Error Inserting Row In Table Where There Is Multiple Foreign Key.

Oct 26, 2007

Hi guys,
I have created 3 tables namely Static, Dynamic and Demo...
Static has colums FormID(uniqueidentifier, PrimaryKey) and FormName(Nvarchar(50)).
Dynamic has colums formID(uniqueidentifier,PrimaryKey) and FormName(Nvarchar(50)).
Demo has 4 colums namely ValueID(uniqueidentifier, Primary Key), formID(uniqueidentifier, foreign key), Name(nvarchar(50)), Value(nvarchar(50).

Now the formID coloum in Demo table i have set as foreign key to both the dynamic table as well as static table on the formID colum in both table.

Now first i insert a row in the dynamic table then take the uniqueidentifier which is generated automatically and try
to insert in the Demo table in formID colum as that colum is FK to dynamic and static but when i try to insert a row it show that its violating the FOREIGN KEY CONSTRAINT

the exact error is

Msg 547, Level 16, State 0, Line 1

The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "FK_Demo_Dynamic1". The conflict occurred in database "huzefaJTest", table "dbo.Dynamic", column 'formid'.

The statement has been terminated.

please if anyone know do reply.....

Inserting Foreign Key Value Using Subquery

May 11, 2008

Hi,

I'm playing around with a training-wheel database. I have a table that stores magazine subscription info. I have a lookup table that stores the delivery period, ie. 'weekly', 'monthly', etc. I have a primary key ID field in tblPeriods and a foreign key field in the main table, tblMags. I want to insert data into tblMags without having to memorize the correlation between the period key and the period itself. Here's what I tried first:

INSERT INTO tblMags
( vcName,
fkPeriodID )
VALUES
( 'The New Yorker',
(SELECT tblPeriods_ID FROM tblPeriods
WHERE vcPeriod = 'Weekly'));

This gives the following message:

Server: Msg 1046, Level 15, State 1, Line 6
Subqueries are not allowed in this context. Only scalar expressions are allowed.

I'm thinking there must be a way to insert data like this and take advantage of a foreign key relationship without looking up a value each time. Any ideas?

Mike

Problem Inserting Foreign Languages Into Ms Sql Using Java

Aug 24, 2004

hi there, i'm having a real problem here.

I have some foreign language encoded characters in the database. They are those characters that makes no sense when using the wrong charset to view them. Now I need to retrieve them from the database and re-insert as unicode so that they can be viewed properly.

Now the problem is this: when I retrieve them from the database using java, some characters tend to contain single quote (') or brackets in there, thus screwing up my whole update statement. Below is the coding I am using. It works when there isn't any single quotes or brackets.

Connection con = db.getConnection();
Statement stmt = con.createStatement();
ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("select b.en_transID, b.trans_content from translations a, en_translations b where a.en_transID=b.en_transID and a.language_ID='3'");

while (rs.next())
{
String original = rs.getString("En_transID");
byte bytes[] = rs.getBytes("trans_content");
if (bytes != null)
{
String s = new String(bytes, "UTF-16LE");
s = new String(s.getBytes(), "big5");

Statement tempStmt = con.createStatement();
tempStmt.executeUpdate("update En_Translations set trans_content = (N'"+s+"') where En_transID = '"+original+"'");
tempStmt.close();
}

Is there any way to get around this? Please help! Will appreciate it very much!

How To Automatically Create New Records In A Foreign Table When Inserting Records In A Primary Table.

Sep 13, 2006

Ok, I'm really new at this, but I am looking for a way to automatically insert new records into tables.  I have one primary table with a primary key id that is automatically generated on insert and 3 other tables that have foreign keys pointing to the primary key.  Is there a way to automatically create new records in the foreign tables that will have the new id?  Would this be a job for a trigger, stored procedure?  I admit I haven't studied up on those yet--I am learning things as I need them. Thanks.

Sql 2005 Foreign Key Error

Jul 4, 2006

Lets say that I have a 3 tables: 1) Sku, 2) ReceiptDetail and 3) OrderDetail. In the last 2, is a Sku column which needs to refer to the Sku table. I create ForeignKeys in the ReceiptDetail & OrderDetail pointing to the Sku table as follows:
Alter Table ReceiptDetail Add Constraint fk_ReceiptDetail_SkuKey Foreign Key (SkuKey) References Sku (SkuKey) On Update Cascade On Delete No Action;
The first 'Alter' (for ReceiptDetail) works, but the second gives me the following message:
Introducing FOREIGN KEY constraint 'fk_OrderDetail_SkuKey' on table 'OrderDetail' may cause cycles or multiple cascade paths. Specify ON DELETE NO ACTION or ON UPDATE NO ACTION, or modify other FOREIGN KEY constraints.
This worked in Sql Server 2000, but not 2005. I just wanted the Sku updated in the all other tables when updated in the main Sku table. I guess that I could use a trigger, but shouldn't need to.

