this is my current set up:
sql server 2005 express edition,
sql server management studio express,
oracle tables (original source data currently linked through odbc)
adp database file (new db where i'm trying to import the above oracle tables)
i need to import (or make copies) on a weekly/daily basis, of several oracle tables into a new adp database.
what is the fastest option? some of these tables hold over 1m records.
i have also heard of "linked servers" and "dts", but would like some experts advice before starting looking into this.

DTS Oracle Connection - Importing Data
Dec 9, 2003I have SQL Server 2000 and am using DTS to simply import some data located on a remote Oracle DB.
If I have the following information:
TNS Name:

And I also have the name of the Table.
Using the DTS Wizard, on the Choose a Data Source screen, I pick the following:
Data Source: Microsoft ODBC Drive for Oracle
Server:
Username:
Password:
I don't know what I should put into the other fields, given what I have above, i.e. what to put in for Server, Username, and Password! Or should I use a different procedure to import this Oracle data? I am almost positive I was not supplied the username/password. I was told I could connect given the above TNS information. What do you all recommned?

I created SQL Server package and schedule the job. SQL Server allows us to connected different database for e.g. for oracle using "Oracle Provide for OLD DB" to retrieve our database. A link is create between this database which move the data to SQL Server. I'm sure there is no issues in the link, as I'm using it to retrieve several oracle database which contains both Arabic and English data.
But after Importation it is showing Junk values. Please advise me what step I should take next.

Importing Data From Oracle To Sql Loosing Data After The Decimal Point
Jun 18, 2007I have created a simple package that uses a sql command to pull data from an oracle database and inserts the data into a sql 2005 table. Some of the data fields that i am pulling from contain two digits after the decimal point, however this data is lost when it gets into sql. I have even tried putting the data into a flat file, and still the data is lost.
In the package I have a ole db source connection which is the oracle database and when i do the preview i see all the data I need. I am very confused and tried a number of things to get the data into sql, but none work. Any ideas would be very helpful.

Sep 9, 2015I have an SSIS package that pulls data from a MYSQL DB (Using RSSBus for Salesforce in SSIS to accomplish this). Most of the columns are loading properly, but I have many columns that I need to convert.
I have been using the Data Conversion dataflow task in SSIS to convert the rows.
I have 2 data conversions that work on most of the columns, but the DESCRIPTION column continues to return an error saying "Cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode types", regardless of what I choose on the Data Conversion task. So, basically I want to dump this column data into a SQL table with NVARCHAR datatypes. Here is what I am doing in my SSIS package...
1) Grab subset of data from SOURCE
2) Converts to TEXTSTREAM. (Data Conversion)
3) Converts to STRING. (Data Conversion)
4) Load Destination table. (OLE DB Destination)
I have also tried to simply convert the values to STRING, but that doesn't work either.
So, I have 2 Data Conversions working here that process most of the data correctly. What I can do to load the DESCRIPTION column?

I've had some great headaches with SSIS this morning, which I have managed to get a workarounds for, but I'm not happy with them so I've come to ask for advice.
Basically, I am exporting data from an SQL Server database into an Excel spreadsheet and hitting issues with unicode and non-unicode data types.
For example, I have a column that is char(6) and have added a data conversion step to the data flow, which converts it to type DT_WSTR and then everything works!
However, this seems like a completely un-neccessary step as I should be able to do the conversion in T-SQL - but no matter what I try I keep getting the same problem.
SELECT Cast(employee_number As nvarchar(255)) As [employee_number]
FROM employee
WHERE forename = 'george'
ErrorValidation error. details: 1 [1123]: Column "employee_number" cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types.
I know I have a solution (read: workaround) but I really don't want to do this everytime!
Any suggestions for what else to try?

Apr 6, 2006I have an Excel Source component hooked to an OLE DB Destination component in my SSIS 2005 Data Flow Task. After I mapped the excel columns to the OLE DB table columns i get these errors below. I noticed that for the first error, the Excel Field format (when you mouse over the column name in the mappings section in OLE DB component) is of type [DTWSTR] and the corresponding SQL field from my SQL table that it's mapping to is of type [DT_STR] when mousing over that field in the mappings in the properties of my OLE DB component. All table fields in SQL Server for the table I'm inserting into are of type varchar.

Cannot Convert Between Unicode And Non-unicode String Data Type

I'm having this problem.
I use Visual Studio's, integration project to load XML file into SQL Server. In the XML file, i have defined collumns as string. When i try to load XML file with parts defined in scheme as string, i get an error "cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data type.
Destinated collumns in SQL are defined as varchar and char.

I have spent countless number of hours trying to solve the issue, but to no vail. My problem is SSIS throws "cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types" when i am try to transform data from DB2 to SQL Server 2005. And please note, i tried all possibilities like changing the destination field which is in SQL Server 2005 to nvarchar and also text. But so far no help. And i also looked at previous posts which did not help me either.

Oracle And Unicode
Jun 27, 2006Since the .net oracle providers are the only ones that work in x64 it is extremely annoying that it insists on mapping ALL varchar columns in oracle to wstring. Is there a way to fix this? The oledb providers don't have this problem but I don't like being forced to use the 32 bit runtime as a workaround.

When I made tnsnames.ora in sql machine , it worked fine but when i am using tnsnames file from oracle server then i fiired importing procedure it returns below maintain error :

OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "BI_ORACLE_LS" returned message "Oracle error occurred, but error message could not be retrieved from Oracle.".

