Insert Values In Primary Key Field
May 15, 2006
Hi,
Does anyone know how should I create a table in order that I can insert values(numbers) in the primary key field, using insert statements. I also would like to know if there are any differences between SQL 2k and SQL 2k5.
Thanks in advance for any reply.

i can't believe my situation is unique, but my searches for answers have proven fruitless, so please bear with me.i have a date field in my database, and have previously used a simple textbox to allow users to insert a date. i want to make this a little step a little nicer, however, and have added a dropdown for the month, a textbox for the date (i'm not "good" enough to dynamically change this around for a dropdown list), and a dropdown list for the next few years.what "insert" statement would allow me to accomplish this? what i currently have doesn't blow up, but neither does it actually insert anything. here's my statment:<asp:SqlDataSource ID="sdsVersion" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:DB %>" InsertCommand="INSERT INTO [Version] ([Major], [Minor], [Sub], [Rev], [Date]) VALUES (@Major, @Minor, @Sub, @Rev, @Month + '-' + @Day + '-' + @Year)"> <InsertParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="Major" Type="Int32" /> <asp:Parameter Name="Minor" Type="Int32" /> <asp:Parameter Name="Sub" Type="Int32" /> <asp:Parameter Name="Rev" Type="Int32" /> <asp:ControlParameter ControlID="ddlMonths" Name="Month" PropertyName="SelectedValue" Type="Int32" /> <asp:ControlParameter ControlID="tbDate" Name="Day" PropertyName="Text" Type="Int32" /> <asp:ControlParameter ControlID="ddlYears" Name="Year" PropertyName="SelectedValue" Type="Int32" /> </InsertParameters></asp:SqlDataSource>

I have a function that updates a table in sql server
If a field is left blank I want the database field set to Null. I use:sqlCmd.Parameter.Add("@somefield, someintvalue) to pass all my values to the database.
if someintvalue is null I want to set @somefield to dbnull
How can I do this? I get errors if I submit a null integer when there is a foreign key constraint. What is the best way to handle this? should I just make all parameters objects? so that I can set them to DBNull.Value?
Also on a side note, when you are populating fields from a datatable, is there a better way to set the values (i.e. of a textbox) than cheking for DBNull before assigning?

I am currently working on an application that requires, insertion of the results of a SQL Query in to the field of another table, in the form of a comma separated values.
For example, to explain things in detail:
create table dbo.phone_details
(country varchar(20),
state varchar(30),
list_of_toll_free_numbers text)
insert into dbo,phone_details
values
( 'USA', 'CA', 'select Phone from phone_table where substring(phone, 1, 3) in ('800', '866', '877', '888')' )
The final output I desire is:
country state list_of_toll_free_numbers
---------- ------- -----------------------------------------
USA CA 8009877654, 8665764398, 8776543219

Here's a portion of the current statement.
UPDATE EngagementAuditAreas
SET numDeterminationLevelTypeId = parent.numDeterminationLevelTypeId,
numInherentRiskID = parent.numInherentRiskID,
numControlRiskID = parent.numControlRiskID,
numCombinedRiskID = parent.numCombinedRiskID,
numApproachTypeId = parent.numApproachTypeId,
bInherentRiskIsAffirmed = 0,
bControlRiskIsAffirmed = 0,
bCombinedRiskIsAffirmed = 0,
bApproachTypeIsAffirmed = 0,
bCommentsIsAffirmed = 0
FROM EngagementAuditAreas WITH(NOLOCK) ...
And what I need is to conditionalize the values of the "IsAffirmed" fields by looking at their corresponding "num" fields. Something like this (which doesn't work).
UPDATE EngagementAuditAreas
SET numDeterminationLevelTypeId = parent.numDeterminationLevelTypeId,
numInherentRiskID = parent.numInherentRiskID,
numControlRiskID = parent.numControlRiskID,
numCombinedRiskID = parent.numCombinedRiskID,
numApproachTypeId = parent.numApproachTypeId,
bInherentRiskIsAffirmed = (numInherentRiskID IS NULL),
bControlRiskIsAffirmed = (numControlRiskID IS NULL),
bCombinedRiskIsAffirmed = (numCombinedRiskID IS NULL),
bApproachTypeIsAffirmed = (numApproachTypeID IS NULL),
bCommentsIsAffirmed = (parent.txtComments IS NULL)
FROM EngagementAuditAreas WITH(NOLOCK)
Thanks.

