Importing Data From Oracle9i CLOB Column To MS SQL Server Text Column

Jul 20, 2005

Hi everyone,

I encountered an error "Need to run the object to perform this operation

Code execution exception: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION

" When I try to import data from Oracle to MS SQL Server with Enterprise
Manager (version 8.0) using DTS Import/Export Wizard. There are 508 rows
in Oracle table and I did get first 42 rows imported to SQL Server.
Anyone knows what does the above error message mean and what causes the
rest of the row failed importing?

Thanks very much in advance!

Importing From Xls That Has All Data In First Column

Sep 19, 2006

I have a spreadsheet that has all of the data in the first column. The data is delimited by asterisks and there are no column headings. My goal is to import the data into a SQL table. I get the error message "External table is not in the expected format" when I try to select the name of the Excel sheet in the Excel Source Editor. I tried reading using a flat file connection instead of Excel connection, but that didn't work.

In Excel, I can use the Text to Columns feature to convert the data to columns in the spreadsheet. But I have to go into the file manually to do that. Is there a way in SSIS to do the same thing automatically? Or is there a way to save the XLS as a TXT file? Then, I could just use Flat File Connection to read the delimited data.

Thanks.

Problems Importing New Column Data

Nov 29, 2007

I am trying to import a table from a remote database which has a new column added, which I want along with the rest of the data. When I try doing the import via the wizard (Tasks -> Import Data...), the option to drop and re-create the destination table is disabled. Under "Mappings", the newly added column appears as the last row, but for the Destination column, it says "<ignore>" and presents no other option.

How can I bring this new column over? I've checked the table via the dependency viewer, there are no objects which depend on it and no objects on which it depends.

Importing Data In Table With Identity Column

Nov 13, 2000

Whenever I import (or even append from another table) data to a table that has an Identity column, I get an error: Cannot insert NULL values in Identity column.

Isn't the Idenity column supposed to incement automatically without me having to provide a value? Using INSERT provides an Identity value automatically, using import however doesn't.

How can I overcome this problem? (I now delete and recreate the Identity column - really BAD practice!)
Thank you.

Full-text Of XML Data Column

Mar 23, 2004

Hi gurus

A developer created a stored procedure that search in a huge table in a column with ‘like’ statement.
I know that the best solution in most case is use of full-text.

But the content of this specific column is a XML data and Full-text don´t find words as desired.

For example:
Table content:
ID = 1
DsColumn = ´<Name>BETH</Name>´

select * from tbResp
where DsColumn like '%BETH %'
Results:
IDDsColumn
--- ---------------------------------
1<Name>BETH</Name>
1 row(s) affected

select * from tbResp
where
contains(DsColumn, ' BETH ')

0 row(s) affected

Can anyone give me a better solution?

How To Return FTS Results From Varchar(MAX) Or Text Data Type Column?

Aug 15, 2007

I am unable to get FTS working where the column to be searched is type varchar(MAX) or Text. I can get this to work if my column to be indexed is some statically assigned array size such as varchar(1000).

For instance this works, and will return all applicable results.

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TestHtml](

[ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,

[PageText] [varchar](1000) NOT NULL,

CONSTRAINT [PK_TestHtml] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED

SELECT * FROM TestHTML WHERE Contains(PageText, @searchterm);

And this does not. It returns zero results what so ever.

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TestHtml](

[ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,

[PageText] [varchar](MAX) NOT NULL,

CONSTRAINT [PK_TestHtml] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED

SELECT * FROM TestHTML WHERE Contains(PageText, @searchterm);

Could someone please tell me what I need to do to enable FTS on varchar(MAX) or Text columns?

Update On Large Table - Change Data Type For Text Column

Dec 10, 2014

I need to update a large table, about 55 million rows, without filling the transaction log, in the shortest time as possible. The goal is to alter the table and change the data type for Text column from VARCHAR(7900) to NVARCHAR(MAX).

Since I cannot do it with an ALTER TABLE statement (it would fill up the transaction log) I'm thinking to:

- rename column Text in Text_OLD
- add Text column of type NVARCHAR(MAX)
- copy values in batches from Text_OLD to Text

The table is defined like:

create table DATATEXT(
rID INTEGER NOT NULL,
sID INTEGER NOT NULL,
pID INTEGER NOT NULL,
cID INTEGER NOT NULL,
err TINYINT NOT NULL,

[Code] ....

I've thought about a stored procedure doing this but how to copy values in batch from Text_OLD to Text.

The code I would start with (doing just this part) is the following, but maybe there are more efficient ways to do it, or at least there's a better way to select @startSeq in the WHILE loop (avoiding to select a bunch of 100000 sequences and later selecting the max).

declare @startSeq timestamp
declare @lastSeq timestamp
select @lastSeq = MAX(sequence) from [DATATEXT] where [Text] is null
select @startSeq = MIN(Sequence) FROM [DATATEXT] where [Text]is null
BEGIN TRANSACTION T1
WHILE @startSeq < @lastSeq

[Code] ....

