SQL server but i cant find it in VB.net Express. Hi Guys, I created a Product database table using Visual Basic 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express. I have just added a new column [Picture] to the database table, which of course, should store an image or picture of a product. I am writing to kindly ask you guys for help .
i) How do I include image files into this column [Picture]? ii) How do I get this image to display on Visual Basic 2005 Express form, so that when a product is selected the product image is displayed accordingly?
I am converting an Access 2003 database into SQL 2005 Express for purposes of evaluating the SQL server environment as a future home for my data. One of the motivating factors in the conversion is the integration of LINQ with VB 2008.
Assuming that there was no conversion tool to migrate Access forms for use with SQL and VB 2008, I converted the Access data table and used the VB 2008 form designer to databind textbox controls to fields in the converted SQL database. Here are some basic questions:
The conversion from Access to SQL apparently did not include the default numeric formatting (currency, percentage, etc.) which was part of the Access data table. Is there a place in the SQL server environment to supply a default data format so that forms and reports referencing the field do not need to be manually formatted for each reference?
After converting the data table and spending 2 hours designing the dataform for the 80+ fields, I inadvertantly changed the table structure and found that the dataform was not happy (oops). I corrected the databindings manually for the few errant field references, but wonder if there is some wizard to do this automatically?
Is there a way to print out the dataform itself? I used the following code snippet in my Access form code-behind and I wonder if there is an equivalent VB 2008 function:
Finally, Access can instantly change from dataform to datasheet presentation screens. Can this be done in VB 2008 with two views simultaneously presenting the same SQL data?
Please excuse my naivete, but in contrast to Access 2003 where program functionality is encapsulated into readily apparent controls, menus, and dialogs, the SQL server environment seems foreign, spartan, and all the words are different. Thanks, -BGood

Hi, I want to make a component library in Visual Basic.NET and connect to a remote Sql Server. When I create a new DataSet with the wizard, I can only connect to a .mdf file, but not to a Sql Server. With Visual Web Developer I can connect to a Sql server. What is the difference between these enviroments ? How can I do the same with Visual Basic.NET ? Thanks in advance.
I'm doing a data conversion with one of my fields (SUMDWK) from one of the tables that will be used in a merge join. With the new, converted field, I do a look up. From this look up, I want to take a new field FiscalWeekOfYear, and replace the original field, SUMDWK. This is necessary because SUMDWK is one of the sorted fields. In the look up, it is not possible to change the Output Alias. Does anybody know a way around this? Thanks.
I am using two tables, courses and video with a one to many relationship with the videos table being the many. How do I populate the courseID in the video table with the corresponding courseID from the courses table using a combination of Formview & Gridview or two Gridviews, or a dropdown field populated with the course name and courseID in a Form or details view.This is a simple task in Access accomplished using a dropdown list to select the correct video.

Can I implement the Standby SQL Server using the SQL Server Standard Edition? What's actually the difference between Standard and Enterprise Edition? As I know the Enterprise edition can be installed for up to 32 CPU while Standard edition can only be installed for up to 4 CPU.
In my SQL Server Express (that is installed in my Windows XP Pro PC), SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration has Protocols for SQLEXPRESS. I tried to do "Enabling CLR Integration" in my SQL Server Express: (1) If I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections", I got an error "An exception occurred in SMO while trying to manage a service, (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) Additional information: Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoEnum) The operation could not be completed. (WinMgmt). (2) If I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Features, I got a different error "Computer localhost does not exist on the network, or the computer cannot be configured remotely. Verify that the remote computer has the required computer has the required Windows Management Instrumentation components and then try again. (SQLSAC) Additional Information: An exception occurred in SMO while trying to manage a service. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo). Failed to retrieve data for this request. I have SQL Server Express and VB 2005 Express installed in a Microsoft Windows XP Pro PC that is a terminal PC in our office Network. My Network Administrator has granted my terminal PC for Administrator Use. I tried to do the ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 programming in my terminal PC and I could not get a remote connection in the Window Form Application via Window Authorization. I do not know how to make this kind of remote connection in my Network. Please help and advise.
For the first time, I want to set up the configuration of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to allow me in doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area": (1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the following: Select Computer The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer. Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer O Remote computer Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option? Everything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server.
I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah.
Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that?

In my office computer network system (LAN), my Windows XP Pro PC has SQL Server Express and VB 2005 Express installed and I was granted to have the Administrator priviledge to access SQL Server Express. I tried to create a SQLCLR project in my terminal PC. 1) I tried to set up a remote connection to SQL Server Express in the following way: SQL Server EXpress => SQL Server Surface Area Configuration. In the Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connection - local, I clicked on Remote Connection of Database Engine, SQLEXPRESS and I had a "dot" on "Local and remote connections" and "Using TCP/IP only". Then I clicked on "Apply" and "OK" buttons. Then I went to restart my database engine in SQL Server Management. When I went to check SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration, I saw the arrow is pointing to "Service", not to "Remote Connections"!!!??? Is it right/normal? Please comment on this matter and tell me how I can have "Remote Connecton" on after I selected it.
2) After I restarted the database engine (I guess!!), I executed the following project code (copied from a book) in my VB 2005 Express:

I've seen the following error posted when people try to connect to their server via their applications but didn't see anyone having problems when trying to connect with SQL Server Management Studio Express. Am I missing something here? This is the error:<<An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)>>The server is not remote so I don't see why I need to enable remote connection. I am also using the default connection settings.
I had some issues on my server and had to uninstall .Net Framework 2.0, SQL Server 2005 Express, and SQL Express Toolkit. I installed SQL Server 2005 Express and it seemed to be ok.
Then my problems all started when I tried to install SQL Express Toolkit because I needed to install DTS Wizard again, and it errors out and wouldn't let me install it. So I uninstalled everything that's listed above again.
I then tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express again, and on the second from last screen, while its listing all the components and configuring them, I get the following error as it's configuring the last component... which was the SQL Server Database Services.

On my home machine without permanent network connections enabled, I cannot get the Management Studio connect to the database server. Always get this error:
Cannot connect ot MPLIAMSQLEXPRESS

I have used the SQL Surface Area Configuration Tool to reset the defaults to allow remote connections, stopped and restarted the server, but still get the same message.