PDate date,
Constraint fkey_p1 foreign key (Job) references JOBDETAIL(Job));

Error Whilst Adding Foreign Key

Jan 4, 2008

I've been getting what I think is a bizarre error message whilst trying to create a foreign key between two tables.

tblDailyComments has a primary key of DiaryID
tblDailyOperatingData has a column DiaryID.

Both are Int (4).

Yet when I run the following:

ALTER TABLE tblDailycomments
ADD CONSTRAINT FK_tbldailycomments_tblDailyOpData
FOREIGN KEY REFERENCES
tblDailyOperatingData(DiaryID)

I'm getting the error message:

Server: Msg 8139, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Number of referencing columns in foreign key differs from number of referenced columns, table 'tblDailycomments'.

I also tried to create the relationship in a database diagram and this brought back errors as well.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cyclical Reference Error With Foreign Keys

Oct 26, 2007

The following SQL statements give me an error on the last line:

CREATE TABLE Employees (id int PRIMARY KEY NOT NULL, name nvarchar(50));
CREATE TABLE RandomTable (uniq int PRIMARY KEY NOT NULL, empid1 int NOT NULL, empid2 int NOT NULL);
ALTER TABLE RandomTable ADD CONSTRAINT RandomTable_FKey_1 FOREIGN KEY (empid1) REFERENCES Employees (id) ON DELETE CASCADE;
ALTER TABLE RandomTable ADD CONSTRAINT RandomTable_FKey_2 FOREIGN KEY (empid2) REFERENCES Employees (id) ON DELETE CASCADE;

The error is:

"The referential relationship will result in a cyclical reference that is not allowed."

Um...how is this cyclical? Is it because I have multiple cascade paths? If so, how do I go about doing the same thing?

Thanks,
Jeff

Updating Data In Foreign Key Relationships

Aug 1, 2006

Hey guys this is a SQL Server 2005, .net 2.0 question. I got 3 tables: Job, Times, Employee. The times table is related to Job and Employee by foreign keys. The Times table is pretty much a table where the employee's time logs are kept for a specific job. Since there was a M:M relationship between Job - Employee, I decided to create a Times table in between, and the primary key of this table should actually be the PK of Job and the PK Employee, but I couldn't figure out how to make a PK consisting of two fields.
Anyhow, my main question is: How to assign an Employee to a specific job in .net? In other words, what's the best way of retrieving the Job_id and Emp_id and sticking them in the Times table? I was doing a form with a drop down for Emp_id and Job_id, but I don't know how to do the inserts... I'm confused and would appreciate any help.THANKS!

Data Import - Foreign Key Question

Jul 23, 2005

This is a rather abstract question about data design, but I ask it herebecause a) the database is SQL Server, and b) you're such a learnedbunch!Let's assume the classic relation of Customers and Orders, where anOrder may reference a single Customer. If I was designing such arelation from scratch, I would create the Customer table with anIdentity column and call it CustomerID. The Order table would containa column called CustomerID, a foreign key to the Customer table.So far, so unexceptional. However, in my current project I have towork with legacy data that comes from a number of old Access systemswhere the data was not normalised. I wish to normalise it.The main table in this new system contains reports on parts. Eachreport may reference a single part. However, the old data which I haveto import allowed the user to type in the part number. This has led todirty data (for example, '40-7889-9098' appears, as does '40-7889-9098') so I will clean this data up. In the application, the partnumber will be selected from a drop down list, though the administratorwill have access to a builder to add, amend or delete part numbers.So, my report table needs to store a reference to a part. When Iimport the data into my SQL Report table, I will initially bring acrossthe part number. I will then populate the Part Numbers table with alldiscrete, distinct part numbers from the Report table. My question isshould I then create a PartNumberID column in both tables, and "backpopulate" the Report table with the PartNumberID which corresponds withthe matching PartNumber - e.g.UPDATERSETR.fldPartNumberID = PN.fldPartNumberIDFROMtblReports RINNER JOIN tblPartNumbers RNON R.fldPartNumber = RN.fldPartNumberI could then drop the fldPartNumber from the tblReports table.My question is - should I bother? Or can I just leave the actualPartNumber in the Reports table, and leave the tblPartNumbers tablewith a single column which is both Primary key and Foreign key?Sorry if this is poorly expressed - I had a tough weekend!Edward--The reading group's reading group:http://www.bookgroup.org.uk

How To Retrieve Data From A Second Table With No Foreign Key

Oct 5, 2007

I have 4 tables I am pulling data from. Table A and B can be joined and Table C and D can be joined via foreign keys but A and/or B can not be Joined to C and/or D via foreign Key.

