Importing Excel 2007 And/ Or DBF Files Into SQl Server 2005

Greetings,
I'm having a tough time importing some of my legacy database into sql.
I have a number of dbase (IV) files I need to get into SQL. I have tried building a SSIS package with either an foxpro oledb connection or a jet 4.0 one, none of them work bec. of inconsistencies in the data format in my tables (e.g. date fields, etc).
I have tried to save the .dbfs as excel 2007 files, taking advantage of the larger space that comes with '07. Problem is you can't use the import/export wizard with 2007 for some reason and I haven't been able to create a package with the access 12 oledb as I have read.
I have to get some crucial data out of that old system and into the new one and I can't seem to be able to import them properly.
Any hints on what I should do ? (maybe I'm doing something awfully wrong)

When importing an .xlsx file the number of columns stops at 255. Does anybody know how to get all columns imported?
Tried saving the file as text and that allows me to import all the columns but it would be much easier to do this directly from Excel.

Hello,
i have made some Data Mining Model Examples in Excel 2007 (not temporarily!). They where there after leaving an re-opening Excel. I have used them several times. Then I want to look, if I can see them also via SQL Server Managment Studio in the Analysis Services. There where nothing in the DMAddInDB in Analysis Services.
And after this, in Excel my DataMining Models have disappeared and all Models i have made since this disappeared also.
Perhaps I have destroyed the database. But will this happen every time? Can I share Data Mining Models I have made with Excel with Projects in SQL Server Analysis Services?

I have about 50 Excel files from which I have to import data with some transformations to Sql Server. My first approach was to use Excel Source component in a data flow to read the data . However, as it turned out column X in some files was being converted to a DT_NTEXT blob and in other files it was mapped to WSTR. The reason I guess is because column X contained string of varying sizes - some greater than 255 characters while others less than 255 ( max was 3000 ) . My package used a ForEach loop to iterate over all the Excel files in a directory and feed that to the data flow task. I played around with IMEX and TypeGuessRows setting but they didnt help me . In my second approach I used 2 Excel sources ; one set up for the blob type and the other for the string type . I joined them together using a precedence contraint. This worked but I then figured out that there were 2 other columns in my data that exhibited the same behavior. I couldnt continue with the mulitple Excel source approach cause I would then have 8 Excel source components. Finally, I played around with Execute SQL Task . I selected the columns X,Y and Z , initialized 3 variables of type Object , used a ForEach to enumerate over the dataset and feed that to a script component that converted the objects to Strings. This seems to work for all types of data in the mulitple columns.
My question - has anyone encountered such problem ? What was the solution ? Just thought I would share this with the rest of the community. I cant seem to recall what the exact error I was getting ..but it was something like "cant convert long data to string " or something . I also keep getting annoying error icons in my Excel Source components used in the foreach loop. Something to do with acquire connection failed even after I set DelayValidation to "true".

I have a client who is sending me 800+ excel files each month with sales data. Each of the files is identical in structure, but has sales data for different stores. I receive all these files at the same time.
Is there a method with Data Transformation Services where I can have it work off of all the files in a given directory. I can set up DTS to work off of specific Excel files with no problem, but what I would like to do is set up a DTS so it could pull from each of the 800+ files.
Is this possible, or do I need to look at a solution outside of SQL to consolidate the Excel files first?
The Excel file would have columns similar to the following: store_id, zip_code, sales, transactions.

I'm trying to import a database. It seems my most likely route is via Excel, so I've moved my tables in there.
Then I tried setting up Excel as a linked server as described in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q321686
My linked server gets created apparently with no errors, but I can't see any contents when I click on it in the object explorer.
Anyone with more clues than me?

Hi,
I would like to import an Excel spreadsheet into SQL Server 2005. I can do this quite easily using the Import/Export wizard, and have each row in the spreadsheet transfer to a new row in the database table.
However, I want to import the first few columns of the spreadsheet row into one table (called Products), but put the remaining columns into a related, three-column table, called Product_Details. In the Product_Details table, one column would hold the spreadsheet column value, the other column would be a FK integer value linked to the PK in the Products table, and the third column the primary key as normal.
So, somehow, I would need to get hold of the primary key value when the first spreadsheet columns are inserted into the Products table and then insert the remaining columns into the Product_Details table with two values per row - one value being the spreadsheet cell value, the second being the primary key of the new product in the Products table.

