Data Import From CSV File With DTS (SQL Server 2000)

Oct 3, 2007

Hi All,
I am trying to import data via DTS from a CSV file. I have the "empty" tables already created with proper column names. Now, I have a subset data of each of these tables, which I am trying to import. I am facing problem in that, there is a datatype conflict between the source (CSV file) and destination (table already in the DB). All the data in the CSV file appears to be of DBTYPE_WSTR, where as in the table it is different (some are DBTYPE_WSTR, some are DBTYPE_DATE, and so on). Is there a way that I can import data successfully? This has become a work stoppage issue now. I had to actually go for this approach of creating the empty tables first and then importing data because, the backup file was very very large and could not be copied to our domain. Please help me out in this.

Thanks a lot.
Mannu.

DTS Import Data Problem (exel Into SQL Server 2000)

Jul 3, 2006

Hi all,

I face a small problem in DTS, hope you can help me to solve this issue.

I designed a DTS package to import excel data ( with 4 column ) into SQL server database,The database design for the database table was

column name type length

ID bigint 8

CountedQty decimal 9

Location nvarchar 8

Other nvarchar 50

The DTS package is work and does not appear any error message. But the data in column 'Location' appeared <Null> after import into the database, this issue happen when the excel data was <numeric> value (string value in this data column can be accepted and appear nicely).

Izzit because nvarchar cannot accept numeric value, how can i solve this problem ?

Thank you very much.

Import Data From SQL Server 2000 Incredibly Slow

Sep 6, 2006

I have a problem with bad perfomance with my import of data from a SQL Server 2000 database. I use an OLEDB datasource in my SSIS package to connect to the sql server 2000 database. My 2005 server runs 64bits but i dont think this is an issue. With this configuration the import is VERY slow, we are talking about 40+ minutes to get 3.5 million rows with about 20 columns. When i create a test DTS package on the SQL Server 2000 server itself and run it, its blazingly fast. Has anyone run into something similar?

Data Migration Using Import/export Wizard SQL 2000 To SQL 2005

Mar 16, 2007

I am trying to import data from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005

The Data schemas are the same in both (tables, relationships, key and triggers).

Using the wizard I am trying to import data from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. The issue I face is to manage the Idenity columns. I do not want the identity values from the SQL 2000 DB which may be at say 5000, instead I want to use the identity values from the SQL 2005 database which will problably start at 1

Is there a way to do this, should I use a custom query instead of a direct table dump. If using a custom query do I need to just specify a Select query or does it have to be a specific "INSERT INTO Table ..." type query

If I do import the data directly with Identity "ON" how can I advance the identity column value to current +1 on the SQL 2005 table.

Thanks

DTS Import Of MDB In SQL Server 2000 Drops Memo Field Data

May 22, 2006

I have used DTS in SQL Server 2000 to import an MDB filed (MS ACCESS) of a table. When the table is imported the primary key is lost and the memo field data is completely gone.

I use the tranformation option in the DTS wizard to add the primary key and make sure the data type for the memo field is varchar and has a size of 8000. I need that large size since I am storing lots of html code.

When I preview the data I see the html code that is supposed to get imported. However, when I return all rows from the table in Enterprise Manager the field is empty.

So I tried to manually copy the data from the MS Access Database into SQL Server. Could not figure out if SQL Server has an interface like MS Access to simply copy data into a table. So I linked to the tables from MS Access to the SQL Server table.

When I opened the linked table I see the data in the description field. However, if I return the rows from within SQL Server no data is present.

I have some ASP code trying to read the data in the SQL Server table. However, nothing is returned and when I run the SQL Statement, nothing gets returned. The SQL statement returns all rows. All the other data is present but nothing in the description field.

What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions anyone, please!

TIA

Publishing A View In Excell With Parameters

Mar 9, 2007

Hi

I am publishing a SQL view in excell using the external data/new database query option and accessing SQL server via ODBC datasource defined.

The query I use aggregates data between 2 diferent dates. I am able to pass the initial date and the end date to SQL, but the results are not aggregated becase I am forced to put in the view the GroupBy clause for the field DATE.
Is there any way of passing parameters to SQL (via Excell) and retrienve the aggregated data based on this parameters?

