How To Fetch Data Before Inserting A New ROW If We Are Using Identity Column??????

Apr 21, 2008

Hi,

I am using SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition & Merge Replication

in this I want to insert a record into table,
in that table I have taken UserID coloumn as auto incrementing Identity type.

In a book I read that,
If you are using an Identity column, you must find the next available number and reseed before an insert can be successful. You will also have to set up ranged identity columns on the published database to prevent errors when the new data is merged.

Now I want to ask here that, how should I ressed that value before inserting?????

any help in a form of CODe will be appriciated.....

thanks in advance...

Question On Inserting A Record On Sql Server With Identity Column As Key

Jan 16, 2006

Hi, All:Please help. I use sql server as back end and Access 2003 as front end(everything is DAO).A table on SQL server has an identity column as the key.We have trouble on adding records to this table using the following SQL.strSQL = "INSERT INTO myTableOnSQLServer (A, B, C, D, E) SELECT A, B, C, D,E FROM myTableonAccessLocal"db.execute strSQLThe schema of the table "myTableOnSQLServer" and the schema of the table"myTableonAccessLocal" are all the same except that the "myTableOnSQLServer"has an identity column (ID). The key of the "myTableOnSQLServer" is "ID" andthe table "myTableonAccessLocal" does not have a key.When we try to run the query, it gives errors indicating the key is violatedor missing.Should I figure out the autonumber for it first and then add to the SQLserver table?Many thanks,HS

Transact SQL :: Instead Of Insert / Verify Not Inserting Into Identity Column

I am writing an Instead of Insert trigger. I would like to fire an error when inserting into an 'Identity' column. Since UPDATE([ColumnName]) always returns TRUE for insert statements, is there an easy/fast way around this? I don't want to use:

here is my pseudo-code...

RAISERROR('INSERT into the anchor identity column ''AS_ID'' is not allowed.', 16, 1) WITH NOWAIT;

-- Do Stuff

-- Should error for inserting into [AS_ID] field (which is an identity field)
INSERT INTO [org].[Assets]([AS_ID], [Tag], [Name])

Inserting With DTS In IDENTITY Table

Oct 12, 2006

Hi

I need to insert values from a text-file to a table with a primary key as identity. In the text file I have no idea of the primary key values and i get "foreign key constraint violation" when trying to import null values into the column.

How can I solve the problem? With ordinary insert-statement there is no problem since the table generates identity- key values automatically. Is there a possibility to generate identity values with DTS-import?

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Inserting Into A Self-referencing Table Using Identity Int

Jul 14, 2014

We are in the conversion process of making the database ints.This is a change from a guid PK to an integer based PK that uses an int Identity. The program still uses the guid, and we are trying to map that guid to the databases int.We insert using TVPs passed from code. Since the identity is being set upon insert I have three things to accomplish:

1) Insert all the data into the dbo table
2) Update the parent Id in the table
3) Pass the SetsId guid, Sets_Id int, ParentSets_Id int back to the program

This is a high transaction table that will have a lot of records (millions).

SSIS - Failure Inserting Into The Read-only Column ColumnName

May 10, 2007

Hi folks, I have a little challenge for you, I hope :)

The short story is as follows: I have multiple rather well normalized tables, and a view which connect them all togheter. In one of the tables I have an xml column, which I in the view to varchar(4000), since SSIS doesn't like xml all that much. To make the view updateable I have an instead of trigger placed on it, which works quite perfectly from T-SQL. SSIS however, claims that I cannot insert to a read-only column. Does anyone have the slightest idea how I can get around this?

The only solution I can think of is having two columns for the XML data, one as varchar and the other as varchar, then having a trigger updating the xml column when the varchar is updated, but that would require recursive triggers, which I am not too happy with.

Cheers

TSQL - Using ALTER TABLE - ALTER COLUMN To Modify Column Type / Set Identity Column

Hi guys,
If I have a temporary table called #CTE
With the columns
[Account]

[RowID Table Level]
[RowID Data Level]
and I need to change the column type for the columns:
[RowID Table Level]
[RowID Data Level]
to integer, and set the column [RowID Table Level] as Identity (index) starting from 1, incrementing 1 each time.
What will be the right syntax using SQL SERVER 2000?

