Ms Sql Mdf Database File Attached Vs Created On Sql Server

May 27, 2007

Hi allI have a question concerning sql database mdf files. In the old days I would user a ms access database. This file would be stored with the actual web files and would utilise a dsn connection. I have noted when designing with vwd 2005 express it allows you to use 2 methods of creating a mdf database. You can either create it as an attachment mdf or you can create it directly using sql manager. My question is, if you create the mdf database as an attachement file can you store it in the same manner as if you where using a ms access database, meaning can you store it with the web site's files so it uses the file storage allocated size and then create a connection similar to a dsn (but for sql) to the isp's sql engine or does it have to be uploaded to the isp' s sql server. The reason for this question is some of my customers do not want to pay the extra cost to have an sql allocation, however I do not want to go back to using old asp methods to create advanced sites as I prefer using stored procedures. Any help will be appreciated

SQL Server DB As Service Or Attached File ?

Apr 2, 2007

Hello,

I was wondering about the principles of SQL Server. In all of my books, they show me to attach the DB, even create the DB through Visual Studio 2005. Which creates a .mdf file and a .ldf file.

Ok, but I cannot open those files through SQL Server Management. The only DB I am able to manage through SQL Server Management is the ones created with it.

So my question is: For a Multi-User type Application, is there a problem to attach a network based file through VS2005, the same way as an access file ?

Again my keyword here is Multi-User. Sorry if this myth be a stupid question but I am used to MSAccess. SQL Server is a lot more complexe and I don't want to start in the wrong direction.

Thank you for your response.

SQL Attached Mdf Database Files VS Database Imported Into Or Created In SQL Server 2005

Apr 8, 2007

Hi all (newbie @ asp.net)(oldie @ ASP 3)What is the purpose of using an attached MDF database files in the App_Data folder on a web site as to importing it into the SQL server directly or creating it on the SQL server. Does a mdf database attached file purely use the SQL server as a connection interface. Is it something similiar to DSN(ODBC) Connections for ms access databases.

SQL Server 2008 :: Automatically Execute Script Once Database Has Been Attached

Jul 29, 2015

our clients have the flexibility to detach and attach databases (I know there are a lot of considerations around this but there is now way of changing it), once they attach a database we need to run some code to update a bunch of values in the database.

Other than creating a SQL Agent job are there any other options available to automatically execute a script once the database has been attached?

Importing Text File Into Database

Mar 31, 2007

Hello Everyone,
I would like to import a text file which contains one string (a large integer) per line not separated by commas or anything else except a carriage return.  Does anyone know of an easy way to store this in a database file?  I'm open to suggestions if there is more than one way to save this kind of information within a database.  I have SQL server 2005 developer edition if that helps in any way.  I'm also starting to learn about Linq so if there is some other way you would store this information for that purpose I would love to hear about that as well.  C# code is preferable, but I can use the automatic translators if that's all you have.  By the way, I'm a newbie to this subject (if you couldn't tell).  Thanks in advance.

Importing Excel File Into Database

Sep 4, 2007

Hi, I am very new to ssis, I am trying to set up a package that I can set to run every hour or so, what it will do is look for all excel files in a certain folder and import them into a table on an sql server.

I managed to get it working but my problem is that my data is survey answers and some columns contain a comment.
I get these files on a weekly basis and some weeks the length of the longest comment makes ssis want to use a different data type for the comment column (sometimes it wants DT_NTEXT, other times it wants DT_WSTR).
as this column is filled out by a human I guess aposrtophies and other characters may affext this as well.

when I made the data flow task, I used the wizard on a file which contained about 8 weeks worth of data. when I use 1 weeks worth of data where the comment length is very low, the task gives a validation error saying the metadata is out of sync. if I go back and set the data type for that column to DT_WSTR and rerun the task, it works but then when it tries to process a different weeks worth of data it will fail again

here is an example of an error I get when it thinks the data type is wrong.
[Source - 'raw data$' [1]] Error: The output column "Question ID50# (Verbatim)" (439) on the error output has properties that do not match the properties of its corresponding data source column.

I played around with the data types for a while and managed to get it to process the first file and then try to process the secondfile, in the second file it got around the validation but then got this error:
[Source - 'raw data$' [1]] Error: Failed to retrieve long data for column "Question ID3# (Verbatim)".

is there a way to make it recalculate the data types by itself for each excel file?

