Import PARADOX Problems
Jul 20, 2005
Hello,
I've the following problem. I've to read out the data of a custom
application. I think (I'm not sure) this application is using a
Paradox DB to store it's information. I don't know it exactly cause
I'm not familar with paradox at all, but I've found files like *.db,
*.mb, *.px, *.xg*, *.yg* !!!
I need the infomation from this files to combine it with other data
stored in SQL 2000. I'm tried DTS to import the Data but I've got an
"Microsoft JET Database" Error telling me that the table could not be
found or that the table has not the asumed format. It depends on which
*.db File i try to open. Description: Error calling the OPENROWSET
method on the provider.
My Questions, are there some special drivers i need, not included in
MS MDAC Components or must I use a complete Databaseserver in the
Backgroud hosting the DB Files. My developer station has the custom
application NOT installed. The db files seems to have no password set.
I've got the same error when using MS Access to import the data. I
only set the path to the dictionary where the files are in but leave
username and password blank.
HOW TO GET THIS DATA OUT ???
Thank you
Tony

Hi,
I'm trying to import a Paradox 8 db into SQL Server 2000 using DTS but the list of data sources in the connections dialog only caters for version 5.x or older. Does anybody know how to get the data source for v8?
If not, is there any other quick and efficient way to import a paradox 8 db as I have to import around 15 of them to do.
Thanks

hi all,
The PATINDEX function is not working with the image datatype in SQL Server.
The books online says that you can use PATINDEX with the image datatype.
Unfortunately it seems to be big lie.
How can I get the functionality of PATINDEX worked.
This is how I placed my SQL Query
declare @p binary(16)
select @p =0xFFFFF30A000000008400000001000000
select patindex('%DEFG%',image) from image where textptr(image) = @p
The error I am getting was
Server: Msg 288, Level 16, State 1, Line 4
The PATINDEX function operates on char, nchar, varchar, nvarchar, text, and
ntext data types only.
Why this is not working, according to Books online
Thanks for your time
bye

I am updating a Sql Server 7.0 DB to Sql Server 2005 Standard
I have to update Sql Server tables with Paradox 4.5 (DOS) data,
with DTS in 7.0 this was no problem.
In Visual Studio I use the OLE DB Jet 4.0 driver with the extended property "Paradox 4.x"
The package runs well if there is no Memofield or the Memofield has only a few characters.
If there is an Memofield filled with more than 250 Characters the preview and the data flow faults.
If I use "DBASE IV" on a dBase-table there is no error, but the NTEXT-Field in Sql Server has only one character " "
What can I do to get Paradox-data with Memofields?
Other problem:
I am missing the OLE DB Jet 4.0 Data Source in the Import/Export-wizard in
Sql Server Management Studio.

I have a Paradox file which has 270 thousand records. If I open this db file through a paradox viewer it shows the correct number of rows.
I have an SSIS package which is suppose to read this db file and insert it into the SQL 2005 table. But when I execute this package it goes into a loop, reading the file over and over again. The package fails after inserting some 10 million rows giving the error msg 'Not enough space on temporary disk'.
On examing the data transfered into SQL there are duplicate rows.
I also used the import export wizard (thinking there might be some error in Package code) provided by SQL to transfer the data from .db to SQL but it has the same result(goes in a loop).
I would appreciate any help in this problem. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks

We used to use DTS to read Paradox files. This is something we do regularly. DTS has a native Paradox driver. This seems to have disappeared in SSIS.
Can anyone recommend the best way to read Paradox Files with SSIS?

Hi,
I have been told, I will have to transfer some paradox data into sql server 2005.
What is the best way to do this? i.e. if SSIS can be used, then what will be the source? I ask because there does not seem to be a source for Paradox.
Any thoughts please?

I've been programming in Paradox since DOS, but one mail-order database is getting rather large (100K client records, and associated orders, etc).
Our client wants us to move to Filemaker. In fact he'd like to have a 3rd party write the programme and me maintain it. The current package has been written & maintained by myself, with an awful lot lot going on in the Object PAL code.
I already have a copy (legal) of SQL Server & 10 licences for Access, and think that's a better option to re-develop in (although I could do with some training in both).
What are the pros & cons for each app, and what would people recommend. I'm going to cross-post into Access, Paradox & Filemaker forums to get an equal view.
Thanks

Hello All,
I know nothing.
I am helping a friend, current database Paradox 7.x, custom app as I am sure they all are. I wanted to convert this DB to SQL or Access(MS)I do not have Access, but I have SQL 2000. I used the import/ convert tools within SQL, looked good to me, no errors etc.
I thought life was good. Now try to view, look at the data the way
users could. In the SQL manager, I can see tables, and stored procs, and lotsa cool stuff. I try and install SQL client on a PC to view. It basically extends the Admin tools to the deskop PC. How do I use an SQL conversion to realize the needs of the user interface. I think I need what is called a front end. You can stop laughing now.....
Anyway what direction should I take
to update this antique, no support Paradox DB.
Thanks, Dan T

I've never really setup or used MS SQL Server (just a couple hours, oneday, several months ago). I think MS SQL Server has the ability to use"linked tables", like MS Access does. Is this correct? What I want todo is have an MS SQL Server setup, which compatible applications cantalk with, but I want the data to come from a Paradox database. I canuse any MS SQL version, whatever would work best. I'm not sure aboutthe Paradox version, I know it is an old DOS version. I can't justconvert the data to another format, because Paradox still needs to useit.I tried using MS Access before, with ODBC drivers it *should* be ableto work with the Paradox data. However, I ended up with lots of datacorruption. I'm hoping MS SQL Server may work better, and not corruptthe Paradox data everytime it is updated.

