Insert Records Into Gaps In Primary Key

Feb 23, 2006

Hi to all,
I'm a new member here and i would like to ask for some help regarding my problem. first i ahve an incremental primary key with format to something like this: 001-01-001, 001-01-002, 001-01-003, etc. My problem is that i want to insert (supply) the 'missing' or 'gaps' in my primary key field like for example: ..., 001-01-067, 001-01-068, 001-01-070. i want to insert the value 001-01-069 after the record 001-01-068. I have several gaps some ranging from several numbers like 005-04-007,005-04-020 which has a 13 records gap. Is there a way for stored procedure to solve this one? Thanks in advance.

Catch Date Gaps In Different Records

Jan 30, 2005

I need to write a procedure to check if I have any gaps in my dates...

Start Date............End Date
10/6/2004............10/6/2005
10/6/2003............10/6/2004
7/10/2003..........10/6/2003
7/10/2002.............7/10/2003

What I need to do is test the End Date to the next row under the Start Date Column. (in bold to clarify) (moving upward from bottom)

sSQL011$ = "SELECT * FROM TableName " & _
"WHERE ID = '" & ID & "'"
Set rs011 = DB.OpenRecordset(sSQL011$, dbOpenDynaset)
Set Data1.Recordset = rs011
rs011.FindFirst "ID = " & ID

With rs011
do while .eof = False

if .eof then
exit sub
end if

if rs011("StartDate") 'from one record, if it is not equal to the Start
Date in the next record then
MsgBox "Gap in Dates for: " + ID

loop

end with

pseudo...
if the end date in one consecutive row is not the same as the start date in the next row then there is a date gap

thanks...

Records Being Inserted Into Gaps Of Identity Col

Jan 17, 2008

I have a table with the following specifications:

[FutureArticleId] [bigint] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[cFutureArticleTitle] [nvarchar](50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL,
[cDescription] [ntext] COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL,
[gCategoryId] [bigint] NOT NULL,
[cKeyword] [ntext] COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,
[bIsDeleted] [bit] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbl_FutureArticle_bIsDeleted] DEFAULT ((0)),
[tOnCreated] [datetime] NOT NULL,
[tOnUpdated] [datetime] NULL,
[gCreatedBy] [bigint] NOT NULL,
[gUpdatedBy] [bigint] NULL,

After some insertions and deletion from the UI, obviously there are gaps in the FutureArticleId column which is an identity column.

However, sometimes while inserting the records the records are being inserted into the gap and not in the next available Identity value.

Is there any table setting which I need to do, to stop this.

Please let me know

Thanks
Ankit

How To Automatically Create New Records In A Foreign Table When Inserting Records In A Primary Table.

Sep 13, 2006

Ok, I'm really new at this, but I am looking for a way to automatically insert new records into tables.  I have one primary table with a primary key id that is automatically generated on insert and 3 other tables that have foreign keys pointing to the primary key.  Is there a way to automatically create new records in the foreign tables that will have the new id?  Would this be a job for a trigger, stored procedure?  I admit I haven't studied up on those yet--I am learning things as I need them. Thanks.

The above scenrio in the 2nd data flow task hangs in runtime. It does not complete. with sp_who2 command i could see that there is an intent share lock(LK_M_IS) on the table and the status is SUSPENDED.

Delete Records When You Have A Primary Key Of Two Columns

Jun 12, 2006

Hi everyone.

I have two tables: the catalog table and the detail table.
The two tables are joined by a two-columns key.

I want to make a Delete sentence for delete all the rows in the Catalog table that aren't in the detail table, in SQL Server.

The only problem is that the key is composed by two colums.

If the Key was maded of one column, that would be easy, like this:

DELETE FROM CATALOG
WHERE CATALOGKEY NOT IN (SELECT CATALOGKEY FROM DETAIL)

But it is possible to make a delete sentence if the key has two columns ?

Thanks

Querying 9.5 Millions Records With No Primary Key

Sep 4, 2007

Hello all
quick question-- Im looking for the most effiecient way to extract data daily from a table with some 9.5 mill records and growing. These are transaction records and ideally I would like to bring over the last days transactions and add them to my existing table. I cannot use the transaction date as sometime we have to operate in an "Offline" mode where the records are brought over sometime later. This could be days are unfortunetaly a week or more. there are some 30 fields in the transaction table so is there a more efficient way to do this simply creating a concatenated key?? Would it be more effiecient to drop and recreate the table daily? that sounds extreme so wanted to get a few ideas.

Thanks in Advance

Shouldn't The Order Of Records Be Based On The Key Or Primary Index?

Jun 11, 2007

I upsized an access database with a key / index on ordernumber and linenumber.