I am trying to solve the question in the link below:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2093921&SiteID=1

Thanks in advance,
Aldo.

I have tried the code below, but getting syntax error...

ALTER TABLE #CTE
ALTER COLUMN
[RowID Table Level] INT IDENTITY(1,1),
[RowID Data Level] INT;

I have also tried:

ALTER TABLE #CTE
MODIFY
[RowID Table Level] INT IDENTITY(1,1),
[RowID Data Level] INT;

I have a 2010 SSIS package where I am reading csv files with different fields and formatted data, I have created separate packages for each file and I am formatting the data to fit the final destination tables data elements, I've been instructed to create 7 separate packages to read each file and the format the data from the 7 csv files, and insert into their table tbl1, tbl2, tbl3...etc then, I'm taking a execute sql task and wanting to insert the tbl1, tbl2, tbl3...etc into destination table that will be the final table for all reports and other uses.

1- should I create a ID?
2- these files will be read once a month
3- I want to append the data, not drop and recreate each run,
4- It's 2012 SQL and 2010 SSIS

Each csv file is in a different format, some have 15 columns, other have 8 I have to parse the data, in SP to align with the fields in the destination table.

5- Can I force RowID to be the next auto gen number from tbl1,for the start of insert for tbl2, then last row of tbl2 for insert of tbl3???

Hi,

insert into temptable select name, email, date from usertable where condition = xyz.
I tried auto increment column with seed 1, increment 1. But if I delete and insert again it does not start from 1. Is there any way to accompolish this? It will make the front-end code very simple.

I am getting an error though.

Is there any way to work around this?

INSERT Into Table With IDENTITY Column

Jul 31, 2001

I'm sure this is a common problem but I can't find any relevant info on this site

I have a table that I would like to insert values into. I want to take the values from a secondary table using a select statement.

e.g. a simplified version...

TABLE1
(
Id INTEGER IDENTITY,
UserName VARCHAR(50),
Description VARCHAR(50)
)

TABLE 2
(
UserName VARCHAR(50),
Description VARCHAR(50)
)

Runing the insert statement

INSERT Table1 (UserName, Description)
SELECT *
FROM TABLE2

results in the error
erver: Msg 515, Level 16, State 2, Line 2
Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'Id', table 'CDS_Live.dbo.Table1'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.
The statement has been terminated.

I was under the impression that an identity column would be automatically inserted by SQL server. Now I know I could write a piece of anonymous Transact SQL which declares a cursor by selecting all rows from table 2 and inserting rows into table 1 on a row by row basis, but is there any way I could do the Insert with a single INSERT statement?

thanks

SSIS: Inserting Unknown Members From Fact Table

Aug 18, 2005

Looking up surrogate keys in a dimension table and adding these to your data flow is easy when there is a match in your dimension table for every key in your fact table. However, I am puzzled by how to manage the data flow when no match can be found for a specific key in the fact table when doing the lookup AND I then want to insert this unknown key as an unknown/inferred member in the dimension table. The problem is further complicated by the fact that when I have inserted the unknown member in the dimension table and it has been assigned a surrogate key there, I want to add this surrogate key to my fact table - just as if there had been a match in the lookup in the first place.

Restarting The Identity Column On Table Variable

Jun 2, 2006

In a cursor, I declare a table variable like so:
DECLARE @TempTable TABLE(RowID INT IDENTITY, valueID int)
I then insert into that table from another table.  The purpose is to get a list that looks like this after the insert:
RowID     valueID1               348972               345223               94822
etc....
However, the next time through my loop (cursor) I want to restart my RowID identity property, because the next batch of valueID's should then again have a RowID starting from 1.
I tried
delete from @TempTable  DBCC CHECKIDENT(@TempTable , RESEED, 0)
but I get 'Must declare the variable @TempTable table' error.
Is there a way to destroy and recreate that @TempTable  variable?