Many Thanks

IMPORT New Data Since Last IMPORT - DTS/Stored Procs?

Jan 7, 2004

Hello:

I am not sure how to implement the following, but I believe it entails using DTS, and hopefully it is fine that I post it here b/c ultimately I will need this backend data for my frontend .aspx pages:

On a weekly basis, I need to IMPORT some data located on a remote Oracle DB into SQL Server 2k. Since there is so much data to transfer, I would only like to transfer the data that is new to the table since the last IMPORT, i.e. a week ago and leave behin the OLD data.

Is DTS the correct way to go or do I have more control via DTS with STORED PROCEDURES? Does anyone have any good references for me?

On a similar note, once this Oracle data is IMPORTED into a certain table, I would like to EXPORT some of these NEWLY acquired rows matching certain criteria into another table for auditing purposes. For this scenario, should I implement a TRIGGER UPDATE event here on the first table?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Import .dat File To SQL 2000

Oct 17, 2005

My company designs our own banking software written in Progress. Currently twice a year (during our releases) we require our bank customers to run a program on their system that pulls certain data and dumps it to a .dat file. This .dat file was then imported (using another progress program) into a Progress database that our development team created (called stats.db) so we could have access to certain information regarding the customer's software/hardware set-up and utilization of programs, etc. This stats.db is now going away as we have a centralized SQL database for all customer information. The new process will be for our customers to send in their .dat files, they would be forwarded onto me, then I will need to import them into our SQL database. I am struggling in finding a way to do this. Our .dat files contain one field that holds the information, therefore the data is not delimited in such a way that I can just pull it into Excel, Access, CSV, etc. How can I go about pulling data out of these .dat files into a view/table in SQL for importing?

I am at a total loss and have spent hours researching this issue. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Import Tables From 2000

Mar 9, 2007

I'm trying to migrate some tables from 2000 to 2005. I used the wizard in SSIS to create a package bringing them in.

The first database I did this on it worked great, in no time.

However, I tried this on another database and I get a LOT of these:

Information: 0x4004800C at {0417E15E-7306-4DAD-BEDD-1FDB17390EB0}, DTS.Pipeline: The buffer manager detected that the system was low on virtual memory, but was unable to swap out any buffers. 2 buffers were considered and 2 were locked. Either not enough memory is available to the pipeline because not enough is installed, other processes are using it, or too many buffers are locked.

Now, some things to note:

1. I'm trying to do about 170 tables at once - although none of them are bigger than a MB

2. Copying files between these 2 servers is also taking a long time

Is it too many tables at once? Is it the actual pipeline between the servers? The message above seems to indicate that it is a problem local to the machine, and maybe our file-copying problem is just another issue entirely.

SQL Server 2000 Database Import

Mar 10, 2005

Help needed!

I am a final year uni student and as part of my project I've developed a .Net site with a SQL Server 2000 backend.

This week a virus hit our house and my PC got infected (despite anitvirus and firewall!). Anyway, I have had to format my hard disk and reinstall everything.

My site is back in the wwwroot folder and looks fine, trouble is I need to get the database back up and running.

Before I wiped the disk I took the .mdf and .ldf files from the data file in the SQL Server folder in Program Files.

How can I get my database backup and running.

Ive tried creating a new database (with the same name as the .mdf and .ldf files) and replacing the default created files with the copies I saved but this didnt work.

Any help would really be appreciated as I have to demo this to my lecturers soon and my whole grade is riding on it! (no pressure)

File Import To SQL Server 2000

Jul 20, 2005

Hi all,I have a file with an extension of .sdf. I "believe" it is a text fileof some sort but I am uncertain. The source agency hasn't returned anyof my calls so I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with this extension?I'd like to import the file into my database - when I use DTS and chosea text format, regardless of what delimiter I choose, the format isstill really ugly. when I pull it up in a huge text editor, it is hardfor me to tell what it is there.I saw in one of my searches that it could be a comma delimited (it'snot) .. could be a unisys file? I know it's not much information to goon - but where should I start in trying to get this into my databasewithout knowing the format?
