Importing / Exporting Data Using Ssms
Jan 13, 2007
I have installed ssms, and the toolkit.
When I right click on a database I don't have Import/Export under tasks. However I do have C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90DTSBinnDTSWizard.exe installed and can invoke it manually.
What do I need to do to get it to show up in tasks?

Normally, whenever I've wanted to export data to a file (which is very rare that I do), I have used SSMS. Yes, I'm sure there's a way to do it in T-SQL, but I've just done an export using the SSMS wizard.
But that appears to me to no longer be available in SSMS 2012. So, how is it done from SSMS 2012? Or is it only done using T-SQL/DDL?

I am not quite sure whether it is possible to export a sql table farmat into a , for instance, dbf format table using solely sql statements from my VB application. We know that ACCESS has this profile , however I have no success regarding it for my 7.0 SQL version.

I have a web application I created in asp.net + sql2005 and am deploying a genercized version of it to multiple clients. I have created a script which dynamically generates a database to a server and creates all of the tables, procs, and views. I now need data from the old database, which will be imported into the new database. It's basically default users, lookup values, etc. What are some methods of getting this data out of the old server and into the new server? I was thinking about generating flat files with the data, then writing code to loop through and insert the data, but it seems very tedious. Do I have any other options? I cannot use Backup and Restore because I have no access to the new sql server's filesystem.Thanks.

dBase importing was handled by the import/export tool provide with SQL 2000. I see no way to import .dbf files in sql 2005 except to load the sql 2000 tools. I realize that the dbf format is old, but there is still a lot of stuff that comes in dbf and sql2005 needs to support this.
Where can I find an importer for dbf to sql2005?
I keep hearing lots of work arounds but nothing to explain why a common data format can't be easily imported/exported in sql2005 tools. Whats the deal?

Hello Everybody,
Not sure if this is the correct Forum, anyway lemme me know your views. I
have SQL Server running in two remote machines (in different geographical
locations). I need to import a database from one SQL Server
installation to another installation. What is best possible solution:
1) Transfering the .mdf and .ldf file from one installation to another installation
2) Generating the records of all the tables in the database to a common
file format CSV and then loading it in destination database. If this is
ok then how to generate import and export data using CSV format
3) Any other options?

This may be a simple question with an obvious answer, but I'm fairly new to databases and I can't seem to find the right procedure.
I created a database on my machine. If I want to copy the information from this database (columns, tables, and entries specifically) from my machine to another SQL server on a different machine, what is the best way to do this without manually re-entering all of the information?
Is there a simple export/import of a database for transferring it from one server to another?
Thanks,

Hello,
I'm fairly new to MS SQL & I have a problem copying tables from one d/b to another. When I do an import or export select Copy tables, the tables & the data get transferred, but all the Identities are set to NO. My D/Bs have 188 tables & it's a pain to reset all of them manually.
Is there a setting I don't know about that will transfer the tables & maintain the Identity?
(I'm using SQL Server Management Studio 9.0)
Thanks for your help - Breck Cogdill

I'm really new to the whole database deal (as well as VB.net) - specifically with the capabilities surrounding VB and SQL Server 2005. My question is open to any recommendations...
What I have is an application that a user uses to create 'new' products. They are presented a form to enter the information regarding the product they wish to create. They enter the details of the product and also locate an image that represents the product, too. Currently, this application saves the product information (including binary image data) into a SQL Server 2005 Express Edition database. This application and database reside on a client pc. What I need to do is to be able save updated and newly created product data into a file of some sort. That file will make its way to a memory stick (USB) and then be transported to a 'field' machine. Quite simply, what is the best way to do this? Are there walk-throughs on this sort of thing? The target database is also SQL Server 2005. I thought I'd post this question on here to get the best design ideas... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am currently redirecting lookup failures into error tables with ErrorCode and ErrorColumn. It works fine until I want to transfer data into the archived database. The SSIS pacakage generate by SQL Exporting tool is throwing an "duplicate name of 'output column ErrorCode and ErrorColumn" error. This is caused by oledb source error output. The error output automatically add ErrorCode and ErrorColumn to the error output selection and not happy with it.
I think the question is down to "How to importing/exporting data when table contains ErrorCode or ErrorColumn column?"

Can anyone tell me how to load it or where the documentation is online?

I am using the following query to export data from sql server to ms access in export data wizard:
SELECT * FROM myView where myID = 123
Order by varcharColumnName1,varcharColumnName2 ,intColumnName3
This query will fetch about 7, 00,000 records.
SQL server 2005 shows the correct order, but Data in access table shows Incorrect data.
Please give me the solutions.

We are currently utilizing a risk management software that is using a SSMS back end. However the database is extremely normalized and hard to find data. I am looking for one particular item (column) to bounce against another report I created, to find the delta's.
I found an XML string that looks to have data captured in it, almost like VB marked up in XML. This XML has the column name (source and the desitination column). However when I go into the other tables I am unable to find either column?
Could it be that the application is referencing the XML strings in the column to present the data through the application? Is this some sort of way to prevent people from back dooring their data? Maybe I just missed the table with the column name.

