Indirect Configuration Of Connection Manager

May 25, 2007

Greetings All;
I am having trouble getting an indirect configuration to work. Can someone offer a hand?

Here's the deal....
I have a package the currently has an OLE DB Connection manager. I have an XML configuration file set up to acquire the connection string. That works fine. I have a package variable that contains the absolute path to the .dtsconfig file.

How can I get the connection manager to read the package variable (which has the path to the *.dtsconfig file) instead of the hard coded value?

Thanks in advance.

Indirect Configuration With ConfigType 'Indirect SQL Server' Fails

Jan 18, 2007

Hi,

I have a package that uses a Configuration of type SQL Server where the property values are held.

This runs successfully using this direct configurations.

When I use an Indirect configuration using an environment variable to point to this SQL Server configuration type the package won't even validate.

The Indirect Configuration is:

[EHC-SQLD-01.].[SSISConfigsDEV];[dbo].[SSIS Configurations DEV];pkgLRD CED Import;

which follows the standard of : db connections, config table, filter

This works by the way on my client but on the dev server the error is:

Error: The connection "[EHC-SQLD-01].SSISConfigsDEV" is not found. This error is thrown by Connections collection when the specific connection element is not found.

I've tried every combination for the env variable using quotes, full computer name etc (I thought it was the hyphens in the name), but can't seem to get it to work.

I've also tried as both user and system env variables but made no difference (which one should we use for SSIS anyway as BOL doesn't state this ?)

Appreciate any help. I'm trying to deploy this on the Dev server for testing.

Thanks

P R W.

Indirect Configuration Question

Jan 8, 2008

I have a series of packages in a project, all have 3-4 configuration files located on my c: drive. I need them to be in a different path on the server. I added another configuration type, but instead of specifying xml file, sql server, etc, I chose the radio button at the bottom that says 'Configuration location is stored in an environment variable'. I created a system variable on my machine, typed it into that box, then saved the configuration. I put the path to my dtsconfig files in that variable. I created the same system variable on the server, called it the same thing, and put the path to my dtsconfig files on the server in that one, but I must be missing something. The packages don't appear to find the config files on the server.

The package configuration organizer has 3 entries of type 'XML Configuration File', followed by one of type 'Indirect XML Configuration File'.
Is that the intent of this - to set a system variable that directs the packages to the appropriate directory where the config files are located? Is there something else I need to do? Does SSIS just 'know' that if there is an indirect config file to use that when looking for dtsconfig files?
Thanks

Indirect Configuration In SSIS

Jul 21, 2006

Hi,

I need to configure my package using SSIS Configurations. When I opened SSIS Configuration wizard, press ADD and selected Xml Configuration, I found two options.

One being : Specify configurations directly.

next : config location is stored in env variable.

How to use the second option?[ env variable]. Say I want to configure my connection string for my destination database [ OLEDB Destination Component]. How to do that using second option.

Thanks

Need Better Understanding Of Indirect Configuration

May 23, 2008

Hello,

I have some basic understanding of SSIS and now I am looking to take the next step. Especially since I created all my packages with EncryptWithUserKey (I didn't know better) . My assumption is that I place into each of my packages an identically named Environment Variable. Then if I move my configuration files I just need to reassign the value to that variable. Do I have that correct?

For example, I have an XML Configuration file sitting in c:PackConfigs. It is called MyConfig.dtsConfig. How do I create an Environment Variable to point to this configuration file? I assume I create the variable and assign it the value the path of the file (c:PackConfigsMyConfig.dtsConfig). I sort of get that.

But what if I have multiple XML configuration files in my package? And exactly how do I change the variable's value if I move my packages?

I've read some great posts in this forum and at Jamie Thomson's blog http://blogs.conchango.com/jamiethomson/archive/2005/11/02/SSIS_3A00_-Indirect-configurations-ROCK_2100_.aspx
but I haven't been able to get to the nitty-gritty that I think I need.

Thank you for the help.

Indirect Configuration Problem

Sep 17, 2007

I'm having a problem with indirect configurations on my client's machine.

I've created a package that uses an xml configuration file (.dtsconfig file) that is pointed to by an environment variable. I have this package running on my machine using Windows XP and on my test machine that uses Windows Server 2003. When I set it up on my client's test machine also running Windows Server 2003 the package doesn't recognize the configuration and tries to use the values that it was originally programmed with on my development machine.