The above script is working fine with Excel 2002 but not with 2003. Can someone please provide me exact script of importing data from excel 2003 to sql server 2005. I have also tried the Linked server option but it is still giving the same error.

I have several regular reports that are produced by different offices that I need to import the data from. Â The challenge lies in the fact that the reports are not simply columns of data. Â Some cells are labels, others contain data, and some contain both. Â Also, the formatting of the reports isn't strictly uniform from office to office. Â Is it possible to read this kind of sheet? Â Excel data sources seem to just define everything in a column as data, and that doesn't work for me. Â Is there an alternative, or perhaps a more manual way of defining what cells contain data?

I can't figure this one out...
I have an Excel spreadsheet (Excel 2003 format) with a column of values. The column is formated to General (although I've tried it formated to text). The values are alphanumeric. However, there are a few values that are completely numeric.
Example:
_ITEMNUMBER_
1-528
K214-5
184PR
45678
As can be seen, the last value is completely numeric. I am importing into a table with one column that is formated as nvarchar(50).
I use dtswizard.exe and do a simple import into the table and the alphanumeric values import just fine but anytime a value is completely numeric it has a NULL value in the table instead of the value that should be there.
I've tried changing the format of the column to nchar, char, etc, etc. Always comes in NULL.
Any ideas?

I made a package in SSIS to copy some data from SQL server 2005 SP2 to Excel 2007. The package works fine, but generate errors. If I replace the OLE DB destination for Excel 2007 with a Excel destination for Excel 2003 then they errors don't appear. The problem is that I have to use Excel 2007 because the data contains more than 65000 records. I thought maybe it was to much date, but if I limit the amount of data with top 100 it also generate errors.

I€™m having a problem with Excel 2007 DM and SQL 2005 and I hope someone out there has a solution.
Consider the following environment:
Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista, Excel 2007, Data Mining Add-in, SSAS 2005 (with session mining models enabled, an AdventureWorksDW cube deployed and drill-through actions available).
Now take the following steps:
1. In Excel 2007 set up a connection to SSAS
2. Connect to the cube and create a new pivot table report (drag and drop whatever you like)
3. Right-click on one of the cell values in the data region and either select a drill-through action, or, select Show Details in the context menu
4. Ensure that you have at least 10 detailed records that are generated on a new worksheet page; you should have a time-based column in your detailed records
5. Select the table of detailed data, then select the Analyze tab (within the Table Tools grouping) which appears in the topmost menu above the ribbon
6. Click the Forecast button in the ribbon and choose both the field which you want to predict as well as the time-based column (from step 4) as well as the number of time periods to forecast
7. Finally click OK.
1. Having followed these steps on both WinXP SP2 and Vista, I keep coming across the exception: HResult:0x800A03EC. Any ideas as to why this exception pops up? If I was using a normal table of data (which was not generated from a Show Details or drill-through action), then the Forecast button works fine.
I googled it and thought the localization settings for SSAS 2005 and Excel 2007 needed to be the same (initially they weren€™t). I€™ve tried removing the auto-filters which appear atop each column in the detailed data table prior to clicking the Forecast button, and, I€™ve also tested for a series of data across a number of time periods with the same result.
Also, a colleague of mine discovered that the column headers that appear by default from a drill-through start with "$[", and, in removing them the Forecast function appears to work.
I would have thought there would be a seamless transition in Excel 2007 between data retrieved from a cube and the DM Add-in featueres (or at the very least, a more meaningful exception message than the one presented).
Is there something I€™ve missed, or, is there a KB article I haven€™t come across yet? As I know for a fact that the problem is reproducible, is there a fix to this problem on its way to us? Is there a useful workaround that doesn't require manual intervention?

I hope this is the right forum for my question.
I'm developing a website for a Prepaid Calling Cards distributor. Each of the cards they sale have a list of the countries the card is good for. I need to import this data into my countries_rates table. The file they are giving me is an excel file that contain 3 colums (fields)
1- Country-Name
2- Rate
3- Card_$_Price
these files contain aproximaly 400 rows so it will be a hasle to have to insert it manually every week.
In my web application I need to create a form where the user will select the card from a dropdownlist and then find the excel file to be imported for that card.
I would like to know how do I do that with Visual Studio 2005, SLQ 2005 and C#
please direct me to some links where I can learn how to do this or please send me some code snips I can see how is done.