I am trying to audit data quality based on some defined data quality rules. The rules are stored in tables and processed using stored procedures. I am facing a problem while generating audits. Let's say I am trying to audit data in OrderDetail table. The table design is mentioned below...I inserted some sample data into the table using RedGate data generator.The audit table output I am expecting is as mentioned in the screenshot below
Its the PrimaryKeyAttributeValues column I am facing problems with. I am using STUFF function within a dynamic SQL query to get the primary key's as a list of comma separated values.

table2 is intially populated (basically this will serve as historical table for view); temptable and table2 will are similar except that table2 has two extra columns which are insertdt and updatedt
process:
1. get data from an existing view and insert in temptable
2. truncate/delete contents of table1
3. insert data in table1 by comparing temptable vs table2 (values that exists in temptable but not in table2 will be inserted)
4. insert data in table2 which are not yet present (comparing ID in t2 and temptable)
5. UPDATE table2 whose field/column VALUE is not equal with temptable. (meaning UNMATCHED VALUE)
* for #5 if a value from table2 (historical table) has changed compared to temptable (new result of view) this must be updated as well as the updateddt field value.

Hello,
I have an app that is connected to SQL 2005 express edition.
In the DB there is a table that has an auto incremental primary key
What I want is, I want to get a new value for that auto incremental field before sending the new record's date to the DB to be stored. So I can display the new record's ID in my app's interface
So is there something in SQL server like SEQUENCE in oracle.
Thanks in advance.

I need to insert a row of data and return the value of the primary key id of the row.
I thought that something like this would work
int Key = (int)command.ExecuteScalar();
where command is SqlCommand object.
It doesn't work, maybe I've misunderstood the usage of ExecuteScalar.

I was just wondering on a very simple database table with lets say a primary key set to columb ID and another columb lets say products, can you make the primary key automaticly increment its self whenever a new entry has been put in?For instance say I have this table set up with ID Being the primary KEY, Columb 1 = ID( INT ), Columb 2 = Products ( VarChar(50) ), and have the fields ID = 1, and products = my product.....and if a user inserts a new record say from a gridview or some sort of data entry the second ID Feild will automaticly be 2 and the products gets updated per user input.......I'm very sorry but I'm having a hard time putting this into words for some reason..umm basicly user adds something into the products feild and the ID field automaticly increments one number higher from the last one?ThanksAdam.

I'm really puzzled with this. I am new to using MS SQL and need help with the primary key. When I was using Access, I would open the database table and just enter values for the various columns, each time a new column was begun, the computer would insert a unique number there. OK, so now I am using visual studio to work on a SQL database. I created a new table and the first field I specified was "ID", I then chose it as the primary key. For default value, I tried both auto number and auto increment. These don't seem to work, as when I type values into fields and try to move to the next row, having left the ID field blank, I get an error which reads "String or Binary data may be truncated". What is going on, what do I need to do so the field automatically populates with an ID number... Some research sort of led me to the concept of a "trigger" to do this. Is this the approach. I was able to r-click on the table and I saw an option for "create trigger" or "new trigger"... How do I learn to do this, is there a generic trigger to do an auto increment of a primary key ID field?

Hi everybody couldn't get through with saving my data on the table with two primary keys...
my table structure is this
pubidintUnchecked (primary key)
pubchar(1)Unchecked
publchar(1)Unchecked
pubcodechar(2)Unchecked (primary key)
a sample data is here
pubid pub publ pubcode
1 a b ab
1 b b bb
2 a b ab
2 b b bb
when i save this table modifying the pubid and pubcode as primary keys the following error displays...
Unable to create index 'PK_PUBS3'.
CREATE UNIQUE INDEX terminated because a duplicate key was found for index ID 1. Most significant primary key is '51'.
Could not create constraint. See previous errors.
The statement has been terminated.
what i understand is that on the primary key duplicates are not allowed how could i allow it?
thanks