My statement basically looks like this to start

SELECT s.HTENANT, s.HPROP, s.HUNIT, s.SHEADNAME3B, s.DTOT7I
FROM H8summ S join tenant t on s.htenant = t.hmyperson

And returns this :

29226 128 20577 Almukhtar, Khadijah M 4242.00
26574 128 17980 Archie, Mary 20218.00

The last number is the key it is the income.

In another table we have an income limit table setup that would have the low, medium and high settings for the range.

For instance it may have 11400 as the elimit attribute and say 22000 as the vlimit attribute.

Then in the fourth table we the description that can be linked back to the income limit table via the hinclimit attribute. In this case the desc attribute would be ELI for elimit and VLI for vlimit.

So I want to take the income compare it to the income limit table and then return the description

The output would look like this :
29226 128 20577 Almukhtar, Khadijah M 4242.00 eli
26574 128 17980 Archie, Mary 20218.00 vli

I just not sure how to reference the income limit table without the foreign key in the from statement. When I just add it it returns 6 rows for each person (number of rows on the income limit table)

SQL 2012 :: Create Table With Both Keys As Foreign (error)

Dec 15, 2014

I'm trying to create a table in Microsoft Server Management Studio 2012. The table has two fields which are both foreign keys.

I created the following:

create table tblRoomEquipment(
RoomID nvarchar(8),
EquipmentType nvarchar(1),
foreign key (RoomID) references tblRoom(ID),
foreign key (EquipmentType) references tblEquipment(Type)
)

Both tblRoom and tblEquipment have the red line error which when I highlight say the they both reference an invalid table!

Both tables are there and have primary keys defined as ID & Type. I have searched around and all I could find was that there maybe a permission problem.

Foreign Language/function Sequence Error Problem

Jul 13, 2007

Am using sql 2000 to store data in the greek language. Using delphi built program to enter the data. The delphi program communicates with sql server via the ODBC connection I created. When I type in above 150 characters in a varchar column that can hold 600, the message (odbc manager - function sequence error) appears and does not allow me to save. However if I type in the english language, it saves without a problem. Here's the strange one-- if I type very very slowly in the greeek language it will save! Am using Windows XP english version.

Any ideas? I have spent above a month on this one!!

How Do I Move Data And Preserve Foreign Key Relationships

Feb 21, 2005

How do I move data from one server and append to the same table structure on a second server and preserve the foreign key relationships. In other words TableB.TableA_ID references TableA.ID. The IDENTITY ID numbers themselves will change but they must continue to match up on the destination server the way they did on the source server.

I can do this using procedural programming but that is usually not the way to go.

How To Import CSV Data Into Table With Foreign Key Conversion

Nov 17, 2013

Our SQL 2008 R2 relational database has tables with foreign key relationships for part numbers. We receive production data from a separate program and we need to import the CSV data into our database application.

The problem is our separate program creates a CSV file with the actual part number "362S162-33". In our database we have a separate parts table (example: 362S162-33 has identity "15").

We need to import data into a production table that has a "part number" (FK) column.

How can we, when importing, cross-reference the "parts table" to convert the part number to the identity number. We have thousands of parts, so we need this change of part number column to the FK identity automatically on import.

Production Table:
idComponent (PK), [1000]
ComponentName, [Assembly108]
idPartNumber (FK), [15]
ComponentLength, [230.5]
UserMessage, [Assembly is 230.5 inches using 362S162-33]
Qty; [1]

I've imported data from an Excel spreadsheet to a table that has fields to match the destination table I'm trying to populate. The destination table has an Insert trigger with several checks on certain fields to make sure they have corresponding records in other tables.

If I do a statement like
"INSERT INTO destinationTable
(
ItemId,
Product,
SuperID,
etc etc
)
SELECT * FROM oldtable"
it runs for a while then gives me error messages from the trigger and rolls back the Insert.

The trigger has code such as
"IF (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM inserted WHERE ((inserted.Product Is Not Null))) != (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tblInProduct, inserted WHERE (tblInProduct.Product = inserted.Product))
BEGIN
(Error message code goes here)
END"

So, do I need to do an INNER JOIN to each of the related files?
When I try that, I get this error:
"Msg 121, Level 15, State 1, Line 2
The select list for the INSERT statement contains more items than the insert list. The number of SELECT values must match the number of INSERT columns."
Is SQL counting the foreign key fields as separate fields, or what?

Adding New Data Fiels And Inserting Data

Sep 17, 2004

I have some website work lined up and it involves some simple modifications to a MS SQL 2000 server. What I'll need to do is add some new data fields and insert some data.

I have some experience with databases - MS Access and MySQL, but I have never used or seen MS SQL 2000. My question is, is this a relatively simple thing to do for someone who hasn't used it before? I can do these things quite simply in Access or MySQL, so is MS SQL 2000 going to be any different?

Also, does anyone know of any free tutorials online that would help me out?

Thanks