I installed the packages the same on both test servers including adding the appropriate environment variables. Is it possible there is something wrong with the environment? I haven't checked the various service pack levels on the two machines. I know that I keep my test machine up to date. I'm not sure about my client. Are there any known issues like this under specific service packs? Or am I just probably missing something glaringly obvious?

Thanks,
Jeff

Moving Servers Using Indirect Configuration

Apr 16, 2008

I have a set of packages that use an Indirect Configuration to a XML config that gives each package a connection string to the Configuration database. The configuration database has all the connection strings for every connection I use.

I just moved my dbs to a new server. I updated the XML config file to point to the new server and updated the connections in the configuration table. I am having two problems. When I open packages in BIDS, I am receiving errors because the connection strings embedded in the packages were pointing to the old server. I updated the Data Sources in the solution and that didn't fix it. Why is it not using the configurations?

Also, on the production box (64bit), I am having the same problem. It is not reading in the connections from the new SQL configuration table. All my connections that are producing errors are OLEDB for SQL.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Abe

Indirect Package Configuration Using /Conf

Nov 18, 2007

Is it possible to create an indirect Package Configuration by using the /CONF switch when running a package via dtexec.
Here is what I would like to do:
1. Use an Indirect SQL Server configuration type
2. Instead of storing the connection string in an env. variable, I want to specify it at run time using the /conf switch

In other words, are there any alternatives to storing the configration connection string on the server?

Oracle Connection Manager Configuration Help

Apr 14, 2006

Hi, I dont know if I should post this question here, or on oracle forums, but here goes ...

I made a simple package that performs 2 Excecute SQL Tasks, one task does a select query on a SQL Server DB Table, the other task does a select query on an Oracle DB Table.

The package runs fine in BIDS when debugging, but when I deployed the package to a file system and added it to an sql server agent Job, it all went wrong ...

I tried the ms oledb dataprovider (ole db) for oracle but also the oracleclient data provider (ado.net) but the package always fails.

The error messages in the logfile are these:

the OnError logrow for the package itself says almost the same.

Now my question is: What do I need to configure to get it all working? I think I need to configure the oracle db no? What should I configure? ...

Creating Connection Manager From Configuration File.

Oct 26, 2007

Hello,
I am new to SSIS. Could someone please tell me how to make the Connection Manager use the connection string from the configuration file?
I am trying to have connection information set in one place for all the packages to use.
I have already created a .dtsConfig file based on my existing Connection Managers.
Do I need seperate dtsConfig files for each database?

Thank you.

Changing Connection Manager Provider In Package Configuration

Nov 6, 2007

I originally developed SSIS packages with the destination DB to be SQL Server 2005 for unit testing on my desktop. We are planning on deploying to Oracle. After changing the Provider and other attributes in the configuration file the package loads, however there are lots of issues. The primary one is that the mappings are gone. I'm not sure if that is the result of how the table names are stored "Oracle"."File" versus [SQLSERVER].[File] . Even after attempting to change the way the table names appear I still get the message "the external metadata column is out of sync with the data source columns". Then it lists all of the columns that need to be added.

Is there any way to accomplish this that you are aware of.

Thanks

HTTP Connection Manager Connectionstring, Web Tasks, And Runtime Configuration

May 12, 2008

At one point in my package I call a simple web service that kicks off a process on a remote server using a Web Service Task . I need to be able to point the task at a test instance while I'm testing and a different one when it goes to production. The simple answer (you'd hope anyway) is to just store the ConnectionString for the HTTP Connection Manger in Package Configurations for TEST and PROD. I did this and when the package runs, the connection manager's connectionstring does get changed, but the web service task doesn't use this value. It uses the value defined in the WSDL file which in my case contains the URL for the TEST instance.

Am I missing something obvious? Do I really have to get the WSDLs from PROD and TEST and deploy both of them to the appropriate environment? What does the ConnectionString in the HTTP Connection Manager actually do then?

Thanks for any insight you might have.

SQL Server Configuration Manager: Connection To Target Machine Could Not Be Made In A Timely Fashion

Dec 5, 2007

I have a SQL Server 2005 box that was moved from a domain environment to a non-domain environment and was never dropped from its original domain before moving over. Subsequently a new domain was created at the data center this SQL Server box now resides in. The machine was dropped from its old domain and joined to the new one.

All the while the service accounts were set to the local admin account. When I tried to start the Configuration Manager I got the message "Connection to target machine could not be made in a timely fashion.". I read some blog entries and tried changing all the service accounts to Local System and the error message still came up.

