Indicating The NULL Value In Report Expression Syntax

Sep 12, 2007

Hi,

I would like to know how I can indicate a NULL value in a report expression in SSRS / Report Designer.

I am trying to code :

IIF(Value_A = 0, <NULL>, Value_A)

It may look weird but I am trying to return NULL values when Value_A is 0 (zero), in the sample scenario above.

I have tried using the keyword "NULL", but it is highlighted as a syntax error, and suggested to use System.DBNull. I tried it and then it says that components of the System collection cannot be used in an expression, so I am left drawing blanks.

Thanks.

regards,
Kenny

More Expression Syntax

Apr 26, 2007

Hi,

This is a follow up to an earlier question. I'm having a heck of a time here. What I'm doing is reading a value into a SSIS variable and trying to evaluate it. I know the value is huge (over 4000 chars) and what I think should happen in my package isn't (I guess because this variable is so big).

What I WANTED to do is a straight character check:

@[User::xml_output] == "ABC"

but that wasn't working... so I deceided to try the len function.

However xml_output is too big and it's also not working. How would I check to see if the len is greater than 17 characters? Here is what I have so far...and none of it works.

len(trim(DT_WSTR,18,1252)@[User::xml_output])) > 17

len(trim(@[User::xml_output])) > 17

(DT_WSTR,18)@[User::xml_output] > 17

I just want to trim @[User::xml_output] and see if it's greater than 17 characters. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Phil

Expression Syntax

Apr 26, 2007

Hi,

I'm having some trouble with this syntax:

@[User::xml_output] != "<ROOT></ROOT>"

I have a variable that I KNOW is = '<ROOT></ROOT>' and I've set up a precendence constraint to only go to the next step if the above not true, correct?

Do I need to convert the right side of the equation to a string or something first? Does anybody know that syntax off hand?

Thanks,

Phil

eg Z00001YYY or X00022HHH

Conditional Split - Expression Evaluates To Null

Sep 5, 2007

Hi everyone!

I'm using a conditional split to discriminate modified records. My expression looks like this:
col1_source != col1_dest || col2_source != col2_des.....and so on. I use OLE DB Command afterward to update modified records.

It all works fine if no columns evaluate to null. If any (source or dest.) evaluates to null, component fails.

Any tips how to solve a problem?

It has to work like this:

If colX_source is null and colX_dest is not null --> Update
If colX_source is not null and colX_dest is null --> Update
If both colX_source and colX_dest are null --> No update

p.s. i apologize if a similar thread exists, I haven't found something of use to me.

Newbie Case/search Question In Derived Column Expression Syntax

Feb 6, 2008

Hi everyone,

I am a newbie to SSIS and looking for answer to a simple search/replace style question.

I am building a derived column and looking for some expression syntax that can search for several strings in one column and set a value in a new column.

A bit like a case statement:

CASE ProductLine
WHEN 'R1' THEN 'Road'
WHEN 'M1' THEN 'Mountain'
WHEN 'T1' THEN 'Touring'
WHEN 'S1' THEN 'Other sale items'
ELSE 'Not for sale'
END,

The twist is that 'R1','M1','T1','S1' could feature anywhere in the string that is ProductLine.

Thanks for all your help,

Chris

Download/ Uninstall Problem: Error Indicating Corrupt File

Oct 13, 2007

I hope someone can help me here. Here is some background.

As I was attempting to download SQL Express, the download dialog box timed out. When I x-ed out of the download, Windows XP Professional 2002 threw up an error message indicating that the dialog box was non-responsive, and I elected to close it.

I downloaded SQL again successfully, and installed with no errors. I then attempted to create a new db through Visual Web Developer. Instead of creating a database, Visual Studio returned an error saying that I did not allow for new database objects, and that I should change my permission settings. I could not figure out how to do this, so I uninstalled SQL Express.

After re-starting, I got the following message: €œYour SQL Server Installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with (could not open SQLEVN70.RLL). Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this option.€?

I uninstalled MS SQL again from the Add/Delete Programs on my Control Panel. On re-start, I received the same error again. On my Programs list, MS SQL is not present, there are several MS SQL files in the path C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server.

So I located the Visual Studio uninstall tool and attempted to run it. I received the same error: €œYour SQL Server Installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with (could not open SQLEVN70.RLL). Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this option.€?

Any ideas on how to uninstall the files in my program files so I can load a clean copy of SQL?

Bug In Report Builder When Using Expression

I ran in to a strange problem in Report Builder. I drop a few fields from my Report Model on a simple talbe report. Some of them are straight forwards attributes and some of them are expressions.

Now in the table layout of a report I have say a attribute named as "Account Number". This attribute is actually a field from a table. I change the column header to a two line column header with €œAccount€? on one line and €œNumber€? on second line. No problem, piece of cake.

Now tried the same thing on an expression type attribute, say "Principal Balance". When I split the column header on two line I get this following error.

==============================================================

Semantic query compilation failed: e MeasureNotFound One of the SubtotalMeasures.MeasureName properties of the SemanticQuery refers to the Measure Expression 'Principal
Balance', which does not exist. (SemanticQuery '').
----------------------------
An error has occurred during report processing.

==============================================================

If you read the error you will realize that the query is trying to find an expression named "Principal" (newline char) "Balance" and it fails.

This expression is nothing but a sum aggregation on a field in the underlying table. If I put the "Principal Balance" back on one line report runs like a charm. Also note that exact same report in Designer no issues at all.

FYI: I am in SQL Server 2005 with SP2. (tried it both on Standard and Enterprise versions.)

Report Model Expression

Nov 20, 2006

I'm new to Report Model and trying to create a new expression field with IF condition on related Role's attribute when i do this it gives error "The arguments to the following function are not valid: = (Equal to)" but if put direct Entity's column it works fine.. heres the expression

IF(Activity Type List Value Display Name = "Sick Day", 1, 0)

"Activity Type" is the Role(1--*) in Employee Table, and i'm adding this expression in the Employee Table

are there any sample models that i can download with some complex filters/expressions etc?

Jan 29, 2007

I have a matrix report that has two columns, and one of the colums has the following expression for background color:

=IIF( Fields!Percentile.Value >= .10, "Yellow", "White")

Basically if the percent is greater than 10 highlight the field, for some reason i have some fields that dont show up yellow, see below:

Pad Trailing Spaces In A Report Expression

Sep 14, 2007

I am trying to pad a fixed number of trailing spaces into a report expression, as follows:

Data:

CUSTOMER_NAME-------------MichaelPeterJohn

Result (e.g. with 10 spaces padded, assuming all names are below 10 characters long):

"Michael ""Peter ""John "

Is there an easy way to achieve this ?

Thanks.

Kenny
