Importing Data (Overwrite Any Existing Records)
Mar 19, 2007
Good Morning, I need some assistance with SQL Server 2000 Importing Data.
When I import data from a text on a routine basis, three things must happen:
1. New records identified by primary key get appended to table.
2. Exisiting records identified by primary key get overwritten with new/(updated) data.
3. All other existing records are left alone.
Does anyone know how to Import Records with the following the criteria above? It cannot insert duplicate primary keys by nature, so it must overwrite those records!
This is being built into a DTS Package, but I need to get over this obsticle! Thanks for any guidance!

to export data to an Excel format, overwriting or deleting the existing Excel file.
Thank you,

I have an existing table I need to add data to. The data is in a text file, and the existing table already has data in it (I don't want to delete this I want to add to it).
I used Microsoft's import utility but this created a seperate table with generic fieldnames (column01, column02, ect). Is there a step in this wizard I missed?

I have an excel file that contains column A with names of components and products followed by column B which has each respective quantity on hand. I want to import that data to our website's SQL database that has a products table with a column, Pf_ID, that has only product names not component names and In_Stock which contains out-dated information that I want updated from column B of the excel file.
I think I've figured out how to use DTS and update the two fields, but I'm afraid that when everything runs new entries will be created with component information. Is it possible to specify that only rows where Pf_ID matches some row in column A that same row's column B will be used to update the data in In_Stock. I may have just made things too confusing than they need to be, but I don't have much experience with EM or Excel.
I'm also considering trying to write a macro that will match Pf_IDs in an exported excel file of the products table and take rows out of the excel file with current quantity information putting them in a new excel file to import into the website's database.
Please help, this is getting really confusing.

Hi guys,
I've been assigned the task of setting up access to our SQL Server 2005 box. A consultant developing for us has accessing to 2 databases and I've set this up fine. It appears however that one of these databases is re-copied over to the server every night to keep data reasonably current.
I'm not interesting in changing this method as I'm not the maintainer (as yet).
Basically I would like to know if I've setup access to this database (it works fine), when the database is updated (with an SSIS package) the account seems to get deleted. Do the original permissions from the source database overwrite those of its destination?
Cheers

Error with SSIS FTP download task:
How to recreate the error:
Download a file using the task.
Go to the file in Windows Exploder and Open the file in notepad.
Copy the last line of text and paste in a few extra rows at the bottom. So if you had 100 rows, you'll now have 103 rows.
Save the file.
Go back to the task and make sure you have "overwrite destination" set to True.
Execute the task.
Go back to the file and look at the bottom of the file. You'll see the same 3 extra rows you pasted in there.
That is not how it should work if it was supposed to be released like that.
Are there any patches that fix this error?

There doesn't seem to be a specific group covering legacy subsystems so I thought I would post this in here.
I have several hundred of these to import that are going to be left to run as they are until such time somebody has the time to migrate them to SSIS.
I have to say I'm not look forward to doing them one at a time using the brain dead UI (it folds up folders behind itself causing another two mouse click between each import). Is there a way of automating this import?
Thanks.

I must prepare a procedure which should export some data from some DB columns, but these data must be encrypted using the OpenSSL protocol, to be sent to an external recipient. This recipient sent to me a "public" certificate in PEM format, to what I understood (it is a file beginning with the expression "-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----", then a long Base64 sequence and then "-----END CERTIFICATE-----").
Then I didn't create the certificate nor I am a certification authority: I just have this public key (or, at least, a file from which I can extract a public key) and I must use it to encrypt data in order to obtain an output which must be analogue to what I can obtain when using this OpenSSL command line instruction:openssl rsautl -encrypt -in CF.txt -out CF.enc -inkey SaniteICF.cer -certin -pkcs
Then the question is: starting from this PEM file and nothing else, can I import it and store an asymmetric key or a certificate in SQL Server and use it to encrypt data to be exported?

I created a plan for a backup. This first truncates the log and after backups the data with overwrite mode and after backups the transaction log with overwrite mode.
The process is using different backup devices for the data and log backups.
The first 2 step is success (truncate and data backup) but in the last step the backup process don't overwrite the backup device. Why ?

I have one table of new records (tableA) that may already exist intableB. I want to insert these records into tableB with insert if theydon't already exist, or update any existing ones with new data if theydo already exist. A column (Action) in tableA already tells me whetherthis is an INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE. I'm able to derive that I can doan insert withselect * into tableB from tableA where Action = 'INSERT'....and I think I can handle the delete. But I'm stuck on the update. How do I do the update? An ordinaryUPDATE statement just won't do unless I use a cursor to cycle throughthe recordset. I want to avoid a cursor.

I have a following problem: I€™m importing records from an Access table into a SQL Server Table. I€™m using lookup to determine if a record already exists in the SQL Server table and in that case I should update the record if it was modified.
I thought of using OLE DB Destination for new records (done, works fine) and OLE DB Command Transformation to update the modified records. It all works but the thing that bothers me is that my table has approx. 40 columns so my OLE DB Command is very long (update table set col1 = ?, col2 = ?, col3 = ? €¦€¦). The other problem is that I€™m always updating all the columns even if only one column was modified.
Is there a better way to update the existing records?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanx
Sara

Hi!
I'm using DTS to import a flat ASCII file. I checked the primary key(telephone number) in the flat file to make sure it's unique. But for some reason when I import is using the DTS package, I'm missing 4 records. I checked one of the missing records and I don't see any problems with it. Is there a way I can debug the DTS package so it spits out a message/reason why it's not importing the record?
Thanks.