However if I open the table in the Management Studio the records aren't ordered this way (same goes for select * from table) I get:

Ordernumber
Linenumber

200724001
37

200724004
3

200724006
33

200724001
3

200724011
19

200724014
5

200724006
37

200724011
19

200724006
28

Same goes for my crystal reports files, since the records aren't ordered by ordernumber / linenumber all my formulas go bezerk..

Am I wrong thinking the records should be ordered according to the prim. index?

Please help because I don't want to have to change all my 40+ reports to include an "ORDER BY"

Best regards,

Mike

Inserted Records Missing In Sql Table Yet Tables' Primary Key Field Has Been Incremented.

Jun 18, 2007

I have a sql sever 2005 express table with an automatically incremented primary key field. I use a Detailsview to insert new records and on the Detailsview itemInserted event, i send out automated notification emails.
I then received two automated emails(indicating two records have been inserted) but looking at the database, the records are not there. Whats confusing me is that even the tables primary key field had been incremented by two, an indication that indeed the two records should actually be in table.  Recovering these records is not abig deal because i can re-enter them but iam wondering what the possible cause is. How come the id field was even incremented and the records are not there yet iam 100% sure no one deleted them. Its only me who can delete a record.
And then how come i insert new records now and they are all there in the database but now with two id numbers for those missing records skipped. Its not crucial data but for my learning, i feel i deserve understanding why it happened because next time, it might be costly.

Package Insert Primary Key

Hi,

I am new to SSIS and still trying to design my first package.
My package doesn't seem to want to complete when I have set an indentity field with an identity seed in my table as a primary key.

If the field is not a primary key, the package runs fine.

Any ideas how to insert records when there is a primary key in the table?

In another instance, I am actually trying to fill the primary key with a value from flat file and that also does not work.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

select * from [server1].TEST.dbo.results

results table are identical with primary keys.

Problem is when run this code it gives an error

Msg 8101, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

An explicit value for the identity column in table 'dbo.results' can only be specified when a column list is used and IDENTITY_INSERT is ON.

I need a help to set it so when it tries to copy the existing row (same primary key), it ignores it and moves on to the next row..

INSERT Data Into Table That Maybe Have That Primary Key Already

May 12, 2007

Hi, I'm not user to inserting data into databases, usually I just read the data.  So I think my problem might be pretty common.I have a table of longitudes, latitudes, city names, and country names.  I set the primary key to be the columns longitude and latitude.   I have a method that generates the user's location and the mentioned data.  So I want to only insert the new data into the database if it is new and unique.  currently if the same user goes to my site, it inserts the data fine the first time and then throws and error the second time because it is inserting duplicate primary key information.  Do I need to query the database to see if the data record already exists?  or is there a way to insert the record only if it is "new"?? Thanks for the help!!

Problems With Insert Query And Primary Key

Nov 27, 2007

I am trying to run an insert query off of a sql datasource and I am erroring out.  My code and stored procedure as of now are listed below.  You will notice the section of the stored procedure that is pulling the value for facility_ID (primary key).  I have also tried to pull these and pass the parameter from a label, but that does not work, giving an error that the stored procedure expects the parameter @Facility_ID which was not supplied.  One other odd thing is that stepping through the code, I watched the parameter count total 21, but when running the insert command, the insert parameter count shows 20.  With the code below (my current project), I get an error that null values can not be entered for facility_ID.  Please help. CODE:         Dim myConnection As New Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("FacilitiesBuild").ConnectionString)        'open myconnection        myConnection.Open()        Dim myCommand As New How To Insert Primary Keys Without Using Identity

Nov 17, 2003

I have the following issue
- my database consists of tables with one ID field as primary key.
for each INSERT the 'next' value from this ID field is extracted
from a table called TableList.
- this works perfectly fine, as long as I insert one record at a time:
but now I would like to run a command such as
INSERT INTO dest (name)
SELECT name
FROM src
i.e. without being able to specify the ID value.
Has anybody implemented this
(i would prefer not to use identity columns or use cursors),
possible with triggers?

thanks for your time,

Andre

Trigger : Insert Maximum Primary ID

Mar 15, 2005

Hi,

via VBScript, I am inserting data into one table as below:
Code:

conn.Source = "INSERT INTO img (imageDesc,imageName,imageDate,imageUser,imageIP) VALUES ('"& ni &"','"& fn &"','"& Now() &"',"& Session("MM_UserID") &",'"& Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_HOST") &"')"

In another table, I want to insert the primary key (imageID) of this newly inserted row into a new table called "t_image_Site" along with another value in another column.

Any advice/tutorials... this can be done with a trigger if I'm not mistaken?

JJ