I am stuck trying to figure this one out.
sorry if I havent provided enough information, I am not sure which direction to head with this

Using Xcopy To Get The .mdf File Of Pubs Database To The App_Data Folder Of A Website Of VWD Express Project

Jan 9, 2007

Hi all,

I have a stand-alone Windows XP Pro PC that has SQL Server Express (SSE) and Visual Web Developer Express (VWDE) programs. The Microsoft "pubs" Database is installed in the SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE). I created a website in my VWDE program. I need the .mdf file of the pubs Database in the App_Data folder of website of my VWDE project. I think that User Instance in my SSE is established. I have studied Xcopy Deployment (SQL Server Express) and User Instance for a quite a while and I still do not know where and how to use Xcopy to get the mdf file of the pubs database into the App_Data folder of the website of my VWDE project. Please help and give me the detailed key steps/instructions about where and how to get the .mdf file of the pubs database into the App_Data folder of the website of my VWDE project via Xcopy.

Thanks in advance,

Importing Date Values From A Flat File Into The Database

Aug 7, 2007

Hi

I am trying to to import a flat file into a table in my database, i get all the values right except for the date, it keeps on inserting NULL values into the date fields.

The date format in the flat file is '20070708' etc.

Does anyone know what i can do to fix this?

I've tried to change the datatype values that it imports, but it still ignores it and inserts NULL values

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Attached .mdf File Security Settings

Dec 4, 2005

I'm having some problems with SQL Server 2005. I installed the Personal Starter kit but don't have the Express edition installed so I attached the .mdf file to SQL Server 2005. That's ok and I also changed the connection string to integrated security.<add name="Personal" connectionString="Data Source=MyTestServer;Initial Catalog=Personal;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>I tried setting the security settings in the Management studio under Security | Logins | BUILTINAdministrators where I select the User mapping and check the checkbox before the Personal.mdf file. But this doesn't seem to do the trick. How can I set the correct security settings?

Add Sdf File To My Project When My Sources Are On Remote Server

Aug 2, 2007

I have an application that runs on a PDA and manage a database (.sdf) file I use C# with visual studio 5.0.
What I want to do is to add the database file (.sdf) to my project files and open a connection to it.
The problem is that all my source file are stored on remote machine and not locally on my machine and the .sdf file is also stored with the project source files.
When I try to add the file to the project I get the following error fro the data source configuration wizard :

"An error occured while retrieving the information from the database"

DRIVE_REMOTE
Parameter Name : N:

I get the same error also when I try to open a new connection to the file from the server explorer. When i copy the file to drive "C" I can open a connection to it with no errors.

Inporting Attached Excel File Into Existing Table Adding Info

Jul 25, 2005

Hi all,I have a problem and need some ideas. What I have done: I created a page to upload an excel file into a SQL Server table along with some customer info (from the login, day, etc.). This excel file contains several rows (some of them may be blank) and columns (also some may be blank). The file is stored in an image object. The file will be checked (they want to do it manually, because contents is a problem). If they say it is OK, I want to run a program to add a record into an existing table with the request no. (from the first table, where the object is stored) and all the information available from the filled rows (first row is header). I have a column, which can be checked, if the row contains data or not.Any ideas?I know how to read from and write the contents of the object to a field in the SQL table. Can I use this? Thanks for any idea / code / link.

Attached Database Showing Read-only

I attached my database to SQL 2005 but it's showing up as read-only for some reason. I've attached this before just fine in another instance of the Vista OS. Why would it attach differently this time compared to all other times and show read only?

The .mdb and .ldf files are not read only if you right-click and check out their properties.

Database Snapshot On SAN Attached Disks

I am in process of moving a SQL 2005 solution from a development box that used local storage to UAT environment with SAN attached storage. The solution uses database snapshots

The database files are on the SAN storage but during testing I was unable to create a Database snapshot on the SAN disk. Creating snapshots on the local disk worked fine.

Is their some restriction/problem in using the database snapshot technology with SAN storage?

Importing Excel File To SQL Server (Opinions Please)

May 18, 2005

Dear All,
I am writing a procedure to import daily the customer excel file to SQL server 2000, I managed to do that where the excel file will be imported directly to the SQL server after creating the new data table, & then I need to read the created table & import it row by row to my original data table. The problem:
I.        The original excel file has the following:a.       a protection passwordb.      The contents has two merged headers (which effecting the import procedure)c.       And last line is a totals line
Before importing the file I have manually to remove (a – b & c)!!
The Solution:
II.     I am trying to find a way to do the above points automatically inside the project.
III.   Also I thought of importing the excel file to a DataGrid first then:a.       Let the user approve the file contents &b.      Remove manually point (I.b.) above (I don’t now how yet, need to try it).c.       Then import the DataGrid the the SQL server.
I think I prefer solution (III), any suggestions are highly appreciated
