I have a package which imports text files in a directory. The problem I am having is that the text files have differing numbers of source columns. Can anyone example me some script which handled differing numbers of source columns for a dts package...
I'm new to SSIS, and trying to automate data imports from text files. The text files I'm importing always contain a fixed set of columns, or a subset of those columns. If I include a subset of columns in the import file (and exclude others), the data doesn't import...I assume because the actual file doesn't include every column defined in the flat file source object?
Is it possible to accomplish this without dynamically selecting the columns, as indicated here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms136020.aspx

it's very helpfull, but my question is if there is a way to split variable into columns if I don't know how many columns I'll have? It could be 1 or 2 or 3 and etc.
I've got a database with an unknown number of columns. Hence, the column names are also unknown. What's the easiest SQL to present the values in each column and the column headings?
Name Description Date Question Answer Customer A Profile Assessment 01/01/2015
How complex is the structure?
Customer A Profile Assessment 01/01/2015 The total value of assets? Less than GBP 1 million
Customer A Profile Assessment 01/01/2015 The volume of transactions undertaken? Low (-1 pmth)

I have installed sql 7.0 with sp1. when I check the files I saw to more file extra i.e. distmdl.mdf and distmdl.ldf along with system and pubs and northwind database files.
Can any one tell me what are these(distmdl.mdf and distmdl.ldf ) files. Thank you!!!!!
I have a single table that consist of 4 columns. Entity, ParamName, ParamsValue and ParamiValue. This table stores normalized Late Fee related parameters for apartments. The Entity field contains a code that identifies the apartment complex. The ParamName in a textual field that contains the name of the parameter that the other 2 fields define the value for; ParamsValue and ParamiValue. If the Late Fee parameter (as named in ParamName is something numerical then the value for that parameter can be found in ParamiValue else its in ParamsValue.
I don't know if 'Pivot' is the correct term to use for describing what I am trying to do because I've looked at the Pivot examples and I don't see how that will work for this. Using the Table and data as provided below, how would I construct a query so that I get 1 row per Entity in which the columns are the ParamsValue or ParamiValue for the ParamName listed in the column header (for the query)?
Below is the DDL to create the table and populate it.
USE [DBA_UTIL] CREATE TABLE [dbo].[PARAMEXAMPLE]( [Entity] [varchar](16) NULL,
I'm using MS Report Designer 2005 and have created a report that uses a cube, with a dimension set up to convert null values to unknown (nullProcessing = UnknownMember).
When I create a parameter using the checkbox in the graphical design mode's filter pane, Report Designer automatically sets the constrained flag, eg:
When running the report and selecting the 'Unkown' value from the parameter list, the error 'the restrictions imposed by the CONSTRAINED flag in the STRTOSET function were violated' occurrs.
How can I prevent the constrained flag from being used, or am I doing something wrong with converting null values to 'Unknown'?
This is what I want to do:1. Delete all tables in database with table names that ends with anumber.2. Leave all other tables in tact.3. Table names are unknown.4. Numbers attached to table names are unknown.5. Unknown number of tables in database.For example:(Tables in database)AccountAccount1Account2BinderBinder1Binder2Binder3.......I want to delete all the tables in the database with the exceptionof Account and Binder.I know that there are no wildcards in the "Drop Table tablename"syntax. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to write this sqlstatement?Note: I am executing this statement in MS Access with the"DoCmd.RunSQL sql_statement" command.Thanks for any help!
ISSUE: ==================== In SQL 2005 (sp2) I get the following error when preforming a bulk insert with an associated xml format file: "Could not bulk insert. Unknown version of format file"
Question: ==================== I am unsure what they mean by "unknown version". Specifically the format file in question was created using bcp. Also the entire table scenario was created from a msdn example.
Any ideas? have you seen this before?
NOTE: i can reproduce this issue outside the example but will refer to msdn considering it is simple and easily reproducible.
Scenario ==================== I can reproduce this error with the BULK INSERT example discussed on msdn (example A) http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191234.aspx
TO REPRODUCE:
* In short the table structure is: Person (Age int, FirstName varchar(20), LastName varchar(30))
* Data File Template: Age<tab>Firstname<tab>Lastname<return>
* Here is some the actual sql statement that pulls this all together BULK INSERT mytestnames FROM 'C:datatestexampledata-c.Dat' WITH (FORMATFILE = 'C:datatestexamplefmt.Fmt');

when trying to Ãmport files to our database server from a client, I keep getting an error:
- Validating (Error) Messages Error 0xc00470fe: Data Flow Task: The product level is insufficient for component "Source_txt" (1). (SQL Server Import and Export Wizard)
Error 0xc00470fe: Data Flow Task: The product level is insufficient for component "Data Conversion 1" (175). (SQL Server Import and Export Wizard)
... doing the same import when logged on the server, hasn't been giving me any errors, how come. I can from my client without trouble import tables from other DB servers but when ever it is files it won't do it.