All of the SQL Server services run fine. It is just this management console that I cannot open. I wasn't with this employer when this box was moved to the data center so I do not know if it worked prior and there isn't anyone here that could give me its history.

Any help would be appreciated.

The Report works when Direct package configuration is used to same dtsconfig file.

What could be the reason? Any solution for this? This will cause our build/deployment to QA and Prod very difficult.

Configuration Manager - Which Configuration Type To Chose ?

Jan 14, 2006

It seems to me, that the best way is to have one Environment Varible containing the name of the SQL Server, so that you can look up the configuration in the SSIS Configuration Table when you run the package.

Is this the preferable way of doing it ? I would like to hear some positive/negative comment of why chosing a configuration type instead of another.

It seems to me that putting all of the configuration in the Environment variable is harder work but most secure (server breakdown vs table corruption/database error...)

Let's have some comments

The Connection Type OLEDB Specified For Connection Manager Is Not Recognized As A Valid Connection Manager Type - Why?

Mar 17, 2008

Greetings,

I have an SSIS package that I need to modify. It was developed in Visual Studio 2005 and runs faithfully in production on SQL Server 2005. Suddenly, I can't open the package on my own workstation. I see a big red "X" image and a message stating "Microsoft Visual Studio is unable to load this document." The real reason the document can't be loaded appears to be:

Error loading DataWarehouseLoader.dtsx: The connection type "OLEDB" specified for connection manager "Warehouse Logging OLE DB" is not recognized as a valid connection manager type. This error is returned when an attempt is made to create a connection manager for an unknown connection type. Check the spelling in the connection type name.

Does anyone know what causes this and what I can do? The package has been in production for 9 months and I've never seen this problem before.

Thanks,

The Connection Name 'name' Was Not Found In The Applications Configuration Or The Connection String Is Empty

I have been trying to host my website on Go Daddy for about 3 weeks and I have cleared several problems but this one remains. I can get into the ASPNETDB database for doing logins , etc but I cant access my database called "PINEmgt".
To try to understand where the problem is located,I built a very simple application without login controls and put on it one Detailform accessing a single line table "Signin". I continually get the error message I got with my real app :"The connection name 'PINEMgtConnectionString2' was not found in the applications configuration or the connection string is empty. " There is only one connection string in my app -'PINEMgtConnectionString2'. When I run the app locally on my machine it works. After I move everything to Go Daddy, I get the error message and the following dump"

This is indeed the code from my single page app.

The dump is:

SQL Server Configuration Manager

Apr 27, 2006

I have an application ready to transfer to the web hosting server with MS SQL 2005.
Database and tables were created with the VWD on the local machine (SQLEXPRESS).
I am using MS SQL Server Managenemt Studio Express to create the SQL to add the local tabales and data to the hosting database.
My connect to the hosting server is great.
Problem: My connection to SQLEPRESS is good but it only allows me to map Database from this directory C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData. I need to map to another directory as follows  C:Documents and SettingsdflournoyMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005WebSitescolumbushapps/app_data.  So I can get to the tables I created locally.
Also has someone put together a process to migrate from SQLEXPRESS (Local) to Remote or Production SQL 2005 or 2000.

SQL Server Configuration Manager

Jun 6, 2008

For some reason, when opening up the SQL Server Configuration Manager for one of my SQL Servers, the 'Requesting data from WMI provider..' message stays there. It never gets the data. This is in regards to services management. Its not a big deal, because I can log on to the server to accomplish this, but it would be nice to do it from SSMS. It works for other SQL Servers. Has anyone experienced this before?

Report Manager Configuration

May 2, 2007

We deployed Reporting Services recently to a customer with a latest release and build. When they type in http://<server>/ReportServer, this just comes up with a screen like a navigation sreen showing folders and links to reports. What needs to be done to get the Report Manager screen showing?

It has been a while since I actually installed Reporting Services. When they go into configuration, all of the green checks are there (except for Web Service Identity, which is Red).

Thanks for any information.

Sql Exp Configuration Manager MMC Problem

May 7, 2007

Hi,

I've had weeks trying to establish connections between my PC and Small Business Server 2003 running SqlExpress. Finally sorted out the problem, and wanted to go into Sql Exp Configuration Manager.

This I've been using for weeks, yet today I get a message that " MMC could not create the snap-in".

I thought that MMC update 3.0 may be the problem., however, cannot find any indication that my server has been updated to MMC 3.0.

If that does happen to be the cause, how do I get around it.?

Thanks for any advice