Hello group:I've done alot of reading on this subject somewhat and have found thatmany people have many different opinions on this subject. My questioncenters mainly around using a lookup table to enable users to select apre-defined list of values.I have developed a practice myself of avoiding AutoNumber type datafields for primary keys where the primary key will be related to achild table. Nevertheless, what do most users do with lookup tables?My thoughts are to create a small key value for each value in thelookup table. For example:I might have a Carriers table which shows a list of carriers that Imight ship an order by. One of the entries may be 'Air Freight -Overnight', or 'Air Freight - 2nd Day Air'. I've seen a few exampleswhere the primary key field for each entry like these would beautonumber, or at least, a numeric value. What I like to do is createmy own key, like for 'Air Freight - Overnight', I might use 'AFO' forthe key, and for 'Air Freight - 2nd Day Air', I might use 'AF2'. Anythoughts on this? Mine are that even tho the users may never see thisvalue - I, as the developer will see it and I tend to prefer a keyvalue based on real data that means something other than anauto-incremented number. In referencing the well-known Northwind.mdbdatabase, I noticed their Categories table used a number field value,like 1, 2, 3....etc, but their customers table used values like'ALFKI' to represent their key values.What are some other thoughts out there? I'm working with Accesscurrently, but this project is about to move to SQL Server.James

I have a web form with a text field that needs to take in as much as the user decides to type and insert it into an nvarchar(max) field in the database behind. I've tried using the new .write() method in my update statement, but it cuts off the text after a while. Is there a way to insert/update in SQL 2005 this without resorting to Bulk Insert? It bloats the transaction log and turning the logging off requires a call to sp_dboptions (or a straight-up ALTER DATABASE), which I'd like to avoid if I can.

Hello I currently have a merge replication set up with 4 subscribers. A primary field for one of my tables is set to a integer indetity.
What Ive noticed is that depending on which database I enter data into, the indentity field (primary key) is set within a certain range I.e
On Server 1 - Values start from 1 then 2,3,4 etc etc
Server 2 - 24001, 24002, 24003 etc etc
Server 3 - 46001, 46002, 46003 etc etc
Server 4 - 68001, 68002, 68003
My question is what happens when these ranges eventually conflict? Do they automatically gain a different range such as 142 001, 142 002 etc etc?
Ive tried looking in SQL Help, and a quick search here, Im just after some confirmation before I implement this to my app.
cheers

I would like to get the primary key values in a DML CREATE TRIGGER as follows:
CustomerID = 12 AND InvoiceID = 50
I create the DML trigger for UPDATE and DELETE only, how do I retrieve the values as above ?
Jon Galloway provided a sample in http://weblogs.asp.net/jgalloway/archive/2008/01.aspx but the Primary Key Field and Primary Key Value were inserted into separate columns while I need to combine the Primary Key Field and Primary Key Value into 1 single field, using his example, I want to form the primary key as:
ScoreId = 423
ScoreId = 3064
etc.
Note that his example only show a single primary key in a table whereas I need to handle multiple primary keys in a table.

We are facing the following issue, several machines/users that are executing very often a command similar to :
INSERT INTO TableName (FieldOne,FieldTwo) VALUES ('ValueOne','ValueTwo');
SELECT SCOPE_IDENTITY() AS Table_ID;
Where TableName has a primary key defined as identity(1,1).and that Table_ID is being used as reference in others tables
These queries are executed using different dababase users and among several diffrent apps..The Problem is that we are detecting lost block of "Table_ID's" as the other tables shows the InsertedID as a reference, but the TableName table lacks of this ID record. In other words, the INSERT seems to work, the SCOPE_Identity returns an InsertedID, and the other tables are populated using this number. However, when we query the TableName table the mentioned record does not exist. We are profiling the server and we're sure that there are no DELETE statement on the TableName table. This seems to be happening when the are either deadlocks or blocked processes. Whenever the deadlocks and locks disappear/solved, everything works as expected.why the Scope_Identity returns the Inserted ID if the INSERT action had failed.

I have two practice tables I have created and want to export the values of one into the source table. I want to know if I can export into a table and have the destination table automatically give a primary key value to a record? I haven't been able to figure this out even after fiddling with the "Enable identity insert" checkbox under the Column Mappings tab. I have created source tables with and without primary keys and neither works because of the fact that I need to have a value for a primary key in order to INSERT into the destination.
Do I have to copy the source records into a staging table and assign the PK values myself by hand? This can't be the answer.