Hi,
I'm building a package to import data from a flat file into a Customer table, and I have set up a Lookup to check if that customer already exists in this table, and if so, perform an Update command instead of the bulk load. I don't expect many updates, if any, this is why i just used the OLE DB Command instead of using a staging table.
I've a bit of a problem executing this within a transaction and having the lock table option set on the SQL Server Destination. Is there anyway I can get Transaction support for this Data Flow working, as I want to be able to rollback a complete file/import if possible.
Thanks

I currently have a table called stores. I've just added a uniqueidentifier column called store_guid to the stores table. The table currently has about 500 records in it and now i'm trying to set each store_guid = to a newid(). I've tried using UPDATE stores SET store_guid = newid() . however, that doesn't work because i think it's trying to set each record equal to the same guid using that approach. All i need to do is fill in my new column with new guids. any ideas?
Thanks in advance,

I am using the DTS wizard and having problems importing excel into an existing table.
Problem is that various column in excel are defined as double in the wizard but in my db table it is defined as an integer.
How do I get around this issue so the data types in excel can match up accordingly to my defined data type in my db table?
The wizard does a bad job of guessing the correct data type.
I have heard of using a staging table to import from excel and using that as my source to import into my existing table.

Hi i am getting a weekly transaction file which has two columns trans code and trans date to indicate whether the record is changed, added or modified . and the monthly master file contains blank in these two fields.
How do i update the row coming from the transaction file in the tables which contain the rows from the master file .
to better explain the example is
Master File
ID Name AGE Salary Transcode TransDate
2 dev 27 2777
Transaction File indicating change
ID Name AGE Salary Transcode TransDate
2 dev 27 24444 C 08072007
the ouput should be
2 dev 27 24444 C 08072007
replacing the existing row in the table(updating the whole row)
i have 50 columns in my table and based on the two fields i should replace the rows exisiting in table and if ID doesnot match exist just add them as a new row.
what transformation should i use .... to replace all the columns which have matching ID in table to the current record from trans file and if there doesnt exist matching id just add them as new row.
Thanks...

I wasn't able to figure out the vocab to search for this on usenet.I'm sure it's an easy solution, but I have no experience with SQLServer:Situation:tbl_CompanyDatais a 1735 x 20 table with a CompanyID key in the first columntbl_MergedCompanyDatais a 1735 x 20 table imported from Excel. We found it much easier toenter data into an Excel file.Problem:Keep the CompanyID field in tbl_CompanyData, but replace all the other19 rows with data from tbl_MergedCompanyData, which contains all thetbl_CompanyData PLUS new data that users filled in. At present, therows don't match up, but I suppose I could pre-sort the tables.Preferrably, any solution would be smart enough to find CompanyID N intbl_MergedCompanyData and replace the data in the fifth column intbl_CompanyData where CompanyID is N with data from the fifth columnin tbl_MergedCompanyData.Any thoughts would be appreciated. Please let me know if I canclarify my problem.Thank you,Ryan

I setup this package to import data from a Sharepoint list to a SQL Server data table. The primary key of my SQL table is mapped to the Title column of my Sharepoint list. There is a possibility that duplicate values will be entered in the Title field of the Sharepoint list. So when importing data into my table via SSIS, my package always error-out when there it comes across duplicate values. how you others have managed data integrity when importing from a Sharepoint list with the Title column being mapped to the primary key of a table.

HI,
I have been trying to solve the locking problem from past couple of days. Please help mee!!
Scenario:
--------------
I have a SSIS package in which 2 data flow tasks. 1st data flow task deletes records from a 5 tables and the 2nd data flow task should insert records into 1 of the five tables after the success of 1st data flow task. This scenario runs in Transacation.
The above scenrio in the 2nd data flow task hangs in runtime. It does not complete. with sp_who2 command i could see that there is an intent share lock(LK_M_IS) on the table and the status is SUSPENDED.
I dont know how to come out of this locking. Please help.
Thanks ,
Sunil

Hi :)
I have a website that uses SqlExpress ...on it i have a database that was working ok ...until i made a few modifications to the database (had a few rows).
I have upload the database (only the .mdf file) to the app_data folder ...but now i get this message :
One or more files do not match the primary file of the database. If you are attempting to attach a database, retry the operation with the correct files. If this is an existing database, the file may be corrupted and should be restored from a backup.Cannot open database "ArtWork" requested by the login. The login failed.Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.Log file 'c:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxApp_DataArtWork_log.LDF' does not match the primary file. It may be from a different database or the log may have been rebuilt previously.
I try to delete the .LDF file but it gives me access denied ...i cheched the permissions for the file and everything is ok
How can i solve this??
Thanks and Cheers

I have daily scheduled full backups of each database and log backups scheduled for every 2 hours. My question is should they be scheduled for overwriting or appending? I have always had them set as overwrite, but I don't know if that is correct? Any recommendations would be appreciated