I have a sql server 2008 backend with an Access 2007 frontend database. Each time I export a query I get the following error:
Code:
Microsoft Access was unable to append all the data to the table.
The contents of fields in 0 record(s) were deleted, and 1 record(s) were lost due to key violations.
*If data was deleted, the data you pasted or imported doesn't match the field data types or the FieldSize property in the destination table.
*If records were lost, either the records you pasted contain primary key values that already exist in the destination table, or they violate referential integrity rules for a relationship defined between tables. Do you want to proceed anyway?
I don't know what if anything is actually missing because of the amount of data is more thant 6000 records. It seems everything exported but I would have to comb through the data to be sure.

Hi,
Does anyone know if it is possible to point data that underwent the "merge join" transformation (in one data flow) to the following data flow? I don't want to recreate all that merging, sorting and calling the same sources again in the following data flow if the data that I am using exists in the previous data flow. The merged data is simply too big to export to an excel file, so does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

is there a way to see the data of a table variable in the SSMS debugger? For example, if I set a breakpoint in SSMS and look at a populated table variable named @MyTable in the Locals tab at the bottom of the IDE, a value of "(table)" is displayed. There does not appear to be a way to expand or drill into this variable in the debugger to see the data. Do you know if there's a way to do this through the debugger or do you use an alternate approach when using the SSMS debugger?

I have a windows 2008 with SQL Server 2008 R2 VM on Azure. I am trying to connect to the SQL server for the first time using SSMS, but have not been able it. I have a VPN tunnel, so I am connecting using Windows authentication. The error I get back from SSMS is:
Login failed for user 'domainusername'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456).In the event viewer I see this error message: Login failed for user 'domainusername'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>]
I have done the following:
- created an endpoint for port 1433
- opened port 1433 in the firewall
- Ran the MSSQLSERVER service as the build-in users Network Services, Local System, and Local Service, and as a local and domain administrator, with the same exact result each time.
- I get the same result trying to connect locally or remotely.
- I get the same result trying to connect using sqlcmd.

I setup this package to import data from a Sharepoint list to a SQL Server data table. The primary key of my SQL table is mapped to the Title column of my Sharepoint list. There is a possibility that duplicate values will be entered in the Title field of the Sharepoint list. So when importing data into my table via SSIS, my package always error-out when there it comes across duplicate values. how you others have managed data integrity when importing from a Sharepoint list with the Title column being mapped to the primary key of a table.

I have one column in SQL Server 2005 of data type VARCHAR(4000).
I have imported sql Server 2005 database data into one mdb file. After importing a data into the mdb file, above column
data type converted into the memo type in the Access database.
now when I am trying to import a data from this MS Access File(db1.mdb) into the another SQL Server 2005 database, got the error of Unicode Converting a memo data type conversion in Export/Import data wizard.
Could you please let me know what is the reason?
I know that memo data type does not supported into the SQl Server 2005.
I am with SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition with SP2.
Please help me to understans this issue correctly?

We have a daily process, which copies millions of rows of data from one DB to another over Linked Server. Just checking on the best practise, are there more efficient ways than the Linked server to copy millions of rows of data from one DB to another? I checked bulk insert but that transfers the data from the file to DB not DB to DB.

I have created a simple package that uses a sql command to pull data from an oracle database and inserts the data into a sql 2005 table. Some of the data fields that i am pulling from contain two digits after the decimal point, however this data is lost when it gets into sql. I have even tried putting the data into a flat file, and still the data is lost.
In the package I have a ole db source connection which is the oracle database and when i do the preview i see all the data I need. I am very confused and tried a number of things to get the data into sql, but none work. Any ideas would be very helpful.
thanks

Hello everybody,
I was wondering if there is a way to export and recode data at the same time with SQL.
For example I have gender information coded as 1 or 2 in my table and I need to upload the information to a different application that needs M or F. Is there a way to export to a new table and recode at the same time ?
I'm still pretty new to it.
Thank you.

Hi all,
I recently found out that there is no easy way to distribute a MSSQL 2005 database to MSSQL Server 2000. Most forums that I have read say to use the DTS facility to import the data into the SQL 2000, however this is not an option (for a variety of reason I won't go into).
The next best option in my mind is to script the entire database, including the data into one or a few script files then run them on the SQL 2000 server to recreate the database. Unfortunately, exporting the data, what I thought would be a fundamental feature, isn't part of SQL 2005.
So does anybody know of a good (free) scripting program that will allow me to export the entire database from a server? I've tried:
- Free program from the CodeProject.com (program dies when there's more than 5000 lines) http://www.codeproject.com/dotnet/ScriptDatabase.asp
-SQL Scripter www.sqlscripter.com (Doesn't script table which don't have primary keys, and produces a script for each object instead of just a single file)
I'd probably like a program which only creates a single script, as the database has over 200 tables and I don't want to have to go through this process everytime I need to distribute the DB (which will be often).
The only other option I can think of is a program which converts an SQL 2005 backup to a 2000 version.
Thanks for your help!