Cannot obtain the schema rowset "DBSCHEMA_TABLES" for OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "BI_ORACLE_LS". The provider supports the interface, but returns a failure code when it is used.

The application's backend isa SQL Server 2000 SP3.The concern is, existing business data are stored using collation"Chinese_PRC_CI_AS", i.e. Simplified Chinese. So I thought we need toextract these data out to the new SQL Server which is using Unicode (Iassume it means converting them to nchar, nvarchar type of fields for Idon't enough information from the application side, or is there ageneral unicode collation that will make even char and varchar types tostore data as Unicode?).The problem is what's the best and most efficient way to do this dataconversion?bcp? Mar 8, 2007We've installed the Oracle provider for OLE DB on SQL Server 2005, which has the default collation (SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS), and we've created a linked server for the Oracle 9.2.0.5 database, which has AL32UTF8 as the database character set. We can successfully insert strings into VARCHAR2 columns on Oracle from SQL Server via EXEC SP_EXECUTESQL('INSERT OPENQUERY(...) VALUES(...)') -- as long as the strings (whether selected from NVARCHAR columns on SQL Server or specified as literals with the N prefix during testing) only contain Windows-1252 characters.
If the SQL statement contains a character above U+00FF, the string on the Oracle side is incorrectly/doubly encoded; there are nearly (but not exactly) 4 bytes per character instead of the 1 or 2 you'd expect from ASCII/Latin-1 characters encoded as UTF-8.
We've tried reconfiguring the linked server: collation compatible = false, use remote collation = true, and collation name = Latin1_General_BIN2. But that had no effect.
What is the correct way to do this?

Just checking on the best practise, are there more efficient ways than the Linked server to copy millions of rows of data from one DB to another? I checked bulk insert but that transfers the data from the file to DB not DB to DB.

I have become frustrated and I am not finding the answers I expect.
Here's the gist, we support both Oracle and SQL for our product and we would like to migrate our Clients who are willing/requesting to go from Oracle to SQL. Seems easy enough.
So, I create a Database in SQL 2005, right click and select "Import Data", Source is Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle and I setup my connection. so far so good.
I create my Destination for SQL Native Client to the Database that I plan on importing into. Still good
Next, I select "Copy data from one or more tables or views". I move on to the next screen and select all of the Objects from a Schema. These are Tables that only relate to our application or in other words, nothing Oracle System wise.
When I get to the end it progresses to about 20% and then throws this error about 300 or so times:
Could not connect source component.
Warning 0x80202066: Source - AM_ALERTS [1]: Cannot retrieve the column code page info from the OLE DB provider. If the component supports the "DefaultCodePage" property, the code page from that property will be used. Change the value of the property if the current string code page values are incorrect. If the component does not support the property, the code page from the component's locale ID will be used.
So, I'm thinking "Alright, we can search on this error and I'm sure there's an easy fix." I do some checking and indeed find out that there is a property setting called "AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage" in the OLEDB Data Source Properties. Great! I go back and look at the connection in the Import and .... there's nothing with that property!
Back to the drawing board. I Create a new SSIS package and figure out quickly that the AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage is in there. I can transfter information from the Oracle Source Table to the SQL Server 2005 Destination Table, but it appears to be a one to one thing. Programming this, if I get it to work at all, will take me about 150 hours or so.
This make perfect sense if all you are doing is copying a few columns or maybe one or two objects, but I am talking about 600 + objects with upwards of 2 million rows of data in each!!
This generates 2 questions:
1. If the Import Data Wizard cannot handle this operation on the fly, then why can't the AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage property be shown as part of the connection
2. How do I create and SSIS Package that will copy all of the data from Oracle to SQL Server? The source tables have been created and have the same Schema and Object Names as the Source. I don't want to create a Data Flow Task 600 times.

I am working on a project which involves migration of data from a Rdb database (which is remote )
to a SQL server.
I did a telnet to that machine and took the details of the schema and found there are 12 tables to be migrated,
and some of the tables have as many as 3 million records in it.
I wanted to try the ODBC to migrate. But I didnt find the Rdb option in the list of databases it has.
or can I write it to a flat file and then improt from there.
Please give me some idea on this

I have gone through most of the question posed by people, about importing data from EXCEL sheet to some table using SQL server database. I have a slight variation of this problem.
My excel file contains some information apart from the normal data.
Lets say some 5-6 lines always gives me some info about the data, like its purpose, client info, date etc...
After this INFO my actually data start, which I want to load into table.
I have found some wizard for the same, "EMS SQL MANAGER 2005", which supports most of the file formats, and load data into the database.
But we are planning to not use this tool, instead everything should be done using TSQL.
If somebody can please gives me some idea how this problem can be tackle, it would be a great help. We won't be using any Third party tools, like scripting etc...
We want to stick with just TSQL for this problem.

Importing An Oracle .dmp File Into SQL

Please let me know if it is possible to import an Oracle .dmp binary file into SQL using DTS. DTS has ODBC and OLE DB drivers for Oracle but both require specifying the Oracle database name, user name and password. i.e., it looks like the only way to import the .dmp file into SQL would be to first load the .dmp file into Oracle and then tranfer it from Oracle to SQL using DTS. Is there any way to load the .dmp file directly into SQL?
The .dmp file is a binary file that has been generated from Oracle using the 'Export' utility.