Hello,
I have SQL Server 2000 and I'm trying to import data from a paradox v5 database. Everything has moved over fine but the data from the blob fields. When I use the import tool and try connect to a paradox blob field, the import wizard does not "see" the paradox blob field. here is and example.
If I have a table with the following fields.
id char(20)
description char(120)
image blob
the ms-sql import wizard sees
id char(20)
description char(20)
I find this very odd, but I do need a solution. Any Ideas?

I am trying to simplify a query given to me by one of my collegues written using the query designer of Access. Looking at the query there seem to be some syntax differences, so to see if this was the case I thought I would import the database to my SQL Server Developer edition.
I tried to start the wizard from within SQL Server Management Studio Express as shown in one of the articles on MSDN which did not work, but the manual method also suggested did work.
Trouble is that it gets most of the way through the import until it spews forth the following error messages:
- Prepare for Execute (Error)

There does not seem to be any method of specifying a number of sessions, so I don't see how to get round the problem.
Does anyone know how I can get the import to work?

Hello:
I am not sure how to implement the following, but I believe it entails using DTS, and hopefully it is fine that I post it here b/c ultimately I will need this backend data for my frontend .aspx pages:
On a weekly basis, I need to IMPORT some data located on a remote Oracle DB into SQL Server 2k. Since there is so much data to transfer, I would only like to transfer the data that is new to the table since the last IMPORT, i.e. a week ago and leave behin the OLD data.
Is DTS the correct way to go or do I have more control via DTS with STORED PROCEDURES? Does anyone have any good references for me?
On a similar note, once this Oracle data is IMPORTED into a certain table, I would like to EXPORT some of these NEWLY acquired rows matching certain criteria into another table for auditing purposes. For this scenario, should I implement a TRIGGER UPDATE event here on the first table?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Hi all,
when trying to Ãmport files to our database server from a client, I keep getting an error:
- Validating (Error)
Messages
Error 0xc00470fe: Data Flow Task: The product level is insufficient for component "Source_txt" (1).

Error 0xc00470fe: Data Flow Task: The product level is insufficient for component "Data Conversion 1" (175).
(SQL Server Import and Export Wizard)
... doing the same import when logged on the server, hasn't been giving me any errors, how come. I can from my client without trouble import tables from other DB servers but when ever it is files it won't do it.
I tried as mentioned in other threads rerun setup to re-install SSIS, but as it was already installed it wouldn't re-install. My next move would be to make a clean install, but not sure it would help, as I think this is a buck.

Hi,I am having trouble importing data from an excel spreadsheet into MSSQL Server 2000 using DTS Wizard. The DTS import process issuccessfull, no errors, but only 50 rows of approx. 1500 rows of dataare imported. I tried to remove 20 rows in the excel spreadsheet inthe interval row 0-50. When i later ran the import, only 30 rows wereimported. I deleted almost every row in the interval 0-50, with theresult of the import having 0 rows imported (but job ransuccessfully). I decided to delete rows 0-100 in the spreadsheet inorder to see if the resolved the problem, but it didn't. As Isuspected something in the excel file to be the cause, I exported theexcel spreadsheeet to a tab delimited textfile, with only one row. ADTS import resulted in importing approx 100 rows, double the amount ofthe textfile, but the other 1400 rows were not imported. The data inthe column is containing numeric values only. Please help me! What could possibly be the cause of DTS skipping rowslike that. DTS doesn't feel reliable at all :/Regards,Björn

Hi,
I've never used DTS before, but would like to employ it to do a rather complicated data import (well complicated in my opinion).
I need to use DTS to import rows from a DBF File into a SQL Table. These DBF files reside on a separate server and can only be operated on once copied to another location so they aren't in an open state. Specifically I want to append the data from the DBF file into a SQL table. That is, a program writes data to a DBF file, and I want to import the new data not yet imported into SQL since the previous import. Another issue is that these DBF files change filenames (table names) every month. In other words, every month a new DBF table is created with the month number in the table name. I would have to import those, but make sure before I do so that all the rows from the previous month's table have been imported and then import the current month. Where I am find myself having the real problem is that in the DBF file, each row doesn't have a primary key I can reference it with. Only way to distinguish one row from another is to reference two columns, a timestamp and account number, those two columns can never be the same in another row. So I am not sure how to keep track of which row to start importing data from the DBF file.
Of course, lastly I'd like to automate this entire process so it happens every minute or two.
Hope that makes sense. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,
I am using bcp utility to import text File data into SQL server table.I import about 50-60 such files. All other files except one file copies less no of rows to the database every time , than it has in the text file. All other files having either less or greater amount of data transfers it properly.I do not know why this happens to only one file.
Colmn delimiter used is | and row delimiters used is .
BCP is being run through a batch file.
Any idea how to solve this?
Thanks & regards

I am trying to centralize event logs with dumpevt to produce csv (comma or tab seperated) files for import via BCP. My problem lies in that it fails to put the CR/LF at the end of the last line.
So I get an "Unexpected EOF encountered" error.
Anyone else familar with this or how I might be able to script an insertion to those files of the CR/LF? Perhaps some way to just script appending a row terminator in the import file?
Any assistance would be GREALTY appreciated.

I'd like to bcp import a file that sometimes misses the last column/s. There's an EOL character instead. For some reason, bcp wraps around, ignoring the EOL character, and continues reading from the next row of the file. Instead, I'd like to replace the missing columns by null.
I've tried using bcp, bulk insert and the DTS Wizard. So far, I've only been succesfull using the DTS Wizard. I also do some other bcp imports, so I'd like to stick with bcp.
bcp table1 in myFile.csv -SServer1 -T -c -k -t -r
myFile.csv looks like... (replaced tabs by ;)