I have an excel file which has 15 sheets and want to import them into one table in one process rather than having to create 15 table and then joining into one table.

I have reinstalled Office 2007 (to changre the license key)
after this, the data mining excel add-in failed to load.
the "COM add-ins" displays: "not loaded. a runtime error occurred during the loading"
reinstalling the add-in doesn't solve the problem
installing the 2008 version don't solve the issue too.
There is no other information, what can I do to solve the issue?

I spent some time in understanding where could be the error. I traced it to the following place. If you take a look at the Lesson#2 in creating a simple ETL package in SSIS, using foreach loop container to import files into SQL server, as soon as I finish going through steps in configuring the file connection manager to use the variable for connectionstring, it immediately disappears. I repeated the tutorial three times exactly as I pointed out and when I reach to this step of configuring file connection manager for connectionstring, it takes the path and when I start debugging it, I get this error. When I go and check if everything is Ok, the connectionstring value is empty.
Why the value in connectionstring disappears?

Hi,
Can anyone help? Need to upload a text file to a sql database but keep getting errors.
I'm creating a page that will allow users to to bulk import and update to a MsSql database. The users provide a text file every so often with new/update information. So i want to use a DTS package to transform the infomation, and create a table in the database, then check against existing/non existing records, if the record exist, update it, if not insert it. I'm using Visual Studio.Net, ASP.Net and coding in VB.Net.
Anyone know where i can find documentation/code regarding the above?

Hello,
I receive 4 .csv file downloads periodically (3 times per day) via email from our corporate database. I open each file in Excel, save as excel files, import to Access, replace the previous tables...run action queries, generate reports combined with production data from CSRs and supervisors. ALL DONE MANUALLY!!!
Here's where I am now:
-I've recently switched over to SQL Server Express.
-Used SSMA to bring tables over from previous Access database.
-Exercised the option to LINK these tables to the original Access database.(I'll explain why in a moment)
-Created ADPs for front end data entry use.
-Imported old Access database forms into the new ADPs previously used in Access.
-Connected to the new Server Express.
-I've eliminated my concurrent user problems by doing this.
HOWEVER, I am still bound to using old Access/Jet database to generate reports based on periodic downloads from corporate .csv files.
Here's the question:
What is the best way to import the csv files being sent to me via email into SQL Server Express? I've tried DTS. Seems to me you can't save AND actually use the packages later since it's the Express edition..... Importing manually 4 files, 3 times per day is a very tedious option I'd like to avoid. Any ideas?
Oh, by the way. Corporate has told me they would be willing to post the files to an FTP site instead of emailing the files. That's about as much help as I'm going to get from them. Can SQL Server Express be set up to run stored procedures (triggers) on a hot folder?

Hello,I nee to write something that will transfer excel data into an SQL Servertable.I have for another database application I wrote have it importing Excelspreadsheet data using cell by cell, row by row method. This is fullyautomated so the user can choose whatever spreadsheet they want to importand press a button which sits on a VB6 frontend.This has been good for that situsation but it can be very slow when thereare large amounts of data to process.I am just wondering are there any faster, better alternatives that wouldstill enable a user to select which excel spreadsheet to importas the application I am writing now will sit on a website frontend, usingASP, and I'd really like to try and speed things up if I could.any advice would be much appreciated.Thankyou,Oh, and hello, this is my first post here!Jayne

Hi,
I am new to integration services. I need to import data from excel sheets to a sql server 2005 tables. I have 3 sheets which should be loaded into three different tables in sql server. I need the connection strings to be dynamic as the excel file names will change daily.Please get me some samples or some links to study to solve the above problem.

I work for a company that makes heat transfers for the imprinted apparel market. We're developing a database of merchandise images for all of our non-design inventory. Using Access we're going to be inserting thumbnails of psd (photoshop) files. We're wondering if there is any way to import multiple psd's into the sql server database into matching records like matching a column named "filename" and the actual filename of the file without having to upload each file individually. We want to be able to dump the files from the database of the matching records, also. This way, once our catalog designer has found which designs they need to put into the new catalog, it will dump the psd's for us. The same for our staffer who does color separations.
Any suggestions out there? If you need me to post further of what we're trying here, I will. This is for the bossman.
