I recently started using SQL Server Management Studio and I do not have the import/export option under all tasks. Is this because SSIS was not installed. Can I download and install just the DTS system?

Thanks.

How Do I Export My Database From SQL Server Management Studio Express

Aug 9, 2007

HiI am using SQL Server Management Studio Express to make my databases but I noticed if I make my database in Visual studios and go new Item and make a new database I see it in app_data folder and server express tab and if I make it in SQL Server Management Studio Express I only see it in the server explorer. So if I have to move my files to another computer how do I move my database easly with SQL Server Management Studio Express? Since when you make it with the visual studio the file gets stored with all the other files of your project so if you move it all to another computer you prob won't run into a problem. So how do I make it that so I can do everything in SQL Server Management Studio Express(since I like working in it) then export it into a file that I can then go into my app_data folder and add it is an exist item?  Thanks

SQL Server Management Studio Express - Import Data...?

Jun 14, 2006

Hi, I have Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express and do not see how I can enable the Import Data... feature which I have seen on the regular Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio version.

Basically, if I right-click on a database, I'd like to use the Import Data... function which should be found in this menu under the Tasks... item. The Import Data... menu choice is visible just below the Generate Scripts... choice in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio but not in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Can anybody tell me if this feature is available in the express version. If not what are my options in order of least cost. Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio is really beyond my ability to purchase.

Thanks for your advice!

How Do I Import Data In SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005

Mar 8, 2008

I am still a bit of a noob with SQL, but, when I use Enterprise Manager with my SQL 2000 server at the office, it is pretty simple to import data from pretty much any data source. I have not been able to locate the Transform facility in the 2005 express software that I downloaded onto my home pc (to help me learn SQL). Did I not install something that I need? or am I just missing what I am looking for? The net question is, how do I import data?

Thanks,

Import And Export Wizard: Transferring Multiple Tables From SQL Server 2005 To SQL Server 2000

Jun 15, 2007

Hi!

I just used the SSIS Import and Export Wizard to copy 50+ tables from SS05 to SS2K.

I found that the wizard created a package that I could not figure out how to edit, e.g., to change whether or not it had to CREATE a table, or just use an existing one. (I created some problems by manually editing the receiving table names to be ones that already existed -- but the original names it had did not exist, so it knew it had to create them. What I should have done, and eventually ended up doing, was scroll through my list of tables in the "receiving" box; I just figured editing the name would be faster, not realizing what problems I would create for myself.)

Anyhow, now that I see the complex package that the wizard creates, with a LOOP over the 50+ tables, I would like to know how/where in the package it is storing the information about the tables to copy.

Basically the wizard creates the following Control Flow tab entries (in processing sequence order):

an Execute SQL Task: NonTransactableSql
an Execute SQL Task: START TRANSACTION
a Sequence Container: Transaction Scoping Sequence, which contains
an Execute SQL Task: AllowedToFailPrologueSql
an Execute SQL Task: PrologueSql
a Foreach Loop Container, which contains
a Transfer Task with an icon I did not notice in the Toolbox
an Execute Package Task: Execute Inner Package
an Execute SQL Task: EpilogueSql
an "on success" arrow to
an Execute SQL Task: COMMIT TRANSACTION
an Execute SQL Task: PostTransaction Sql
an "on failure" arrow to
an Execute SQL Task: ROLLBACK TRANSACTION
an Execute SQL Task: CompensatingSql

Where, and how, can I look within this package to see the details about the tables I am transferring? I see that one of the Connection Managers is "TableSchema.XML" -- but it points to a temporary file on my hard drive, that I presume is populated by the package. Where does it get its information?

This is certainly much more complex than the package I would have written, based on my limited knowledge of SSIS. I would have been inclined to create 50+ Data Flow tasks, one for each table.

So now I'm trying to understand why the Wizard created this more-complex package.

Any help will be appreciated, including references to non-Microsoft books/websites/etc.

Thanks in advance.

Dan

Import Existing Database Into SQL SERVER EXPRESS Management Studio Express

Feb 18, 2008

Hi,

I am a newbie so i apologies beforehand for any mistakes i make on this forum.
Anyway, i created an asp.net website using the MS Visual Web developer tool. This has a couple of SQL SERVER databases within it.
I then latervinstalled the SQL SERVER management studio express in order to manage the SQL SERVER DBs that i had as part of my website but they do not appear within the management studio db list.
As this is the express version, is there anyway of importing the existing SQL SERVER dbs that i have to the management studio so i can manage them from there?

SELECT 'Bye now', 'Bye'

No Import/Export Option In Mgmt Studio Express

Dec 27, 2006

Hi,

I just installed SQL Server 2005 Express. I would like to import tables from
another DB, and I read in the help files that I just need to (1) right-click on
a non-system database in Management Studio Express, and (2) select Import/Export
under the Tasks menu.

I tried this, but my Tasks menu only contains these options: Detach, Shrink,
Backup, Restore, Generate Scripts.

I googled for "sql server 2005 "no import" tasks", and it appears that a
couple of people have had this problem -- the only solution I read was to
install the "Workstation Components," but I already have, and still no luck.

Any idea what I need to do? Thanks!

Creating Tables Via Management Studio

Feb 3, 2008

I am hoping someone could lead me in the right direction on how to figure out why my version of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition is not working correctly. Here is my issue.

1. I've created two users: normal and superuser and associated the user to the new database. (I don't see any problem here just wanted to state two new users were created.)
2. I've created a new database (TestDB) as sa using the default seetings.
3 Next I want to create new tables in the new database. I've right-clicked on tables directory under the new database for creating a new table inside the Object Explorer Window. I get the below error when I do

Object reference not set to an instance of an object. (SQLEditors)

at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.VSIntegration.Editors.VsDocumentMenuItem.CreateDesignerWindow(IManagedConnection mc, DocumentOptions options)

I was thinking something was wrong with the database so I ran sp_helpdb <database_name> and I don't get an error.

Thank for taking the time to read my post. I appreciated your time and any suggestion you could offer.

Instead of going up to the school i opted to do it from home and start over. Well I am wondering if there is a way to copy all the tables that i have created on my home computer and just import them into the database on the server at school. Hope this isnt confusing. Anyways, this forum always has helped me in the past, so i am confident someone will be able to point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

Tables Don't Show Up In SS Management Studio Express

Nov 8, 2006

Hi Folks,

I have a strange problem where I run SQL Scripts to create tables in SS Management Studio Express.

The Scripts run OK but the Table names don't appear in the left-hand Object Explorer window.

I know they are created because I checked with Toad and I can also INSERT and SELECT data from them.

How do I get them displayed ?

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks very much.

Management Studio - How To Index Tables Based On Query - Please Help

Mar 20, 2007

We are using SQL2005.
I have a stored proc that runs a Select query based on a complex view.
The sproc has two input date parameters (StartDate and EndDate).
We are experiencing SQL timeout problems when the sproc is run with certain Start and End Dates.
We have run the SQL Profiler and created a trace (trc) file (We've used the 'Default' trace configuration).
We have used the trace file in SQL Server Management Studio to try and automatically create indexes on some of our tables.
Unfortunatly SQL Server Management does not make any index recommendations.
I think we are not capturing the right information in our trace file to allow SQL Server Management Studio to do its job.
How do I use SQL Profiler to capture a trace of my sprocs query, so that it can be used by SQL Server Management Studio, to recommend index changes?
Any help appreciated.
Reagrds,
Paul.