Data Conversion Failed. The Data Conversion For Column Value Returned Status Value 4 And Status Text Text Was Truncated Or On

Jan 7, 2008

Hi Experts,

I am extracting data from SQL Server 2005 to flat file destination. I am using SQL Command to specify the data selection query. One of my query uses Replicate function to derive a column value. When I execute this package it fails with the error "Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "value" returned status value 4 and status text "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page".

The reason for the problem is that, it is taking the InputColumnWidth of the flat file destination as 8000 and I specified the OutputColumnWidth as 4.

If I change the OutputColumnWidth to 8000, it is working without any error but resulting in the column width of 8000.

I tried using DerivedColumn Transformation's Type cast and DataConversion Transformation but still I am getting the same error in the respective Transformation components.

Can anyone suggest how to solve this issue.

I hope this is the correct forum to be posting this in but,

we have a database setup on a linux box that we are trying to get rid of and replace w/ sql server 2005 once we have the data off that machine. The problem that we are running into when we try and import data from that machine is, we get the following message during the DTS import / export wizard:

'Error Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers'
'Error Description: [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-00942: table or view does not exist'
'Context: Error calling OpenRowset on the provider'

Hopefully this is just a silly mistake on my end but I have been searching around and have not been finding anything too helpful.

does anyone have any advice??

Problems With Text Column In SQL SERVER 2000

Aug 4, 2005

Hi,I am trying to access the data inside a text column in the database and display it on a page. The problem is, I cannot see the full data when I execute the stored procedure in SQL Server and also on the asp.net page.it seems Sql server clips the data if it is more than 3000 characters. Is there anyway I can see the whole data that is stored in that particular column.I do not understand why asp.net is also clipping the data. What container can I use to display the text? I have tried Literal, string, placeholder but nothing shows the full text that is supposed to be in the database.I have seen some people using byte arrays but I am not sure how I can use them to display data on a page. If anyone has done this before or had a similar problem please reply back.Thanks.

While inserting information into "XYZ_Entity" entity user can select the required dealer group from domain base Dealer Group values. Is it possible, if yes then how?

Insert Data Into A Destination Column Which Doesnt Have An Input Column

Feb 27, 2008

Hi, I was wondering how I can complete a column (which doesnt have an input one) with data.
For example:

I have a sql query which bring data of 3 columns

ID | FISRT NAME | LAST NAME
1 MIKE MORGAN
2 SARA JOHANES

So, I will insert that data in a FLAT FILE CONNECTION MANAGER, which I configured with 3 columns and I did the corresponding mapping in the FLAT FILE DESTINTATION.

Now, If I add one more column in the FLAT FILE CONNECTION MANAGER, I will not have it mapped to a input one, obviously. So, what I need is to add one more column to the flat file destination and complete it with zeros values in it.

Probably I can solve this part by introducing a DERIVED COLUMN and there I can configure the zeros that I want to add to the column. But I'm not sure if I can do that without having a input column.
So, the question will be, how can I add one column to a flat file which doesnt have a input and introduce any value that I want to it?
Hope I was clear
Thanks for your help.

Column Data To Column Heading By Dynamic Pivot Maybe

Feb 27, 2008

Hi there,
I am a new member of this site and I am not very much aware of T-sql's working.
My question is what if I need to get one column's data to be the heading of another column.
To be very exact I have a school's database. The table I am talking about is of the results of students. The table contains Student ID, Subject ID, Total marks of the subject, Marks obtained in the subject. Now I want to print a report by generating data from this table. Right now the data is something like this
StuID - - - SubID - - - -Tot - - -Obt
1 - - - - - - -1 - - - - - - -50 - - - 38
1 - - - - - - -2 - - - - - - -50 - - - 41
1 - - - - - - -3 - - - - - - -50 - - - 42
1 - - - - - - -4 - - - - - - -50 - - - 40
2 - - - - - - -1 - - - - - - -50 - - - 35
2 - - - - - - -2 - - - - - - -50 - - - 40
2 - - - - - - -3 - - - - - - -50 - - - 42
2 - - - - - - -4 - - - - - - -50 - - - 41

StudentID and SubjectID fields are related to other tables so I can get the names from there but when I need the report I need the data in the form of
StuID - Sub 1 - - - Sub 2 - - - Sub 3 - - - -Sub4
1 - - - - 38 - - - - - - 41 - - - - - - 42 - - - - - - 40
2 - - - - 35 - - - - - - 40 - - - - - - 42 - - - - - - 41

The Subjects can be different for different students so the query should be dynamic instead of hard coding the names of the subjects. I hope I am clear with my question. The subjectIDs or their names will become the headings and they will contain the obtained marks for that subjects in their columns just for the reports. I have also checked the PIVOT function but was not able to do what I wanted.
Thanks.