I tried as mentioned in other threads rerun setup to re-install SSIS, but as it was already installed it wouldn't re-install. My next move would be to make a clean install, but not sure it would help, as I think this is a buck.
I am looking solutions to import csv data into my SQL database table. BUT we want to collect the data from specific columns in the csv file, (NOT the whole csv file) into SQL Database Table.
I have an excel source which is a 41 column sheet. The excel filepath is stored in a table and captured into a variable. The excel source import is contained within a foreach loop and will loop through each file and continue until all the excel files are processed. It works fine until it gets to the last file. The import then fails with the following error:
The column "F42" needs to be added to the external metadata column collection. The column "F43" needs to be added to the external metadata column collection. The column "F44" needs to be added to the external metadata column collection. The column "F45" needs to be added to the external metadata column collection. The column "F46" needs to be added to the external metadata column collection. The column "F47" needs to be added to the external metadata column collection.
Now when i open the excel sheet and hit CTRL+END the cursor goes to a column 6 to the right of the last column with data in it, effectively column 47 where column 41 is the end of my data.
I guess that the jet engine is trying to import these additional columns but because i am not expecting them there is no destination set up for them in the OLEDB destination and susequently the metadata needs to be added. I do not want to do this as these are excel files originating from the client and i cannot control how many additional columns they are going to "add".
Does anyone have any ideas as to how i can solve this? Is there a way of identifying the last column with data and only importing those columns?
Thanks in advance for any help or experience of this issue
This is my first real exposure to using SSIS's Import Export Tool.
I am trying to create a package to move the data from a number of tables in SQL Server into a duplicate database in Oracle. I am invoking the Import/Export WIzard from within the Management Studio. I am using the SQL Server native client on the SQL Server side and the Microsoft OLE DB driver for Oracle for the Oracle database. Both of my tables have unicode data types. On the SQL Server side I have columns defined as NVARCHAR and on Oracle the same column is defined as NVARCHAR2.
When I initially select the table for export the wizard assumes that I want to create a new table. The new table has the correct column name, column order and data types (NVARCHAR2). I cannot tell it to append the data. If I add the table owner to the detination table name or use the GUI to pick it with the table owner...the data types for the NVARCHAR2 columns go away. I cannot edit the data types at this point and if I continue, SSIS barks at me that it doesn't know the data types of those columns. The problem also occurs if you use the wizard from inside of the BIDS. It seems to be OK with the data type unless the table pre-exists. This seems un-useful to me.
Is there a way to avoid this in the Import/Export Wizard? Am I doing something wrong?
I get the following error when I use SQL Server 2005 Import/Export wizard to extract more than 255 columns from an excel file;
TITLE: SQL Server Import and Export Wizard ------------------------------ The preview data could not be retrieved. ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Too many fields defined. (Microsoft JET Database Engine) ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------
Similar to a previous post (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=244646&SiteID=1), I am trying to import data into a SQL Table.
I am trying to program a small application that will import product data obtained through suppliers via CD-ROM. One supplier in particular uses Fixed width colums, and data looks like this:
Example of Data
0124015Apple Crate 32.12
0124016Bananna Box 12.56
0124017Mango Carton 15.98
0124018Seedless Watermelon 42.98 My Table would then have: ProductID as int Name as text Cost as money
How would I go about extracting the data with an XML Format file? I am stumbling over how to tell it where to start picking up data for a specific column. Is there any way that I could trim the Name column (i.e.: "Mango Carton " --> "Mango Carton")?
I don't know if it makes any difference, but I've been calling SQL from my code by doing this:
Code in C# Form
SqlConnection SqlConnection = new SqlConnection(global::SQLClients.Properties.Settings.Default.ClientPhonebookConnectionString); SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand();
SqlConnection.Open(); cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); SqlConnection.Close(); RefreshData(); I am running Visual Studio C# Express 2005 and SQL Server Express 2005.
I need find out the number of columns in flat file before i process that particular file.I have file name in @filename variable and file path is @filepath variable.But do not not that how i will check the column name in before i will process that file.
@filePath = C:DatabaseSourceFilesCAHCVSSourceFiles And i am using for each loop container to read the file one by one and put the file name in @filename variable.and my file name like
Now what i have to do is i need to make sure that ID,Name,City,County,Phone is there in flat file.if it is not there then i have to send mail to client saying that file is not valid.I need to also calculate the size of flat file.
I have to load on SS2012 hundeds of excel files produced by an application over the last five years, during time few columns have been added to the initial set.I created on SS2012 a table to match with the full set of columns and want to load all the files inside the table leaving the missing cells to NULL. I think SSIS can do the job but every trial failed do far.
We are building an application with a database that contains Jobs. These Jobs have properties like Name, Code etc. and some custom properties, definable by the application admin. For bulk import of Jobs, we want to allow the import of an Excel sheet with the columns Name, Code and a variable amount of columns. If the header names of these columns in the Excel sheet match the name of a custom property in the system we want to add the value of that cell into the database as property value.
In our Data Flow of our Import Package in SSIS we added an Excel Source that points to a test excel sheet with the Name and Code columns and €“ for this example - 3 custom property columns (Area, Department, Job Family). When we configure the Excel Source in the Excel Source Editor, we have the option to select the Columns from the Available External Columns table. But here lays the problem, we do not know at design time, what custom property columns to expect. We DO expect the Name and Code columns, but the rest is uncertain at design-time.
That raises the question: Is there some way to select all of any incoming columns (something like a SELECT * in T-SQL)? This looks like a big problem since it would mean that the .DTSX XML that is being generated at design-time would need to be updated at run-time to reflect the variability of the columns that might be encountered while reading the excel sheet.
Then, we thought, we could add a Script Component to our data flow that passes some kind of DataSet (or DataReader) in which we can walk through the columns ourselves? But then still, we miss the option to include ANY of the columns while reading an Excel sheet (or any other datasource by the looks of it)
We are aware of the option of optional columns in combination with the RaggedRight option, but it seems that we would have to put all of the columns of a row in just one column and then extract all the columns later with Derived Columns. But then, since the source import file is being prepared by an application admin, we want don€™t want to burden him with this horrendous task of putting everything in one column.
We would like to have some way of iterating through all the columns, either in a Script Component or maybe with a Pivot/Unpivot mechanism.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Are there other options we should have considered?
I have a excel sheet with some data and blank columns. I have a ssis package using to import data from excel to sql table. For blank excel columns it is importing as null instead i want to show them as '0'. If data comes in it should update the data.
We have found that using the SSIS "Import and Export Wizard" using the "Microsoft Excel" data source that there appears to be a maximum column length of 255 characters for any row.
Even when defining the destination table columns as nvarchar(4000), the wizard fails with the errors shown below.
We have found no workaround except manually changing the imput data. There doesn't appear to be any "Advanced" options for the Excel importer as there are for the flat-text importer. So, no question here, just posting the bug so that *next* time someone searches the web for an answer, this post comes up

edit: After searching further this is documented under "Excel Source" in BOL which provides a registry-based workaround. I guess the issue is that the wizard considers truncation to be a 'fail' case and there's no easy way to override this behaviour, specify the column types nor determine which line is in error)
Truncated text. When the driver determines that an Excel column contains text data, the driver selects the data type (string or memo) based on the longest value that it samples. If the driver does not discover any values longer than 255 characters in the rows that it samples, it treats the column as a 255-character string column instead of a memo column. Therefore, values longer than 255 characters may be truncated. To import data from a memo column without truncation, you must make sure that the memo column in at least one of the sampled rows contains a value longer than 255 characters, or you must increase the number of rows sampled by the driver to include such a row. You can increase the number of rows sampled by increasing the value of TypeGuessRows under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftJet4.0EnginesExcel registry key. )
I'm trying to use the Import/Export Wizard as I used to, as a handy tool to figure out what a series of T-SQL statements (in an SSIS package) is doing - or, if I'm lucky, what on earth the original dev intended them to do.
Version: SQL 2014 64-bit running on Win 7 64-bit
The code is pretty dreadful:
SELECT DISTINCT on one set of column names, join this set to another table but not on exactly the same set of column names, embedded (SELECT MAX(bla) FROM SameTable WHERE [match to outer set on another set of columns] GROUP BY [hey, yet another set of columns!]) inside the SELECT column list... and it all goes to a nasty #Tmp, which is then abused with further bad code further down.
Imp/Exp is always handy to quickly get the intermediate results into an auto-created real table, so I can figure out exactly what the effect of this is. I use it to export from the database back to the same database, but to a persisted table.
This time (first time with SQL2014) it's not working. The source is "write a query" (paste the actual query). The destination I set to a new table. The auto-generation of the new table creates every column as type date. Not surprisingly, this doesn't work, as the original data is mostly not of date time.
i unstalled my sql server and installed it again, and i want the old database. so how i can i import the old database file .mdf, ldf here. i tried to copy this 2files in to data folder, but its not showing database files in the server.
please help me out,i havent taken any backup before uninstallation
Im looking to write a DTS script to import a CSV file into an existing table. I have made sure that all columns correspond. I ideally want to create a stored procedure and a variable to be entered as the file name.
I'm new to the SQL environment and am looking for some help. I have a client that has a CSV file that we need to import to a table but we need to make this part of an existing job. I'm wondering if anyone has any scripts for importing a CSV file into a DB. I've looked at the Import Wizard but don't think that is going to work the way I want it to.
Env: SQL Server 2000 on in WIN NT 5.xJob: import mutiple flat files into several tables daily.Catch: one or two of the several flat files might be empty.First thought/test:Use [first row as fields] option for the import process.Problem, DTS can't complete (as a package).As an alternative, I could probably detect if a file is empty thendecide what to do with it, with VB activeX, it might be feasible,question, VB has a command for "FileExist", how about "FileLen" or thelike for determining the length of a file?TIA.
